My first flute book I had is the essential elements band books 😂😂
Cathy Yue I used those books too!
+Cathy Yue Haha! I taught out of the books too when my students would bring them to lessons!
SAMEEE
Cathy Yue I am doing the flute one now I started last fall.
Cathy Yue omg same i started flute last year and finished the book a while ago, I'm now using '66 great tunes' and also sheet music my teacher gives me, I also have band pieces to practice.
*Scrolls through youtube*
"My first flut-"
*CLICKS*
LOL!! I hope you enjoyed it!!!! ^_^
I'm dying😂💀
Jacob Muniz zip used this book 1960, moved to the intermediate book, then to the Eck Method book. I just purchased the Rubank Intermediate book again recently to get me back in shape. I used to be very good. Now, ummm... not so much. I even have to work on hand position so I can use my open holed flute without plugs.
My book was Standard of Excellence - its used here a lot in Australia. If I still had mine it would have ticks and dates from 1999/2000.
My first books were the essential elements band books
Chloe same they are great
Gooooo Pochacco! I loved your advice with teaching the Rubank method book :)
I am a horn player in a local orchestra, and lately I have been attracted to the idea of learning a second instrument. I have chosen the flute and ordered the Rubank Elementary book after seeing it on another one of your videos. My flute is supposed to arrive on Friday, and I can hardly wait.
OMG, I love your videos I try to watch all of the videos you make! You are awesome! I've been playing for a year and a half and I finally got my intermediate flute, it's an Azumi AZ3000.
+Meredith Wiederspahn Woohoo! That's an awesome flute! And thanks for watching my videos!! 😊
also wanted to give you a shout out on your lighting! your make up looks awesome here!
+Krisstofer Shaw Aw, thank you! Doing my best with what I've got!
You started playing flûte since when I was born😂❤️how consistent serious you are on playing flûte
This was my first book too (I think) back in 1960!!!!! at age 9. I did not start studying privately until age 15 and then I had a GREAT teacher my jr. and sr. years of high school (I won't drop names). I had a revelation earlier this evening after my swim that I started playing flute 59 years ago! So my 60th anniversary will be in 2020.
I am no cinematographer by any means yet the picture and audio were fine, and the content is wonderful. Please keep making your contributions to us about life and music. Thank you!
+Christopher Williams Aw, thanks so much! I had a particular look in mind, and the video wasn't lining up with my vision, so I felt like the whole thing was a bit off. But thanks for the encouragement, makes me feel better about it 😊
the quality of the video was fine! I started with the band book: standard of excellence or smth.
I started with these "Hören, Lesen, Spielen" books (it's German because I'm from Switzerland) and I remember that it had some melodies with a solo part. And that solo was just a empty part, so you could play what you want. I never played anything at those parts, because I was too shy and afraid to play something I made up. Then I started to cry😂 Now I think it's funny, because I like to play solo.
Awww, but that is a super cute way of teaching improvisation!!! I'm so so curious, I need to look this up!!
Omg I played out of those books too and those solo bits scared the crap out of me 😂
That would frighten me too. I was never taught how to improvise. I had a guitar player tell me once "Just play any note" but that doesn't always work with the chord structure.
these books are the best for kids. I love them
Oh the nostalgia I can feel coursing through this video
The nostalgia was pretty real. So many memories!
I recommend the essential elements book 1 bc it walks you through all the notes and stuff but it's really your choice 👌
I got ya beat....my Rubank book is from 1978 :D I got the Intermediate book in 1980.
I just got the Trevor Wye books for flute and piccolo and I've been working with those. Haven't gotten too far though...still working on harmonics...and I used them last week at rehearsal :)
I've used the Rubank books and they're still exactly the same as when I used them in high school. And I still have them too.
The Rubank was my third book. Can't remember the first two but my 1st book had a green cover and the 2nd one was orange. In any case I started in *gasp* 1979!
I started in 1978! I remember having one book for the full band that we went through during class and we had the Rubank books for our individual instruments. I was so excited to learn flute so I could learn piccolo that I went through the entire band book in a month LOL That's when the teacher told me to slow down and he started me early on the Rubank book.
I'm using essential elements for my oboe and piccolo now!
My First too. I love rubank
Oh this cracks me up!! I have the Rubank books! I have the selected duets for all of my students! (I'm a band teacher now) Flute is my primary instrument (of course) but we have a lot of books from teachers 'past' and just going through everything there are some books that are from the 60s!!! Have you heard of the "Master Theory" Series? I had those books in elementary school, and then I used them for a bit when I started teaching. Right now my students are using the "Essential Elements" series. It's okay, but not my favorite.
Hey I love your videos and I have a couple questions for you! What exactly is a prodigy? And I'm in middle school and am thinking about going to music school, and need a piccolo however, I am not sure if I should get a professional piccolo or a cheap student piccolo. Thoughts?
Mine was essential elements and i remember going through it so excitedly the summer before i started playing and not understanding ANYTHING 🤣
Stickers! I only had them for my piano lessons (started at age 7).
no joke I was going to look for a flute book and I saw it on Amazon and I saw this video and I was like perfect. thanks for the great video :)
+ZaneGaming Haha! I'm so glad I helped you out! You may want to look into the Trevor Wye beginner books too. He does such a great job of actually explaining what his exercises are trying to accomplish 😊
@@JustAnotherFlutist Okay, so best to get the Trevor Ye Beginner books initially...or what for the self taught?
I would have a whole Library if I got the various different books people recommended on my Facebook flute forum.
So far those are mostly
1. the flute book boot camp manual".
2. flute 101,
3. The beginner Wye books ( though I'm a little confused over what those are versus the practice books)
4. Eubanks
5. Flute for dummies.
Any help so I'm not spending $200 willy-nilly on beginning flute books?
Something that can teach somebody flute as if they are a "slow child".
My used Pearl 500 cost me $300 as it is. (I know that's not much and it's a pretty basic flute, but for me it's a lot for something I'm just starting on).
My first flute book back in 1998 was
A Tune a Day: Flute, Book 1 by C. Paul Herfurth and Hugh Stuart
This book was great! I went on to book 2 and then onto print copies and orchestra music while I was at school. Since school I play mostly hymns and new age church music. I wish I had more time to play outside of work and church but its great to be able to play when I can. I really miss my Artley flute (It's in my home country). I am playing a really cheap flute these days, that while it sounds okay, doesn't sound anywhere near as nice as my other flute. I want to upgrade so badly.
I don't remember what my first book was, but right now, I'm working out of Flute 103 by Patricia George and Phyllis Louke. I also have The Flute Scale book by that duo. The Flute Scale Book I have often joked is about as close as I'll ever come to enjoying scales practice.
I currently use Rubank Elementary Method and also Selected Duets. I started to learn to play flute about a year ago, and I think those two books are very helpful. I also have the Trevor Wye Practice Book (The Omnibus Edition), but I think it's just too hard for my current level. 😀
+JustAnotherFlutist I was wondering how to not make much sound of taking a breath while playing? My breathes are always loud and I don't know how to lessen the sound in my breathss
I actually saw the elementary book yesterday as I purchased the Trevor Wye tone book
I also started with the Rubank Elementary. Opinion on the Flute 101 series?
THAT MELODY IS NON C'Ę PIÚ!!!!! Celtic woman has a lovely version of it!
Reddit recommended I use Flute 101: Mastering the Basics. That combined with some of your tutorials helped get me started.
My son starts flute in the next week or so. His teacher had me order "Trevor Wye beginners book for the flute part 1" and "graham Lyons take up the flute book 1". I'm sad to see him stop piano (at least he thinks he is!😂😂😂) but he is super excited to try flute.
At this moment I am self learning from the Rubank book 1 and also play from duets book , both given to me by a flute playing friend.
Music timing is my bane, but I'm improving. I find myself watching flute performances and zooming in on the video to study their embrasure so to improve my own.
That makes you about 2 or 3 years older than me because I was 6 in 1998.. I started playing the flute in August of 2004( about two and a half months before my 12th birthday). I actually started with the 21st century band method book and the essential elements. Then, when I was in 8th grade I started using the Rubank advanced method book 1.Also, I had a bunch of beginner pop flute books that my dad gave me. It would be really cool if you did a video about your favorite flute repertoire or flute pieces that you feel are very important for the flute 😃
OH NO, PLEASE FINISH YOUR COMMENT, I'M DYING TO KNOWWWWWWWW
Also, yup, I knew you'd be one of the ones to figure out how old I am :P
JustAnotherFlutist I'm 24 years old ( I'll be turning 25 in November) I clicked on the post button by accident 😋
+Kiara Eijo Hahaha! I actually have some pre-written notes about flute repertoire! 😊
LOL @ your comments on the 1998 page in the Rubank book- in '98 I had graduated high school, done four years in the Marine Corps, eight years in the Army, and had been out of the service for seven years. Yeah, that's right- Kennedy was my first President :D
Could you make a video on productivity as a musician? Like how do you work and schedule your day?
+Flutist Oh boy, good idea. Will put that in my notes for a future video!
What brand of metro/tuner do you use? I'm a brand new adult self-taught flutist.
I spent alot of my time with the Mary Karen Clardy etude book. When I wasnt working out of a book, I was working on solo rep.
I literally JUST heard of that one from a student of mine. So tempted to go on a shopping spree to buy all these method books, hahahaha
My first method books were Michael Aaron for piano.
And don't worry about how old your books are. I have cookie sheets older than you.
What grade would you call the rubank books ie elementary is grade 1 and 2, intermediate 3 and 4 ect..??
You're the best musician on RUclips!
Aw, I wouldn't say that, but I'm super flattered! Thank you!!
I LOVE THE RUBANKS BOOK!!!!!!
The advanced volumes are cool...
I am a beginner. I started with Rubank, and right now working on flute 102.
Me too...my first flute book...
My first flute books were the Standard of Excellence books lol I’m working in the 3rd one now
I had Yamaha then excellence on achievement had the advance on of those books for clarinet.
My school uses the Bruce Pearson "Standard of Excellence" books, and I'm a book ahead than my band peers, and the reason for this is because no one takes their instrument and practices at home. I haven't had a single lesson with my band teacher during the day in about two years because my grade doesn't work with her schedule and last year, my schedule was so messed up that I didn't even have a band day and now the kids in my previous grade now have their singular lessons.
On old books (and persons): My clarinet teacher is some two years my senior; I'm 75. We use Baermann: Klarinettenschule from 1867 in what looks like an identical reprint. Some ancients knew what they were doing.
If you take on new students for lessons, how do you introduce then into the flute? Like, do you know if there are exercises for beginners? I keep trying to find some but I can't find any good ones. I'm currently self taught cos I am not long after graduating high school. I'm on a music course for the next two years at a thing called tech (it's like college). I really want to go to uni but I'm taking time out to improve my other skills (vocal and clarinet) and even though I can't really afford a teacher I was wondering about how a beginner (6 months) could improve gradually. I know I need regular practice but I can't really tell how to know if I'm improving or what kind of exercises will benefit me the most such as clear tone and learning proper fingerings. I only have one flute book at the moment and since I love your videos I was just wondering what kind of things I can do to improve as a flutist and how to tell if I'm making any difference. I understand if you are very busy but any help you could give would be very much appreciated. Thank you very much for your time!
The book I use is essential elements 2000 for flute
+Marcy Farlow Classic!

I started off on the Rubank Elementary book back in the early 1990s. I remember thinking that I would be super advanced by the time I got to the Rubank Selective Studies book.
+Erin F OMG, I thought the same! Was kind of disappointed when I finished the advanced book and then realized I had a long way to go 😂
I started in January this year, and I started working from "A New Tune A Day" by Ned Bennet.
+OmariLiveHD This one is a super popular one!
My first book was accent on achievement book 1 for Flute
My first flute books were
Rubank
Essential elements
rubank elementary method was actually made in 1934
Crazy!
My first book ever was Also the Elementary Rubank Flute method!!
And I also finished it on 1 year!
And I still Have it!😂😂😂
+Wil Flauto Don't let it go! 😊
JustAnotherFlutist
I won't
I have the same kind of rubank module! but I'm a saxophonist
+Tchaikovsky Hahahaha! Urban kids unite!
I used the german book FLÖTE SPIELEN Band 1!
lol I'm working in the advanced method rubank book😂
1998?? My first book is dated 1978.
my band director just let me switched to saxophone and the first book i worked to of was the essential elements book but i only worked out of it for the fingerings because he also gave me this years concert music witch was stuff like arabesque, persis overture, and mars: bringer of war. I cried a lil but to everyone's surprise, even myself, i picked it up really quick and i was playing advanced music in no time. How is that even possible? (keeping in mind that i only really started to be passionate about music the same year. I've had some lessons on piano when i was 7-8 but thats about it. Im 16 now and and i switched from trumpet to saxophone)
+RachidPokemon Sometimes, things just "click", and a bunch of things that were taught to you before that you may not have fully comprehended suddenly makes sense. It's kinda as if your brain holds a lot of information but just hasn't finished processing it until now!
my first book were essential elements and standard of excellence XD
+I love Kittens Haha, the classics!
1990 free public domain version of this book:
openlibrary.org/works/OL16817804W/Rubank_Elementary_Method_-_Flute_or_Piccolo
I have a question for you. did you do marching band?
+ZaneGaming Nope! For some reason, I missed every opportunity to do it!
I worked out of Essential Elements flute books
I played from the essential elements band books and I remember for the life of me I couldn't play Skip to my Lou
I'm about 10 years older than you, and its funny how we both can't believe how long it has been since we first started in elementary school! :)
+Krisstofer Shaw I know, right??
My first flute book was the Trevor Wye method for beginners. Lovely.
BUT the one I remember the most (in a bad way) is Francisco Gonzalez. Pure scales. I hated it. I still use it to practise my diaphragm exercises :')
+NoA12 The Trevor Wye beginner books are amazing! I taught out of them! And oh man, I should look up that Francisco Gonzalez book 😂
Essential elements 2000 comprehensive band methods in F horn
my books are out of print now, but I am able to order off ebay and Amazon.
+Krisstofer Shaw Haha, one of my students scored an amazing flute library for super cheap over eBay!
I have the selected duets book because my old private lesson teacher in 6th grade wanted our group to get it But then we never used it so I cri everytiem. It was kind of a waste of money lol.
I am an intermediate flute player I guess, my second year of playing flute. I have the first and second tradition of excellence books, and some other extremely skinny band music book, which was a waste of money because we only used it once lol. Then I have a red district method book from 6th grade, and a blue distric method book for this year in 7th grade. We hardly ever use them XD
+CARRIE W Whaaaaat 😞 Have another look at the selected duets book at least! That one is a fun one to sight read with friends! 😊 (historically, chamber music was mostly sight read at home for fun with friends too!)
my first book was called sound innovations
+Molly And More I think I taught out of that one once!
my beginner textbook was essential elements 2000
Oh boy! Many of my students brought that book to me from their band, so I ended up teaching out of it for a while!!
The elementary Rubank book is as old as me.
I am just going to 6th grade and just got the rubank elementary book
Omg, I don't remember which books I had! I assume Essential Elements was one 🤷
I have this book 😂😂😂
wow. 0 dislikes. way to go joanna!!!
I freaking love you! I'm a male 14 year old flute player.
+GB10 FTW Aw, I love you too!!
Joanna: October 21, 1998. That is how old this book is. 9 years old
Me: Wait, so I'm only 9 years old?
Dude same
+Thadyn Du Pont Young 'uns! 😝
my first book was the red standard of excellence book lol
Yes another JAF video!!! Why couldn't the girl play the vibraphone with the mallets? because they're to STICK-y!
The Tabletop Mage 🙄lol
+The Tabletop Mage YAS YOU'RE STILL HERE
Actually, now thinking about it, the abracadabra woodwind books might have just been an English thing...
That's part of why I want to know what you guys worked out of!!! Even in the States, bands and teachers favour different method books depending on the region!!
There were also books that were called Time Pieces for _____ which had a range of pieces from different periods, I remember using them quite a lot and also there are the ABRSM grade books that I've used for getting started on other instruments, but I did a different board for flute
The stickers are older than me.. I'm 17 lol
I learned from A New Tune A day for flute. Anyone else?
Oh and i practiced from the Trevor Wye books early on too!
I've seen that one before!!
And did you know he came out with Beginner books??? They're so good!! I taught out of them!
JustAnotherFlutist
wow I didn't know he did beginner ones! I'll do some research! The practice ones are amazing. Great video :)
You say you are old…
YOU AREN'T OLD!!!!!!!!!!
WHO LEARNT OUT OF THE ABRACADABRA BOOKS??
LOL!! I totally went to look that up on Amazon!! I've heard of it, but not seen it, and now I want to buy it so I can take a look!!
They teach through real tunes, like folk tunes from various backgrounds and occasionally simplified versions of orchestral things as opposed to exercises written for beginners. I think that's why I like them so much because it still feels like you're playing proper music instead of like really long held notes or something :)
OMG, I love that!!!!
Wow :0
Hahaha, but what did you work out of/are you working out of?? ^_^
JustAnotherFlutist I play flute :p you replied you are the best ❤️
I am younger than the stickers😂😂😂
My first son was born in 1998
2:10
Jo: This book is almost 20 yrs old 😫😫
Me: Face it Joanna. You're Old😎😎
(Dear Random person in the comments section:
This is not meant to offend Johanna but just "Lion" the mood a little bit)
WF out!!
I should delete this comment
No, don't, I love it 😂😂😂
You are not 'that' old 😀
