- Why Lords of the Fallen 2023 Was a Huge Flop
Lords of the Fallen 2023 is a game that was deemed to be a "Dark Souls 4.5" by the creative director and it hasn't done very well having mixed reviews and a small player base still complaining about performance issues despite being on sale with a 50% discount and recently releasing a major update taking the game to version 1.5 that was supposed to fix those issues.
The game isn't awful by any means and it sold over a million copies within 10 days but considering it's been on sale 5 times in 7 months for as big as a 50% discount and the fact it lost over 50% of its Steam players only 10 days after launch I consider Lords of the Fallen 2023 to be a huge flop. Let me know your thoughts about the game in the comments :D
Thank you to the devs, the publishers and Lurkit for the key to play :D

Not for me I had a great time with the game
A big reason for Lords of the Fallen 2023's performance issues are the fact it was ported from UE4 to a fairly early version of UE5, before more recent versions of it received updates from Epic Games to make it run a lot better on less powerful hardware, and this is compounded by the fact the current generation of graphics cards are lacking in power for what they should be.
I think Lords of the Fallen 2023 is actually a really good game, not near-perfect like Elden Ring is, but I think it's a very respectable accomplishment for a first attempt at the genre by Hexworks.
Bro, I still can't believe I bought Starfield and Lords of the Fallen back to back. I want my time and money back so badly. 😂😭
Thank God I dodged starfield... but i did get had by LOTF.
Having not watched the video yet, there was just something missing in every system of the game
I bought suicide squad and skull and bones.. haven't really given either a shot..yet lol.. you're not alone
The problem with Bethesda is they are lazy, and they know it.
They always release their games a mess because they know modders will always (eventually!!) fix their games.
If not for modders Bethesda would not be in business.
They also need to rework their engine. Even creation engine two is well behind like likes of Unreal engine 5 and others, and that's with the recent update of creation engine.
I did the same lol 😆 but lords of the fallen was fine for me
patch 1.5 isnt that bad anymore, but still im pissed i bought it for full price when released.
Love the game. Just got it after 1.5 patch and it is excellent. Glad I waited to buy it though. Waiting for Lies of P half off now. It will some day. They all do.
If you're playing on PC, you can get Lies of P (and a ton of other games) on Game Pass for $9.99/mo
Lie of P is Excellent.
There is no need to wait for the lies of p discount. That game is absolutely perfect.
@@Free4444ever no it isn't. I very much liked that game, but it has many rough edges, just like LotF.
They blocked me on twitter for posting videos of performance on series x calling out their “we heard you” lies
Thats the problem of the most devs if you talking the truth. They ignore it and say you are a liar
I think we might be a bit careful using terms like "flop" to describe this game.
I dabble in videogame developer/publisher financial investing and CI games have just posted their best financial results ever, profits are up 400% over their previous best year, and they attribute 83% percent of this to the success this game. Essentially it's a good investment to ride the wave of the sequel.
Whilst I appreciate your use of the term flop however might be in reference to your own enjoyment of the game however.
Anecdotally, I really loved this game and will be onboard for the dlc. Everyone can have their own opinion but for me there are not enough dark souls games and we won't be getting more, so this really scratched the itch for me.
I'd give it 8.5.
Annnnnnnd bugger you've just justified your position in the video as being not about sales.. thus this silly comment is irrelevant. Ignore me hahahaha.
This pile of trash wouldn’t be an 8.5 if the score was out of 100. A literal 0/10.
delusional misinformation

Bought this game at launch, it was so buggy and nearly unplayable in co op on ps5. With a few updates and patches that performance got better but never quite was 100% fluent and still isn't when using cross play. Those issues aside, my main issue with this game never was the performance as im sadly use to that by now. The big issue for me is that strength and dexterity weapons get brushed to the side for radiance and inferno scaling weapons. I have LOADS of weapons after beating the game and literally use 3 of them for my build (str/dex), one being a crossbow. If the devs didnt focus so much on casting i would feel more inclined to finish my NG+ run.
you probably just missed the weapons that would be good for your build. I play as an inferno build and I've so far found only one weapon that's pure inferno, everything else has mixed stats/reqs.
This game seems to have had such undeserved success in even selling a million units. The only people I know who bought it all purchased it at launch before even knowing what they were getting and none of them liked it.
In fact the only reason it sold a million units is because of the truly ridiculous hype that it somehow gathered. I mean this game had just about everything to get people way too excited: Dark Fantasy, Souls like, shiny graphics. That’s like a deadly concoction of impulsive purchases and so many people got baited into buying something that within a week of release everyone knew was basically trash.
Why did you keep pressing x? Basic attacks are always mapped to R1/Rb for soulsborns.
I play a lot of different games everyday and not many souls games so it was just getting used to the button layout
When devs make a game run worse then ark survival evolved on the series x you deserve your game to flop. 7-11 fps with drops into 3-7 fps slide show should be liable for a lawsuit. Xbox allowing this game which runs so poorly on the series x should be sued also
And marketing it as “optimized” for series x should be illegal.
I got this as a Christmas present last year 2023 & have yet to play it! My gaming list is huge & I kind of forgot about it! I will try it out because I love Elden Ring!
I hope you enjoy it when you play it 👍
I really liked it mate. I played it after all the patches and it ran quite well. Hope you enjoy.
Playing Elden Ring its Not perfect but like it So far. It's missing deep Customization it's missing swimming mechanics and it's climbing on boss and Regular tall enemies mechanic.. And I know about the repeated bosses which I am starting to see it but other than that the environment great the type of builds you can make great because i'm making a three in one build.. A shield build, A bow, and finally a Magic build. It's good so far. I give it a seven out of ten so far.
I just started it a few days ago and I’m having a blast. The level design structure/layout work done is really top notch
@@paulsmith5684yeah lords of the fallen is about a 7. Elden ring probably 9/10
My biggest issue with this game was its 'game feel' to it - especially its combat, movement, and animations in general. It's one helluva looker (seriously, the game looks STUNNING!), I love the world and how truly big & interconnected it is, I dig the drip (which is really nice ngl), but oh man, the floaty af combat puts me off of it so much. People say shti about OG LoTF combat, and some of it IS true, but the combat there FELT SO GOOD, it felt weighty & impactful despite the slow pace, and all the jank. Here the combat is slidy, lacking any sense of impact and/or momentum, and to me it's a total disaster if the combat just doesn't FEEL right in a combat-centered game like any Soulslike game truly is at its core. And the movement, especially the running animation... I can't even tell you how much I hate it, it doesn't just look silly, it looks god-awful & disgraceful. As a slow-walky person myself I enjoyed every step I took in Dark Souls 3, or Bloodborne, or The Surge (Deck13 btw) - I could really feel the walking, feel the steps, and the sounds were just right, the animations were really good, everything there worked in tandem to immerse me into the games.
Here, in LoTF23 it's as floaty & weightless as the combat that I described above, the game just won't let me FEEL it right, and in turn I don't really feel like playing it.
And that's a real shame, I've been drooling over this game since its very announce, I was overhyped expecting it to be my next big thing. But then I played it (and re-played it in 4 months after the release), and felt these conflicting emotions of seeing all the gorgeous surroundings while struggling to immerse & ground myself enough by the very core things the game might offer - the movement, and the combat. And it's just heartbreaking, really. Everything around me looks so good there, yet the very foundation of the game (and its gameplay loop) feels so wrong. 'Tis a shame.
This game got the short end of the stick in a culture of internet hyperbole, unfortunately. It's a legitimately unique take on the Souls-Like formula. And as someone who is heavily invested in this genre, and has been since the original Demon's Souls PS3 release - This game is actually surprisingly great, even if rough around the edges.
But in today's world if your initial launch is rough then it's gonna be rough to come back from it. Doubly so in a genre such as this, where it's unforgiving to new players and generally too difficult and inaccessible to the mainstream. (It's still a miracle to me that Elden Ring broke the mainstream, it deserves it, but I'm still surprised this happened as a long-time veteran of the genre.) This game was never going to do well if it didn't take off initially. And it didn't.
Unfortunate because outside of the rough edges, there a lot to really enjoy here if you're into the genre. Some unique ideas that were well implemented. For genre fans, if they're willing to give it a fair shake there's a decent chance they'll find something to enjoy here. That said, it has a LOT of complexities that even the FromSoft Souls games don't have. And that in itself is going to even further turn off a more casual player.
Is it a Dark Souls 4.5? Sort of. The atmosphere is there, the ambition is there. The base bones of the game are there. But it was honestly NEVER going to live up to that expectation. That said, I think that you're SEVERELY downplaying the gameplay modifiers that were added. If you're into this game, some of those are REALLY cool. And they serve to significantly expand replayability. They're there less so to make the game easier, but more so for the opposite effect. And the Umbral system's complexities do indeed set it aside from it's peers. And the layers to it are pretty deep. This is a system that I'd love to see again in other games too. I think it's when you begin to understand the Umbral side of the game that if you're going to like this game, that's where it's going to click.
In all honesty most of the other complaints you listed gameplay wise are kind of all common elements of this entire genre.
No it got hate because for 70 dollars it ran at 7-11fps on series x
Yeah I picked it up for the first time a few days ago and I’m having a blast. I know what the popular criticisms are but just sitting there playing the game almost all of them just seem so exaggerated
@@coltj5907 They most often are. The game did have some bad performance issues at launch, but they didn't take too long to get ironed out either.
Yea worst things in elden ring, Lockon system from dark souls 1 aka 1990s lockon system. Then the Horrible dark souls 1 controls with no other option. IF they had Put as much attention into these to areas and done something better, elden ring could be a 10/10 no brainer. For me i can't play it.
All these Souls Like start to blend together.
Even when they have different aesthetics such as one setting being high fantasy, another ancient Japan, another in a future robot factory.
How many slow swinging enemies do you want to fight before it gets boring? The formula is basically long drawn out animations and attacks that take huge chunks of health.
I liked it at first but now I can't even get to pieta or the boss after her
I enjoyed lords of the fallen.
it sold over a million copies. most games can only dream of doing this well.
It's not just a you problem, I did not like it as well. The attacks in this game lunges you forwards so much that most of my deaths were due to trying to attack enemies but ended up lunging myself off ledges instead. This issue was brought was up way before the game was launch to the dev yet nothing happened and still nothing has happened.
you're wrong. it's impossible to move yourself off a ledge by attacking.
This game was fire to me even if it was as a commercial success.
Lords of the Fallen 2023 is one of the very best souls games ever made, and it’s only second to Elden Ring while being much better than the dark souls series, and it’s even better now with the most recent update which makes it the most complete non Elden Ring souls experience you can get as the game is an easy 9.7/10 !!!!!!!!!
so far i'm enjoying the game but imo lotf isn't equal but a bit lower than dark souls because of enemy variation and max number of player in a multiplayer session, and overall area quality in term of area uniquness and atmosphere.
I'm pausing the video right now to say this.... I can tell you why the game was a huge flop. If it was just one world, it would've probably been way better. Instead, they tried to do something different so everyone wouldn't think they were copying Elden Ring. Because of this element of the game, I didn't buy it even though I wanted to play it initially.
it’s one thing to set a ambition but it’s another to clearly take that and hype it up when most things now if they get hyped they die.
I hated the game when i initially played it but now I love it because of its interconnected beautiful world and exploration BUT the game is a painful, aggravating mess which I couldn't in all my heart recommend to anyone. I just find the fighting painfully messy and the enemy placement and levelling is atrocious. My "nothing but strength" build still takes multiple hits towards the end game and I am still seeing the same enemies from that start kicking my arse at the end. And they are obsessed with dogs.
Just started the game and it is a bit complicated, jumping is a pain . and for me it's a big learning curve, but it is running quite good and I will be enjoying it once I become more familiarised with the controls. Shaping up to be enjoyable .
I remember playing LOTF #1 way back when! It wasn't bad!
Cheers 🍻

After a few days of playing No Rest For The Wicked, I find myself going back to Elden Ring.
I imagine, that would happen with game as well. DLC for ED, is about to drop soon as well, so I think most are just holding on to their cash for that.
I started No Rest for the Wicked too. I really enjoy it tho... that said, I pre-ordered Elden Ring DLC, and when it comes out, it will over-shadow everything else. I am enjoying No rest for the Wicked tho :) - great dev team - making it awesome!
One game put me to sleep the other one had potential storywise but they were flaws. At least one of them can give a good night sleep While the other one.
Makes you shake your head And say what the developers were thinking at this point.
I played the 2014 LOTF, finished it on normal, NG+, and NG++, and enjoyed it.
Tentative about the 2023 variant so didn't bother with it.
The combat is fun, the world layout seems cool but everything else failed to pull me in and apparently the performance is still quite poor across all platforms. They’ll probably have it in a better state within the next 6 months or so because they’re working hard to fix the problems 👍
@@Born2Game id pay full price every time if the games were worthy of that, but they very rarely are and sadly take a long time to fix.
This game released before Lies Of P so that didn't made them any favors.
I started this game, couldn't get out of the starting area. Never went back to it. Getting so sick of the industry's obsession with the Soulslike genre.
I bought this on release and really wanted to get into it but just couldn’t which was a shame because I think there’s a good game in there😊
I was really disappointed with it. The combat was one of the biggest let downs, felt kinda soggy. Slicing enemies with a sword felt more like hitting them with a baseball bat.
The umbral world was also cack. Traversing between the two worlds was always an obvious necessity and felt like a mode change rather than something to figure out for yourself or an optional path.
I thought the bosses would be fun, but they're just a repetitive memory game.
IS this not all souls-like games?
@@douglasduda9826 no, far from it. Lies of P was in a different league compared.
@@sheriffjbunnell2392 Part of what iI am referring to is Being Forced to use a 90s lock-on system. This TETHERS you to that 1 enemy and we have seen over and over again if ur fighting more than 1 enemy how great an idea that is. Especially in Elden Ring. There is a better way... same with having to use the lockon for ranged or magic...its called a crosshair or heck a DOT when you hold a trigger, oh wait those are for swinging your...wtf?
@douglasduda9826 ok, well, that's not really what I was talking about but I get what you're saying. Dragon's Dogma has gone for a non lock-on style but that's another that's missing that sharpness with weapons. It works well with spells and sorcery though.
@@sheriffjbunnell2392 DD1 has a lockon, but ur NOT forced to use it for the game to even work Besides the magic. Is it perfect, NO, but id take dd1 combat style vs Anything souls like, Just my opinion. Anyways, if you enjoy it play it, if not Don't.
I was so disappointed in this piece of shit. A lot of reasons why but a big one for me was the enemy spam... Like dogs fucking everywhere and even in boss fights
I pre-ordered the game thinking it was demonsouls and darksouls 3 combined due to advertising, all I got was budget, wish version of ds2 and had to wait over a month to be able to access the items outside the game
0:43 why would an old playerbase come back to a single player game?
Concurrent players too, what in the world
Because not only is there a sale so there should be new players but a major update should bring players back even to a single player game
@@Born2Game sales are on constantly, i got it half price a month ago, interested souls fans have already bought it.
What, the update is gameplay modfiers you would have to play the entire game again for, at approx 30 to 40 hours length.
The vast majority of people who complete the game move on, even when enioying it.
Such an odd take, the company itself announced it was a successful launch with approx 1.3m units sold recently and a long tail to go....
Im kinda burnt out on souls likes myself..i know im in the minority but i was a bit let down initially by stellar blade because it felt kinda souls.. really its just the taking turns rhythm combat..im going to keep trying tho because the combat is very deep..i enjoyed the video as usual..good stuff
Minority or not you’re still entitled to feel a bit burnt out. I’m glad you’re enjoying Stellar Blade enough to keep trying and thank you, I’m glad you enjoyed the video 👍
Is it the final update for lord of the fallen?
I don’t think it is
@@Born2Game thanks for replying I think the game is not as good still need more updates to push
@@dijik123 You’re welcome and hopefully they put out more updates to fix the remaining problems 👍
@@Born2Game hope so
Game is really underrated with 1.5 is a blast. As a veteran souls player since demon's souls back in 2009 i have to say game is good. People just want to compare and complain all the time. Just buy it and play it and you will see that its really good.
It's a 7 at best
It's a 7 at best
It wasnt a bad game just had some really bad design choices. The devs clearly didnt play their own game or beta test it with how wonky the “umbral bonfires” are placed. No one who wouldve played it would say yes these are placed perfectly, nothing about these will annoy players. Also i know they fixed the enemy density but again, no one beta tested it thoroughly
Going to try it still.
I hope you enjoy it 👍
Lords of The Fallen isn't a terrible game its just a very mid souls like and the devs that made this and the original Lords of the Fallen back when they were in Deck 13 I think the team was called never really understood the souls formula but the people who stayed at Deck 13 did as The Surge 1&2 were pretty solid for what they achieved and are underrated souls likes imo, plus the time this game came out wasn't a good time for it when Lies of P was around the corner
It’s better than all souls games aside from Elden Ring, and demon souls remake
@@HaloinfiniteEternal lmao sure it is
Game was awful....I tried playing it but had to stop...the world design was confusing and awful...all the different areas looked the same and the umbral realm was such a slog to get through...you never had a chance to properly explore because of the enemies hording you constantly. Coming off Lies of P I was hoping this would be the better game but boy was I wrong.
same experience i was comin from lies of p and the sensation of sadness and failure of this product is just astonishing
I think it's a cool game it's not perfect but it's far from starfield or redfall.
Also a big props to the devs for constantly sticking to the game and working on it. Instead of abandoning it.
I wouldn’t say flop the game is still pretty amazing
delusional or no experience in game
@@theosalvagni4086 i beated the game twice and l pretty much enjoyed it those two times on currently trying to platinum it
Very underrated game tbh.
nah this is the worst soulslike ever, even crabsouls is superior
it wasnt a flop haha. it sold exeptionally well.
A flop doesn’t mean in terms of sales as mentioned in the video, it sold quite well at first
Lies of P, Wo Long, and Remnants 2 had their unique spin on the Souls genre, but this game felt like a poor man Elden Ring.
It flopped twice and i didn't even know this came out. I never once seen anyone reviewing the game so i hope its fun

now sitting at 500 lol
Umbral world was too much. It wasn’t needed. They could have had the umbral as a mode for a dungeon but it’s too late.
I love this game
Are you seriously judging a predominantly single-player game by concurrent players numbers?
Have they added the option to turn off enemy health bars yet?
I loved it, but the jump mechanic was horrible.
LOTF is by far the most disappointing game I’ve ever purchased. It’s bad enough that the game sucks, but then it barely even runs anyway. Trash in every way.
The game was never a flop
agreed. a lot of people love it. it also sold really well.
It recouped a fraction of the 66m budget, so definitely a flop.
@@Captain.AmericaV1 false. It sold over 1.2 million copies.
When a game runs at a constant 7-11 fps slideshow it’s most definitely a flop and to this day on the series x it runs the same with no fix
@@MrBeefTot187 it runs perfectly on pc. Even got it running on deck with a steady 30 to 40 fps

They made their development, production, and advertising back in 10 days. Residuals make the game profitable. That's not bad considering the market for the past 5 years.
They would have done but there would have been a lot of refunds due to the performance issues
@@Born2Game I agree they would have made more. 1.2 million units sold after adjustment isn't bad (November 2023 sales numbers). I'm guessing what they are making post launch with sales, bargains, and whatnot are pure profit. Considering just the base game was $70 (U.S.D.) for the basic version, the minimum collected was 84 million. There's no telling how many people bought the more expensive (and completely bullshit) package, lol. 84 million isn't bad, but with proper management, development, and marketing of this game, I do believe it could have hit the 200 million mark. Great video, btw!
The first game had horrible controls and it immediately put me off from playing the game. Saw this come out and I was like....nahhhh, probably has same controls...thank god I never bought it.
its not that deep. Lords of the fallen is actually one of the best soulslikes out there. A lot of people are such nitpicks. Its a beautiful, well crafted games. It has flaws, but thats what soulslikes are for imo.
Personally I don't think it was a flop at all, just bc it was a different kind of soulslike doesn't mean it's bad, yes there's things I don't like about it but every soulslike can't be perfect like elden ring, I'll definitely be buying the sequel when it drops in 2 years
