This game has some really nice stylings, I like the kinda drab yet ornamentic look and the cover art is gorgeous. I think it just needs a proper ROM patch to straight out some kinks
It's a Roger Dean cover for sure. He did some art for a couple of other Japanese game companies in the early 80s as well, like a poster for the arcade version of Dragon Buster.
The first version of the game was developed originally by an American living in Japan, and his wife translated the game into Japanese.
so one of the first JRPGs was made by an american? What an interesting piece of trivia

A bit like with their Tetris game. The control scheme for that one was somewhat bizarre, too.
I remember when I first watched this episode, I didn't realize they were playing in English because the font is neigh unreadable for me
Phantasy star walked so this game could crawl miserably 🤣
Well, the original version of this game inspired Dragon Quest, which in turn inspired Phantasy Star, so you actually kind of have that backwards.
Always found this game to be cool but hard to play
That's a really good summary of Super Black Onyx.
If you ever do a video on Famicom box art, then this one should definitely be on the list.
I'd heard of this one in the scope of RPGs and JRPGs on computers, though I've never played it. doesn't seem like its aged terribly well, though.
Given it's age and how rudimentary RPGs were back then, that shouldn't come as a surprise.
@@sjake8308 yeah that's fair I know it was one of the early ones!
I got to say this one LOOKS very appealing. I’ll have to try it for myself but I’m sure I’ll get frustrated too.
The box art and cover is an homage to the prog rock band YES I assume

@@RndStranger He also did some art for Psygnosis on his home turf and inspired Space Harrier, leaving a legacy with games as well as music
