I just found your channel, and I love this video! As I'm currently struggling with the hues and values of shadows on a yellow and pink rose, I'm going to make this simple tool to lessen my frustration. Thank you, Becky, for showing us how you were constantly checking your values and hues and patiently adding layers to get everything right. What a refreshing change from so many YT videos that are "one stroke and done".
Thank you! I’m so glad you found it helpful! Good luck with your pink and yellow roses. If it is the roses I am thinking of, it is an adventurous project.
Thanks for sharing this. This is the best tip I've seen since 1986 for getting the values right. You made excellent points throughout and I can feel confident sending new watercolorists to you.❤
I painted some Chinese lanterns like this a few years ago, and although it turned out pretty well, it needed something I couldn’t put my finger on. This video and the idea of the value squares really helped!
You’re welcome. I have come to the place that I seldom try too hard to exactly duplicate colors. Photos can make the colors vary, and printers can make them vary even more.
Awe yes. I've been making my own hue value finder, using my scrap watercolor paper and hole punch for years. Since 2010 when I took a workshop with Susan Harrison -Tustain. It was blast! Beautiful work!
I love how you did the background it looks like light is filtering thru and softened the entire painting. I’m just starting watercolor but I’m going to try this. I found I like sketching with watercolor pencils so the lines disappear. I don’t know if I can get anywhere close to yours but I was able to sketch it pretty close which I was proud of because drawing is never a skill I thought I had. I am a self taught acrylic painter and water color is so much harder but I love it. Thanks for this from a serious newbie!!

I just discovered you channel and love how you teach. I usually shy away from videos where sections are sped up - I'd rather watch "real time" painting. Real time doesn't break the relaxation vibe of the video. And as a beginner, the repetition of what your are doing is very helpful. Could you include more real time in your videos? I look forward to viewing and painting some of your previous videos.
Thank you so much. Before I had sped up parts, I was just cutting chunks of the video out. Unfortunately people just don’t seem to watch 1-3 hour videos. I may do a live one at some point and then it would be in real time.
That's beautiful! I just found your channel, I really like how you explain your process. I like the idea of the little square to see the exact colors. That's a great idea.
This is great tool! 👍 You asked about tools we use. I use several, but one that has been helpful in studio when working from photos has been using my photo software to open an image, next create a white border or whatever base color I am painting against and then use the select color tool to grab the color in the photo and paint it onto that border. I am able to get my lightest to darkest range, but I can also change the image into black and white to look at values. I had to learn what looks like a different color is the same color that looks different because of what other color it is next to. For those needing sketch help, it can even do a line image from it to simplify the sketching process. I can also take or put my image into my amoled tablet because it gives it a warmer color screen. Really good for when I want to pick between warm or cool palettes. (I am so old school, I used to have to select if I used Fuji or Kodak gold 35mm film to get these warm or cool palettes in my photo outcomes). Times have really changed and so have immediate results!
You don’t sound old school to me. It seems you have this down to a science. Thank you. I will try to figure out how to select colors. I’m not too techy.
A lovely channel and facebook group, and a useful trick for getting values right.
