Rush - Limbo bass cover

- Decided to do something a little different for this next cover. This is a lesser known but personal favourite song of mine with a really cool bass part. I rate it as the 3rd best Rush instrumental behind YYZ and La Villa Strangiato. Test for Echo is not considered one of Rush's best albums but it's been my favourite post Hold Your Fire Rush album since I can remember mainly because of this song. I would have loved to see it live but sadly it was never played again after the Test for Echo tour.
I think the live versions from the Test For Echo tour are the best versions of the song and they are slightly faster than the studio version. My friend was able to send me the studio recording with a lot of the bass removed so I sped it up a little bit to get closer to the live versions and recorded my bass over the top of that. I think this song leaves a lot of space for playing around with different fills and I don't ever play the same way twice, but I have a collection of my favourite fills from the studio version and a few live versions as well as some of my own that I mix and match.
Enjoy!
Played on Fender Geddy Lee jazz bass with a Tech-21 YYZ pedal.
Amazing cover! Spot on tone and finger use. Been wanting to see a good cover of this song for a while and you did it the justice it deserves. Great work!
Thank you! Glad there are other people out there who also really like this song :)
Damn. Amazing job!! Just amazing. Been a Rush fan my whole life and your playing is just brilliant. The sound is killer. Your technique is phenomenal. I’ve watched countless hours of Rush as I’m sure everyone here has, and brother, you got it down. Please keep them coming. You’re channel is gonna take off for sure. DON’T STOP THE ROCK!
Thanks. I will keep posting them as long as people keep enjoying them :) Glad you liked it
This is awesome!!!! In most videos they never show Geddys playing up close for very long and I always wanna see how he does it. This is GREAT! And you play with your right hand just how he does! Excellent! Ty very much....subbed 👍
Thanks for watching! This is one of my favourite Geddy flamenco basslines. So much fun to play! Thx for watching
Fantastic performance! Spot on, Geddy would be proud.
This makes me appreciate the genius of the composition even more. All three of them are/were unbelievably talented.
Thanks! Yeah they really were. I doubt we will get another band as good as them... glad you liked my cover
Amazing!
Thanks so much!!
Great performance. The part at .35 seconds always reminds me of Yes. You rocked it out as usual.I hope to see "Malignant Narcissism " someday down the road. Thanks from you fan here in Seattle.
I would love to do Malignant Narcissism but I think it would have to be on a fretless, which I don't currently own. Maybe one day I will think about getting one just for that reason :D
Excellent!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Stylized and remarkably true to the author, very entertaining, bravo!🙏🏻
@@TriumInfinitum thanks! Glad you enjoyed it
Great choice, man do I love Time and Motion from this album!
I like that song too. It's been on my 'to-do list' for a while, but never actually learned it all the way through. I'll get around to it eventually :D Thanks for watching
I love the atmospheric feel of this whole album.
It's an excellent album in my opinion. Easily my favourite 90's and onwards Rush album. Geddy's bass tone and playing on this album/tour was perfect. Thanks for watching I'll definitely do some more Test For Echo stuff in the future!
Fantastic, Very well Done. I was just listening to this record this morning and said to myself I gotta see if someone did this one. so glad to have found your site, I'm still working on getting that One finger Geddy style down, it's tricky. Oh by the way which Model is the Geddy Bass MIJ, or MIM I have the Japan one from early 2000's but was thinking on getting the MIM, hoping the neck would be a bit more stable, what are your thoughts.
Thanks! This is honestly one of my favourite Rush basslines. I think it's a very under rated song. Mine is a mid 2000s MIJ, so I can't really comment on the MIM version. I have been lucky with mine in that I haven't had any neck problems, but I have read a lot of people who have. I think the MIM models have a slightly thicker neck, so maybe they are less problematic but I haven't had experience either way myself. Thanks for watching and glad you are enjoying my covers
Awesome cover bro say hello to your new subscriber
Thanks for watching! Hello and glad you like my channel :) Got lots more covers coming soon (would like to do an updated version of Limbo sometime too!)
Ahh you are amazing!! I am about to embark on my journey to cover limbo, you are super inspiring!
Thanks so much :) I love this song! The middle bit is one of my favourite Rush sections of music. The live version footage is great for seeing what Geddy does if you can't work it out from the album version. Good luck!
@@hemibass thanks man! I’ll report back in a couple months 😆
@@hemibass I did it 😆
@@beescheese9716 nice! Still one of my favourites to play haha
SO GOOD. Are you using the flamenco technique? I’m a new bassist and huge Rush fan, hope I can play this well someday.
Thanks that's really nice of you to say! Yes I am it's a fun technique I use it as much as I can when playing rush stuff. Thanks for watching
Rush was my inspiration to start playing guitar and has been for many years now. Spot on bass lines, I'm still working on the harmonics portion of this one on the guitar, not to mention chasing down Alex's tone. (It's a tough one to get without breaking the bank) Great job on this, sounds fantastic, and like you this is one of my favorite instrumentals by the Trinity. Perfect flamico technique, keep up the great work and keep on loving what you're doing.
Thanks for watching! I absolutely love Alex's guitar stuff on this track. The middle section (after Transylvania twist) with the guitar and bass moving up and down their runs in and out of sync is one of my favourite bits of rush music. Glad you liked my video:)
Amazing, I wanted to see somebody cover my favorite Rush instrumental from "Test for Echo" & I think you did spectacular 😎🎸🎶😎
Thanks for watching that's lovely to hear! It's one of my favourites too
I feel like this album is dismissed by so many people because you really have to be a musician (or especially a bass player) to appreciate it. Inversely I can't stand almost all of Roll The Bones but a lot of people love it. The later live versions of a lot of the songs kick ass though.
Totally with you on that point. I think roll the bones is one of my least favourite rush albums and test for echo is one I listen to all the time. So much great bass playing to get stuck into on the album and especially the live versions like you said. Thanks for watching my video
You also play the same finger style way as Geddy Lee
Thanks for watching. He is my favourite player so I have always tried to copy his style
How about a finger on your right hand work? 😊 Excellent flamenco technique.
Haha thanks for watching! I love the flamenco stuff. Will get around to doing a video about it eventually...
@@hemibass awesome!
Not too bad...😉
@mastercraft5798 thanks for watching :)
AWESOME !!!!!
Thanks! :D
I got that exact same shirt!
R40 was great! Wish I could go back and see it again haha
Amazing cover! You should do Leave that thing alone by Rush next👍
Thanks! Yep it's on my list. Going to do animate first from counterparts but leave that thing alone will be the 2nd one from that album I do. Thanks for watching
Amazing!
Thanks!
That’s an awesome cover, I always loved hearing back and forth technique with bass. it really changes the rhythm of the sound. Your bass covers is so talented that I listen to this everyday. Keep up this amazing work mate, and what great way to entertain someone!
Thanks for the comment. Really appreciated. Glad you are enjoying my videos!
F A B U L O U S ! Can’t say any other words… 👏👏👏
Thanks :)
💗💗💗
Thanks :)
🤘
Thanks :)
😎🤘 absolutely killed it....
Thanks! One of my favourite songs :)
@@hemibass I just shared your video to like 6 other people of mine on Facebook, and I watched this 2 times.. I love you're playing, you have the geddy plucking technique down it looks like.
@@lensmccracken3678 haha thanks I appreciate it. I have tried my best to get something similar to geddys technique with it. Glad you think I've got close
Can I request the Necromancer?
Funny you should say that. It was next on my list before I did freewill! Planning on a couple of others first now but necromancer will be soon definitely. I love the song
He just did it! ruclips.net/video/cF7x3Wx6o34/видео.html
Awesome...If your cover band is as good as you, I'd love to see it!!
Thanks. I'm trying to work this one into our set xD. We are going to do some recording in a practice to advertise for a singer so hopefully will have some footage soon that you can see!
Hemi, I've listened to this song at least 50 to 100 times...no kidding. You impressed the dad-gumm hell outta me, plus your personal add ins...no mistakes made. Damn guy. Ending, flawless. Your punchy-pop string attack is the exact way I used to play. Hard to find bassists that can do it lime us. It's badass sounding. I used to listen to Stanley Clarke do it sometimes.
Thanks. This is one of my favourite Rush songs. I'll do a better recording of it at some point with a few different angles etc
Have you done a tutorial on your right hand technique? Looks and sounds exactly like Geddy's technique so I would really appericate if you'd do a video explaining the technique.
Its not something I've thought about doing really but if people would be interested maybe I could do a video on it. It would be pushing the limits of my video making skills though :)
@@hemibass I guess many people want to see it since your technique is spot on ;)
@@epeli4585 Haha thanks that's nice of you to say. Ill think about how I could do a video on it
@@hemibass Sounds good! By the way, I randomly found your channel through youtube recommendations and I have to say that your covers are very nice to watch! Keep up the good work bud!
@@epeli4585 Thanks for watching I'm glad you enjoyed them!
Great job as always mate!
Thanks man. Happy New year too
Proper sick
Thanks for watching
Sounds really killer man!
Thanks James!
Slappin dat bass man!!
Haha in honour of the holy trinity!
I don't even have words to say how good of a cover this is, as a Rush fan for 30 years. This is really really, spot on in sound and technique (once Geddy went to the back & forth style). I hope you make tons of videos because this is great stuff! Not many folks out there able to pull this off.
Wow thanks for the comment! I learned to play by trying to copy geddy so it's nice to hear when people like my style. I've got another 60ish or so rush songs in my repertoire so plenty more videos coming:)
