I have similar sentiments regarding the Megaman X Legacy collection. Capcom could've updated those games with new features and even fixed some of the glitches from the originals. True, they made some improvements and added some features, but it's like they mainly used a PS2 emulator and called it a day.

@@Westile yeah, it doesn't calculate vertex points the same way the other consoles did. instead of floating points, it gave some rounded numbers and that resulted in the vertex popping which you see there. SOME games like Tomb Raider for instance sort of worked around this by having both more topology (basic subdivision) and bigger models so the issue was a lot less noticable
I think my favorite part about DuckStation is that, while it doesn't look like a PS2 game, it definitely doesn't look like a PS1 game. It's as if there were some system in between the two that was made. This is Playstation 1.5 level graphics.
A lot of the textures had more detail buried than the resolution could even display at the time, almost like the devs imagined it being played at higher resolutions someday.

It had higher pixel fillrate and memory bandwidth than Xbox, thanks to EDRAM, on top of being completely custom hardware, whilst Xbox and Gamecube were basically glorified PCs (CPU, GPU and RAM). PS2 didn't even have a GPU, it did all its effects in software and was incredibly programmable.
Aside from the oddly streched UI when using the Widescreen Hack, its honestly sad how DuckStation is still kicking Konami's ass with the recent Master Collection
there's something so charming in using colored vertex lighting as opposed to per pixel lighting. I can't wait to check out small soldiers for the PSX with duckstation, that is a game that looks so magical and pretty, even for PSX
This totally fixes a problem I have always have with PS1 games and that was that the low resolution and warping always messed up with my perception of depth. Even back in the day, in platformers like Crash I would fail some jumps because of the background looking too distorted.
Honestly MGS1 is still one of the moat striking title visually, the whole game's aestetic is so grounded. Love it. DuckStation really is a game changer.

Old games are already awesome. Asking for remakes and remasters is rewarding the wrong behavior. We just have to play the classics in the most effective way, with modern machines, current technology.

@@stevemuzak8526 Native res looks cool dude, it feels like a 2D game, upscaling the resolution makes the game feel aged because you can actually see the 3D.
I find that Duckstation is near flawless at playing at native resolution, while scaling up internal resolution introduces non-native visual errors that enhancements can't entirely solve. For the most part it works great but there are certain moments/scenes where textures or geometry will sort of bug out in unique ways. Enabling CPU mode helps but does not eliminate. The soliton radar for example acts a little funny, cones of vision can become misaligned with the dots.

4x internal gives the cleanest scaling I've found across a variety of games 2D and 3D. A bit soft on a 1440p/4K display but still very clean. 2x doesn't scale cleanly with image filters and anything higher makes 2D and 3D mismatch really heavily.
If there's a mod for bumping up the internal resolution + the geomerty correction, the master collection with those mods will be 100% perfect to play on.@@usul573
On the fly AI upscale textures and a blanket AI upscale image wouldn’t any different and isn’t very sensible, it’s much easier and more realistic to just AI upscale and replace all the texture files in an automatic and manually reviewed process not at runtime

I'm new to duckstation. Gave it a few hours yesterday and really enjoyed it, games look fantastic. One thing I couldn't solve was getting the games to run at 60fps, I enabled the ntsc hack which forces the 60hz version but it didn't work with any game. Do you have any ideas?

I'm having a strange glitch with Duckstation in the Sniper Wolf fight... After Maryl is shot, I have to go back to get the Sniper Rifle but the door at the underground path, the door i've passed 2 seconds ago, simply don't open. I get a buzz like i don't have the right keycard and that's it, i'm stuck!
and there trying to rerelease it along with 2 and 3 and all the previous games in the series as a vol 1 master collection....for £50 at native 1080p on PC...are you fuckin kidding me? you can just go and download a rom for free and use the emulator and get better results.
I played Black Mesa recently instead of Half-Life 1, but I am not sure if I should do the same thing with Metal Gear and play Twin Snakes instead of the original. What do you think?

@ChillLetsPlays CRTs hid a lot of flaws. Plus, these games tend to look better on CRTs than flat panels because of its idiosyncracies.
This basically made THE TWIN SNAKES on GameCube pointless lol. Awesome graphical upgrade.
The last part was really helpful on why Geometry Correction is a helpful tweak.

throw some texture filtering with mipmapping and multi sampling on it and it will look beautifully good.
i think that's overkill, but i use a measly 1080p monitor.

The problem with games like MGS is when they are viewed on led screens. They don't look too bad when playing on a CRT.

I haven't had problem yet. but I didn't Enable Depth Buffer and CPU Mode.

I use the duckstation core in retroarch but yeah it's pretty amazing. I guess it can use custom textures now like beetle psx hw.

Yeah there's mods. When in doubt check PC Gaming Wiki. Though with the game and mods being updated sometimes things might break or need more work.

The NTSC hack only applies for PAL games that originally runs at 50hz. And no, that's not how FPS work for most of PS1 games.
Most NTSC games run at 30 FPS, Most NTSC fighting games run at 60 FPS
You can try overclocking the CPU. That increases FPS in certain games depending on how they've been programmed.

and restart your game (don't use quick load)
DuckStation even lets you play the game at fckn 20:9 (yup, not 21:9 but almost at least)

How does this game look when cpu overclocked to 60fps? When used on Silent Hill 1 it plays like a dream.
