Thanks for posting this. It helped to demystify it. I've heard stories about $2k repair bills from cats being cut out of the car and stolen. So when my 2006 V70's cat started making horrible rattling noises, I braced for an eye-watering amount to replace it. Rock Auto has an aftermarket "EPA-compliant" cat for $200. The uninstall and install really are fairly easy. Living in the South (U.S.), I've never had to deal with rust and rusted fasteners and all of that headache. Happy to say same with this. The six nuts spun off easily and the rest fell into place.

i made a jig to hold the downpipe on the bench, cut the flex section out and welded in a $45 flex replacement.
also welded up some holes in the cat.
cheap replacement cats are junk, volvo cats are very high quality.

Has the ecm error code disappeared ever since? I've been having the same problem and don't know whether to change the pipe, the cat or both. My pipe is not leaking, but the car is well over 272,000 miles and I have never changed the cat converter.

@@rtfdxn WOW thank you for info... My 2004 Volvo XC70 has a P0420 code and I did oxygen sensor 3 weeks ago to no positive results, my MPG is horrible between 18mpg to 20mpg... I did the Laquer Thinner technic and also used Cataclean... Code is still there, I'll have mechanic look for leaks and if none just change Catalytic converter with one from eBay I saw for $120. for whole pipe plus cat converter or a Amazon one for $200.

Bro don't buy a new cat.. Did you use a spacer in between the o2 sensor?? It works like a charm and very cheap.. Only $5-$10 at your nearest o'reillys. The lacquer thinner method and the others definitely don't work

@@hajileserpud9539 another thing you can try before doing the spacer method is change the fuel injectors but that's also very expensive. Try the spacer and clear the code. It shouldn't come again. I haven't had my code come back in. 3 months

got the same code after changing to a sport exhaust system with a catalic converter, but this was a 2.0t v70..

Why didnt you use the old sensor..??

He used a new sensor but the old female plug. I don't know why tho and I don't know why he bought a connector kit, when soldering is faster and cheaper with some heat shrink tubes.

What was wrong with your original cat

The flex-pipe was leaking and the smell with the window down would choke you. Check engine light was on with code CM 4201 diagnosed by independent shop saying three way Catalytic Converter Efficiency Deterioration and suggesting replacement with new Converter, Oxygen and Air Fuel Mixture Ration Sensors. The Air Fuel Mixture Sensor has not been changed yet. The check engine light has come and gone a couple times, but the smell is gone.

UPDATE: Finally had a chance to take the converter for recycling and discovered the honeycomb element was completely gone. It had no value without the metals found in the element. This was the reason for the code.

@@eurodriveway1935 What state/region of N. America are you located, that the cat honeycomb element had deteriorated? Is that normal for 200k miles. We have both '02 and '07 V70s, low mileage, with exhausts starting to need attention. We are in NJ, thank you.
