  • This Hillman Minx broke down constantly, emptied my father’s bank account, and made him very cross. The video covers:
    • Hillman Minx Series III3B specification
    • catastrophic engine failure
    • bodged repair via a terrible mechanic
    • crazy heater that had a mind of its own
    • 1960s sales invoice (and other period documents).
Hillman Minx Series 3 revealed: the real life experiences of a man who drove one in the 1960s - briefly!

My family had 3 Rootes models in the 50/60’s . All did 100,000 miles with very little trouble .

My father had Minx in the US I believe in the 50s, though I don't know what year or model. His main issue was that the fuel line was too close to the exhaust pipe, causing vapor lock. He solved it by installing an electric fuel pump to keep it flowing. It worked but made a loud "cla clunk cla clunk cla clunk cla clunk".

Listening to your humourous account made my morning. My dad had, I think, the identical model and it was a lovely turquoise and white. In its later years, it broke down often and he would use a crank handle to restart the engine until he finally got rid of the car. Happy to see that you have your dad's paperwork from back in that day.

Fabulous video, very interesting period photos and paperwork. Also a must-see for the young (and old) considering buying their first 'classic' (overpriced) very old car.

Thank you again, nta16. I'm fortunate to have so many period documents. In fact, there's a large pile of them on my desk as we speak. All the best.

@@CarSpyTV I really think there'd be mutual benefit with a tie-in to young 'classic' car owners or those thinking about buying their first 'classic'. I don't know if you know, or know of, the likes of IDRIVEACLASSIC, HUB NUT or the Shitefest crowd, similar audience without stepping on each other's channels. Good luck anyway.

Restoring a '59 one of these at the moment. God, the rust. Two years of evenings and weekends to get it solid again. Mine is Ocean Blue and I'm guessing that's what your dad's was. Thanks for an interesting video.

Pleased to hear that you're putting one of these cars back on the road, Sean. Good luck with the rest of the project.

True motoring history, 'classics' as they really were, and could be.
