    I’m Still driving my 2001 Avalon. It has almost 385,000 miles on it and still runs great. Original engine and transmission.

      They didn’t build them with a bunch of plastic parts like they do now . Even Toyotas aren’t that great compared to the 90”s early 2000”s

      @@Piznick64 you’re correct, but if you rinse the salt off every week go through the car wash during wintertime it will rust WAYY less. I know lots of people that have done that, with success

      @@Piznick64 They shouldn't have though, and by 2000 most vehicles were properly rust proofed. This one clearly was not proofed well or correctly. Rusted out control arms and suspension parts? Yikes.

      I have a 2002 and this has been the easiest car I’ve ever owned. I’ve never had a problem. Changed the timing belt. It’s so comfortable, and you can afford to shampoo the seats if you need to, I do. I can also afford off-road tires for looks. It’s also really fun and quick! (Not fast) go find an old Toyota they are great.

    We have a 2012 Highlander and we recently sold our other 2004 Highlander. I actually liked how the 2004 drove better than our ‘12. It handled better.

    My boyfriend’s personal favorite is the Toyota Sienna. He owns a 2010 model.
    His mom however owns a 2006 Highlander, and even with nearly 300,000 miles it’s still going strong for her 👍

      My last accord had like 370k when it got rearended,ra like new. my 5 spd 07 civic has almost 300k and runs like new. I'll never see why some people only like toyota.

      And, my fords have all gone well over 200k, and ran like new when they were sold, and never had a major issue. Mine, my familys and friends..all were exellent.

    I found a 2006 Toyota Highlighter hybrid that my mom’s friend ended up buying for $9k. 2nd owner. Towing package. Seats 7. All maintenance records, 115k mi. Leather, power options sunroof. Timing belt, windshield replaced. She got it for $9k. While we test drove it for 10 minutes 4 other people wanted it so we locked in the deal. She’s had it for a week and loving it!

      The all-new, 2024 Grand Highlander Hybrid MAX will also be the best vehicle, because it will have the 2.4 L turbocharged four-cylinder engine, which produces 362 horsepower and the six-speed automatic transmission. This will be numerous times better than the older regular Highlander's, as well as the GMC Acadia and the newer Dodge Durango's. Thanks.

      @@FarradMuseumofTruth Not that bad, because the GMC Acadia handles slightly better than the Toyota 4Runner. My opinion for an SUV is the first-generation, early-to-mid-2010's Nissan Armada.

    If you're keeping the vehicle a long time, snow tires don't really cost you any significant $$ because they make your summer/all-season tires last that much longer.

    I have a 2008 Honda Ridgeline that has over 469k miles with all the original parts. It still runs but it's close to its end. Love that truck and would get another 2008 when it's time.

    Of course it works, it's a Toyota! Love that saying from Scotty. He has changed my mind about Toyota and Lexus vehicles over these past three years of watching his videos. All other cars are crap; especially American Manufacturers and over engineered and over priced German cars. Now my wife's 2019 XC-40 Volvo T5 momentum is bullet proof and I take extremely good care to have it serviced every six-months regardless of mileage by my Independent Volvo only mechanic. And, he has been in business since 1982. My new 2023 Lexus ES300h Ultra Luxury replaced my 2014 Mercedes ML350 BlueTec. I love this car and am getting 43+ MPG on regular gas. LOL 🤔

      You should be getting even better gas mileage for a ES300h. Is the 43mpg a mix of city and highway or mainly one or the other? I ask because I have a hybrid sedan as well and I am averaging 55-60mpg. Even got it up to 84mpg once. (although I was driving on EV mode only as much as possible to see how high I could get)

    I used to have a 2008 Highlander with same equipment (Limited) that I bought new. I passed it down to my son after about 13 years. Never had a major problem other than routine maintenance. We loved that wagon. The timing belt went after 120k but it didn't kill the engine...we just replaced it. It _did_ start leaking some oil when we sold it after about 150k. But some days I wish I had that car again. Now I drive a 2016 Impala LTZ that I affectionately call "the SUV of sedans". Better than my Cadillac CTS Wagon.

      HenryHoolingtom, I recently bought a ‘15 Toyota Venza with 100K miles for $14K…sounds like a lot, but 3 months before, that price was $18K. It sat on the lot for 3 months, didn’t sell, so the price kept coming down (just like Scotty said it would - I was monitoring CarGurus during that time)

      @@carlovanrijk4039 It still baffles my mind those original Venza's never really caught on with the public. It was essentially the same idea of a Ford Edge and Ford sold a ton of them. Essentially a raised Camry with AWD ability. Makes for a good used buy today however.

      That's why I don't have one. 200k miles and they still want close to $20k for it where I live. I can buy 2 Fords for the same price.

      @@northdakotaham1752 It gets to a point where it simply isn't worth it to pay much more for a Toyota or Honda. They still have their problems, too, like every vehicle. Eventually they all will die. Some people act like every Toyota is going 500k miles before something major breaks. In most cases, it happens WELL before that lol

Where I live they are usually pretty rusty by that time and by 200k I am ready for something newer or at least something with less miles and more reliability. I drive about 20k miles a year.

Honda is my fave import...I'm so sick of seeing people drool over basic daily driver toyotas like they are perfect. I know you said honda or toyota..but honda people seem to have more common sense,and know they have a really good car or truck, and know it's not literally bulletproof

    I bought a 2003 Toyota Highlander when it was new and kept it until July 2018. I LOVED that car! ❤ It had ivory color cloth interior that was beautiful and excellent fabric. I used car seat covers a lot because I had a few big dogs over those 15 years who often rode in the vehicle. I had a buyer lined up within 2 days of posting it for sale. He fell in love with it during his test drive. The seat fabric was still beautiful 15 years later. ❤

    I've got an 01 Highlander Limited with just shy of 200K on it. Absolutely love the little bugger. Comfortable on longer trips gets decent fuel mileage and yes the glow of the check engine light keeps me warm... so do the heated seats I swapped in! Regardless, I have 3 other vehicles (Tundra, Sequoia, OJ Bronco) but I can't seem to part with the little bugger. Check engine light is for a small evap leak but I can usually bypass that here in the state of California when it comes to SMOG testing. BTW anyone who has an 01/02, do yourself a favor and swap in a center console from an 03+.

    Old Toyotas are amazing. I had a 2007 camry. Bought it at 174000 for 5500 dollars. Racked it up to over 220000 miles before I sold it to a former friend. Had engine light on, cat converter needed some work, but the damn thing ran. I honestly regret parting with it. Good first car for sure.

    I'm not really an SUV or truck person but if I need to regularly haul stuff around I might do what a friend of mine did in that he bought a used Ford Ranger and put a cargo cover over the bed. He paid a lot less than SUVs with similar miles. SUVs are in high demand so the prices on them are really up there even with higher mileage.

      I once had a 2007 Ranger Sport extended cab 4WD. Get the 4.0L V-6. It will suck gas but it's a bullet proof engine. The little trucks can take a hell of a lot of punishment as well. Just be prepared a rough, crude ride, and not so great acceleration. Even with the strongest engine (4.0L), it's slow.

    My 2006 Nissan X-Trail T30 nows has 150,000 miles on it and still going strong. No engine issues, the 4WD works perfectly, and the transmission is still OK too (but it's a little worn).
    Those T30s were an older design from when Nissan made better vehicles. It's a perfect little off-roader that gets much better gas mileage compared to typical off-road vehicles.

    Love to hear a rational older mechanic. It it works fine, don't bother spending thousands of dollars on unnecessary repairs.

    My 10 year old GS350 has a lot of aluminum parts. I'm in the upper Midwest and there's very, very little rust anywhere.

      @N-light-end-1I’m thinking Lexus quit producing the GS about 7-8 yrs ago? Maybe that’s why they’re harder to find. But you would still think there would be a used-car market for them. 🤷🏻‍♂️

      @N-light-end-1 alright I googled it. Last production year of the GS was 2020, but their sales were on the downward slide since the early-mid teens. Most likely due to the sales growth of SUV’s.

    That’s true about the timing belt. It’s peace of mind to get it replaced every 100k miles but I have never heard of one that never got replaced ever snapping.

    I’ve got my 2002 Toyota Highlander. Scotty got it on the nose. This car is great. I’ve had it for five years and it’s not had a single problem. The maintenance is super easy you just do the timing belt every hundred to 120,000 miles. I live in California, so I have no check engine lights on. But the funny thing is I let my friends borrow it to go to Arizona because they’re little Nissan Versa can’t handle it. 😂 and I paid less for my car!

    Original timing belts last longer than a replaced one, at least on the Honda Ridgeline forum. More have broken after being replaced. Original belts can be a problem if the vehicle is not driven, then pressure on the belt is in one spot for a long period of time possibly creating a weak spot.

    I have an '05 in PA. 3.3LV6. No "check engine" lights. Belt broke about 10k miles ago. Runs great but the rust monster is eating it.

      Just change the oil and filters and don’t use your car for drifting etc. unless it’s been built for it. If you do, be prepared to fix it or buy a new one every week.

    Anyway, I would plan to buy a used, 2021 or 2022 Mazda CX-9 AWD crossover SUV, because it has the 2.5 L turbocharged four-cylinder engine with Skyactiv technology, which produces 250 horsepower and the six-speed automatic transmission. I am still a fan of the all-new, 2024 Mazda CX-90 AWD crossover with the 3.3 L six-cylinder turbocharged engine, which produces 340 horsepower, as well as the eight-speed automatic transmission. They are excellent vehicles, but they have not received any recalls or problems with those vehicles, yet, same with the all-new, 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander AWD Hybrid MAX. Thank you very much.

    My mom bought an 05 Highlander Limited brand new and we ended up having it for 17 years! Had to sell it since the engine started burning oil and the problems were getting more expensive/frequent, but for almost reaching 300k miles? One hell of a vehicle.

    Aluminum front end parts might not rust out but steel parts do not bend and twist as badly upon pothole impact

    I have a 4Runner with a 4.7 liter V8! Sure a Highlander has as much room and gets better gas mileage but as for off-road capability and heavy towing capacity, you can keep your Highlanders!

    I have a 2010 Tacoma I purchased used with low mileage and I rust prevented it as soon as I got it. The frame still looks good after 13 years. I also annually look at the frame and touch it up wherever needed.

    Even way back in 2004, they should have had better rust proofing. Dealing with New England blizzards, my old Taurus and later MKZ has zero issues with rust whatsoever after over a decade old. And these vehicles drove through miles of salt and slush every winter. My buddies 2002 Camry went over a decade without rust problems either.
    This vehicle sounds like it was not rust proofed properly.

      @@outterlimits1 After every snow storm and then throughout the winter in between. It's considered almost mandatory here unless you don't like your car. Salt doesn't really get off the roads until a really good rainstorm.

    Scotty, it's amazing what you consider good- just because it's a Toyota and still going down the road, if that was a Chrysler product you would be bad mouthing the thing left and right, i have a 2006 fusion with 223k miles, i've only ever had one code for new spark plugs at 155k, just one code Scotty- ever- everything else is original

    @scottykilmer I live in middle TN too. Haha I would love for you to do a video about my 2003 dodge ram 1500 truck with 410,000 miles only routine maintenance, I've owned it since 32,000. To get your amazement that dodge made a something that lasts hahaha knock on wood it's my daily driver.

    My Lexus RX330 is working and looking extraordinarily good. The 3.3 is a closed deck engine design, so it's doing better than my other Lexus RX350, which has a head gasket problem on that open deck, 2GR-FE engine.

    I had a 2004 Highlander up in upstate NY State .
    If you try and jack it up where the factory jack / pinch points are , you ll probly crush thru the metal .

      @@richsweeney1115 If You lived here you would know that , due to the fact there is a Giant Salt Mine near Geneseo , NY and that they use an insane amount of salt in the winter and it kills those year Toyotas even faster than other makes .
      And since I bought it used , the 1st owners may or may not have washed it off .
      But Its a Common Problem with any Toyota with a Frame in the 2000s that the frames would rust out from inside .
      Ive seen it on Sequoias , Tundras , Tacomas and 4Runners , here .
      The unibody Highlanders and Rav4s hold up much better up here .

    I have a 2006 4Runner with 174,000 miles and the body is still minty. The frame on the other hand is not so good. Might need some welding to get it to pass inspection but it is a beast. Still getting 26 mpg and runs great.

    I have a 2005 Highlander with 250k miles, same P0420/430 codes for six years. Has no impact on my MPG or how the car drives.

    I dropped my 2007 Saturn Aura 199K miles for a 2006 MDX about 140K miles, but the stock radio was replaced with an aftermarket USB... it broke in a year, I found a stock system for 60 bucks & it is still working. Keep it stock, if you can, your next buyer will thank you.

    Honda does not use timing belts on their new v6! They switched to timing chains on the v6 in 2018

    Scotty, here in the UK if any of those lights are on, the vehicle wouldn't get through an MOT (Ministry of Transport) Test -- which means it's not allowed on the road, and a vehicle that can only be kept in the garage or on the drive, is no good to man or beast.

    I have a 2002 with only 199k! Mines 2WD and no stupid TPMS! Runs like brand new but I keep it strictly maintained and serviced. Need to do valve cover gaskets soon,.and I have the rear valve cover from this 3.3 engine that has a better design

    Here in the State of Confusion (California) any car 1976 and newer must pass a smog test every two years. No check engine light, and all of the monitors must be ready for a test, so none of this "clear the codes and pass the test".

    I’ve owned several different vehicles. From dodge to Honda to Toyota, BMW, Infinity etc…
    But the one I Loved the most is my 4-Runner it was a 2013 Limited and I just traded it in for a new Honda CR-V for gas mileage only…..

      BettyGitzke, that new CR-V - I’m guessing it has the 1.5 liter 4 cyl? If so, have the oil changed every 5000 miles or 6 months…whichever comes sooner. If you do a lot of in-town driving, take it out in the hwy like once a week for 20-30 minutes to keep condensation from forming in your fuel system.

      @@sunshinesuen6998 the 4-Runner I was getting around 18/20 highway and around town maybe close to the same. The Honda I’m getting 34/36 miles on the highway and not sure around town. I got the Honda in May of this year. Hope that helps you.

      Part of me believes certain things like air bags should be required to be functional. I know for sure I would not be driving anything where the air bags were out. And why is the air bag even out on this 2004 model? It was probably recalled at some point and can be replaced for free.

      I have made some comments on this. For a 2004 this was not rust proofed well at all. Control arms and suspension parts rusting? Yikes. Lived in NE my whole life and never had any issues with rusting parts, even on vehicles 10+ years old. If this was 1984 I would understand. But even by 1994 rust proofing was already worlds better. For a 2004, those parts should not have rusted away.

      I thought just the opposite. At the beginning of the video Scotty mentions the owner had to replace things like control bars and suspension parts. Living in New England my whole life rust proofing really improved dramatically in the 1990's. Having vehicles way over 10 years old I have never had rust issues at all. This sounds like it was poorly rust proofed.

    I don't think the 3.3 is an interference engine. My brother had a 05 Solara with the same engine and the timing belt snapped due to a leaky water pump and it was easily fixed after by a toyota tech. That or he got very lucky

    Body panels not rusting doesn't really impress me. That really hasn't been an issue in NE for a long time. It should have been better rust proofed on the bottom. Control arms and suspension parts rusted on this vehicle, made in 2004? Yikes.
    The only vehicles where I see rust on the rear panels are Ram and GM pickups. Some as little as 4 years old. But it's always been normal for them.
