Recorded on April 3, 2011 using a Flip Video camera at a Living Room Concert in support of The Pearl Foundation, www.pearlfoundation.com Great evening, thanks Janis!
Nanci passed away last Friday and I am still super sad about losing this kind soul who brought light to our dark world. Janis was the first artist whose music I obsessed over. That was in the late 60’s. Still love her music so much. Discovered Nanci’s music in the late 80’s. Two supremely talented songwriters who are super novas in my heart. I am glad Nanci reached out to Janis and got to record this song on her Grammy winning recording “Other Voices, Other Rooms”. Nanci wanted songs from artists who influenced her greatly in the music business. Obviously, Janis was someone she greatly admired.
Thank you for posting this! It's wonderful! Love the story and the song. And now I know what one of Janis' Living Room Concerts is like. This lifelong Janis Ian fan thanks you!
Wow! I've listened to the Nanci Griffith version of this song hundreds of times, and I've never heard anything about the background of the song. I love this footage. This is fantastic. Thanks for the song Janis, and thanks for posting Joan.
Christopher Finkbone you know, I ran across Nanci very early in the 1980’s on Austin City limits and was mesmerized. She never received the acclaim she should have
You can Book your own Living Room concert! Ive been to one, in the UK. Great day out, in a converted Barn, with 40+ people, we prepared food & drink for Each other, & Janis plus Mr. Clarke & her guy who sells the CD's, books, etc. Lovely memories!
No - regular tuning. The song is in G but with a capo on the first fret. Although she is using a thumb pick and fingers, she is playing in a flat-picking style around G,D,C and Em. She is a very accomplished guitarist and maybe makes it sound like she is using an alternate tuning.
I've been listening to one of my favorite composers and vocalists, all evening. Janis is underappreciated, in my book!

I love this song and never knew Janis Ian co- wrote it. I almost always cry when I hear Nanci Griffin sing it on that CD.
