The runway's design is probably due to its role as an emergency landing site for NASA's Space Shuttle program. I believe it was extended to accommodate the Shuttle in case of an emergency landing. Today, I guess the runway serves a dual purpose, also supporting larger airplanes that may need to make emergency landings during trans-Pacific flights, which require a longer runway.
The part about NASA is correct and it's the only reason the runway was extended. Before the extension it was already long enough for a 707. The second part of your comment is incorrect. There are no trans-Pacific flights that fly in the vicinity of Easter Island, except for flights from Papeete (Tahiti) to Chile. Also, there is a special aviation rule that forbids planes from flying on a route near Easter Island if there is already a plane on its way to Easter Island (from Chile) that has passed the halfway point. At first glance you might think that a flight from Australia or New Zealand to Chile would fly close to Easter Island, but in reality the planes fly very close to the Antarctic and not anywhere near Easter Island.
i BELIEVE it was made longer by NASA so it could be used as a landing site for an aborted landing of the Space Shuttle. My best guess is its pointless and a waste of manpower and money to keep that runway kept in good form and every plane that nneeds to get in there can without that runway so there was no point.
When the runway before a displaced threshold is unfit for the surface movement of aircraft, a closed runway marking (i.e. a large X sign painted on the ground) should be provided.
I flew there and the flights are most of the time full. Smooth landing and amazing destination. The runway was used as an emergency strip for the space shuttle program, thus the displaced landing area and the "Xs" at the beginning of the runway.

This is a 10,900' runway NASA lengthened it in 1987 as an abort site for the Space Shuttle.
Well the way the Captain was bouncing around on the rollout it doesn't look like they done any maintenance since then...
Excellent video presentation 👏 👌 👍 😀 😊😊😊🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤.
AWESOME 👍❤......as always!!!!!! Thanks JP AND TEAM for your fantastic work!!!!! Have a nice week 💛💛 Many greetings!!!! Xx..........
Thank you much Betsy, you have a lovely weekend as well!

A greeting from the birds at 5:52
Nice
Thanks
ia orana, fortunately the Mataveri airstrip is long...
Best life best job ever
Very true :)
Why is the first quarter of the runway inop ? Is it wip ?
Its a displaced threshold for landing but they probably use it for takeoff.
@@justplanes it has X marks indicating it's closed. Nonstandard displaced threshold markings or closed?
✈️💪💪✌️💯👍
Thanks
5:25 Why did the airport waste the remaining runway?
i BELIEVE it was made longer by NASA so it could be used as a landing site for an aborted landing of the Space Shuttle. Good sir
Thanks

If the pilots are bouncing around like that, are the passengers getting tossed around too?
Depends on the runway. And mostly, if it weren’t for the seatbelt, we would be thrown forward.
787 air europa pls
jaja :)
Boa noite
Not a lot of traffic there....
Where can I buy a bouncy seat like that guy has!
How are the flaps down full with the gear up and no warning horn? Did that change, too!? And the first half of the runway closed? Wow…
They were not, when they lowered the landing gear flaps were set at 20, and later on, at 30 (full flaps).
Porqué hablan ingles?
Thought you’re not supposed to land on runways marked with an “X”

Nose a bit too high huh
Why is this monster plane landing on Easter Islsnd???
Because that was its' destination!

🇸🇪😔
Definitely not the remotest. Have you heard of Antarctica? 😂
The Boeing 787 cockpit would look so much more modern with Sidesticks😂😂😂
Can't see the statues 😂
I don’t think this is real
Why?
They’ve been making flights since 1967.
Big planes shouldn't be allowed to land on such an ecologically sensitive island
Why not? Are the people there not worthy of modern technology?
Displaced threshold. Gotta be a long run out

787 air europa pls
Yes, we are awaiting release from Air Europa for this program
