Willie Wonka reminds me of old German children’s stories. They’re super terrifying with just enough to keep them entertained as a way to brutally convey important life lessons on not being a little PoS.
The whole movie is an allegory of Dante's Inferno. Charlie is Dante, Wonka is Virgil, the other children are representations of the deadly sins, gluttony, envy, etc., the Oompa Lumpas sing about what happens when you live a life of sin, and the boat ride is the journey down the river Styx. I highly suggest reading it, then rewatching the movie to see how it all lines up.
I always thought it was weird how at the beginning of the movie the candyman gives candy for free. But when Charlie buys candy he at first forgets to pay and the Candyman clears his throat like you forgot to pay.
Omg so a lot of people don’t know this, but back in the 60s & 70s (this movie was made in ‘71) a lot of stores had a monthly tab, where you would pay a certain amount each month and be able to get all the stuff you want up to that amount. If you ran out, you either had to pay on the spot or you could put more money into your tab. That’s why all the kids were getting the candy for “free.” It wasn’t actually free, their parents set up a tab so their kids could get candy after school. Hope that clears things up.

Speaking of movies I was shown as a child that I really shouldn't have been, can you please do a Pitch Meeting for Who Framed Rodger Rabbit? Please please please!
The boat ride was legitimately terrifying for the actors and actresses. They intentionally weren't told what was going to happen so their reactions would be more authentic. The projected images scared them, and Wonka's little song was ad-libbed by Gene Wilder. At least one of the actors thought Wilder had actually lost his mind, and was terrified at what was going to happen. Some of the fear and confusion you see during that scene was real.

We had the VHS tape and even though I watched the movie a lot, I also would fast forward that song.
I thought I was the only one.
I used to refer to the song as, "Upchuck, Charlie".
Given my preference for angsty girl ballad in a musical, no way do I ever fast forward. The only thing I don't like in that song is the mention of Grandpa Joe
I'm with you, Dominic. I hate that song and STILL fast forward through it. It doesn't belong in the movie. I think the director owed her some money and her Dad was in the mafia so he had to either let her sing or get his legs broken. Personally, I would have let them break my legs.
