The more expensive instrument isn't always the one for you, it's the one that resonates best for you literally and figuratively! A beginner driver wouldn't get the most out of a Ferrari.

I would LOVE to watch a video where you take a conical flute, like a Pratten or a Palanca, out for a spin and see what you can do with it or what you think of it as someone coming from the Boehm world. :-)
It would also be neat to have you get maybe three different flutes -- a gold, a silver, and a nickel -- and have you play them blindfolded so you can't tell which is which and see if you can call them correctly. Or maybe different models or manufacturers?

Love this video! I already knew some of the specs and what they meant, but I found out, not everything is about specs. Could you maybe cover in your next video the Open G sharp mechanism? I know it’s a little unspoken of, but the only player I know that has one is denis Bouriakov. It keeps the G sharp key open when you press the L3 finger and closes the “second” g key with the once G sharp leaver. So there’s no need for a side G sharp hole. It also gets rid of the need for a split E since you can just press down the second G key for the same effect as a split e.

My old flute was a Yamaha 211 student model flute. I was planning on upgrading to a better flute because it didn't resonate that well. Last summer I found a flute at my aunt's and she gave it to me. I played it and it felt so much better, like if it was made for me. The only difference between these flute is the head joint, the Pearl flute's is more oval. They are both silver plated and have closed holes. What I learned is that the material isn't always the most important thing when changing to a "better" flute, the lip hole is as important.
Even though I don't play the flute anymore, I still watch your videos 😂. I've been watching your videos ever since I was in 7th grade. Im in 8th grade right now and I have to play the trombone and trumpet this year. I miss playing the flute so I'll definitely play it next year along with trombone (I don't really like trumpet XD)
Treble Johnny I’m in grade 8 too and I play the flute. I wouldn’t give it up for trumpet even if our conductor paid me 😂😂😂😂
The FCNY is an excellent option for those in the US but the extra perks don't seem to be available for international flute players. I wish there was a good alternative in Canada. Thanks for going through some of the differences between flute options. I'm currently renting but would like to buy eventually and I wish I could try different flutes before making the investment.

I absolutely love your videos! I am a self taught flutist, and the only flutist in my band. I did wonder if it would be beneficial for me to get a B-foot joint, but I haven’t received any music that requires it. My cousin is a year older than me, and she plays a Jupiter flute that has closed holes, and a B-foot joint. She said that she is normally playing in the ledger lines. She said that she also doesn’t use the gizmo on the foot joint. If you could, could you possibly do a video on the gizmo?

I have noticed that a lot of flutists that I have met in Clarksville prefer silver. In Miami, a lot of people I know prefer gold but some other people prefer silver. Personally, I prefer silver because I feel that I have more possibilities in terms of tone color with silver than I do with gold
One minor quibble with the offset G comment about people with large hands: it's more than that. On a lot of musical instruments, it's relative finger length that matters as much or more than overall hand size. If you place your hand flat on a table with all your fingers together, you'll see that your ring finger is shorter than your middle finger, but you'll also see that it is either the same length, longer, or shorter than your INDEX finger on the same hand. (It's called either the 2D to 4D ratio or digit ratio.)
Most often, men's ring fingers are longer than their index fingers, and women's ring fingers are either the same length or shorter than their index fingers. And the longer your ring finger is, the less you need the offset G. (Most men can probably get away without it because prenatal testosterone exposure makes their ring fingers longer.)
However, for me as an example, even though my hands are very large for a woman and large enough to hit a tenth on the piano with zero effort, I would be totally screwed without an offset G, because my ring finger is substantially shorter than both my middle finger AND my index finger. (This causes me minor issues on my conical flute and enormous ones on the harp.)
So anyway, for a lot of instruments, pay attention not only to your overall hand size, but to the relative finger lengths and whether your ring finger is shorter, the same size, or longer than your index finger. The shorter your ring finger is, even if you have large hands, the more you'll need the offset G. I'm actually looking into getting a diagonal G on my conical flute because of it.
For those specs that actually make a difference in sound (such as metal types), it would be great to include a sample of each option so we can hear them for comparison:-):-):-)
I think every flute I've owned has had an offset G. My Pearl is the first with split E and pointed key arms, open hole and B footjoint. Haven't really noticed much of a difference between the two, but the Pearl plays nicer for me.
Split E makes a really big difference for me and i really love for it.

That said, I met my American language buddy today and I was fully expecting... well, an American, but no, she's native Chinese, which I'm actually really happy about. She's also a violinist :D for some reason I instantly tend to get on great with Chinese musicians 😂

I'm going to get a flute with a gold lip plate; not because I want to, but because I need to. My current flute is nickelplated. I am very, *very* allergic to nickel and as a result, have had dry blisters, sores, and pimples on my bottom lip and chin ever since I started playing. I'm allergic to silver as well, though not as violently as nickel, so my choices are limited. There's a very nice rose gold Azumi I've been ogling. It's £1650-ish, so a nice price for a step-up flute.
Thanks for another informative video! I'm using JAF at the Flute Center again! Looking at the B-foot, I'm wondering if it will help the C any? I can only hit the low C when my flute is fully warm and the headjoint is precisely positioned. I routinely use the foot keys to tune upper registers too, how this will change with a B-foot? Please share all the nerdy details of the Split-E (G), thanks!!
Personally I like the B foot better because the flute is more balanced. It’s my personal preference.
My flute has inline G, my pinkies are short. I got used to the inline G mechanism, now it feels weird when I play my student flute with offset G. If I ever get a new flute, I will now always go with inline G I'm so used to it.
Could you please do a piccolo version of this please? Im looking for a piccolo headjoint or possibly a new pic altogether but because they are actually seemingly drastically different from Flutes it would be a tremendous help. Especially if you included marching (band) terminologies
Actually, fun fact about the modern flute! The BODY is cylindrical but the head joint is conical. Flutes beforehand had a conical body and a cylindrical head joint, look at the piccolo for example. The piccolo couldn’t be changed to have a cylindrical body and is like old flutes with a cylindrical head joint and conical body which is why it’s so tricky to tune

I started playing flute in the 70s and student models were offset G. My next flute was inline and I do not think that I had an option for offset G.

Regarding precious metals, it depends what sound you’re after, gold is much warmer than silver and produces a better lower sound, I knew someone who had a platinum lip plate and it produced a very dark sound and the lower notes sound much deeper than silver. Silver is much brighter than gold and platinum

My friend has an in-line G flute with a B foot joint. It’s just, so weird. I like my precious off-set G, okay?
My marching flute is a C foot joint, my concert flute is a B foot joint, both an offset
I had no idea what a split e mechanism was until I watched this (I started playing my student flute again this year). But I don't have a problem with my high e. It comes out clear and solid, though I want to try a flute with one to see if there's a difference. The note I hate playing the most though is the middle octave c#. It just never sounds stable. Wondering if anyone else has that problem?

Can you make a video about home maintenance? If you already did or know someone who has made a good video you or another viewer can simply tell me. Or you can just reply and not make a video even if you haven't. Or you can just ignore me... that's fine to. I feel like this is an important topic because bad stuff would obviously happen to a flute if you don't take care of it. I know with Wooden Recorders If you don't dry them they will go moldy and will get permanently damaged. So I was wondering if you could give a bit of insight? Regardless I still love you videos!

I've noticed that sometimes while I'm playing, my right pinky locks up sometimes, is this because I have double jointed fingers or something else?
That happens to me too but I'm not double jointed.

I'm a self-taught that is using the same student model that she started with, and I have no idea how to go around looking at better flutes. . . Or even convincing my parents to get me a better one. My only hope at this point is finding a flute that reacts well with my playing style and my skin. I'm allergic to my current one. (Yes, I have odd skin allergies. Blame my body not me)
Try finding a used headjoint with a gold liplate and a sterling silver or nickel silver head joint and that could help with your odd alleragy

When buying a flute just recently, the c foot was extra. It wasn’t a choice between the two. If you wanted a c foot you had to buy it. It is not considered standard.

Open hole vs. Closed hole: Your forgot to tell people that open hole pads have to be glued instead of screwd into the cup. What that means should be known ;-)
