'The ideas of my friend Watson, though limited, are exceedingly pertinatious.' These words, the very first sentence of this story, immediately display Greg Wagland's talents and the reasons why he is without doubt one of the best tellers of Victorian authors tales, and especially Conan Doyle. There is a stylish but serious eloquence to his manner coupled with the faintest colouring of wry humour revealing just how much he relishes the language, the stories, the characters and the history and influences of this sceptered isle and its past dominions. Alas I can only afford the Narrator Hydrator contribution! Nevertheless, three cheers and hats in the air for Greg! Surely soon to be a knight of the realm.
I came here to make a similar comment if I didn't see one... The nuance of his voice... The best Sherlock imo. (And supporting roles of course, his voice is far ranged and fantastic at it.)
It is the comments like yours that make Greg’s audiobooks even more precious! What a noble story telling master Greg is! Thank you for the deep-thinking comments!
Brilliant. I recall Holmes once telling Watson that if he penned the stories, it would serve not as a form of entertainment, but as a guide on correctly applying Holmes’ techniques. Quite true that turned out to be.
Dear Greg, I really must thank you - your readings got me through 2021, I listened to them every single night. It was a personally difficult year, on top of the pandemic and associated trauma. So a thousand thanks dear Reader!
Me too. It's not just his greatly nuanced performance of the works, but the man that resides behind the voice that is such a grounding comfort. I'm certain Greg Waglund is a treasured friend to those who are his. Take care.
Another Sherlock Holmes! This is one of my favorites and I always wondered why you had overlooked this one; it never occurred to me that it wasn't yet in the public domain. Brilliant! Thank you!
I am a lifelong Holmes fan and i have found great joy and comfort with your videos. You sounded perfect in this, as you always do, even with the character perspective change and your being sick (which no one would ever notice, even with your mentioning!). You are a complete treasure for supplying this, and i thank you immensley for your efforts!! You have made it that now i only think of your voice for both Watson AND Holmes.
Thank You Mr. Wagland! in my opinion you ARE Sherlock Holmes--and I love your Watson and Lastrade and all the other great voices you do--I think of the goose dealer in ‘Blue Carbuncle’ or the many varied voices in ‘6 Napoleons’--just wonderful. Your voice had been part of the soundtrack of my life in the last year or two. Many Thanks
Thank you very much, John. I'm delighted to hear it. Ah yes, the goose dealer -that rings a dim and distant bell - must go back and have a listen! Cheers.
I binged all of your Sherlock videos and thought that was it. Boy was I happy to see that you have some new uploads. I wish Doyle could write us a few more Sherlock stories, they're just sooooo good. Your narration is top notch. It's exactly how Holmes sounds in my head. Thank you for sharing your gift with the world.
So true. It's great hearing Wagland's 'Sherlock' speaking about Watson, as we're so used to the opposite. Really changes it up. Even moreso than when I read it myself. 🖤
@@sherlock_holmes_magpie_audio Boy this is like Christmas! Thanks so much Greg, your reading is really amazing, and has put me to sleep on many a restless night, but I'm always wide awake for a new story whenever you post one.
What a great New Year's Eve gift! I have yet to hear the story but I already love it because Dr. Watson and my favorite Detective are back! Thank you, Greg!
Not a bad way to start the New Year ... *Thank You Mr. Greg Wagland* we have a saying in the US that what ever we are dong on New Years we will do all year 🎉🎇👍👍👍👍👍🎇🎉all the best to you & yours & the commenters, listeners, here as well ... hoping 2022 will be better than the last two
Thank you so much. From ireland. Your narration was fantastic. You do a brilliant sherlock voice! These have helped me relax and fall asleep countless times
If told by Dr. Watson, we would have had a bit more drama, color and some explanation whether the soldier recovered, resumed his friendshipt and lived a normal and happy life.
These readings by Greg Wagland are very well done. I had not yet encountered some of these stories in print, and have read numerous of the Holmes adventures in print, numerous times. So it's great to find some new Holmes stories via these Magpie audio books on You Tube. Conan Doyle was a literary genius, like Shakespeare, like Dickens; and that's why we continue to read Doyle and reprint his works and make new films of them, century after century. Well done Greg Wagland and Magpie Audio.
The sheer nuance of your voice sir in the first three minutes. You capture and convey the essence of these characters very well. In fact the best narration wise. .. You bring Doyale's SH n Watson to life so well!
Thank you for a great reading of a masterful story, Greg. Only Sir Arthur could write something so surprising and touching, and to think that This was "written" by Sherlock himself!
Thanks Greg. Another wonderful reading, as we might have expected. I wish you all the best for the coming year and look forward to hearing your next reading.
Happy New Year!! 🎊 a new Holmes story 👏🏻🎉 Thank you Greg, I am so excited for this! I can’t believe it’s been 3 years since I found your channel. These recordings have been with me through a multitude of changes and now here we are the first day of 2022.
Happy New Year Mr Wagland, and thank you so very much! I have listened with great eagerness to your entire Magpie audio collection. It is always exciting when a new one is added. Pertinacious. An excellent word.

tenere - hold
In good-people talk (not evil Roman) "holding through"
Mr. Greg is in top of the public domain.!!!!! Thanks Mr. Greg or should I say Sherlock Holmes!!!!!!
