- From the end of 1959, Hillman Minx series III passenger cars of the British concern Rootes Group were imported to Czechoslovakia. For the price of 42,000 CZK, just over 500 people could buy them (the average monthly salary was then 1,300 CZK, the Škoda Octavia cost 28,500 CZK).
The surprise was not only the new brand on our market (before that, especially Fords were imported from England before), but also the modern, spacious, four-door four-seater self-supporting body of elegant shapes with a strongly rounded rear window.
Imports began with the IIIA model. The four-cylinder petrol engine with OHV distribution with a volume of 1494 cm3 had an output of 35 kW / 47 hp at 4400 rpm. The four-speed transmission was controlled by a gear lever under the steering wheel. Hydraulic drum brakes acted on wheels with tubeless tires measuring 5.60x15 "(such tires had no car in our country until then), the handbrake was placed between the driver's seat and the front door. The front independently suspended wheels were sprung by coil springs, the rear rigid axle rested on leaf springs.
The interior was dominated by a clear dashboard with all the necessary indicators and controls located in the middle (used unchanged in vehicles with left and right-hand drive). The comfortable bench seats have been upholstered in quality leatherette, as have all the door panels. The colors of the interior were matched with the two-tone body paint.
With a wheelbase of 2439 mm, the Minx IIIA had dimensions of 4131 x 1541 x 1510 mm, a weight of 1011 kg and a load capacity of 300 kg. The 32 l fuel tank was sufficient for approximately 300 km of driving (consumption ranged between 9.5-11 l / 100 km). With a maximum speed of 130 km / h, this car was one of the fastest in our country.
Two years later, the import to us was completed by the IIIC model with an engine with a volume of 1592 cm3 and an output of 42 kW / 57 hp.

I hv my farthers 1960 series 3A Minx he bought in 14 Aug 1960 from Roots agent in Sri Lanka.
But in 1975 the 2 nd gear started problems and 3 rd gear synchromesh worn out and we used it and in 1982 replaced all gear wheels except the counter wheel
Now its 2024 and its in perfect condition .
My opinion is Hillman Minx gear box is not durable as Japanese cars and the body ....inside mudguards its poorly designed and prone to corrosion .
