In this video, you're going to learn about improvising with chord tones. There is a common debate between improvising with scales vs chord tones. I think a combination of the two is the most effective.
I'm going to show you some helpful exercises you can use to help practice the chord tones of any chord progression.
If you want to see the rest of this lesson and get access to the entire course (Fundamentals Of Improvisation) - you can think about becoming a member of PianoPig Academy!

This is literally the only piano channel where I feel like something's working out for me! 😅 I'm officially a Piano Piglet! 🐷
Adren Reuel Singh [Official] he breaks things down efficiently when I need to refresh what I already know or wanna perfect to explain to other musicians he clicks it in my head
Man thank you so much for these videos. I started learning how to improv with your blues scale. What i love the most about your videos is that when you explain it all becomes so clear. Thank you very much
No worries! Great to hear you enjoyed the video :)
Amazing lesson. Thank you.
So fun to listen to! Great Job!
i love your channel. handy ideas and sounds good
if you could please explain in future videos the importance of the notes you are moving, you never mentioned about what you were playing in your left hand, or how you could use this theory in other keys!
I enjoy what you do but I’d love to learn more of what you do
Hey Simon. Would you think of releasing more about chord tones here in RUclips? Couldn't actually get where were you going with all of this
And although I would love to join the academy, it's just not feasible for me at this moment! Cheers from Brazil
Very Good video Tutorial.
Mr.pig can you please do a video about improvising using guide tones.
Hi, I'm looking for a method to improvise on all the scales without having to remember them. Could you recommend something? I have only found the solution of buying many roli lumi in parallel. Thanks!
can you refer which videos talking about 7th dominant chord could change whatever the notes you want? I am quite confused about that.
Thank you for the amazing tips Simon! Now I wanna know why did you choose a piggy as you slogan 😋
Thanks a lot bro :)
No worries!
Do a Dm9 is just and Fmaj7?
Would this be a minor chord progression? i - III - iv - v - i If it is...wouldn't the 5th chord be a flat e minor? Even though it sounds good, I'm confused why it is major. Thanks.
Perhaps I missed it in a different video but when playing the Cmaj(9) chord you didn’t play the root, just E, G, B, D, wouldn’t this be considered an Emin7?
It's called a 'rootless voicing'. It could be seen as an Em7, but it also functions as a Cmaj9. Check out this video I made on rootless voicings: ruclips.net/video/w2V_1NkiK3c/видео.html
PianoPig Why don’t you tell the audience that before you do it.
Willabe Storms he probably didn’t because rootless voicings are super common in jazz
He did, that video was uploaded 10 months before this one, you need to watch more PianoPig!
I have been watching piano pig for a while and I realised that I forgot to subscribe and I was wondering why I didn't get any new video updates😭😭
But i have subscribed
Nice !! Thanks for sharing !!
I dont understand how you create the left hand....
Right hand is straightful.
Left hand is a mystery, ..., hiw can you name left hand A, as hou start on G ???
G is 7th of A, so is it a rule to start a chord on the 7th as base ??
Apparently not.
Can you explain how it workd ??
Thanks.
C
Awesome videos! What is the software/app you use to record these on the animated piano keys above your actual piano?
It's called Midiculous 😀
1st like yay. actually love this chanel
That's good to hear 😀
Do you have an affiliate program
No I don't at this point in time
What are the chords of his intro?
ruclips.net/video/x8J9CzSXrUE/видео.html
That last E7 part sounded so smooth. Damn.
For the dominant 7 chord, wouldn't the chord tone be a flat 7? I'm confused.
Yes it should! Did I make a mistake somewhere in the video?
Cufflinks
@3:49 isn't that an F maj 7th, your calling it a D minor 9 (F A C E)
It is an f maj 7th but functions as a D min 9th as well
@@lamberekmate1539 a 'rootless chord'--found the concept on another PP video--thanks!
The 9th note sound illegal :( always
But all the chord tones up to the 13th is basically every note in the scale 🤷♂️
It’s not possible to not hit one as long as you play the scale.
you talk a lot but are good on the
piano
Piano pig is pp
It certainly is!
@@Piano_Pig :D
Is it ok to enjoy the video but not your face?
thanks for the infomercial. Thanks for nothing. I like your music and sent you an email months ago which you never answered. Makes your operation look like a scam. I don't think I'll join your "academy".
How many times did you try getting his attention so far?
yeah man why don't we get free atention if we don't hold enough virtue to understand your video? sigh
Richard Friedlander I try to reply to as many emails as possible but I get a lot of them from subscribers so it's sometimes impractical to reply to everyone. I can assure you the Academy isn't a scam, just a way for me to teach the world how to play the piano whilst making a living at the same time!
