  • BUY, LEASE OR FINANCE A LAND ROVER DEFENDER FROM OSV: bit.ly/3jlkj9B
    The new-era Land Rover Defender brings the design of this legendary Solihull model bang up to date. Despite the modern tech, it remains as solid and uncompromising as it's always been, with off road ability to worry a Challenger tank. Approach it as an alternative to modern luxury SUVs and you've missed the point. Buy a Discovery for that. Here instead, is the hardest wearing, most capable and most cost effective proper off-roader that sensible money can buy.
    Background
    You may have forgotten what a real Land Rover is - and what it looks like. These days, we associate the Solihull maker with lifestyle SUVs and Range Rover products. Rather than the kind of farm working 4x4 that Maurice Wilks developed for agricultural use back in the Forties. There are still some people who feel that this is exactly what a true off-roader should be. It shouldn't feel like a car on stilts. It needs to be rugged, practical and offer a number of field-serviceable parts.
    Is that what we have here? Everything has been changed to differentiate this modern era Defender from the Land Rover original - but ultimately, nothing is really very different. Thank goodness for that.
    Driving Experience
    Engine-wise, the range is fundamentally built around an in-line six cylinder Ingenium MHEV mild hybrid diesel engine. It's offered in three forms - the D200 (with 200PS and 500Nm of torque), the D250 (with 249PS and 570Nm of torque) and the D300 (with 300PS and 650Nm of torque). The D300 powers to 62mph in 6.3s. If you want efficiency but don't want to fuel from the black pump, there's also a P400e Plug-in Hybrid option with the longer 110 body style. This PHEV variant uses a 2.0-litre four cylinder petrol engine with 300PS mated to a 105kW electric motor powered by a 19.2kWh battery, this combination producing a combined 404PS output and offering an all-electric driving range of 27 miles. There are also two conventional petrol options, the 300PS P300 and the 400PS P400 variant. 8-speed auto transmission is mandatory across the range.
    Land Rover insists that this new-era Defender is even more capable than its predecessor, despite the fact that, unlike that previous model, there's no hard core separate chassis or rigid axles. Instead, the architecture is fundamentally the same as that which features on the current Discovery, Range Rover Sport and range Rover modes. But it rides on reinforced suspension with greater travel and there's more ground clearance too. Both coil springs and air suspension are available. As you'd expect, there's permanent 4WD, along with a Terrain Response system allowing you to set the car up for various driving conditions (or you can simply select an automatic setting and let the Defender handle everything for you). Both body shapes have impressive mud plugging stats; an approach angle of 38-degrees and a departure angle of 40-degrees. It can climb a 45-degree slope and descent a 47-degree one. And it'll wade through water up to 900mm deep. Try doing that in your lifestyle SUV.
    Design and Build
    You'd recognise this as a Defender - there are lots of design cues ensuring that, including squared-off wheelarches, super-short front and rear overhangs and so-called 'Alpine light' narrow windows set into the roof. Like the old Defender, it's possible to buy both three and five-door body shapes and, to keep some historical continuity, as before these are badged '90' and '110' respectively. Modern touches include full-LED headlights and a square body-coloured panel in the rear side glass (which is optional on the '90' and standard on the '110').
    Inside, the exposed metal on the doors and the minimalist dashboard give an appropriately Defender-style feel but this time round, the cabin's wider, so you won't be bashing your wrists on the doors every time you twirl the wheel round.

    The absolute most informative and well done review I’ve seen. Well done Sir. I’ve just turned 21,000 miles on my P400 and it’s been absolutely Wonderful. Oh one thing , the rear seats do fold all the way down . There is a strap in the fold between the upper and lower sections. Pull that strap up and the lower section can be folded forward allowing room for the upper back to fold all the way down and seat evenly with the rest of the rear floor. Cheers

    The Defender continues to be a unique vehicle. It's tough to see the divide between people who like the older models versus those who like the newer one. At the end of the day, this vehicle is a beast. And the customization factor is out of this world. Glad to see the Defender reincarnated for another generation. -North44Rovers

    The seats on the 110 do, indeed, fold completely flat. You just need to flip the seat bottom forward before folding down the rears.

    • @coreyk288
      @coreyk288 3 года назад +1

      It's worth noting to future buyers that the 110 fold flat rear seats are an additional option that must be specified. It is possible to get a spec that does not have the ability. As is the case with my recently delivered 110. You can get it close to flat without the option specified but it won't go all the way down unfortunately. So long story short, make sure you spec it if you need it!

    An excellent review, and i've watched them all. Watched every minute too. I'm really impressed by the sustained detailed commentary - without the any apparent use of an autocue:) One slight challenge though - all other reviews and documentation i've seen, including the build website options, say the optional raised Air intake does not extend the max wading depth of 900mm, where you indicated otherwise? Lastly, no one ever seems to mention what the silver enclosures are for in the rear load space? I've often seen a big silver enclosure on the left, and a smaller one on the right. (and i don't mean the optional compressor option..). Thanks for a great review, superbly & eloquently executed.

    I changed a Cherokee of 15 years for a Disco 5 in 2017 and a Sport in early 21. They latter are not obviously the Defender but they are just as capable, with low range, wading, diffs., etc. As long as you don’t worry too much about the paint and you use off-road tires. I might consider the Defender next.

    Great review, but one mistake. The 5-seat 110 does allow for the 2nd row seats to lay completely flat. The procedure is to pivot the seat cushion/bottom forward, then fold the seat back down. Presto…flat.
    Unfortunately, if configured with the optional 3rd row seats (5+2 configuration), this is not the case and the 2nd row seats will not lay flat. Why Land Rover allowed this compromise I will never know, because my 2017 Disco with 7 seats allows a completely flat cargo area - therefore it can be accomplished, they just chose not to.

    Great review. Two mistakes though. In the 5 seat 110, the seats do fold completely flat. Lift the base of the center seat, fold down the headrests and they fold completely flat. Not so with the 5+2 model though. Additionally, the original defender never allowed for you to stand on the bonnet. The chequer plates were after market add ons that people made to allow for that. So land rover made a fake version of an aftermarket part and that to me is the silliest part of this otherwise brilliant vehicle.

    13:40 I've had my trouble-free P300 for a year now and have used it several times for pulling my 2 tonne boat on my 1.3 tonne trailer. My longest single towing trip of 400 miles took me exactly 8 hours, including two brief stops. Do I like the new Defender? Yes and no. More yes though. Would I go offroading with it? Yes. Would I chose it as an overlanding or exploring vehicle like the old one or a Land Cruiser? Hell, no. It's not just TFL that it's issues. It was also the german Explorer Magazine that took it offroading to the french Alpes that had some issues. Imagine that happens somewhere in Botswana, Kazakhstan or Mongolia.

    • @shepleonard8695
      @shepleonard8695 3 года назад

      If the other big nail in the coffin is that you cannot add an aftermarket front bumper and winch combination to this vehicle you can even add a wench to it. Contact your local land rover dealership and ask them if they will install a winch for you and they'll tell you they can't do it because there's a wiring harness issue that will cause the entire electronic system to fail.
      The great off-road manufacturing company ARB was contacted in Bay said that they could not do it nor did I have any plans on making an offering for such. Now keep in mind they offer this 4 Toyota land rover and Jeep is well as Nissan.
      Land rover rush to this in they don't care about meeting the market need or want from those of us that want a true offer a vehicle there trying to make luxury 4 by 4 vehicles for people who live in cities.
      I guess those of us that actually won't a true bear bones off road vehicle are just gonna have to continue to hunt down old Defenders.
      The silly thing is land rover makes all the electronic off road aids targeted to people who don't know how to drive. Nor will they ever learn how to properly drive because they are completely dependent on the preprogrammed driving modes.
      A GPS in a dedicated off-road vehicle is pointless. Everyone uses tablets or smartphones today Uploaded with better off road and trail maps that are not available on a standard GPS.

This vehicle, which I could very easily afford, is far too complex, far too unreliable and far too expensive. I will stick with my current Defender 90 TD5 which is now just over 15 years old and and the only replacement parts during that time have been tyres, widscreen wiper blades and wiper motor and battery (and it is now apprecciating in value).

    As for the introduction, most sensible money goes on one ton pickup trucks for offroad utility use. Make no mistake, this is just an alternative to the equally capable Discovery5 and Range Rover in whatever guise you choose. They are all variations on the same theme. It has nothing to do with replacing the old Defender. It just doesn't. Look at it as the true successor to the Discovery4 if you like, while the Disco5 chases the Range Rover even further upmarket. The Velar, Defender, Discovery5 and Range Rover Sport all overlap greatly in price depending on spec, which is a massive problem for JLR, because their main rivals are all in-house, cannibalising sales from each other.
    The vehicle is just as impressive as all other Land Rover vehicles and just as ridiculously over-priced once loaded with options that are standard on many other vehicle brands. It is very easy to specify up to £10k in accessories and options, even on top priced models.

    The new Defender while good is not as good as its older brother.
    There was nothing wrong with the old Defender, all it needed was a few modern creature comforts added to the interior and they should have left everything else alone completely. The old saying applies "if it aint broke don't fix it".
    This redesign was done intentionally as have all off roaders as of late… it was done to target the urban community. No one is building dedicated off road vehicles anymore. There's a reason while the old defender was so popular it was rugged you could beat the hell out of it physically and mechanically and it just kept going.
    The other big issue with the new defender is the fact that you cannot put in after market which on this vehicle. Even when ARB was contacted about this they say they have no ability or any plans for doing so in the future. Land rover themselves if you call your local dealership ask them if they can fix one to the front of the vehicle will tell you they can't. I am sorry but this is just piss poor planning and performance on Land Rover's part.
    I'm in the camp that the vast majority of everyone within the land rover community is this new defender is blasphemy.

      60fps helps deliver content with constant motion (sports and video gaming) with less blur. A side effect of high fps is that some productions may look like a soap opera or reality TV.
      Lower frame rates (30 or 24) allow for some of that “cinematic” blur to communicate the feeling/style of the production and take us on a “journey” on the tele.
      Yuri from The Straight Pipes insists on 24fps. I prefer 4K@24fps
      Each has its merits and complications.
      Thanks for this in-depth summary and review of this fancy off-roader.

    • @LuvvSURYA
      @LuvvSURYA 3 года назад

      @@prabjitprabjit : Well, most other channels switched to 1080p 60fps not without a reason. Personally, I’d prefer 60fps over 4K resolution because it doesn’t make any difference watching the review at full hd or 4K on mobile or even laptop.
      There was a time in the past when we went crazy over the image quality and sharpness of even 720p. 1080p took the game even further. And it still is today unless you are watching the video on at least 55” 4K/8k tv. And there also the fact is that the advanced processing technology in TVs these days process the lower quality image to the maximum possible resolution of the tv (4K/8k). This means video with 1080p resolution would appear be much sharper on Tv than on laptop or mobile phones (without such image processing technology).
      This also means that it’s only the frame rate that is actual differentiator between the two types of videos - Full HD and 4K. And 60fps looks a lot smoother than the conventional 30fps.

    Was very curious about this product, having ridden the one of the earlier versions on a farm and around town. All l remember was it was very thirsty and seemed to spend more time with its bonnet up than down but when it ran it was great. Anyway seems some of those traits have not been improved upon. TFL the US youtube channel was at last count on their 3rd Defender in a matter of a few months, the first one went on a trail and was not the same as it developed some serious problems on its more or less maiden trip. l cannot recall what the issue was with the second one.
    Anyway point is these are good when they run, if something should go awry better hope its still covered by the guarantee or have very deep pockets. It could just be teething issues as this is as a new model but this is JLR so one can be forgiven for thinking its probably their nature. l cannot imagine how reliable this one will be given the many new fangled options it has e.g. the air suspension.
    It would be nice to see a comparison with the G-Wagen, the Jeep, The lancruiser/Prado, Nissan Patrol, Mitsubishi Shogun/Pajero if one can be found.

      As you say time will tell on reliability. Re TFL they somewhat stretched the truth in search of clicks and views once they realized that shouting out “we are on our third” go them huge coverage, clicks, views and all the extra money that comes with that. The first was a lemon pure and simple as that. It’s interesting to see LR have already dropped that engine. The second was fine only some poor LT tech broke it while fitting a winch. Not LR’s fault and I only hope the poor guy did not lose his job given the profile. But the vehicle was fine. The “third one” is running great. They refuse to do the simple things that have done in the other off roaders, Jeep, Land Crusiser etc , and fit off round tire’s, give a lift. Mean time there are hundreds upon hundreds of videos in the US and Canada of them crossing deserts or frozen tundra. Try autoplicity or shedlock2000 or many many more . Bad news sells of course and TFL and Andrew Saint Piers White know that. I’m not calling it a success but just give it some time and we will see. I am cautiously optimistic it will be around for a while, that LT will do derivatives to please the enthusiasts and it will turn out better than many are predicting .
