One of the most underappreciated movie of 2023 ngl. This movie is so fun and whimsical. The songs are great, and Timothée Chalamet does a great job of making the role his own.

@@ThatSamoanGuy My opinion. Maybe Wonka was under appreciated
because Wonka is a musical and people don’t like musicals or didn’t want to see another Willy Wonka film. I don’t think many people were aware Wonka is an origin story of a young Willy Wonka.
What a magical, beautiful, happy optimistic film
      Timothee Chalamet was amazing. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

This is the first movie I’ve seen with Timmothy Chálame and I honestly love how overly whimsical he is in this, and he does the emotional parts well too while keeping that ‘whimsical character’ mask on. A solid first impression for me lol
Btw my favorite thing about this movie is the ‘chocolate cartel’ names were the names of companies who sent in spies to get Wonka’s secret recipes in the Tim Burton movie so there was references to both movies💕

I was pleasantly surprised by the performances in this. I knew nothing about it, but my mum had a very expensive movie experience gifted to her and my dad for their wedding anniversary, that my dad refused to use, so she took me instead. We saw this and I really enjoyed it. Timothée Chalamet was very good, and Calah Lane is fantastic as Noodle.

I saw this in the theater and I too went into it with some trepidation. When the movie starts I heard the opening notes/bells that mimic the same notes we hear when they enter the chocolate room in the original Wonka I was hit with a wave of nostalgia. I didn’t mind most of the callbacks/easter eggs such as scratch that, reverse it and such. I have heard Chalamet say that the intention is to have this be part of the same universe as Wilders and that a sequel is planned and we will see him become somewhat jaded as that one goes on. We shall see if it plays out.

I watched it for the first time last night and I thought it was just some wholesome, good movie that had some laugh-out-loud moments, and some sweet moments (no pun intended). Never watched anything of TC's before but I'm a fan now.
I did think it was clever in the tie-ins to the og. I could see how Noodle would likely be his chosen successor, but if something happened to her, which caused him to shut down the factory to re-think his plan, Noodle's expression, 'the greedy beat the needy' could easily have influenced many of the things he did in the og. That's just my take from one watch though.

That's a good thing. He needs to put his own fingerprints on the character as an actor, not be a copycat. He can borrow tropes, sure, and he has because he was clearly asked to (not that I'm complaining, as Gene's is the definitive Wonka), but he holds his own.

I agree with Stella, this is absolutely NOT in canon with the og movie. This world seems really fantastical and surreal and whimsical, but in the og movie, the world still functioned realistically. It was Wonka's factory where all the magic happened, thats part of what made it special. Not to mention, all the characters in the original reacted to the weirdness of the factory like you'd expect they would, so it doesn't make sense that this movie's world is so ridiculous and outlandish. Being weird and zany is supposed to be WONKA'S defining character trait, not the entire town's.
