Just to add my vote for "You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive". Patty is a coal miner's daughter, just like her cousin Loretta Lynn. She lived through watching members of her family and loved ones falling to black lung. You will not regret hearing her story in this song.

There is a video on here of her doing You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive live for some sort of tv showcase. She spends a solid two or three minutes telling the audience why the song means so much to her and about her family history. Then she proceeds to give probably her best vocal performance ever. It is amazing to watch and actually really informative. The way she uses different mouth shapes or subtle changes in the tension of her jaw to raise and lower notes is crazy.

Definitely you'll never leave harlan alive. Patty is my all time favorite country female singer. She has that high lonesome sound that cuts like a knife like nobody else. She is royalty. BTW, she does this same song as a duet with Chris stapleton who does the man's perspective part. She came out of retirement to do that for a Kentucky benefit for those ravaged by natural disasters.

Add my vote for this song and "You'll never leave Harlan alive" with Chris Stapleton and the "Kentucky Rising" benefit in, I believe, 2022. Patty came out of retirement (since 2009) at Chris's request for this most soulful concert.

    • @joelrubinson9973

@@johnsonpaul1914 They also performed it at the CMA awards. It was a masterclass for this generation of top singers to hear Patty (the applause at the pauses in the singing was just great). IMHO, the best female country singer ever with that piercing high lonesome sound. In her 60s and retired, she still has got it. So best male singer on the planet (any genre) and best female singer...so amazing.

No, he's saying sorry because he's so used to saying it to keep the peace, whether he was wrong or not he always was sorry. This is a song about 2 people growing apart, because neither appreciates the struggle of the others life. She only sees her struggle with keeping the home and not being appreciated for the effort, he only his struggle to leave each day, all day to come home to be under appreciated too. they are blinded to each others pain by their own.

I grew up around Patty Loveless back in the day she was the lead singer for my dad's band she sung Rock back then she loved Linda Ronstadt the Eagles things like that my family is very musical so I would sing with her when my dad would be playing we would go to an old barn and just have so much fun because they were really loud so they found an old barn to play in my dad and my sister passed away two years ago on the same day 12 hours apart..
I'm the last of my family I miss him so much I really miss my dad playing his guitar he was so amazing Patty Loveless said in an interview once that her best guitarist was my dad his name was Randy Walker and by the way she is so incredibly nice love you Patty I always will..

you have to read between the lines in this song. it starts out she has all she can stand. she leaves the car, the kids, the keys, the laundry and the grocery list. she doesnt want to do it anymore. she claims he doesnt know he she is, so he shouldnt care if she leaves. BUT, when the husband sees what she has done, he thinks he should call her and apologize. but he doesnt know why. she hasnt told him anything. he goes to work everyday and comes home to her, does what a husband should do. BUT, she doesnt think about him, only herself, so he tells her you dont even know who i am, SO WHY SHOULD I CARE IF YOU GO. its a good song, a sad song, but its also what happens all the time in marriages, the wife cooks, cleans, takes care of the kids while he is at work. she looks at it as if she is at home all the time and he is gone all the time. she only sees it from her side. typical.

The version of this song with her and Chris Stapleton is amazing! He sings the man’s view and adds a few runs in. ❤

This is a terrific song, and another in a similar vein is "By the Time I Get to Phoenix" by Glen Campbell. Great job Britt!

Check out The Night's Too Long, from her early arrow with Columbia Records. And I love all of her stuff but I'm just saying man, that's where she got noticed. And had so many hits. The night's too long is an Anthem for women. And really if you think about it everybody. And it was a hit. I think you would love it.

MUST do Patty singing You'll never leave Harlan Alive from the Austin City Limits TV show 2001. It has about 3.5 million views.

That high-pitched bit at the beginning is steel guitar; it can make some amazing sounds, normally goes lower with a more honky-tonk sound. Lots of people live in marriages where they're really just splitting rent on a place to sleep while they work, or work out, or whatever. For different twist on spouses not appreciating each other, check out Brad Paisley "I'm Gonna Miss Her".

“You’ll never leave Harlan alive” is great. “How Can I Help You Say Goodbye” is absolutely devastating and never fails to put a massive lump in my throat.
