I Y2K tested a Magstar tape robot with an IBM 0S/2 control terminal for a large Dutch bank also active in Germany. One problem. The bank wasn't large enough. Or better, its entrance gate to its server room wasn't large enough. The tape robot didn't fit through (how we build the open gated Westerschelde dam, no idea) , causing delays and the use of pneumatic hammers to create a bigger entrance. Now that is wat I call a Y2K problem.

Your video has shown that this synth still belongs on my "someday" list. _Most_ of the sounds you got out of this thing - I enjoyed, which is exactly what i was hoping for. Great job on this post! I still have this box... At the time, it was a cheap way to get my hands on Factory PCM 909 + various Drum tones I could pitch and record through outboard, along with very usable engine featuring SH and TB tones, with 2 OSC's in a very compact, knob laden unit. In a world and time of single OSC Juno's, $pendy, yet sparse interface JV Romplers, the flashy, yet underwhelming JP.. this unit delivered a generous serving of those Roland flavors you were looking for , even if it came with a few things you weren't.. To this day.. it still outshines for that detuned osc thing the classic Juno's can't do.. close as you can get to real 909 PCM tones.. with the midi control a vintage SH simply lacks.. Keeper
@@Maschinestorm It's lovely machine in it's own right, It's great at being repurposed for ambience and FX. I used it in this piece. It's all SH -32, beside the violin. ruclips.net/video/eO-JyWKtQeA/видео.htmlsi=snfNlDz4rMMmD49-
Easy fix for wobbly Roland 90's knobs (even new ones soldered in fresh wobble), take some 3/8" car fuel line hose, measure the depth of the hole around the pole for the knob, cut hose to length for depth to the surface of the face of the unit, take the hose and slip it down into the hole around the pot and put the knob back in, the knob will be incredible solid from there out because the hose only fits around the outer threaded diameter and not the pot pole itself, I did this to my Roland MC-505 and JX-305 years ago and have had zero issues with knob wobble since.
I had one of them briefly. They weren't very popular and stores sold them really cheap toward the end. IIRC until Roland fixed it in a firmware update, the filter was "steppy." I had fun messing around with the thing but its deeper features were mysterious, at least to me. I got rid of it once the used prices started to appreciate.
Almost bought one. Went back to the shop to mess around on it several times. They probably would have take the Gaia as trade. Didn't pull the trigger in time. This happened another time with a machinedrum.
yes sir, but you can in essence do everything hardware does, in software. But thats not why people buy hardware. Its also not about features, because in software there are so much more features. You can connect everything with everything in DAWs. I personally do not find softsynths that inspiring, they sound really good these days, but i mis the tactile factor, in having a real machine, with a dedicated form factor, inside and outside. Its not about having the most features, but what inspires you the most.
On a tangential note, despite your dire warnings I purchased the sh4d a good month ago - $399 on Amazon is quite attractive considering its layered sound range. But I use it as a multimbral sound box for my polyend tracker which is of course a great sequencer at heart, hence several tracks using midi combined with some samples on the tracker itself. If you still have access to an sh4d, this combination is worth trying. I find it a compact yet pretty powerful and great sounding, and dare I say it, FUN setup.
i also wanted to have one back in the days. as purely a synth, its an interesting instrument. the arps from roland in the 90s on their grooveboxes were really capable, with a lot of options. if you use it as a sort of 4 part synth, you could get a 8 osc layered patch. I like the sound also, but i still do not understand the synth technique, because in specs it ranks as a rompler, but its more, it can do things which the old romplers from roland couldnt do soundwise. Its indeed hard to find, the drums are a uuuuuh bonus? But as a synth, you can make nice patches with it. I must also say that i like this one.
@@AudioPilz but i havent seen romplers do osc sync pwm, and least not in roland romplers. And the filter also sounds nice, could there be some VA elements in it?
Nice! I love mine, though it’s pretty beat from the past decade of shows. That pitch env is capable of wall shaking sub bass that is insane. Also the chord memory is handy for stabs etc. never really used the drums too much. I paid about $150 for mine from a pawn shop, and there are some places in the resonance that I don’t venture to much, but other then that-Pretty great little unit. 😎

Well, that 200 quid profit is probably going to fix the very quiet stereo outs and recapping so some sort of cosmic karma there I guess. Still, the only synth I've ever sold and cared enough to acquire again so pleased to have one a second time. I don't care it's not analogue, the hypersaw is still unmatched.
I actually used this for a live jam meetup show in university and I hate it simply because of how very awful that panel is for accessing controls. We’ve come a long way for synth UIs. See also: the DX7. Doesn’t matter how good the oscillators or filters are if I can’t find my way around it.
Boutique Manual Viewer BMV-1 🤣 Beautifull! To be fair, everytime I use the MC-101 I have to consult the "flight Manual" (that's how I call it) because operating it is as complex a flying a jumbojet on manual controls.
Never realized the Cascadia kind of reminds of this.. I was thinking it was more inspired by Complex-1 from Reason since he did some of the presets for that.
3 punch combo with the recent Roland episodes 😂 love it!! (i am also a roland fanboy) keep up these quality episodes, always a highlight of my Friday!!! 😎👉👉
I know all about Roland and failing knobs and buttons. My new bought JV-1000 (which I still own) was not suited for professional use, or, to be more precise, it was not meant for use at all. Especially the frequently used sequencer-buttons failed soon and time after time. In the end Roland Benelux was so fed up with my complaints and warranty claims, that they sent me a whole bag of replacement buttons-caps. The buttons-caps are made from hard brittle plastic, sitting together on a plastic frame, just like with model kits, which also acts as a spring for the cpas to return to their initial position. The failure is caused by the fact that there is - albeit a tiny bit - too much space between the plastic button-caps and the push-buttons on the circuit board. This allows too much travel for the caps, which eventually makes them come apart from the “model kit” frame. Combine that with the fact that operating a sequencer takes a lot of (note) data entering and back and forthing and you have a recipe for failure. According to Roland there was nothing wrong with the construction of their synth and the defects were caused by me using the JV-1000 wrong; I would be pushing the buttons too firmly, that is literally what they said. I guess that makes Roland Benelux kind of Steve Jobs avant la lettre. After having disassembled the JV-1000 for the umpteenth time, I decided to modify the chassis - i.e. making the holes bigger - and replace the crappy toy-buttons with Digitast push-buttons, which are still lasting after more than 30 years. To be fair, in 2014, when the synth was already 21 years old, Roland replaced the red glue leaking keybed completely free of charge.
No mention of the filter zipper? That's surprising considering how much realtime tweaking you did. I still love this thing, though. If I weren't so into modular, I'd buy one again in a heartbeat.
I had one of these, but got rid of it before I really had time to dig into it (had other needs, got a good price for it). If I recall, there was an effects module, or maybe just a filter in the same form factor around the same time. Always wanted to play with one of those, but never did.

The SH-32 was my first 'Virtual Analogue' synth. I kinda remember liking the arpeggiator and its overall aggressive tone. On the other hand, trying to make sense of the thing (particularly the owner's manual) nearly gave me a brain aneurysm.
@@AudioPilz This is actually quite reassuring. At the time, I distinctly remember questioning my own intelligence because the thing was driving me bleedin' barmy, lol.
@@djidmusic7730 Yep, I'd forgotten about that awful steppy filter. Back then I was kinda naive. I didnt realise that a huge company like Roland were capable of purposefully releasing a product that was actually a bit shit! 😂
FFS. You have now featured every synth I own on this channel and I only own 6😂 I didn't expect the SH32 to make an appearance as they're relatively obscure compared to the others I own. I have to that the SH32 is the best value piece of gear I own[because I was given it for free]
This instrument is not ticking any of my boxes, but I must admit that the filter sounds very Roland - warm and well rounded. So that's a good thing at least.

Have you tried using it as a midi controller?
@ I have not, no. I used it once years ago and that was it. Used it with a BSP.
Boutique Manual Viewer BMV-1 🤣 Beautifull! To be fair, everytime I use the MC-101 I have to consult the "flight Manual" (that's how I call it) because operating it is as complex a flying a jumbojet on manual controls.
Definitely needs a flight manual;)
Great video, this is def a hard synth to find out there!!
It's basically inside the MC-909 too, the sound is shockingly good
Never realized the Cascadia kind of reminds of this.. I was thinking it was more inspired by Complex-1 from Reason since he did some of the presets for that.
Klasse Sound :-) Wie immer ! Best.
Vielen herzlichen Dank!!!
That second jam was buttery smooth
3 punch combo with the recent Roland episodes 😂 love it!! (i am also a roland fanboy) keep up these quality episodes, always a highlight of my Friday!!! 😎👉👉
😃 Have a great weekend!!!
Roland: the grandfather of modern music. The rest is the rest
❤️❤️❤️Roland❤️❤️❤️
Sounds like a winner to me. Like a SIDstation without the ridiculous pricetag, well probably not, I've seen TR808's for €6500 recently.
SIDstation has become unobtainium
It's funny but I hardly ever seem to get into territory where it actually bothers me regardless of the synth
It's Friday again, what's better than a prime slice of Bad Gear :D
I had one of these, but got rid of it before I really had time to dig into it (had other needs, got a good price for it). If I recall, there was an effects module, or maybe just a filter in the same form factor around the same time. Always wanted to play with one of those, but never did.
EF-303 - there's a Bad Gear episode about it;)
@@AudioPilz that's the fellow! looks like you reviewed right before I discovered your channel! Time to dig through the archives and see what else I missed.
Definitely want to see if I can snag one of those at a good price used, that seems pretty fun!
The SH-32 was my first 'Virtual Analogue' synth. I kinda remember liking the arpeggiator and its overall aggressive tone. On the other hand, trying to make sense of the thing (particularly the owner's manual) nearly gave me a brain aneurysm.
I tame synths for a living and I had the exact same experience
Yup, I had the exact same experience. First synth and tantalizing on one level but deeply frustrating:)! The steppy filter drove me nuts, too!
@@AudioPilzYour patience here is impressive! Great show as ever!
FFS. You have now featured every synth I own on this channel and I only own 6😂
I didn't expect the SH32 to make an appearance as they're relatively obscure compared to the others I own.
I have to that the SH32 is the best value piece of gear I own[because I was given it for free]
Took me YEARS to find one!
Still missing a Technics WSA 1 R 😢.
Free?? You was ripped off! Take it back & ask if you can swap it for an RS7000 🎛😁
Would you buy one?
For let´s say 300 euro?
@@roelvanbael7885 I did for 300 10 years ago! 👍
This instrument is not ticking any of my boxes, but I must admit that the filter sounds very Roland - warm and well rounded. So that's a good thing at least.
While looking at it, I wonder if I would have recognized that the buttons could be used to play notes and chords back in the day without RUclips lol 🤣🤣🤣
Took me a while too;)
And like that, Florian receives a copyright strike from the year 2000.
The strike has been lifted btw;)
@@AudioPilz Glad to hear it. Seems they only injured their own reputation.
Hopefully you got some new subscribers from the whole thing.
Sounds good for acid/dnb mixes
Absolutely!
We stand in solidarity with audio pilz ✊
It’s ticking all the boxes, I’ve also wanted one for eons as well as the MC-09. Some flaws can be forgiven...
MC-09 is even weirder than this one
I don't know what's going on, but this is the most hilarious episode I've watched in a while! I almost want the SH-32 if it wasn't for the harsh truths.
