They are definitely high middle class tho. I would've never used 90,000$ just for instruments. There's alot more urgent stuff to spend it on.
Just note the median household income is $74,580, (source is the Census Bureau's website) so it's hard to say they aren't at least somewhat wealthy when their instruments alone are worth more than the average American Household can spend in a year without goung into debt.

Reality check from a former professional string player.... These are not super expensive or super high quality instruments in the string world. With the talent of these kids, aside from the tiniest ones right now, the 7 older kids could easily be playing instruments 3 or 4 times the cost of the ones they have. And.... I know many of the older kids won grants or competitions and used the money to pay for whatever instrument they could get.
If I was rich, I'd buy the oldest 7 kids instruments that match their ability level right now. No shade at all on Amber and Marc, who are doing amazing things with very little resources. You guys are soooo inspiring! All blessings to you

I’m not a string player, but I play a couple different woodwind instruments. I’m not a professional, but would love to and am considering it for after high school although I have another (more stable) career in mind but will keep music on the side. Instruments are expensive! I plan on buying a bass clarinet soon, 3k for one of the cheaper student models. But it’s the model I play in school which I can play from low Eb to sometimes the altissimo G (only if I work up to it, can comfortably play altissimo E though), but that’s the full range of that model. Then I also play tenor saxophone and a little bit of soprano clarinet (haven’t have a decent one in years, the one I have has keys that stick too much to play consistently, it was free). I wish instruments were a bit cheaper. I would die for a professional bass clarinet that goes down to low C and possibly up higher than the G!

Especially because the younger ones playing the same instruments as the older ones will be able to have hand me downs when they save for the more expensive ones. @@laufey.kit’s almost always a joke, don’t worry :) we secretly like viola! It’s just less fun to play in an orchestra setting because you can go literally years without playing a melody line once. But, for solos, violas sound SO much better in my opinion!! Also, people poke fun because you have to learn alto clef which doesn’t really transfer to basically any other instrument. I guess my point is just that it takes a lot of dedication to commit to viola what with all the perceived drawbacks that come with it, compared to violin.
Also, I know at least IM permanently scarred from listening to the viola section be terrible in school for 5+ years… there were like 3 of them in the whole orchestra and since they didn’t get melodies, and with 3 people it kinda gets drowned out, I would bet actual money that none of them practiced :/ thankfully my sister plays viola and is more into it than I am lol

@@Lffewgj Please spare me. We both know the difference between essentials and luxuries. $60,000 SUVs, brand-name clothing, "fast fashion," the latest styles, restaurant dining -- these are not essentials. Heck, there are people who will cheerfully drop $75000 on one year's tuition at a tony private college in New England. Is that absurd, too, in your opinion? You might think $5000 is a lot to spend on a violin but you might not be aware that violin LESSONS in a place like New York City will cost $120 per hour. So, you're spending upward of $5000 per child per year for lessons, too (possibly only the teenagers have one-hour lessons). Full disclosure my daughter's cello lessons are 75 minutes, her cello was $8000, and her bow was $1800). Learning the violin is an expensive proposition. It's expensive. Without the right tools, a child's progress will be held back and their chance at a career as a musician jeopardized. Everyone makes choices. You should analyze which of YOUR choices someone else would consider "absurd."

@@Lffewgj I'm just wondering why spending on violins and violin lessons is "absurd" but spending the same amount on golf lessons or tennis lessons or figure skating lessons or sailing lessons (all of which require specialized gear, plus tee/court/rink time) -- why those are not "absurd" too. The reason people react so negatively to it being expensive to learn the violin is just because they weren't aware of that before, and they don't understand the workmanship and experience that goes into making a truly fine violin or bow, or the training that goes into being able to teach someone else how to play it.

It's unusual to spend as much on a bow as one does on the violin. Often people say that one should *budget* about one-third of the price of the violin for the bow. But budgeting and spending are two different things. You might come across a bow that just really adds a lot to your playing, even though it's more than you wanted to spend, and the reverse can be true for the violin.
