  • "I opened my eyes. Goodbye city, hello blue skies, palm trees and lapping waters. We were at an open-sided restaurant by the sea outside Krabi Town, used as a hub for the tourist-transport companies. Backpackers piled out of the VIP buses in their usual weary silence, with the odd random nutter spouting crap to himself. I quickly found some space and cleaned my teeth in an outdoor sink in the fresh morning Sun of the South. I looked at myself in the mirror with a satisfied smile. I wasn't one of them here. Tiny whispers of waves lapped against the grass and rocks behind me. I turned around and looked out at the sparkling radiance of the Andaman Sea, where the blue waters shimmer with diamonds and dreams. It was time to shine.
As my boat skirted across the magnificent vista of the ocean I felt like a conquering hero returning home from war. The shadow of Ko Phi Phi loomed into vision, a lurid rainbow of colours gradually flourishing from the dark silhouette. We curved round the headland and Ton Sai Bay spread into view, pulling me back to where all men want to go. The golden Sun above, the warm sea, the shining beaches, towering cliffs, mysterious jungle and the party that never stops. The island of fantasy, dreams and illusion, a light so bright it burns into your brain. The island that exists in a bubble, too perfect to be real, too real to comprehend."
Extract from 'I of the Sun' by Richard Arthur.
