Snake's Revenge (NES) Playthrough

- A playthrough of Ultra's 1990 action game for the NES, Snake's Revenge.
Snake's Revenge is one of a couple direct sequels that Konami created to the original Metal Gear game, and though it's not the "canonical" sequel - that honor goes to the MSX2 game Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake - it does fair justice to the original. It's a game that a lot of people like to sneer at, but it pulls off its combination of stealth and action well while largely adhering to the spirit of the first game.
The development of Snake's Revenge reminds me of that of StarTropics. Both were created by Japanese studios specifically for western audiences, but neither were released for the Famicom's domestic market. It's pretty interesting to see how Japanese studios perceived and catered to the tastes of the American market, and Snake's Revenge makes for a good case study. Take that first image of Snake during the intro - he's the perfect image of 80s Hollywood steroid abuse, and John is the spitting image of Stallone in Rambo III.
Anyways, Snake's Revenge follows the same general format as Metal Gear, but instead of taking place across one huge zone, the game is broken up into isolated areas connected by cutscenes. I personally liked the change - it was better focused, and figuring it all out felt less daunting than in Metal Gear. The change has little impact on the overall challenge and mainly serves to drop the pretense of non-linearity in favor of a more streamlined experience, and I had no problem with that at all.
It looks absolutely fantastic for an NES game. The characters are more realistically proportioned, and the increased level of detail makes the small sprites more readily identifiable. Just check out Snake's muscles - Schwarzenegger would've killed to have such chiseled neon yellow drumstick biceps! The character portraits look great, the backgrounds are detailed, and there are a few impressive setpieces sprinkled throughout. The melodically-driven soundtrack is one of my favorites Konami did on the NES, too. It reminds me a lot of Mission: Impossible and Rollergames, especially when it ramps up in the action-heavy bits.
The game play is pretty good, overall. The overhead parts control better than they did in Metal Gear, and you again have tons of items at your disposal that provide options in how to deal with different threats. The English makes more sense this time around so there aren't any randomly indecipherable "clues," and even though the straight-line vision of the enemy guards isn't terribly realistic, it is mercifully consistent which helps keep the challenge reasonable.
The game isn't too hard until you get to the lead-up to the end. The pit-floors, the suicide bombers, and the bosses can be trying until you've learned them over the course of countless failed attempts, but its most divisive gameplay element seems to be the side-scrolling platformer segments. Early on, they're fine. The controls are super-stiff - like a hybrid of Castlevania and Rush'n Attack - but these parts become needlessly frustrating later on and end up feeling like unnecessary padding. It's a shame because they're the only major stumbling point in what is an otherwise excellent game that does the Metal Gear name a true solid.
Like with my video of the original NES Metal Gear ( • Metal Gear (NES) Playt... ), this is a brand new playthrough to replace my original video 720p upload.
And a fun bit of trivia: during the intro, Metal Gear is assigned a code number, "VRC-4". This is a reference to the VRC-4 series of memory mapper chips that Konami used in several of their Famicom games released between 1989 and 1991, including TMNT, Tiny Toons, Gradius 2, and the Wai Wai World games. Funnily enough, neither Metal Gear game shipped with a VRC chip: MG1 used UNROM, and Snake's Revenge used the MMC-1.

No matter how big a hissy fit Kojima threw over the NES games, Snake's Revenge was an excellent console-exclusive follow-up to the classic Metal Gear.
Was this a us made game
It's now hard to believe that Konami is bringing Snake's Revenge back for the Metal Gear Solid Master Collection.
When did Kojima hate on it? If anything, Kojima spoke good of it.
Redacted
@VahanNisanian Ah, I guess I should've been clearer. I was referring to the Metal Gears on the NES in general and how they were totally excluded from the series' canon. He criticized this one a bit, but he was much more positive about it than the first.
At a young age, I remember playing Metal Gear on the NES. It was pretty difficult, but I managed to finish it. When I found out about this game, I was obsessed and managed to also beat this. I absolutely love this series. It definitely stood apart from other games.
I also love the jungle music. It's so badass.
hi
Im a huge Metal gear fan, I have all of them but peacewalker. Respect and love to an OG!
How did you felt when you realize PS1/GBA made solid snake? I was born in 98 so I only experience solid snake first time in the GameCube which is the one for the Ps1 and it was fun! Then I started playing metal gear acid and the series spin offs for the psp, I haven’t played any new ones yet like the ones that came out for the ps3/ps4
@@srJaime98 It was cool to see the series evolve beyond a more basic 8-bit game. Although future titles evolved far beyond the NES versions, they did maintain the heart of the series. It's like a cinematic, survival, and espionage game.
I was around 10 years old and my dad and I beat Metal Gear on the NES together, we had notes and everything, I think I did all the controller work, but he was helping me figure stuff out. It's something I'll always remember.
Later we got Snake's Revenge
Snake's Revenge might well be the best example in all of gaming of something that was pretty well liked by those who actually experienced it when it was new that is now universally reviled by those who mistake trivia for wisdom. Yes, we all know the story of Kojima on the bus with one of this games developers, but in it's time most of us didn't even know these games came from Japan let alone this one was a watered down version another exclusive to it. The AVGN didn't review this one, but it definitely feels like he did considering the learned opinions so many adopted on it.
I don't get it either, but the internet is one helluva echo chamber. It was better than a lot of the other action games releasing on the NES at the time.
@@NintendoCompleteSee, and I think I do get it. It's the black sheep oddball entry in a beloved series that "sucks". Not only do we get to say "fun fact: there's a lesser known terrible Metal Gear", but we also get an easy target to demonstrate that something otherwise excellent isn't perfect. Skyward Sword, Mario Sunshine, Other M... we LOVE having that one we can all agree is bad. It makes us feel better for not having created anything ourselves.
Whats the story about kojima on a bus with a game developer? I cant fond it on google
Zelda 2 also gets a lot of modern hate but I think it’s a similar example. Snakes Revenge rules!
Nah while not completely terrible it's still the worst of the series has to offer, so much flaws in game design. The Kojima story is just a cherry on top of how horrible Konami is but it's not really reflecting the game's quality, that's the whole another thing.
Think I got this for my tenth birthday, right at the start of summer vacation in 1991. This game and soundtrack especially always take me right back to those days.
Played it with my grandma. She called it "Les Petits Soldats".
It is my favorite game on the NES, I bought it in 1990 almost on release. I am glad to read positive comments about it here, it was reviled in the last decades. I guess now that they are going to release it again, they thought a few positive comments would help. I won't comment the playthrough because I am a pro at this game and everyone else sucks at it! (Just having fun here).
Same here. I immediately knew I got my money's worth when I started playing it.
I played Snakes Revenge first (got it for Christmas) then played Metal Gear second. I have always loved SR for the music and nostalgia. So I will defend this game no matter what based on attachment. But I like your take on it. Thank you!
I am gonna be playing this when it gets rereleased in October with the Master Collection Volume 1.
why wait when you can play now
Are the NES games in that collection? I assumed from the trailer that it's going to be the MSX Computer games. If that's the case that NES games are in too, that's pretty nice of Konami.
I really liked this game & soundtrack. When I was a kid & saw it at a rental store in 90, I couldn't wait for the weekend to rent it.
"There is no trap on the train"
fantastic description as usual. your writing is a mellifluous work of art.
Thank you very much! 😊
Ah yes, the Metal Gear game in which Big Boss turns into Robocop.
For an NES game, that was a ridiculously cool last boss battle.
@@NintendoCompleteIt is definitely very different as the player can not attack Big Boss directly but must instead trick him to walk over mines.
The nostalgia is busting with this one I got this as one of my Christmas gifts in 1990 my dad mom bought me 20 nes games in a big macys box They would always do that every year
Some of the staff from "Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse" worked on this game. Best track in this game is the Boss music. As well as the Train and final Building tunes.
Which stuff from CV3 are in this game specifically?!
@@alxxz All I know is the people who worked on both games:
Takeshi Fujimoto = Designer
Hitoshi Akamatsu = Programmer
Yasuo Okuda = Programmer
@@VahanNisanian Interesting, thanks for the info. I wonder if Kojima had worked for one of the CastleVania games back in the day what we would have gotten?!
I remember beating this when I was a teen. I thought it was good, but that end part with the missile guidance made me so mad. I remember getting to it and my mom was screaming for me to come down to dinner. I finally had to go down, get my food, and came back up. I remember dripping ketchup from my burger all over my controller as I frantically tried to finish that last area and eating while doing it. It's cringe, I know, but it's one of those childhood memories that stick in my head. I finished the game and never played it again.
2:13:17 HE TURNS INTO!,... ROBOCOP?... Holy Crap!,...... Hold on Weak Point, Penetrate, Weak Point, Penetrate, Weak Point, Penetrate, Penetrate,... Penetrate!

"Skipping leg day helps the sneaks"
This is the reason Metal Gear series continues. If Kojima had not seen this, I guess we may or not have another Metal Gear game but not in Kojima’s style.
So what? Its still a good game on its own. People need to play it and then judge
I wasn’t sure if I beat this as a kid. I owned it and as I watched it I was like oh yeah big bosses weakness is his feet and the path for the missiles. Excellent game
Hi *@NintendoComplete* If you use *Hand Punch* instead of *Knife* then you will definitely get *Ammunitions/Rations* 😊😊😊
12-foot-tall Cyborg Big Boss should have been canon.
mañana lo sube Rubén tuesta
In the real "Metal Gear 2", contacting Kessler reveals that there was a rumor that Big Boss was part of the Snatcher project.
A vastly better game than "Metal Gear Survive" any day.
Oh God, yes. But then again, so was Balan Wonderworld, so not a high bar to clear 😂
that game was so FkN broken . you stuck in an area saved data with no food nor water it's over before you can even go very far to find resources. seems like that's all the game is about find food water and then die if you cant..
After 34 years of playing this game I didn't know that you were able to destroy the hovering shockers at 1:06:21, thanks for showing👍😎
This is a Konami musical masterpiece. It is the closest to sounding like a Naoki Kodaka (Sunsoft) soundtrack as any other Konami game I’ve heard.
I was just a kid in the 80’s but I remember seeing this game in a Lucky’s in California. My memory is a little foggy, but I could’ve sworn I rented this game from there
The music in this game is really good.
One more month til you can officially play this on Switch, XSX, PS5 and PC Steam
The music in the game is super cool, like the graphics for a nes title. no matter how bad the story is, the game itself is really good!
Screw the haters. I unironically love this game. Fantastic soundtrack (Ogura is an absolute mad lad), excellent graphics, and expanded Metal Gear gameplay. Only the story is batshit bonkers. Beyond that, it's a fine game.
The closest the "haters" ever got to playing this game was reading the Wikipedia page.
I can't believe there was a game this deep on the NES. Gave it a try, very difficult, don't think I would've got too far with it as an eight year old lol.
The sound track and effects remind me of TMNT.
Ah, the good old days. I made it to Big Boss back in the day but could never beat him. Always thought it was funny in the tunnel sections that you avoided detection by the enemy soldiers just by laying down right in front of them lol
Very cool! Fantastic!
They call the boss "big boss" and that's exactly what we get here, not to mention metal gear is actually in the game.
Don't care if it's canon or not it's a great game.
Still remember when i saw the cover for this game when it released, i was not entirely sure it was the sequel to Metal Gear which i loved back then but it had the same type of spelling and the name Snake so i assumed it was and when i played it i was not dissapointed at all. It quickly became one of my favorite games on the NES.
Getting to the first boss and hearing them say, "No one can avoid our attack" and watching you run to the corner to do just that made my day. The game seems decent enough and felt Metal Gear-sy, so it's funny that Kojima got so mad about it.
Haha yeah, and why do they look like a football team at practice?
Because they tried making a sequel to HIS game behind his back without him knowing it. Man, Konami has always been shitty to him
Not sure if he was pissed about it. He heard about it from one of the developers while they were on the train together and the developer telling Kojima that he still thought that Kojima would be able to make a true and better sequel to Metal Gear 1.
@@TheDutchGhost Which he did
@@topfranluis1Yep. MG2SS was my first Metal Gear game and a good entry into the series.
Later on I also enjoyed Ghost Babel which I want to see a remake of and a sequel.
Watching this i can fully understand that 6 year old me couldn't beat this game.
Snake looks like Arnold Schwarzenegger in Predator
Holy crap the game would always freeze when the zipcar guard would spot me and the space guys would flood the screen ... I had to code bypass the section seeing how you avoided them has me kicking myself lol.
Ooh dear this game lol. But to be fair, there are things to like about it such as presentation and the amazing soundtrack. Also, it deserves its due on paving the way on allowing Metal Gear to become a series.
Not really, that’s what the actual sequel to the actual Metal Gear did
The first Metal Gear and this one need a remake / remaster with the Unreal 5 Engine. I would buy them in an instant! :) These 2 are timeless classics.
Game is one of reasons MG2: Solid Snake was made in first place :) But even without that, it was still fun, unlike that other non Kojima MG...Survive
Konami sure didn’t learn from the first two times they tried this stunt
The Best Metal Gear Ending no one would expected from a Metal Gear Spin off Sequel!
Big Boss as a Terminator was epic... Congratulations on Preventing World Destruction!
Like Defeating Cipher itself that it went Homicidal.
it's ROBOCOP Clone Big Boss Same Cyborg Unlike The Terminator Clone Style
HE TURNS INTO!,... ROBOCOP?... Holy Crap!,...... Hold on Weak Point, Penetrate, Weak Point, Penetrate, Weak Point, Penetrate, Penetrate,... Penetrate!
ROBOBOSS IS NO MORE!
Rerez The Just Bad Games
Looking at this hindsight I would prefer to have gotten the official MG2. But you can't keep a good game down. I still enjoy this ambitious side-sequil.
Dang Snake just swats basic enemy guards like bug's in this version❗
You sure that's not Ryu from Street Fighter?
So binoculars are called a telescope and an optic lens in this game.
got this game from a flea market in seattle back in 1991 when i was at the age of 16' my mom bought it for me.
Oh, look, it's jacked up snake lol. 😂 The best thing about this game is the soundtrack!! I dont care if it's not canon to metal gear, I love it still to this day. Also killing metal gear in this one was a pure pain in the ass!!
I just finished it on MTCOLLECTION, and I was surprised, for a game without Kojima's involvement, it's pretty good. I had more fun with it than with the NES port of the original.
Those 2 boss battles looked very frustrating especially guiding the missiles.
Trust me, EVERY boss in this game is a frustrating experience lol
Rerez did a video on this one. They really didn't like it.
Jogo excelente. Para poucos. Lembro que, na minha turma de amigos, apenas eu gostava.
Need 2 remake this awesome game
Yeah. This & metal gear 1 & 2 need a remake yesterday
Classic game such a good sequel
Every 30 or 40 year old’s first game in 1990 was Super Mario. This was actually my first game.
Mine was Mega Man 2, could've been 1990. I also played this game at the house of my 4 years older friend.
Some say that this game was "only released in North America", but that obviously isn't true. I also own the PAL version today,
So, was John Turner an actual person? Or did he never exist in the first place? He just disappears right after intentionally surrendering himself to the enemy, and then we fight a faker… Also, this game was literally my first exposure to the Metal Gear franchise growing up, but I could never get past the first boss as a kid.
He could've been killed by the enemy.
@@Sephiroth08150 We never find out.
I remember the main villain's name being "Highrolla Cockamamie".......
So where exactly does this take place? And WTAF happened to Snake being part of Foxhound?
This isn’t cannon, but presumably in its timeline it takes place a couple years after Outer Heaven and Snake is now Lieutenant Snake.
Cool game.
Here because of Just Bad Games.
I feel asleep again
By the way. The guy’s from rerez that made a video of this game on just bad games. This game is not a part of the metal gear franchise. This wasn’t made by Hideo Kojima. Am just stating a fact. If you already know you can just ignore this. Am not here to start fights. If you like the game that perfectly fine. Everybody has their own opinion on the game. Not everyone is going to have a good opinion on the game.
Metal Gear Snake's Revenge
I will physically fight anyone saying "Bro its not canon"
It's probably the best game of the franchise.
Also, golden rule of musical banger in stage 1 is still in effect. What a fantastic song I can never forget.
Nah you won’t do that. Because “Bro” I’ll throw you over my shoulder easily. But you still won’t do that. Anyway, no it isn’t Canon to the Metal Gear games, however it still looks like a solid NES GAME indeed.
Awesomeness video please do tee off for sega dreamcast please thanks ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Yesss!
This is almost like Bionic Commando.
what am i meant to do just to get past those underwater barriers?
With explosives.
Snake's Revenge was 100× better than og Nes Metal Gear.
A rerez classic
"Metal Gear..."
“It can’t be...
Ration Thief Simulator
This game look like playing the Nintendo metal gear
Though not canonical wouldn’t this imply that you Punished Venom Snake twice, now?
I'm assuming Bruce Lee taught Snake man .. but 🤷🏽♀️🤷🏽♀️
A Hideo Kojima (UNOFFICAL) Game.
This game is great. Cult of Kojima be damned.
I never completed this game lol
Love You Sam 💞
His name is not Sam. His name is Alex.
Y’all are tryna pretend that all of the games without Kojima in them aren’t the worst ones. Keep coping
It’s not even that it lacks Kojima … it is just unironically not good
Bad game design (like the fact that you can get spotted immediately after a screen transition is just unfair), unfair trial and error moments , those dogshit side scrolling segments,
It isn’t bad because it lacks Kojima ,.. it just isn’t good
@@AmirysMewen All im saying is that his Metal Gear 2 is much better
@@topfranluis1oh I misread your comment I thought you were defending the game lol
@@AmirysMewen I never would lol
Easier than the first but still a good game. The Kojima purists can clean my dishes and mop my floor anytime now.
Why would they care? He never hated this game and I'm not sure where people are getting the info that he did.
@@yatheo2969 not him, rather the fanboys. The non-canonical aspect has been brought up often as a game flaw.
@@mr.g4990In the same year Metal Gear 2 Solid Snake was released, a game superior in every way to Snake's Revenge. There are several quality spin-offs in the MG saga, such as Ghost Babel, Portable Ops, Rising, but Snake's Revenge is a 6.5/10 game. You only remember it for nostalgia
@@MattiaCattaneo-tw1qn Still a good enough game then. You are agreeing to my original point.
These 8 bit games are mostly bashed because it's fashionable to do so.
@@mr.g4990I mean, the first Metal Gear port to the NES was really bad, I tried playing it, but it gog really frustrating
The worst spin-off of the Metal Gear Saga
Always thought this game was amazing. And I dont care what anyone says..... Metal Gear on NES doesn't deserve the shit it gets.
Its nearly the exact same game as the original that got all the praise.
Instead of the game starting in OuterHeaven..... you need to find it first by searching the jungle. Thats more bad ass if you ask me.
The only complaint I had was there was no Metal Gear boss fight...instead you blow up the computer that controls it all. MG was probably stipped from the game due to limitations. I can deal with the little differences.
Snakes Revenge is a better game than both in my opinion.
