    Revisiting this after watching StickHits' remaster of the Signals tour performance, and seeing the techniques up close here makes me wonder how Geddy (or any of the guys for that matter) was ever able to play that fast on that tour...Must've had a proper amount of caffeine ready to go! I'm excited to try and dive into some deeper cuts myself, recently acquired some Tom Brantley pickups after giving in to the hype. I'd say they made a heck of a first impression! 🤣

    KUDOS to the performance - But DUDE - I am sorry some might like the BASS TONE but it is simply too harsh. There is not enough BODY in that tone - It takes up the same space as the guitar - other than that - HOLY SHIT AMAZEBALLS...

    • @hemibass
      @hemibass  Год назад

      Thanks! It's strange there is actually a lot more 'bass' to the tone on my headphones but something happens when you upload it to RUclips and the audio gets a little thinner on the video. Generally I lean towards a more top end heavy sound anyway (like geddys different stages era tones) but there is a bit more bass to my sound than ends up on my videos haha

  • @chrisarnold2260

    Hemibass - Do you have the action set high on your bass? If I play that hard I get all kinds of buzzing. Wondering if raising that action would resolve some of that issue. Fantastic playing. Sounds like Geddy to me!

    Interesting, i would not have pictured this bassline as being so complicated but i def now realize it is watching you play it. Are there any other songs with surprisingly/deceptively difficult basslines like this one?

    • @hemibass
      @hemibass  Год назад

      Thanks for watching! There are loads of Rush songs with tricky bits in the bass parts. I think The Big Money is always a hard one, The Analog Kid is pretty fast, Where's my Thing has some cool bass bits. Most of Geddy's playing is very interesting when you listen to it closely in my opinion. Even the 'simple' stuff has his stylistic stamp on it

    Amazing playing and tone! This is definitely one of the hardest Rush songs to play, I have tried several times over the years to play it and always give up. Im always getting better though so one day i know ill get it.
    Roughly what are tour Sansamp settings? My problem with getting Geddy tone is it always sounds harsh and noisy in the "bedroom" and then trying to reconcile that with how it is supposed to sit in the mix.

    • @hemibass
      @hemibass  Год назад

      Thanks! Yeah it's always hit or miss with some of those fills. They are pretty fast!

    Awesome job, dude. I dig the improv at the end! And thanks to Ian for the guitar bits! I have never learned how to play this song on guitar partly because that solo is so off-the-wall, one of Alex's more unique solos, that I couldn't even guess at what is going on during it.
    When I was 20 (I think), I bought my first bass (a Mexican Fender J, which I still own, though it has been very modified since), and as I recall, this song was one of the first handful of songs I learned how to play on it. I spent something like 18 hours straight one Saturday breaking down and learning how to play "Digital Man" all the way through, by ear. (This was before RUclips and the advantage of watching folks like yourself do it first!) I don't know that I've ever been more determined about anything in my life, and it paid off in the end. But god, that was a long day! Felt like climbing the Mount Everest of rock bass lines. How Geddy could play this and sing at the same time, I still have no idea. This and "Turn the Page" I still think of in terms of awe as far as playing them live goes.

    • @hemibass
      @hemibass  Год назад +1

      I have exactly the same sort of memories learning this song in my bedroom haha. I would have never been able to work out any of it without RUclips etc.. Kudos to you guys playing Geddys parts before video playthroughs were available to watch! (And ofc no live versions of this song until Snakes And Arrows tour DVD...) Thanks for watching

  • @garretsimpson2112
    @garretsimpson2112 Год назад +2

    Nailed it as per usual! One of my favourites on Signals and always thought this had to be Geddy's most difficult/ intricate bass part. Interestingly enough, the bit of improv you were doing near the end reminds me of a lot of The Anarchist from CWA.

    • @hemibass
      @hemibass  Год назад

      Thanks. It's definitely one of the hardest ones. I kind of based the outro on the Snakes And Arrows live version bass bits he does at the end. I really like that live version but just think the tempo is a bit slow in the first half compared to the album version

    • @garretsimpson2112
      @garretsimpson2112 Год назад +1
