There's actually another way. He can only dodge 7 times, on the 8th he'll always be hittable. So you just have to punch him 7 times, and shoot him once with a gun to do the most damage. Granted, this method is very slow and takes a while to do. This methods works the best with the FAMAS's tracer bullets combined with the infinite ammo bandana, so you can see the bullet path and focus fire on mantis instead of randomly sweeping the room

FOR THOSE PLAYING YOUR DISC ON AN EMULATOR. Your emulator should have a controllers setting. In my case PSXe is file -> configuration -> controller. Set port 1 to none and then map your controller to port 2.
My modded ps2 setup has the memory cards designated for every game individually. Also every disc of a ps1 game is saved individually. Each with their own memory slots. This makes most games with multiple discs basically unplayable or in some instances actually unplayable. Ridiculous design for some emulators.
Never knew this and I’ve played this game innumerable times over the last 20 years, thank you for this video, need it to beat him on my steam deck version 🙏🙏🙏
I've discovered another way ,much quicker, throw stun grenades at the statues, they won't break but it works the same. You don't have to wait for a prompt either.
Games back then had interesting ways of doing things back then, using ports on a game console, made you feel part of it, I wish they do these types of things today
I've known about this from a gaming mag publication back in the day but it never revealed the actual method to do it. I'm so glad I know now lmao 25 years later
This is amazing 😂 I downloaded msg yesterday for RetroArch iOS and remembered back in the day you needed to switch ports. Wasn’t gonna play it but now I can
I was playing on a PS Classic with a wireless controller myself, so the option of changing to port 2 wasn’t possible. Good this game was forward thinking and gave us an option, even if it’s a bit of a secret!
I just learned how to switch ports on the Xbox series x last night on My third play through I was in the Torture room when I figure this out press the 2 top triggers on your Xbox controller at the same time a menu will pop up and allow you to switch ports
For ps4/ps5 users, tap the PS controller button twice you go to the PS menu and back to the game, a settings menu will pop up and there you can select controller port 2, no need to die or anything
I'mma be straight up, it's cool psycho mantis has the port 2 gimmick it's been talked about to death at this point, it's one of the first things people think about when it comes to this game, but controller port 2 should've been the secret way to beat him while the statues should've been the main way. Have it so it's less 4th wall breaking too, make it like a hidden easter egg, as soon as you switch controllers to port 2 campbell can call and say "Snake, I don't know what you did, but it seems like he can't read your mind anymore", I just feel like that'd make the port 2 gimmick more enjoyable.
They aren't trying to hide the 4th wall breaks I just got to this fight and there's been at least 4 4th wall breakers especially the one when Naomi said "it's a horrific manipulation tune"when mantis was manipulating meryl
It was all about showcasing the hardware of the original PlayStation, Kojima was always fascinated on how to bridge the player to the action on screen and that’s why he put in the memory card reading cutscene as well and used the DualShock vibration to simulate his Telekinetic powers. This was a big budget title for the original PlayStation, flexing the hardware was one of the best marketing tactics out there for both the game itself and the console.
Just so everyone knows sometimes it takes a couple of deaths before Campbell will tell you about the statue and also using the tranq darts is much more effective than trying to physically harm him with ballistics or hand to hand
You mean the tranq darts that don't exist in the PS1 game because they were created for MGS2 and then added to Twin Snakes (the Gamecube exclusive version that's basically MGS1 remade using MGS2 as a base and has never been ported to another platform or re-released) years after the original game released?
If you haven't gotten the CODEC saying to break the statues, then it won't work. It requires you to see it, die, and go back (do not load a save state, it will not work otherwise)
@@braven7248see what? ive died and dint come back to the fight scene. I also called camp on the port 2 thing before i died and still nothing happened.
I was always able to beat him on og mgs1, but for some reason, on twin snakes, I can't stop him for the life of me bloody hell! And for some reason, I always run out of ammo in twin snakes on this boss, and it never freaking regenerates for me! In og, I never had this issue. I don't know what I'm doing wrong in this stupid port. I thought twins was supposed to be an improvement over the original, yet I'm struggling through it due to minor inconveniences.
It would almost be cooler if there was no failsafe and you just had to buy a working PlayStation to complete the game lol. Think about all the people downloading it in the future then realizing this.
Thank god Kojima had the foresight to realize that not everyone is gonna play this game on the original ps1/psx consoles forever.
Or if someone’s ps1 port 2 is damaged. Simply a man of the future

That's more of a developer foresight you do for anything involving a system. Not that brilliant, just good workmanship.
"Snake, is there some reason you cannot use port 2?"
Yeah, I'm playing on Xbox with duckstation...
thank god they realised that the second controller port could get damaged for whatever reason.
Yeah. I wonder if it was a secret Sony requirement to give another option to players also?
@@CrazyreynI’m sure it was just a safety net for those whose ports were probably just damaged
