The storyline for ATLA is based on communist China’s (Fire Nation) invasion of Tibet (Air Nomads) in the 1950s.
Aang is supposed to be the Dalai Lama, who was the spiritual leader of Tibet and a Buddhist monk. Similar to Aang, the Dalai Lama is believed to be continually reincarnated.
Y'all are going to LOVE THIS!!! Pro-tip: lump together a few episodes per reaction. The show will captivate you and you'll get to some amazing storylines faster :) Plus, 3 or 4 episodes of ATLA is still shorter than most movies :)

The various bending styles in the show were based on real world martial arts. Water bending is Tai Chi, Air is Baguazhang, Fire is Northern Shaolin, and Earth is Hung Gar. There's also some special benders who use different styles based on martial arts like mantis style kung fu.

This is such a great show! I didn’t get around to watching it until it was put on Netflix in like 2020-2021. My 30-something year-old ass LOVED it! When I started feeling sick about a year ago, I watched all of it and Korra a second time. It’s so good.

OMGGGG I can’t believe y’all are doing ATLA! Just discovered y’all through HP, got super excited about hunger games too! And now this gift!! Ahhh. If you want another great show (that isn’t as long but DAMN is it good - the acting is fire, the actors are fine, the story is incredible!) you have to try the haunting of hill house. It’s only 10 episodes but it’ll change you!
I like Avatar a lot. There are themes and some parts in the show that really resonated w me and made me feel like I gained some insight.

This is really a show that you have to experience for yourself but one thing I will say is to remember that aang is just a child, all of them really. They’re all just kids and the way the react to a lot of things is the way a kid would react to something but they do hold so much maturity through the lens of good and kindness. I’m so excited for you guys!!

The animation in Avatar is still generally pretty good, though it's kind of weird watching stuff that isn't in HD these days. Though there's definitely some noticeable bits, especially in the first season, where you can see things like low framerates in panning scenery shots. 2nd and 3rd seasons, maybe due to more budget or whatever it's cleaned up a lot.
