Hi-Fi Rush for me so far. Had an absolutely blast with that. Finally played Forbidden West as well, and really enjoyed it, but that came out last year, buy it would be my second place otherwise.
If we're talking about thing that make Games of the Year, the Invaders Must Die sequence in Hi-Fi Rush is currently my top gaming moment of the past few years.
KF should really be proud of the diverse (relatively of course) voices they bring together in gaming. Not many others are doing it and I love to see and hear it!
My GOTY so far is Octopath Traveler II. The improvements over the first game are many and it stands among the best JRPGs I've ever played. Also shout out to Terra Nil!

And Hogwarts definitely has open world bloat. But I'm too big of a Harry Potter nerd to not love every second of the game lol. If I didn't care as much about the franchise, it's a pretty average game.

So glad that we took some time this episode to give Octopath Traveler 2 its flowers. It is SO GOOD and naturally I know it will be understated by the end of the year. A true gem though for JRPG lovers.

Tim has been really funny lately. He's cracking jokes and being silly more and more (not just excited positive hype man). It's so good to see because as an entertainer he has always had the analysis stuff down. But now add jokes to the mix? So cool.

I highly disagree on Call of the Mountain everything but the graphics is mediocre it's a solid 6/10. Thumper, The Light Brigade, Pistol Whip, Synth Riders, and Tentacular are much better games/experiences

I had never actually played the Last of Us. So I bought the remake and I can say, that game is fucking good. People talk about the gameplay being meh, but I find it really engaging. The Last of Us part 1 is such a great game that I was immediately hooked. It looks amazing, it feels great to play. Wonderful remake. Also, RE4 remake was my first time playing that game and it's easily game of the year so far.
My goty's are yet to come this year. Atm I'm looking at Zelda, ff16, silk song, street fighter 6, gran blu fantasy relink, Stellar blade, But I have really liked metroid prime remastered, re4 remake, fire emblem engage and dead space remake
Hi Fi RUSH. It's not close. Best character action game aside from Bayonetta, with just as much style and a tighter story. Plus it shadow dropped on Gamepass. No years of hype to live up to really helped it make a splash. Prime Remastered isn't different enough to be considered for a 2023 list. RE4 Remake seems great but spooky games aren't for me. And while it *is* different enough that it should be considered for 2023 GOTY, it's still based on an existing game.

In my opinion, remakes/remasters shouldn't count for GOTY discussions - they got a second chance many others, particularly smaller indies (with high critical acclaim), don't get to improve and fix themselves. It heavily favors large studios with the resources to do so, and doesn't create a level playing field.
Haven’t tried Hi-Fi Rush yet, and I’m currently 10 hours into Octopath Traveler 2 so I can’t confirm if that will be on the list yet. Current list is: RE4, Hogwarts Legacy, and Dredge. And I really can’t tell you what I’d choose to be the top of them because they all make the list for completely different reasons.
I only have two games that will definitely make my GOTY list for this year so far and those are Re4 n Have a nice death. Everything else hasn't been to my taste/haven't enjoyed that much

This Q1 has mad me realize I don’t care for survival horror games. With all the praise I bought dead space and RE4 and…. I couldn’t get into either of them. Similar to Elden Ring last year one of those few games I really want to like but don’t. At least I have tears of the kingdom and Spider-Man 2 to look forward to.
Theatrhythm Final Bar Line is easily mine thus far. I've put 90 hours into it and will be putting plenty more whenever new songs are available, which if the schedule sticks will be up to October/November this year.

As someone who got back into Destiny with The Witch Queen last year, I really enjoyed the Lightfall expansion as a whole and what it brought to the Destiny platform. Like many others I was let down by the campaign, but once I finished that, it has been some of the most fun I've ever had with Destiny. The loadouts are great to switch between on the fly, Strand is a great subclass addition, and the changes to strikes in PvE were great! Definitely my GOTY so far if I had to pick one.
We're about to have a bunch of games that are likely to change this list drastically. It's not a bad idea for get thoughts in order now, and then again in Late August/Early September before Starfield and Spider-Man
They can do it at the halfway point and again three fourths of the way in. I see plenty of podcasts do it including IGN's Game Scoop. I know it's easy content but I enjoy it considering how many excellent games come out in a year. I want to hear as much about these games as I can, especially the ones I won't play for myself, so I can stay informed. Plus, a five person panel like this is really awesome, in my opinion.
My GOTY so far is Resident Evil 4. Hi Fi Rush was good but it’s not the best character action game I’ve ever played. While RE4 Remake is now my favorite Resident Evil game. Just an incredible game. The only games I can see that could top it this year are Spiderman, FF16 which is the game I’m most excited for this year, and Zelda TotK despite its poor marketing and how little they’ve shown. Gonna be a great year for good games
There is no GOTY to this point. Don’t feel comfortable giving a GOTY to a remake. So RE4 is the only one I would consider at that level, but remake so 🤷🏻♀️

They didn’t mention it because they didn’t play it. However even if they did doubt it’d be in the mix. Take away the IP and it’s a generic open world game full of the traditional problems: bloat, meaningless quests, a generic story, and a metric ton of loot which overburdens you every 5 seconds.

My GOTY so far is Resident Evil 4. Hi Fi Rush was good but it’s not the best character action game I’ve ever played. While RE4 Remake is now my favorite Resident Evil game. Just an incredible game. The only games I can see that could top it this year are Spiderman, FF16 which is the game I’m most excited for this year, and Zelda TotK despite its poor marketing and how little they’ve shown. Gonna be a great year for good games

There is no GOTY to this point. Don’t feel comfortable giving a GOTY to a remake. So RE4 is the only one I would consider at that level, but remake so 🤷🏻♀️

Knowing the gaming tastes of these five and having finished Hogwarts Legacy myself, I'm shocked it doesn't even get a mention in this discussion at all. 🤷♂️ 😅
Honestly not surprising at all. Still disappointing
They didn’t mention it because they didn’t play it. However even if they did doubt it’d be in the mix. Take away the IP and it’s a generic open world game full of the traditional problems: bloat, meaningless quests, a generic story, and a metric ton of loot which overburdens you every 5 seconds.
