Hi Christine. I'm in America and have sold hundreds of Microwave Bowl Cozies at my craft fairs and direct sales. My design is two sizes and the bowl shape is created with darts. The sides extend more around the bowl and offers more structure that hold up well (even through machine washing/drying.). I use only quality 100% quilters cotton, 100% (thicker) cotton batting made specifically for this purpose (with no scrim), 100% cotton thread and no metallics in the fabric. I also round the edges so either bowl size turns nicely in the microwave. There is plenty of fabric around the entire diameter of the bowl so you simply lift the bowl and cozies together from underneath and never spill or heated fingers or fingers in the bowl. I add a loop for hanging/storage. I stitch an X through the center before sewing the darts in place, topstitch around perimeter and also stitch a circle in the bottom. All the stitching keeps all the layers together and maintains the bowl shape. They are excellent and well received for hot and cold foods. I also adjust the darts and make microwave plates as well. Customers and I alike use them daily, sometimes even more than once! They make great servers for warm rolls with only a napkin in the bowl prior to the bread. I've not seen your version but they are nice for holding and storing, but I believe defeats the purpose for which they are intended here in the States. So funny, how we both feel our different opinions prove that point. LOL. I've been enjoying your videos and very grateful for your knowledge and willingness to share with the public. Happy Sewing!

Thank you Andie, and I really appreciate your comments. I think I'm a bit over cautious after stories I've heard with burns and children. Also after a near miss with one of my boys 😀

@@ChristinesHomeAffairs You're welcome. As I mentioned we have a batting made specifically for microwave use so I believe that has much to do with the final product and use. Even still, we're suggested to heat in two minute intervals.

In Canada we purchase "Wrap-N-Zap" 100% natural cotton batting, made in the USA. Says right on the package that it's microwave safe.
Great for baked potato bags too. I usually do my baked potatoes in the oven, but they're so handy when you need something quickly.

I make a slightly different one for the microwave that conforms more to the bowl. The materials also differ, cotton batting, heavy cotton thread and cotton canvas fabric. There are always going to be dangers around heating food and children, but heat penetrating the the cosy is not a problem for my quilted cosies. I'll run up a few of these though, it would be good to have a lay flat style, even if they are only for table use.

I make the other styles as well, but still don't recommend any in microwave, but then I raised 5 boys, and have seen nasty burns in others, so am extra cautious 🤪

@@ChristinesHomeAffairs I'm just recovering from nasty finger burns from a microwaved meal. No bowl cosy in sight. Microwaves are dangerous for grown arse adults, let alone children.

I am glad I found your channel, you have some very nice tips and tricks that will be very useful, thank you. Children are perfectly capable of being instructed how to properly use a microwave. If one feels a child won't listen to instruction of safety than they shouldn't allow child to use a microwave until he/she matures a little more! As you pointed out, one can get bad burns from microwaves, if not careful, at any age. In America, employees can't hire anyone under age 18 to mow, weed whack, use a meat slicer or grinder, mixer or any appliance or tool that involves power. We are raising people to believe they can't rather than that they can and it shows! It is a shame really. When my dad taught me how to mow (at age 12) he first instructed me of all the safety issues and pointed out where I could lose a hand or foot. Then he watched over me until he felt I could handle the job and that I had listened. Of course he also showed me how to clean the mower when done, check oil, try to use only enough gas to get the job done and how to winterize mower at end of season. I instructed my 6 year old granddaughter on how to sew her bedroom curtains (ten years later she still has kept them) by letting her cut the material and run the machine. I told her where to keep her hands so that the needle didn't go through her fingers. I also stayed right there watching over her at each and every step. She did a fine job! She was so proud of herself and told all of her friends she made those curtains.

Christine, you are so clear in your explanations and your videos are so easy to follow, thank you so much for taking the time to share your talents with us. I have done a bit of a mash up between the two bowl cosies. I love the rounded corners but also prefer the cosies that lay flat. We have bowls of varying shapes and sizes so rather than poppers I decided to attach some thin Velcro, it makes the cosy adjustable then. Also, I had no fusible wadding but did have some quilting wadding so I used that instead and quilted the cosies.

Why does it have to have four pointed corners? It is going under a bowl. Most bowls are round. I may make mine with rounded corners.
Janet was making bowl cosies today, when I joined her. Her's does not have any snaps; and, her's are made to go into the Microwave. However, Janet was have trouble making the darts through so many layers. The snaps does away with the need for darts; and, your cosies can be stored and washed flat.
I'm always scared of starting a fire. I do not put any of my cosies (bowl, cup, or tea pot) in any oven.
Your cosies are very nice. I love sleeping under a tin roof when it is raining. Thank you for this video.

    • @ChristinesHomeAffairs
      @ChristinesHomeAffairs  2 года назад +1

Thanks Arvetta. I never considered rounded corners for this project. I learned this method about 10 years ago, and have just stuck with it. I should really think outside the square sometimes (pun intended) 😄
I like that I can store mine flat too, and as I sew to sell, prefer to have something that goes together more quickly. I'll do a video on the pleated ones in the future so people can decide what they prefer. 😊😊

These look so interesting. I could not wait to make one. I ordered the snaps from Amazon. They are very difficult to apply, unless I'm doing something wrong. I made them with George two Christmases ago, but each one took me hours. These stitch up real fast, but then the snaps are a struggle. They look so cute, but I'm feeling disappointed. Any suggestions? I love your videos they're so interesting, and I'm looking forward to trying out you're different ideas with Christmas now around the corner.

    • @ChristinesHomeAffairs

The trick with the snaps is to make sure the pointy bit goes right through the fabric before you try to put the other side on. Then place it together by hand before using the tool. They are quite simple to do, but perhaps it's worth practicing on scrap fabric with some of the snaps 😀
