Hey guys, I want to apologize for the haircut bit which a few of you pointed out as being untrue. In retrospect a country mandating 28 haircuts is a pretty ridiculous claim and it's on me for not being more skeptical. I'm sorry I had a lapse in critical thinking, I will be more discerning in the future. -Nolan
not going to defend north korea at all, but isn't kind of a shitty thing to do when talking about the number of people in prisoncamps in north korea, without mentioning the fact that the us still uses prison slave labor and that we have more people in prison then soviet russia had in gulaugs at their peak, or our recidivisms problems
Regarding the Volvo situation; the Swedish government actually still sends invoices to the DPRK every 6 months, so because of accumulating interest the bill is now over 3,6 billion SEK (roughly 360 million USD). In a similar manner Kim Il Sung ordered industrial, mining and shipyard equipment, specialty tools and even saunas (and many other things). Representatives from Swedish industry held a technical exhibition in Pyongyang in 1975, and the north koreans were, allegedly, very interested in the construction and materials of all the equipment displayed, but not so much about the price. From one day to another, the swedes found that they had been victims of industrial espionage on a massive scale because overnight, everything had been disassembled and then reassembled again, but poorly.
@@shauncry1917 at least I don't think so. From what I've read this technical fair mostly displayed industrial machinery and so on. I think Volvos industrial division, Volvo BM, were there though, so the North Koreans might have made Volvo tractors, diggers, dump trucks and things like that
I'm glad these guys are finally covering North Korea's car market. I hope today someday somehow get my hands a hold of a vehicle for North Korea. And yes there will be an LS swap involved
It's sad to know this was Nolans last WheelHouse on the channel. His untimely, mysterious, and definitely not politically charged death will surely leave a hole in Donut Media
Sadly he killed himself shortly after uploading the video. He was found with 3 bullet holes in the back of his head. His family and friends couldn't make sense of it, he was such a happy and charming guy. He must have kept his real thoughts tucked away.
A few years ago, a Romanian site wrote about Romanian made Dacia 1310's still being used in DPRK. There are actual photos of them being used as either private cars or as taxis. The reason for our cars being used there is that Romania had really good relationships with the DPRK before 1989 and we sold them there as well. We still had ok relationships with them after 1989 as Romania had the last EU ambasy in DPRK that was closed in 2021 due to very strict anti-covid restrictions that did not allow the changes of some diplomats. Anyway, back to the vehicles, some say there are other Romanian vehicles there as well. Who knows. It might be true.
@@Jacizzy Well on the Wikipedia "List of diplomatic missions in North Korea", both the Polish and Romanian embassies are placed in the "Former embassies" chapter. The Romanian embassy being the last EU embassy there is an information I got from the Romanian press, so I don't know how accurate it is but apparently there's no EU embassy in DPRK anymore.
Was interesting to learn, that a whole country's car industry was at time based on a factory in your home city in Russia. GAZ means Gorky Automobile Plant, and Gorky is the name of the city currently known as Nizhny Novgorod.

The Ssangyong Chairman is actually based on the W210 e-class and uses the m102/m104 engine. Believe it or not, a lot of german/japanese car manufacturers used to give technical support/ joint ventures with several korean manufacturers (mainly because they didn’t have the necessary knowledge and technology). If you look at korean-made cars around 1970s to early 2000s, especially in the luxury segment, a lot were either built with a lot of german help (e.g., design, engines) or simply rebadged opels/mitsubishis/nissans. Additional Info: Ssangyong collaborated (basically badge engineered) with Daimler Benz for total of 3 models: Chairman, Musso and Istana. A lot of their other models also used mercedes transmission and chassis.
Here in Argentina Musso's were sold kinda well because the guy importing them decided to put a sticker on each side and the back that said "Powered by Mercedes Benz" so people bought them. Mussos are not bad at all actually.
@@phrodendekia same here in Indonesia; they even sell these on Mercedez-Benz authorized dealers! Some buyers were reportedly offered to replace the Ssangyong badge for a Mercedes badge if they wanted to. Sadly these Ssangyong's barely seen anymore. We got the Musso (with the 3.0l inline 6 benz engine), the Korando (based on a SWB G-klasse) and the rarest one is the Chairman (based on the E-class).
@@phrodendekia Used to own one. It was one of the most modern SUV at the time, designed from ground up by Mercedes, had fantastic handling both on and off road, when most SUVs didn't. It's still produced and some modern Mercedes SUVs have probably a lot in common in design.
Also British Ford made Cortina in the 60s and 70s in Korea -- which later started Hyundai (Hyundai Stellar still shares some parts of suspension and brakes with Ford Taunus/Cortina models of the 70s up to early 80s

It’s not a copy cat car, it’s absolutely legal production. bad information as always when it comes to NK. BS and propaganda! A South Korean guy have manufacturing rights to Fiats world car and he set up shop in a free trade zone to produce the car. Straight forward capitalism, nothing strange! When I was asked what industry I wanted to see in NK I proposed that factory in 2007 but I think the factory wasn’t very active at the time. About the advertisements, yes the only two billboards I found was advertising that Fiat car, one model on each. That was actually double the number of anti USA posters I found walking all over Pyongyang. Yes I walked both with my guide and alone. I had no restrictions of taking photographs and took a lot! I believe some of my Volvo car pictures will be published in a book later this year. Bye the way there is no Volvo taxis from that original batch in Pyongyang anymore, they have been sent of to other places. An acquaintance from Sweden was there studying at the Pyongyang University a few years ago, I talked to him on FaceTime while there. At the time of my 12 days in the country VW Passat was very common as car for officials, most likely made in China. NK have rare earth metals in abundance, the chances you carry a bit NK in your pocket is huge! They export everything they can produce to China for their mobile phone production. Money is coming in and they have renovated Pyongyang and build lots of new buildings the last few years. All info about NK comes from their two enemies SK and USA so you need to understand that we are talking a lot of propaganda here. If you care to know more you can always go there, not very difficult, but it has been closed during Covid.
I visited North Korea in the Autumn of 2016. During the "tour" I remember spotting a whole fleet of current model Audi A6. All Black, approx 30 cars. Deffos gov official cars.
My grandpa used to have a Gaz 24 until like 2005 I remember being driven in it. It used to be a popular car back in Armenia 🇦🇲 which used to be a part of the soviet union. I still have an 1998 Lada Niva back in Armenia.

I read some article recently about North Korean cars. Apparently a bunch of them run on firewood, and I think (though I might be mistaken) that the W201 clone was actually in production, and it was so cheaply made that the windows didn't even roll down, so they were just solid pieces of glass stuck into the doors. That I think is the sort of quirk that DeMuro would laugh about hysterically.
Funny how people accuse NK of propaganda when people are reading and belive BS stories like that, or stories of every NK force to have same hair cut, or his same uncle, his ex killed many times over, or countless other lies about NK. And people accuse NK of brainwashing, what a joke?
For those asking, yes, that is the same Unification Church whose Japanese branch drove that guy to make a homemade blunderbuss to shoot Shinzo Abe with
The fun thing about the volvo deal is that sweden sends the bill to them every half year but they still dont pay. And thanks to inflation the bill get more expensive every year.
If I might make a poster suggestion, could y’all make one with your “Evolution of” designs? That’s the series that brought me to Donut in the first place and it’d be really sick for a poster design.
what's a Canadian car? I know companies have factories in canada making them maybe a Canadian MADE car. but that's not a Canadian Car company. that's like saying Iphones are made in China, so iphones are Chinese phones.

I did not expect such a nuanced understanding of the history of North Korea from a car channel, but I’m pleasantly surprised. Great work on this, there could be a cool series that stems from this recipe (research and make videos on little known car counter cultures in 2nd/3rd world countries)

The Sangyong Chairman was not a poor copy of a Mercedes, it was fully authorised and used a stretched w124 platform with Mercedes engine, transmission, etc. it was a luxury vehicle that attempted to provide S class luxury with E class mechanicals. It had softer suspension than the Mercedes and the comfort was biased towards rear seat passenger rather than driver. How do I know this.. because I owned one. A good, reliable and extremely comfortable car that was only let down by some poor quality plastics and switches.

Loosely bases on W201? Even though they might not have reverse engineered it that was their best copy yet. Can't believe they had the balls to name it "self-reliance"😂
Tbh the Ssangyong Chairman was a solid car, it shared powertrain and chassis with the W124. Not exciting or comfy as a benzo, but it was a well built car
I've heard claims that the elusive North Korean Mercedes clone is actually just a regular Merc, modified for propaganda purposes. There's an orange one, a blue one and a red one, but they might just be the same car with a new paint job. The alleged build quality issues might be just funny internet rumors, or possibly they slapped the car together out of spare parts, but lacked window motors, a heater core, door seals and such.
Pretty much. When I visited NK we were just like 12 in the touring group. Way less when you go to the rural community. The cities suck compared to the farmlands lol
The problem is, their people are so poor, they are starving. They have no use for a car, even if they could afford one and even if it was legal to own one. The kids and populace eat bugs and frogs and whatever else they have to just to survive.

yes that right. Rev Moon has been trying to get the two Korean govts to be in speaking terms and cooperate for decades. Rev. Moon's anti-communist stance made him a high profile target for American leftist, Kim Il Sung himself, Japanese communusts and the Soviets. After much preparatiin, he finally was able to meet with both Gorbachev and Kim Il Sung and thaw tensions. Ending Communism was one of his life time goals. The Korean issue was of particular interest because it was the last bastion of Cold War unresolved and involved te major powers. And his Little Angels dance troup set the way for the wave of global k-pop. The group acted like cultural ambassadors for Korea, very much like the Kiev Orchestra Symphony right now, making their case about being a nation apart. Rev Moons "power" is simply trust he built when dealing with people who wanted him dead
As a south Korean, I do feel lucky that I was born slightly lower end of the Earth when I watch these kinda videos. Also Nolan has my regards for his Korean accents.

S N E E D bro in North Korea you’ll be murdered by the government for smuggling in fuckin foreign movies and shit or murdered by starvation. At least in the US no matter how cracked out it is u still have ur freedom and economic opportunities. Most people in North Korea would rather be murdered by a crackhead in East Oakland as a free man rather than live enslaved like animals. U can’t just say that some place is better to live in than the other just by murder rate alone.
They're not steam powered, but wood gas powered. Wood is used to produce combustible gases in a furnace which is then piped into the vehicle engine. They were used during the Great Depression & WW2 when fuel was expensive or were rationed.
Just a small mistake: the Pyeonghwa Zunma was copied off of SsangYong Chairman (not Brilliance and Shuguang), which was in turn copied off of Mercedes. Also, as a side note. It is more likely for Brilliance to copy off of BMW instead of Mercedes, because in China, all domestically manufactured BMW models are made in Brilliance factories (it's part of their joint venture).
It's so sad what the people of North Korea are subjected too. It seemed like for a time, under a certain president things were going to start potentially loosening up. (Please don't attack me I'm affiliated with neither party and neither recent president)
North Korea could’ve gone down a completely different path before Kim Il sung died. With the collapse of the Soviet Union, he was actually considering loosening restrictions and possibly reunification with South Korea. But his reckless son Jung il took over after his death in 94 and went complete ape shit and ran the country even deeper into the ground. All of this tragedy and bullshit could’ve been avoided if some people finished what they started about 70 years ago....

This is fascinating and all but learning about the DPRK just tends to make me sad... So many people living in such an awful place under such an awful regime. I know this is reality across the world (increasingly so these days, some would argue), but damn if DPRK doesn't feel like a big sick cosmic joke. So close to such an advanced and (relatively) free and prosperous population, and yet so so far. Frankly I think car ownership is a pretty good barometer for quality of life. If the average worker can still find a way to get his/her hands on a set of wheels - things can't be THAT bad. People talk about it as though it's a luxury but IMO it's really not - it boosts peoples' economic ability immensely, it means they can quickly escape oppressive regimes or dicey economic situations, it means they can visit their family a hundred miles away over a weekend and be back in time to make it to work on monday... It's a wonder of modern life that we as commoners should hold onto for dear life, and that it's denied to such a large population for such bullshit arbitrary political reasons is effing tragic.
As a Korean, hell, you didnt butcher it at all. I'm more surprised that you managed to say most of the word correctly. Those north Korean car names are somewhat a subject of amusement for rest of the Koreans as well. Far too old fashioned for us, hard AF for foreigners to pronounce. Also, that unification church? They're Moonies. That whole sunshine thingy not only proved that it didn't work, but was criticized for the involvement of Moonies for some deeply shady deals. Crazy.

If the country opens up a little bit and some economic sanctions were to be lifted, NK has the potential to be the another economic success story. It has a relatively stable government, a huge pool of cheap labor, cheap real estate, and a huge growth potential in every aspect- manufacturing, energy, telecommunications, construction, mining, IT, etc. Much like China and Vietnam, it only needs to adopt a market economy.
@@RD-io6smBetter economic opportunities is also a human right. That means jobs, food on the table, and a sense of stability for the average North Korean. You can't feed human rights to people with empty stomach.
You do realize that like Venezuela and Cuba, it isn't NK thats preventing itself from having any kind of growth right? It's NATO's blockades and sanctions. They, like Cuba, have relatively little natural resources left, and had always relied on strong trade and their location along major trade routes for their economic success. When the guys with the biggest militaries and economies in the world are all telling everyone else in the room "if you trade with them, we'll stop trading with you and/or introduce you to some 'freedom'", of course they are going to suffer, and of course a dictator will take hold.
I think one of the most important things that you skipped over Nolan, is that in some ways, the current state of North Korea is arguably the fault of the west/US/NATO. Many of their worst years in terms of industry and famine were following the Korean War, when the US and allies dropped more ordinance on the country than literally any other place on earth. Their industry and farmlands were basically irrecoverable, and large parts of the country are still uninhabitable. Now, historically, the one thing that almost always happens following major wars, political upheaval and famine, is that dictators tend to pop up and take over. And, over time, by continuing blockades, refusing to negotiate more friendly terms, massive sanctions, etc, it was only possible for the situation in DPRK to get worse. If the entire rest of the world is refusing them any kind of nicety, especially after they destroyed most of the countries infrastructure, I think it's inevitable that the dictatorship and paranoia only continues. I'd also caution against believing some of the wackier stories about the country and their leadership, as a lot of them are almost always false. The haircuts one, the one about blowing up his uncle with an AA gun, the not peeing one, etc. A lot of them are either conscious lies by propaganda outfits like the CIA, satire that doesn't translate well to westerners (a lot of this apparently), or made up out of whole cloth by the DPRK defector "industry" in SK, which pressures defectors into making up wilder and wilder stories in order to earn a living, as many of them are not allowed to hold other jobs by the SK government, and are threatened to be sent back if they toe out of line. The documentary "loyal citizens of pyongyang in seoul" shows a lot of how defectors are treated. It's a really fucked up situation overall and I do have hope that both countries can reunify in my lifetime.
Thank you. I almost couldnt finish because Nolan kept referencing the most blatant SK propaganda (Personal toilet cars? Come on). Please check the sources of any ridiculous stories you hear about North Korea. 99% are fabrications from the CIA-owned Radio Free Asia or the South Korean government and the defector industry.
Well, the North Koreans tried to take over South Korea by force, so the South along with their allies would retaliate. Even after the war, North Korea would be in a better position, as it had two friendly red giants; China & the USSR, right next door with a land border to China. South Korea on the other hand had their backs to the Yellow Sea. The fact that the South eventually prevailed socially & economically speaks the difference about the two systems...

I like to believe, that somewhere in north Korea, there's a guy kicking around in a Supra, dressed up like a "F&F" replica, smoking every other car on the road, and being like "Too much for you to afford, pal, TOYOTA!" Brrrrrrrrrrr!!!
0:38 makes me laugh when Americans trying to paint other small countries as evil by say things like "selling small arms to terror groups." When at the same time US government literly supplied talibans in Afganistan with MRAPs, rockets. Small arms, heavy machine guns, helicopters, drones and other super high tech and expensive technologies.
Huh, interesting. "Seungli" means victory. "Pobeda" means victory too, but in Russian. Kind of cool that the meaning of the name is the same. Also, Nolan, it's not pronounced "pò-be-duh," it's "pa-bè-da."
Fun fact about the Fiats North Korea chose to build/copy: The Siena was the sedan version of the Fiat Palio, a hatchback, and both were designed and built originally in Brazil in the mid 90's as a replacement for the classic, but aging, Brazilian version of the Fiat Uno (the Brazilian Uno differs quite a lot from the Italian Uno and had several improvements over the Italian/European original), but the Uno was still selling so absurdly well and the Palio also sold so absurdly well that Fiat kept both in production until the early 2010's (the Palio lasted until the late 2010's, more or less. I don't remember exactly) and only had their production interrupted due to changes in safety and emissions laws. The Fiat Doblò was also sold in Brazil, but if I am not mistaken it was the same as the Italian one, so not a Brazil-made design, but I could be wrong on that one. The Doblò wasn't a hit success in Brazil, but the Uno and Palio were and though they were made to be cheap, affordable cars, their incredible reliability, durability and fuel efficiency made them into really recommendable cars and even older used models are still worth the purchase and do resell very well and easily. Just don't get yourself into a serious crash if you are in one of them, unless you aren't afraid to die like a man. lol Jokes aside, both are really good cars, despite their simplicity. Great affordable options for getting around, especially if you are on a budget. Most companies also used them as their fleet vehicles due to their excellence in endurance, reliability and fuel efficiency (this also sparked a meme with the Uno and cemented it in a way as the "king of the roads". Look up "Roof ladder Uno", or more specifically, "Uno com escada meme", and enjoy some laughs, maybe).
Hey guys, I want to apologize for the haircut bit which a few of you pointed out as being untrue. not going to defend north korea at all, but isn't kind of a shitty thing to do when talking about the number of people in prisoncamps in north korea, without mentioning the fact that the us still uses prison slave labor and that we have more people in prison then soviet russia had in gulaugs at their peak, or our recidivisms problems

Last embassy? In Poland we have embassy of North Korea since 1948 and it is fully functioning till now, 6 people are working there probably Korean
@Eoin F What kinds of work they do?
@Eoin F Thought all of Poland?
I wonder if the Dacia Sundero will make it's way there. It would be a good car for North Korea to replicate on the cheap.

Most of the Ssangyong models had (or still have) Mercedes Diesel engines. I once told that to a MB employee. He didn´t even know that. 😁
@@phrodendekia Used to own one. It was one of the most modern SUV at the time, designed from ground up by Mercedes, had fantastic handling both on and off road, when most SUVs didn't. It's still produced and some modern Mercedes SUVs have probably a lot in common in design.

I can already imagine him sitting in the shoebox sized backseat of a North Korean car and comparing it to things like the trabant.
The firewood system makes sense since wood gas is cheap. England used that system in WWII since their fuel was so heavily rationed.
@@nubreed13 I should've pointed out that it's mostly trucks that run on firewood - in a car you'd have nowhere to put the furnace.

Tbh the Ssangyong Chairman was a solid car, it shared powertrain and chassis with the W124. Not exciting or comfy as a benzo, but it was a well built car
Yes, the video was incorrect in calling it a ripoff (knock-off?), it is truly a mercedes-benz in ssangyong clothing.
For a non Korean channel, this is a surprisingly nuanced take for a video. Congrats 👏
"Hey, we've failed miserably at making automobiles, so instead lets build hotels in a country that has no tourism!"
Pretty much. When I visited NK we were just like 12 in the touring group. Way less when you go to the rural community. The cities suck compared to the farmlands lol
I wonder if they force people to undergo medical treatments on mass scale? That would be interesting to see how they deal with all that.

S N E E D Well, living amongst North Koreans sure but not IN North Korea. If u meant living in North Korea is better than some of the “culturally diverse cities” in America, ure definitely high on some shit. Unless u mean living in North Korea like an elite, which in that case, makes sense.

Are they really steam powered ? Or wood burning "holzgas" cars and tractors ?
They're not steam powered, but wood gas powered. Wood is used to produce combustible gases in a furnace which is then piped into the vehicle engine. They were used during the Great Depression & WW2 when fuel was expensive or were rationed.
It is so hard to believe that they can't build a car when they can build missiles, a nuclear bomb

Nolan - respect for trying to pronounce these Korean words! Keep up the fabulous work you and your team is doing!

I didn't know NK made cars. They must be almost as advanced as Fred Flintstone's car.
North Korean car industry? I saw another you-tuber cover this and other countries/regions as well. Good to see more images and insigght of course.
Crazy.

Day 69 of asking for an Up to Speed on Lee Iaccoca.
Wow, did not anticipate such a clear insight into NK life and industry. Excellent video, thank you.
I don't know about you but I feel like human rights should be 1st priority over making money...
When the guys with the biggest militaries and economies in the world are all telling everyone else in the room "if you trade with them, we'll stop trading with you and/or introduce you to some 'freedom'", of course they are going to suffer, and of course a dictator will take hold.
solid info, very good coverage, congrats
We should have never stopped bombing the shit out of them. We should have pushed all the way through and put an end to their socialist government.
I’ve been dying to know about the car industry in north korea but thanks nolan for making this video

Just don't get yourself into a serious crash if you are in one of them, unless you aren't afraid to die like a man. lol
Jokes aside, both are really good cars, despite their simplicity.
Additional info: Doblo was Turkish made.
