Lode Runner allows saving level data to tape by pressing SELECT during Edit Mode, but will only provide that option if it detects the Family BASIC Keyboard.

Seems like this is The First FC game to allow for player controlled scrolling. I had a cracked version of the Apple II original and it came with 150 levels. This one has only 50 levels, but that's still A LOT of game for an NROM. The FC is starting to move away from just score based single screen arcade ports.

sort of late to comment about this but a while back I edited the release date for Nuts & Milk on tcrf the moment I heard you mention that discrepancy regarding the release date in this video
someone had to do it I guess, lol

This game hurt my brain, and then they made a harder version down the line.

Two harder versions! The other one I was unaware of when I recorded. They released that version on cassette tape. Yes, it's an official Famicom release.
It's so weird, I'm probably going to do a bonus episode on it.

@@RndStranger They released casette games on famicom ? I THINK I remember you saying something about this but I could be wrong.

@@WeirdWonderful That's right. Some of the cassettes required the use of a Family Basic cartridge (Family Basic 3.0 and the cassette there will be the bonus video for Christmas), but there was also a Lode Runner cassette.

@@RndStranger I wonder, were the loading times anything like what people in the UK are familiar with with the Spectrum or Amstrad ?

I think my first taste of this series was the mac version? fun puzzle platformer! I did pick up hyper lode runner on game boy and mostly seems to be the same? at least it retains the level editor. love this series!

The scrolling is all downside on Famicom/NES. It's not a benefit, and it is certainly only done because of the size of the Sprites.
The levels on the Famicom/NES were the same size in blocks. The Famicom forced you to scroll to multiple screens what you normally saw in one. It's a huge drawback when you have played the others.
From my memory playing the NES, all the levels I played were the same. But that's over 30 years ago.
The most important issue for this Famicom is that the level editor is not the same as home computer. You can only make half size levels since "One Screen" on a computer is "Two Screens" on the Nes. The level editor was a huge part of Lode Runner at home, where saving on a floppy was easy on every system.

I used to dislike this version a lot. But having played through it recently, and completing all 50 levels without the level select, it is probably THE lode runner to start out on. The levels only ever have 3 enemies at the most, while the original could have up to 5. The screen scrolling may add a bit of difficulty, but it is actually quite fun to play around as it rewards knowing how the guards move.

I remember this game, it was very handy and I could never get past the first level, so when I lost much better I changed the game because if I didn't I would stay all day with the same game at the same level 🥲😅
