I am 67 years old & am still working in the medical profession. Graduated high school in 1974. My parents were supportive & said do whatever you would like to do. Times were definately different. I can remember several old grandma patients saying, "I don't want a female doctor" to my face. "I want to see a male doctor."...😅...At first, I was insulted but after a while we would take bets ti see what old lady grandmas would diss me or embrace me. 😅
If they were in pain & I was the only one available, they reluctantly agreed for me to treat them. Then they became my biggest fans. The old men never ever gave me a hard time. 😂

Dr. Cindy, I think it would be so hard to be so capable, work so hard and have so many interesting experiences in your career and give it up to do the most important job in the world, knowing it is not respected as the most important job in the world. I think it would be hard to have all that education and experience and have most people not know your accomplishments. Your children are so blessed to have you for their mom!! It seems like you love them more than yourself and what you want.

My nephew made a bad mistake drinking & driving. His best friend was killed instantly. A nightmare he lives w every day. The friend’s parents love my nephew & new it could have been the other way around. They supported him at his trial or it would have been a very different outcome. He was spared jail time. He lives w the decision he made that night & he’s such a good, kind, & gentle kid. So was his friend. 💔

I also felt “seen” when she talked about choosing family over career and how profoundly difficult it was on top not having the support from her mom in that decision. Very relatable. I believe the universe (God) does provide insight that a person will verbalize before they die. It’s always in retrospect family and friends remember the little things that were said/done that then make sense.
It’s comforting to realize they knew that they were going to pass on. So when that moment comes they are prepared to leave, at peace, and encompassed with love. That provides me comfort, knowing there is an energy or light guiding their spirit so they are not alone❤️

I’m in awe of you and your family’s heartbreaking losses. It takes one’s breath away of what you all have endured yet by having such an open platform for us all it helps your viewers to not feel so alone in our grief over our loved ones. One of the common experiences of all humans-loss, grief and enduring. Recently, my brother lost his wife from a brain aneurysm. Leaving 2 young men in their early 20 to mid 20s. My sister in law was found outside her workplace in the snow and us not knowing how long as the brain bled before someone found her. Marina had brain surgery but passed 4 days after. Surgeon was so upset so I can only imagine he felt. Tough to go home with that that he also knew my sister in law as a kid. This has shattered the family and we are in such disbelief and pain I pray that my brother and his sons can put one foot in front of the other. ✨

I'm really enjoying the podcast and short videos. I feel very similar to Cindy and can resonate with a lot of things she discussed. If you ever wish to do something from a patient's perspective of how to prepare to have a successful surgery, I'd be more than willing to provide my input. Tips to do ahead of time to help make recovery "easier". Thank you for sharing your knowledge - both Dr. Hoeflingers!

About your daughter writing about death before your Brian died: “On Death and Dying” (Elizabeth Kubler Ross) tells about the phenomenon that often before the death of a loved one or oneself, people talk openly about death. It happens whether they know that dying is on the way. Blessings to you all! 💙🤟🏼
Listened to both episodes of the podcasts while working on some research and 2 hrs went by so quickly! As a med student, I thank you Kevin and Drs Hoeflinger for showing us that we can achieve both our career and family dreams, and mentoring us through your stories that there'll always be light and hope even in the darkest corners. I hope I can be as insightful and empathetic as you duo when I become an attending. Would love to hear more stories!!!

Hi, fun and interesting interview, good job, In 1979 there were tons of women in medicine. I always laugh a bit when young people refer to the not so distance past as if it were primitive , computers existed too.. no internet yet, 10 years later dial up began, ask your mom what kind of a first car she had? It may be a muscle car in someone’s collection but their still on the road, we celebrated birthdays ate cake and ice cream, opened presents, had parties, some drank and smoked pot, everyone wore underwear, socks , shoes, we all tried to get 8 hours of sleep a night , went to work everyday,dated, fell in love got married, they even had barbecue potato chips and Cheetos, pizza and sushi. We who lived in the city got dropped off at the mall, went to the movies ate fake butter popcorn and giant boxes of candy. Not much has really changed, you momma is really a very young chicky , boy.. 😂
Although.I.love being a nurse and love my specialty in nursing, Neurosurgery and Neurology,. I love forensics, as.well as three of my friends also love forensics.
I always watch dateline, 48 hrs.
I have such respect for uou and your husband.
Some of friends would ask me why I love the brain.They were perplexed that after a conference I presented at, the courses afterwards were different areas of Neurology.I chose the brain cutting

Enjoyed listening to this. The only thing that I'll note is that actually women are no longer under represented in medicine. In fact, women make up almost 55% of physicians in the US. Over 80% of nurses are women as well. So if anything, males are actually under represented in medicine.

My sister committed suicide in 1987 she was 28. She hung herself in the hallway.Her husband found her when he came home from work.
