Tyler, Thank you for the honesty. I am 57 years old and have struggled through life in the USA because I bought into the false narrative we are all brainwashed into believing growing up in the states. Go to school, get a job, get on the hampster wheel and pedal as hard as you can to buy shit and attempt to keep up appearances while your soul dies. I raised 3 children and my youngest is off to college. I am getting divorced after 28 years. Substance abuse has been part of my story as a means for coping with my depression, anxiety, and hopelessness in spite of providing a comfortable life for my family. That responsibility kept me trapped for 30 years. I am now looking at leaving the US and coming to Vietnam for a new adventure and a cleansing of my soul. Buying a one way ticket. There is more to life than working like a dog at jobs you hate only to buy shit you don't need. I am excited for a new adventure and a new way of living. Thank you for always keeping it real and showing us that we have options and don't have to be slaves to the American Dream because for most of us the Ameican Dream died a long time ago and we are just limping through life in search of meaning.
I'm pretty sure there are more than a few financial analysts in NYC right now thinking man my job is so freakin unfulfilling -- tired of working 14 hour days just to get that bonus.... Something's missing...

I can't say that I'm depressed but I have been mostly unhappy with my life (I'm 52) here in the U.S. I plan on making a move overseas but the little voice in my head is telling me that maybe the problem is me. Like the saying goes "wherever you go, there you are" so I am glad to hear that it worked out for you. I am hoping the same for myself. I know I'm not crazy.
Wow...music was your job. I sang in a rock band for 8 years but it was just a fun thing that paid for itself. Also divorced after 32 years. I recently spent a month motorbiking in Vietnam, including Danang and Ho Chi Mihn. Don't forget all of the other fantastic places in Vietnam. Congratulations on the perfect plan!

Those who called you a loser, are actually sore losers. You live your life, they live theirs. They don't pay your bills. They don't experience your pain, your suffering. Nobody understands you better than yourself. If you do something that makes your life better and hurts or kills no one; I don't see anything wrong with it. You deserve to be happy. Life is too short, so live your life to the fullest and don't take anything for granted.

#1....NOT A LOSER!!! I've been to VN 3x. once for 3 weeks, a year later for 4 weeks, and two years later for 3 months. I've never felt so alive as when I was there. I have nothing against my home country and love it in the USA but my health and vitality are 10x in VIetnam. Good for you that you are able to make the move long term.
It's just like you took my story and spoke on my behalf, the thing was you made it to Vietnam and I'm still stuck in North America, because my family didn't want to let me move to Vietnam. After highschool I suffered severe depression, and I thought about returned to Vietnam just to say goodbye to my uncles and aunts, then I would ended all. Surprisingly I discovered there's another different world and lifestyle out there that's not North America and I changed my mind, now I'm waiting for the day that I could do what you do. Tyler, I felt exactly same way when I left Vietnam to U.S. I wasn't addicted to anything. I don't smoke and drink. It was extremely hard for me to live in Vietnam. I didn't have any chance for better live. I was hungry and drove bicycle to school and work. Thanks to the U.S.A. We have a lot better live in the U.S. I always appreciate the U.S.A
Those poor American losers simply cannot compete with new immigrants and talents coming from abroad. They are losers in their own country and in order to survive they have to leave it for a much poorer, much less developed country to continue their life.
I was born in Vietnam and left when I was young. I haven’t been back in the last 20 years. I wish Vietnamese treat you well because you also bring a different world and culture to the people. I hope there will be more Americans like you living in Vietnam. I didnt come back often because the Vietnam when I left was very different. But one thing i hope hasn’t changed: it’s the people’s spirit, their kindness and friendliness. You helped to make life more colourful in Vietnam and make it a more interesting place. I am sure local people learn a lot from you too.
You are living a life many people can only dream about! Don't think about what other will say or think! You seem to be happy and have found yourself. It is not about losers vs winners in life, it is about finding yourself and finding where you "fit". :) Comparing yourself to others is not a path to happiness. Happiness IME is about valuing what you have, not what you don't have. :)
This video came up in my feed randomly and it has touched me. I applaud your attempt to tell your truth and claim your truth. While I have no experience with alcoholism or even Vietnam, I’m very happy that you made that move and it provided you with a respite, an ability to start again, to be who you want to be, respect yourself, perhaps find love or even meaningful relationships. Actually, we don’t have a great deal in common except I completed my surgical residency in Los Angeles and did in fact become a doctor. I’m a 66 year old Black American doctor and married to a Filipina for 36 years(she was a nurse at the hospital, and she just couldn’t resist! Lol), and we have four daughters and two grandchildren. So we literally have very little in common except I can certainly understand those feelings of ineptitude or even imposter syndrome that we all can suffer from over the course of our lives. Keep telling your story because it matters, it matters to many, can inspire many, can motivate many, and can be the impetus for many. It will certainly happen, and honestly, it will likely be with someone you’re never likely to meet. And that is okay. Thank you for the video and I’m rooting for you in your future endeavors.
Courage is not the lack of fear, unlike what many people tend to think. Courage is looking into your fears' eyes and saying: "I see you but you won't stop me!" As someone having gone through some similar stuff, I can tell you that what you've done (Moving to Vietnam and work there, all in order to find your life purpose) was incredibly courageous. Living takes courage, looking for your life purpose despite being battered by a system that wants you to become an unfeeling and unthinking robot takes courage. You were and still is a brave man. Never forget it!

I guessed many have been through the same path you did, but not all could make it because nobody could understand their suffering and they have not been courageous enough to save themselves. Luckily you have stepped up to save yourself. Your personal story is quite inspirational, which is hopefully a good example for many to follow. The fact that mentioning the words "fish sauce" brought a big smile to your face, says something about Vietnam. It's said Vietnam is a land of healing the invisible wounds. Yes it truly is.
Great video and vulnerability. I'm just over 10 years sober from alcohol. I was not courageous for many years. I'm likely moving to Asia in the next 6-9 months and Vietnam looks awesome. I have a community in the Philippines too that helps people with mental health and life issues in general. Videos like yours are helping me to gain the courage to make the move and take the leap of faith. Thank you!
My story is similar, add that I was getting out of the army and didnt know what was next. I experienced much the same as you in Vn, I taught at home for a lot of years and was there during the pandemic lockdowns… my wife and I tried to make the transition to online teaching but it wasnt the same. we closed our classes and immigrated my wife to US… we are trying to make a life here in Riverside, but it’s hard. You have my support friend.

I feel ya.. been down that road the last 10yrs after my mom passed.. 10yrs later am such a happier place and now a couple months away from coming back to SGN to where I am a much happier person... VN is home now more than UK where I was born!

I'm currently in the same situation you were 7 years ago. A mid-late 20 something just dropped out of school and not knowing what the next step is. I'm glad to hear that Vietnam has given you a new outlook on life and that you were able to overcome your situation.

Hey koodo to you for opening up your situation, normally people find it’s difficult to express their downsides. Hope all that is in the past for you, we all only get to live once so just make the best of it and enjoy Vietnam brother. My plan is to move there in the near future, I’ve been living in the western world for many years and it seems to get tougher and tougher.
Thank you for sharing your story. I feel life is all about experiencing new things, seeing new things and making memories. Every time I’m in Vietnam, I do all of those things I just said but back here in the states, I go to work and go home to eat dinner and then bed just to do it all over again the next day. I am basically bored. I have family here and I have family there. My mom says I’m crazy that I want to move there, fearful of the communists there, but I keep telling her Vietnam is so different now than how it was in the past; my parents immigrated to the US because of the war. Really the only thing keeping me from actually doing it is my health. I’m currently on the kidney waiting list and then afterwards, I’ll basically have to taking meds forever how ever long the kidney lasts. I’m not on dialysis yet which is why I need another visit to Vietnam because it will probably be a long time afterwards before I’m physically strong enough to make that long flight again.
Is brave your courage to tell your story and the possibility to help someone out there that need some hope. You are not a looser, you just got lost and found your way back to life. Congratulations and I wish you a lot of happiness!

Man, this is as real as it gets. More common (what you went through) than you think. I lost everything & took a leap to VN to start over & has been great. I fit right in, like you, I'm not materialistic, I'm simple, thrifty, efficient, so VN is perfect for me too.

Trying to live up to someone else's expectations is unsustainable. Finding something you can do for a living that makes you happy is the only way, but sometimes very hard to find. I enjoy your videos, as I am not able to travel much. Like to see how others live in other parts of the world. Keep it up.

There is no shame in being truthful to yourself, and certainly no shame in admitting your failures. There are many of us who feel the need for something meaningful in our lives, and take that longing as being a defect in our characters. We then move away, but only the lucky ones manage to realise that it's only when we stop running from ourselves and begin to accept and embrace ourselves that we are able to find contentment and happiness. From personal experience.

Thank you for being transparent, VERY BRAVE, and honest...! I am not exactly where you were 7 years ago but I feel just as desperate because of the economy here in Northern California. I am a U.S. Navy Veteran and an older gentleman that may or may not be able to find another job, if I were to stay here due to age discrimination. I also don't want to be homeless like a lot of the people I see around this place. I am going to be making Thailand my home base and living the rest of my life on my VA benefits and hopefully a remote job opportunity that I am studying for. If that doesn't work out then I will have my social security as well. Let the haters hate! That is what they are supposed to do and about all they can do..! If anything I hope your video continues to help and encourage others because if you can do it so can we. P.S. It's crazy to me that, as a new subscriber, I'm watching this during a pretty dark period of my own life and am currently poised for relocation from the US to SE Asia as a full-time slow traveler with a very similar background and history of alcohol abuse. Admittedly, my motivations for relocating are mostly based on seeking cost of living/quality of life improvements, increased personal safety, and opportunities for cultural immersion, but I'd be lying if I said there's no sense of escapism and "starting anew" involved. I hope to discover a similar degree of fulfillment and happiness you've achieved and wish you the very best that life has to offer.

You are speaking the truth of so many people here in America and possibly around the globe. I felt the same way in 2020. I went to Thailand for a few months! This trip literally saved me from killing myself! At the departure from Thailand, it was the hardest day of my life! I have regretted leaving since I got in the taxi that day! Now it is 2024 and I think about Thailand and Vietnam every waking moment! I wan't to do this so bad to my heart and bones. When I returned to north Carolina, I was in very bad emotional state. It has been tthree years of working just to get by, and mental torture. I try to figure out why I just can't pull the trigger on the move! Asia is my calling! I long for adventure and traveling to new places, I think my biggest downfall is fear of being broke and homeless i 12:5912:59 n a foreign country. The other ißue is the financial issue! I've always been in sa steady job and income. I think to myself, if I 12:59 😅 12:59
It makes you feel better sharing your story that you kept inside for so long. Life isn't always a smooth path for everyone. I too experienced similar depression as you did as young age, but I later learned not to compare myself with others. Only then I became a happier person.
I felt the same way you did when my plane touched down on the Tan Son Nhat international airport runway. Relief. But it's what you said in one of your other videos that resonated with me. The one where some other car in the LA parking lot waited for you to pull out of your parking space just so they could vent out some anger at you. I will never miss the high anxiety, high anger lifestyle I left behind either.

I lived abroad for several years and I understand the feelings you have gone through. The most important thing is that I have a good connection with the locals. When I integrate with them every day and realize that they treat me no differently than the locals, I understand that I am a part of their society. There is not much difference in the way of integrating life compared to my own hometown. Vietnam is one of the countries that is safe in terms of politics and security compared to many other countries all around the world nowadays because guns are banned in Vietnam, low hazard rate. In the future, many people will come to live in Vietnam peacefully n comfortably. So enjoy your life as your design man.

Brother, we all go through difficulties and hardship in life regardless of whether someone is successful or not but the most important thing is not to give up in life and stay positive and keep moving forward and do whatever it takes to improve and find purpose and reasons to live. To me, I know your life may not be perfect, but you have a lot going for you especially your health and your loving family and your gf. I know a lot of successful and rich people are suicidal and depressed. Life is what you make of it!! Again, we all go through these difficult times. We all have problems. Stay strong!! Thank you for being honest Tyler, it’s a lot harder to talk about what you feel than it is to pretend you’re fine. That you have 7 years living in Vietnam speaks volumes about who you really are. I’m 51, I visited Vietnam for a few months in 2000. I still every Saturday go for Vietnamese food and culture at Inala Brisbane to breathe in the atmosphere so to speak! It’s my point of balance, it seems you have found yours. Thanks again for what you do.

Good video - I'm here (Hanoi) for the exact same reasons - literally could put my face on this video and the content would be exactly the same. Im sure the percentage of expats in Vietnam for the same reasons is much higher than people would expect.
Brother, this really touched me. I have had a very divergent life and always done the American thing. (Whatever that is.) I made a shitload of money in Healthcare sales and as soon as I did, I thought that I knew I was outta here. I left after 1. 5 years of Trump approaching the 2016 election. I knew I wanted to not be in the US. First I went and lived in Puerto Rico and bought a big boat with all that money. It was a mistake but also a stepping stone towards not being here. 2 years later and after hurricane Maria and losing the boat, I returned to the US and stayed for 3 1/2 weeks and knew I wasn’t finished being away. I answered an ad online for a small school hiring teachers in Myanmar. I jumped and left again. Since then and teaching in four different schools there, I met my wife to be and we left 4 months after the horrible coup there. We are back in the US but soooo look forward to returning to Myanmar when things stabilize and the people win their democracy. The US simply is not a place to be healthy.

I broke up with my girlfriend a few months ago, I've quit my soul destroying corporate job, going traveling around Bali in January 2025 before moving to Vietnam in February. I'm doing the Ninja Teacher Course in March and will be moving to HCMC to teach English and live but also to travel around Vietnam and beyond, meet new people and create a new life for myself after becoming disulusioned with life here in the UK. I had a similar situation with feeling so hopeless and falling into alcoholism. At some point I put my foot down and said no more of this, scrounged up some money to take classes and obtain certificates. Found a job in Thailand and I'm about to head over there soon!
Love it! I respect you for the fact that you did not give up and found yourself a place to help you renew. Only brave and smart people can do that. Imagine going to a whole new country to start a new chapter, only intelligent and brave people can make it. No timid person can do that even if they were desperate. I am Vietnamese living in the US. Tyler, Thank you for the honesty. I am 57 years old and have struggled through life in the USA because I bought into the false narrative we are all brainwashed into believing growing up in the states. Go to school, get a job, get on the hampster wheel and pedal as hard as you can to buy shit and attempt to keep up appearances while your soul dies. I raised 3 children and my youngest is off to college. I am getting divorced after 28 years. Substance abuse has been part of my story as a means for coping with my depression, anxiety, and hopelessness in spite of providing a comfortable life for my family. That responsibility kept me trapped for 30 years. I am now looking at leaving the US and coming to Vietnam for a new adventure and a cleansing of my soul. Buying a one way ticket. There is more to life than working like a dog at jobs you hate only to buy shit you don't need. I am excited for a new adventure and a new way of living. Thank you for always keeping it real and showing us that we have options and don't have to be slaves to the American Dream because for most of us the Ameican Dream died a long time ago and we are just limping through life in search of meaning.
I'm pretty sure there are more than a few financial analysts in NYC right now thinking man my job is so freakin unfulfilling -- tired of working 14 hour days just to get that bonus.... Something's missing...

I can't say that I'm depressed but I have been mostly unhappy with my life (I'm 52) here in the U.S. I plan on making a move overseas but the little voice in my head is telling me that maybe the problem is me. Like the saying goes "wherever you go, there you are" so I am glad to hear that it worked out for you. I am hoping the same for myself. I know I'm not crazy.

Wow...music was your job. I sang in a rock band for 8 years but it was just a fun thing that paid for itself. Also divorced after 32 years. I recently spent a month motorbiking in Vietnam, including Danang and Ho Chi Mihn. Don't forget all of the other fantastic places in Vietnam. Congratulations on the perfect plan!

#1....NOT A LOSER!!! I've been to VN 3x. once for 3 weeks, a year later for 4 weeks, and two years later for 3 months. I've never felt so alive as when I was there. I have nothing against my home country and love it in the USA but my health and vitality are 10x in VIetnam. Good for you that you are able to make the move long term.
It's just like you took my story and spoke on my behalf, the thing was you made it to Vietnam and I'm still stuck in North America, because my family didn't want to let me move to Vietnam. After highschool I suffered severe depression, and I thought about returned to Vietnam just to say goodbye to my uncles and aunts, then I would ended all. Surprisingly I discovered there's another different world and lifestyle out there that's not North America and I changed my mind, now I'm waiting for the day that I could do what you do. Thank you for sharing.
Too bad the mindset that indiscriminate throwing garbage everywhere makes Vietnam a third world slum country for generations to come.

Tyler, I felt exactly same way when I left Vietnam to U.S. I wasn't addicted to anything. I don't smoke and drink. It was extremely hard for me to live in Vietnam. I didn't have any chance for better live. I was hungry and drove bicycle to school and work. Thanks to the U.S.A. We have a lot better live in the U.S. I always appreciate the U.S.A

Those poor American losers simply cannot compete with new immigrants and talents coming from abroad. They are losers in their own country and in order to survive they have to leave it for a much poorer, much less developed country to continue their life.
I was born in Vietnam and left when I was young. I haven’t been back in the last 20 years. I wish Vietnamese treat you well because you also bring a different world and culture to the people. I hope there will be more Americans like you living in Vietnam. I didnt come back often because the Vietnam when I left was very different. But one thing i hope hasn’t changed: it’s the people’s spirit, their kindness and friendliness. You helped to make life more colourful in Vietnam and make it a more interesting place. I am sure local people learn a lot from you too.

You are living a life many people can only dream about! Don't think about what other will say or think! You seem to be happy and have found yourself. It is not about losers vs winners in life, it is about finding yourself and finding where you "fit". :) Comparing yourself to others is not a path to happiness. Happiness IME is about valuing what you have, not what you don't have. :)
This video came up in my feed randomly and it has touched me. I applaud your attempt to tell your truth and claim your truth. While I have no experience with alcoholism or even Vietnam, I’m very happy that you made that move and it provided you with a respite, an ability to start again, to be who you want to be, respect yourself, perhaps find love or even meaningful relationships. Actually, we don’t have a great deal in common except I completed my surgical residency in Los Angeles and did in fact become a doctor. I’m a 66 year old Black American doctor and married to a Filipina for 36 years(she was a nurse at the hospital, and she just couldn’t resist! Lol), and we have four daughters and two grandchildren. So we literally have very little in common except I can certainly understand those feelings of ineptitude or even imposter syndrome that we all can suffer from over the course of our lives. Keep telling your story because it matters, it matters to many, can inspire many, can motivate many, and can be the impetus for many. It will certainly happen, and honestly, it will likely be with someone you’re never likely to meet. And that is okay. Thank you for the video and I’m rooting for you in your future endeavors.

Courage is not the lack of fear, unlike what many people tend to think. Courage is looking into your fears' eyes and saying: "I see you but you won't stop me!"
As someone having gone through some similar stuff, I can tell you that what you've done (Moving to Vietnam and work there, all in order to find your life purpose) was incredibly courageous. Living takes courage, looking for your life purpose despite being battered by a system that wants you to become an unfeeling and unthinking robot takes courage.
You were and still is a brave man. Never forget it!

I guessed many have been through the same path you did, but not all could make it because nobody could understand their suffering and they have not been courageous enough to save themselves. Luckily you have stepped up to save yourself. Your personal story is quite inspirational, which is hopefully a good example for many to follow. The fact that mentioning the words "fish sauce" brought a big smile to your face, says something about Vietnam. It's said Vietnam is a land of healing the invisible wounds. Yes it truly is.

Great video and vulnerability. I'm just over 10 years sober from alcohol. I was not courageous for many years. I'm likely moving to Asia in the next 6-9 months and Vietnam looks awesome. I have a community in the Philippines too that helps people with mental health and life issues in general. Videos like yours are helping me to gain the courage to make the move and take the leap of faith. Thank you!
My story is similar, add that I was getting out of the army and didnt know what was next. I experienced much the same as you in Vn, I taught at home for a lot of years and was there during the pandemic lockdowns… my wife and I tried to make the transition to online teaching but it wasnt the same. we closed our classes and immigrated my wife to US… we are trying to make a life here in Riverside, but it’s hard. You have my support friend.

Hey koodo to you for opening up your situation, normally people find it’s difficult to express their downsides. Hope all that is in the past for you, we all only get to live once so just make the best of it and enjoy Vietnam brother. My plan is to move there in the near future, I’ve been living in the western world for many years and it seems to get tougher and tougher.
Thank you for sharing your story. I feel life is all about experiencing new things, seeing new things and making memories. Every time I’m in Vietnam, I do all of those things I just said but back here in the states, I go to work and go home to eat dinner and then bed just to do it all over again the next day. I am basically bored.
I have family here and I have family there. My mom says I’m crazy that I want to move there, fearful of the communists there, but I keep telling her Vietnam is so different now than how it was in the past; my parents immigrated to the US because of the war.
Really the only thing keeping me from actually doing it is my health. I’m currently on the kidney waiting list and then afterwards, I’ll basically have to taking meds forever how ever long the kidney lasts. I’m not on dialysis yet which is why I need another visit to Vietnam because it will probably be a long time afterwards before I’m physically strong enough to make that long flight again.

Trying to live up to someone else's expectations is unsustainable. Finding something you can do for a living that makes you happy is the only way, but sometimes very hard to find. There are many of us who feel the need for something meaningful in our lives, and take that longing as being a defect in our characters. We then move away, but only the lucky ones manage to realise that it's only when we stop running from ourselves and begin to accept and embrace ourselves that we are able to find contentment and happiness.

Thank you for being transparent, VERY BRAVE, and honest...! I am not exactly where you were 7 years ago but I feel just as desperate because of the economy here in Northern California. I am a U.S. Navy Veteran and an older gentleman that may or may not be able to find another job, if I were to stay here due to age discrimination. I also don't want to be homeless like a lot of the people I see around this place. I am going to be making Thailand my home base and living the rest of my life on my VA benefits and hopefully a remote job opportunity that I am studying for. If that doesn't work out then I will have my social security as well. Let the haters hate! That is what they are supposed to do and about all they can do..! If anything I hope your video continues to help and encourage others because if you can do it so can we. P.S. It's crazy to me that, as a new subscriber, I'm watching this during a pretty dark period of my own life and am currently poised for relocation from the US to SE Asia as a full-time slow traveler with a very similar background and history of alcohol abuse. Admittedly, my motivations for relocating are mostly based on seeking cost of living/quality of life improvements, increased personal safety, and opportunities for cultural immersion, but I'd be lying if I said there's no sense of escapism and "starting anew" involved. You are speaking the truth of so many people here in America and possibly around the globe. I felt the same way in 2020. I went to Thailand for a few months! This trip literally saved me from killing myself! At the departure from Thailand, it was the hardest day of my life! I have regretted leaving since I got in the taxi that day!
Now it is 2024 and I think about Thailand and Vietnam every waking moment! I wan't to do this so bad to my heart and bones. When I returned to north Carolina, I was in very bad emotional state. It has been tthree years of working just to get by, and mental torture. I try to figure out why I just can't pull the trigger on the move!
Asia is my calling! I long for adventure and traveling to new places, I think my biggest downfall is fear of being broke and homeless i 12:59 12:59 n a foreign country. The other ißue is the financial issue! I've always been in sa steady job and income. I think to myself, if I 12:59 😅 12:59
It makes you feel better sharing your story that you kept inside for so long. Life isn't always a smooth path for everyone. I too experienced similar depression as you did as young age, but I later learned not to compare myself with others. Only then I became a happier person.

I felt the same way you did when my plane touched down on the Tan Son Nhat international airport runway. Relief. But it's what you said in one of your other videos that resonated with me. The one where some other car in the LA parking lot waited for you to pull out of your parking space just so they could vent out some anger at you. I will never miss the high anxiety, high anger lifestyle I left behind either.

Thanks for sharing your story I feel the same way. In 2 years when I retire I’m leaving the USA for a better future. Thailand Philippines and Vietnam is on my list I will explore all 3 and make my decision.
I lived abroad for several years and I understand the feelings you have gone through. The most important thing is that I have a good connection with the locals. When I integrate with them every day and realize that they treat me no differently than the locals, I understand that I am a part of their society. There is not much difference in the way of integrating life compared to my own hometown.
Vietnam is one of the countries that is safe in terms of politics and security compared to many other countries all around the world nowadays because guns are banned in Vietnam, low hazard rate. In the future, many people will come to live in Vietnam peacefully n comfortably. So enjoy your life as your design man.

someone is successful or not but the most important thing is not to give up in
life and stay positive and keep moving forward and do whatever it takes
to improve and find purpose and reasons to live. To me, I know your life may not
be perfect, but you have a lot going for you especially your health and your loving
family and your gf. I know a lot of successful and rich people
are suicidal and depressed. Life is what you make of it!! Again, we all go through these difficult
times. We all have problems. Stay strong!! You are doing great!! Find joy in happiness in life

Thank you for being honest Tyler, it’s a lot harder to talk about what you feel than it is to pretend you’re fine. That you have 7 years living in Vietnam speaks volumes about who you really are. I’m 51, I visited Vietnam for a few months in 2000. I still every Saturday go for Vietnamese food and culture at Inala Brisbane to breathe in the atmosphere so to speak! It’s my point of balance, it seems you have found yours. Thanks again for what you do.

Good video - I'm here (Hanoi) for the exact same reasons - literally could put my face on this video and the content would be exactly the same. Im sure the percentage of expats in Vietnam for the same reasons is much higher than people would expect.
Brother, this really touched me. I have had a very divergent life and always done the American thing. (Whatever that is.) I made a shitload of money in Healthcare sales and as soon as I did, I thought that I knew I was outta here. I left after 1. 5 years of Trump approaching the 2016 election. I knew I wanted to not be in the US. First I went and lived in Puerto Rico and bought a big boat with all that money. It was a mistake but also a stepping stone towards not being here. 2 years later and after hurricane Maria and losing the boat, I returned to the US and stayed for 3 1/2 weeks and knew I wasn’t finished being away. I answered an ad online for a small school hiring teachers in Myanmar. I jumped and left again. Since then and teaching in four different schools there, I met my wife to be and we left 4 months after the horrible coup there. We are back in the US but soooo look forward to returning to Myanmar when things stabilize and the people win their democracy. The US simply is not a place to be healthy.

I resonate with a lot of your story dude.. I broke up with my girlfriend a few months ago, I've quit my soul destroying corporate job, going traveling around Bali in January 2025 before moving to Vietnam in February. I'm doing the Ninja Teacher Course in March and will be moving to HCMC to teach English and live but also to travel around Vietnam and beyond, meet new people and create a new life for myself after becoming disulusioned with life here in the UK. I had a similar situation with feeling so hopeless and falling into alcoholism. At some point I put my foot down and said no more of this, scrounged up some money to take classes and obtain certificates. Found a job in Thailand and I'm about to head over there soon!

Love it! I respect you for the fact that you did not give up and found yourself a place to help you renew. Only brave and smart people can do that. Imagine going to a whole new country to start a new chapter, only intelligent and brave people can make it. No timid person can do that even if they were desperate. I am Vietnamese living in the US.
