RE the actress who played Veruca, it’s my understanding that her parents weren’t available to be on set with her (at least part of the time), so Wilder & some of the other adult actors would look after her. By all accounts, I think she was a nice kid IRL.

This is Peter Ostrum's (Charlie) only acting credit. He went on to become a veterinarian. I always think it must be so trippy for actors like that who starred in huge children's classics but decided not to pursue acting full time. They play a huge part in so many childhood memories and then just peace out to take care of goats. I love it.

@@strawberrysoulforever8336 This film while a Fan Favorite was not that accurate to the original book Roald Dahl, hated the Gene Wilder film so Much, he didn't allow the property to be touched until he died.
The Johnny Depp remake was made by Tim Burton & Dahl's estate to try & make it more accurate to the book, but the fans love the Gene Wilder film & don't like the Johnny Depp film, which is why they made the Wonka movie with Timothée Chalamet a Prequel to the Gene Wilder Film.
Funnily enough Gene Wilder didn't want any prequels or sequels to his Wonka so they supposedly also waited till he died to touch the property again.

@@CAPEDCRUSADER3900 I know all those things already. My question is whether any of the misdirects were in the book. The hoax wasn't, but both movies had it. The 1971 movie actually doesn't have as many deviations as appears at first. I think testing the kids with Mr Wilkinson pretending to be Slugworth was actually a lot stronger than the original book, where the idea was just to invite five kids and then pick out the one he liked best.

I've read that the moment with the cane and limp was Gene Wilders idea. He wanted to establish, from the start, that you wouldn't know if he was being sincere or not. Peter Ostrum (Charlie) left acting after this and is now a veterinarian. He has come to embrace the role and does appearances from time to time with other cast members.

One of my favorite details in this whole movie, but so small and easy to miss.
The Golden Ticket... was in the Wonka Bar he bought _for his Grandpa Joe._
Not the one he bought for himself. The one he bought because he was being thoughtful and _thinking about someone else._ The Wonka Bar he bought just for the sake of having someone he loved enjoy a Wonka Bar, because he thought the contest was over.
Charlie got his ticket fairly and squarely, as a direct reward for being the kind, thoughtful child he is, not because he wanted it, but because he _deserved_ it.
It's part of what sets Charlie apart from the others.

This is based on the book by Roald Dahl “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”. He was a wonderful children’s author who wrote great stories that were made for children but also had very adult concepts and life lessons. Dahl actually did not like this movie. Specifically the choice to cast Gene Wilder, whom he thought was miscast and came off as pretentious. He also had issues with the musical numbers.

Yet, underneath that there is a darkness a malevolence. Wonka is a wordsmith, he is very direct in not answering what he does not wish to, and knows exactly what he is doing. Yet there is a sheen of creativity and artist to Wonka. There are interesting questions and undercurrents that are not spelled out for the viewer. They have to figure it out on their own. Can Wonka be trusted? He's not what he seems. On the one hand he's amiable and built this empire, yet he is a recluse. I loved that bit with the cane and the summersault (Wilder's own idea). It's a distinct morality tale with the golden ticket kids demonstrating the seven deadly sins. They pay the price for them. When many were little, this movie scared the hell out of them. With good reason.

The best part of Wilders performance is yes he has the fantastical, wonderful side of him but its mostly given to us from other characters perceptions of him. Wilder gives a performance of a man with a darker edgier side to him an air of mystery that can be unnerving. I can't say for sure they won't touch on this in Chalamets version but a more psychological look at the darker parts of the character I feel Wilder hints at here would be cool. Sorry for the essay 😅

    1. I first saw it when I was 10.
    2. Roald Dahl the book author was a well known LSD user. (you can see why)
He didn't like this adaptation, so we were cursed with "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory".
    3. The Umpa Lumpas told the reverent portion of the story. Anything beyond that would have been unnecessary and overkill
    4. I suspect Wonka knew which children would win the tickets (lessons for our behalf) because Slugworth/Mr. Wilkinson was at the scene almost immediately.
    5. Many people (especially women) seem to get a creepy feeling from Gene Wilder's Willy Wonka.
    6. This is the only roll Peter Ostrum/Charlie. He's now an Veterinarian.
    7. After reading the script, Gene Wilder said he would take the role of Willy Wonka under one condition: that he would be allowed to limp, then suddenly somersault in the scene when he first meets the children. When director Mel Stuart asked why, Wilder replied
that having Wonka do this meant that "from that time on, no one will know if things are real or not." Stuart asked, "If I say no, you won't do the picture?" and Wilder said, "I'm afraid that's the truth."
    8. If you look carefully, you can see the little girl in the candy shop get wacked on the chin when the candy man opens the flip up counter.
    9. Fun fact: Veruca/Julie Dawn Cole didn't have any adult with her when they went to Germany to film the movie so Gene Wilder himself stepped in to make sure she was taken care of.😎
    10. You can get away with anything in a musical.

My favorite part of this movie is how much the rest of the cast didn't know what was going on. The scene where Wonka leaves the factory, Gene Wilder insisted on the cane, the limp, the summersault. So that the other's would never know if he was lying or telling the truth. Then, in the Tunnel, Gene was the only one who knew what was going to happen. This movie will always be one of my top 10 films from childhood. The thought put into everything, from the cinematography to the little things like above. It's seriously a work of genius.
Also, that tunnel scene goes strongly under things that induced nightmares in me while I was a child. Right up there with Dumbo and Pink Elephants.

The OG classic!!!!! This made me want a wonka bar for the longest and Toys R Us had them for a short time.
    Favorite Chocolate Bar: Crunch
    Fun facts:
    • The opening credits sequence was filmed at a Toblerone chocolate factory in Switzerland. In 2014, this movie was added to the National Film Registry by the United States Library of Congress.
    • The chocolate river was made from 150,000 gallons of water, real chocolate, and cream. The filmmakers had to change the formula for the chocolate river because, originally, the concoction they were using turned blood red. Because of the cream, the mixture began to spoil, and by the end of filming, it smelled terrible. Michael Bollner, who played Augustus Gloop, later described it as "dirty, stinky water."
    • The scene in which Veruca was running around the egg room was done in thirty-nine takes: everything had to be stacked and reset.
    • In the DVD commentary, Peter Ostrum mentions that toward the end of the shoot (with him being the only kid left), he and Gene Wilder often ate lunch together. Fittingly, they finished those lunches by sharing a chocolate bar for dessert as they walked back to the set.
    • Ernst Ziegler, who played Grandpa George, was nearly blind (from poison gas in World War I), so he was instructed to look for a red light to guide him when his character was meant to be looking in a specific direction.
    • After reading the script, Gene Wilder said he would take the role of Willy Wonka under one condition: that he would be allowed to limp and then suddenly somersault in the scene when he first meets the children. When director Mel Stuart asked why, Wilder replied that having Wonka do this meant that "from that time on, no one will know if I'm lying or telling the truth." Stuart asked, "If I say no, you won't do the picture?" Wilder said, "I'm afraid that's the truth."
    • The song Wonka sings on the boat ride ("There's no earthly way of knowing... ") are the only song lyrics taken directly from Roald Dahl's book. All other songs were written specifically for the film.
    • The Oompa Loompas were known for hard partying off-set, even travelling in a limo together to bars.
    • Denise Nickerson - who played Violet Beauregarde - didn't want to do the nose-picking bit; she had a crush on Peter Ostrum - who played Charlie Bucket - and didn't want to embarrass herself.
    • This is the only film role of Peter Ostrum, who played Charlie Bucket. Ostrum turned down David L. Wolper's offer for a three-movie contract because he wanted to keep his options open. After feeling underwhelmed at the premiere, he bought a horse, which led to him becoming a veterinarian. Ostrum only tried to return to acting once, when he auditioned to play Alan Strang after Peter Firth left the Broadway production of "Equus" in 1975. As of 2013, Julie Dawn Cole - who played Veruca Salt - is the only one of the child actors who was still acting.
    • During the "Wonka Wash" car scene, the foam used to spurt out was compiled from basic fire extinguishers, but what was unknown to the cast and crew was that the foam itself was a potent skin irritant, so after shooting the scene, the actors and actresses were left in considerable discomfort when their skin puffed up and required several days to receive medical treatment and recovery.
•Gene Wilder's Wonka costume sold for almost $74,000 in 2012.

I love what you said about Charlie and Grandpa Joe and the Fizzy Lifting Drink. I never really liked that sequence because it’s not in the book and shows a not-so-nice side of the two. But, you pointed out what it serves in the overall movie plot-it puts Charlie back into the story instead of just being an observer to the other kids’ antics. It also gives Wonka the reward on to test him at the end.

    • @Wanttowrite
      @Wanttowrite 8 месяцев назад +3

It really shows that Charlie's biggest flaw is his blind trust to his family. He knew he should've said no to Grandpa Joe, but he didn't, so then it almost cost him the contest. When Grandpa presents him with a way to get revenge on Wonka, Charlie instead chooses not to steal from someone who wronged him and is rewarded for it.
As shown with the other kids, their relative didn't stop their worst characteristics and are probably the main cause for them. Only
Charlie grew beyond his bad influence.

Trivia about Michael Bollner (Augustus Gloop):
    1. He didn't have a dressing room at the studio. Instead he would change at his house, which was conveniently nearby, and walk to the studio for filming.
    2. He didn't speak English very well, as German was his native and only language. Some of the crew members would have to coach him on his lines.

I think the movie was smart in not stating when and where it takes place. There's a mix of accents among the citizens of the town where Charlie lives, and the aerial shots make the town look European rather than American. Also the time frame seems contemporary (1971) one moment and then somewhat early 20th century in other places. It gives the movie a timeless feeling that holds up over 50 years later. Peter Ostrum is a veterinarian and raised two kids with his wife in Glenfield, NY (upstate). He's 66... putting him on the cusp of his senior years!
