My great-great-great-great grandfather was John S. Kidder who fought under Emory Upton in the 121st New York Volunteers. This is so cool! Amazing to see what our ancestors lived on.
Does wearing a forage cap from that era without insignia says that the soldier is a draftee who could be place in any company that had a severe loss of men dead or wounded for replacement?
Not exactly, because according to all the research that I have done, the average civil war soldier of that time did not really have any insignias on there forage caps. Manly due to the fact that were ether not issued them or just threw them away.
You probably just need a standard uniform with a belt, along with a canteen and haversack. That should be enough, plus the drum obviously. Thanks for asking!
I buy from C&C sutlery, but the shipping price is high unless your from the place that c&c sutlery is from, I bought some stuff from the aiken reenactment my first reenactment. I plan on getting more gear for my Union uniform.

Thanks, it's very cool indeed!
This kid probably accurately represents the typical soldier and how young and unprepared they were to deal with the realities of battle.
