The GOAT of open side flankers . Nice to see another Rugby video again.
His role like most 7s was to stick his head in places you know you are going to get hurt and pilfer the ball from the opposing team. The speed of which he could tackle a player, get to his feet and jackal over the ball getting crucial turnovers was immense.
No position in the game of rugby requires a player to put in as much work as an open side flanker. He knew how to play on the edge of the laws and could get away with cheating better than most.

Physical contact sports is in the North American DNA. I remember watching a rugby game with a Canadian buddy and it was the first game he had ever seen and he knew everything about it, even more than me who had been watching rugby my whole life. I told him who I thought the worst player was (you know, one of those ‘invisible men’ Reuben Thorn types) and he said that same guy was the best player. We watched the replay and he pointed out all the little things that player did like clean outs, leading the tackle count, and so on so it was hard to argue. I think the player was Wallaby Rod McCall.

One thing about Richie you may not fully be able to pick out, is when a player is tackled on the ground, both teams can try and go for the ball. This is called a ruck. Without being too technical, Richie was able to either be the tackler or be the first guy to the ball and steal it off the opposition for his team. He was the best at it. And many teams and countries hated him for it because it was such a niché skill. He turned the game for his team many times over his career.

  • @harrymelad942

You are incredibly perceptive and noted a number of attributes that made Richie probably the greatest ever 7, maybe the greatest ever AB, and perhaps the greatest ever rugby player. And I am English and pretty old by the way, so have seen a few play the game and could be partisan. I think Steve Hanson summed it up pretty well when he gave him his 142nd test cap, making him the most capped international rugby player at that time, which is a truly remarkable achievement for a man in his playing position, by saying "He's just an ordinary bloke from Kurow. But by god he can do extraordinary things..." He was an absolute class act in my opinion and rightly deserves all the accolades and plaudits bestowed upon him.

He is one of the best all time loose forwards, particularly around the rucks, where I'd say he was hated by opponents because similar to NBA players like James Harden he always played on the edge of the rule book and studied all of the rule changes to abuse them.

I must say, you have a great feel for the game for a newcomer. Everything that you said about McCaw is spot on. He was relentless on the field. A fair player but he would never give up. A real gentleman also. It is obvious he never enjoyed talking about himself. He would always talk about the team, another player or the opposition.

To give you some perspective the number 7 position is the most physically demanding both in exertion & contact your body is getting smashed all the time in defence & attack Richie played 148 games for the Allblacks 145 for the Crusaders & 34 for Canterbury and he was pretty much at the top of his game throughout his career in such a punishing position not to mention an inspirational leader as well. Truly astounding the brutality he put his body through for the game. God bless him for his courage and resilience the best ever.

Richie McCaw is like the James Bond of Rugby Union. Mr Dependable and a true gentleman.
As a flanker..his job is to constantly harrass the ball/ball carrier. Pretty much follow the ball and tackle anything that moves. To miss a tackle as a flanker is almost sacrilege 😆.
They slow down opponents momentum, support there own ball carriers and constantly attempt to turnover the ball, which everyone is doing, but flankers are masters at it.
You understood what his job was very well😃..you have the sight lol

Richie was primarily a defence god and a turnover king (especially in the first part of his career). Once he took over captaincy of the All Blacks he began to develop his attacking game further and he consequently became the GOAT. In football terms, he’d be a cross between and linebacker and a tight end.
Most capped player of all time.
Highest capped All Blacks captain of all time.
    x2 World Cup champion.
x3 (I think) world player of the year.
He even played the final of the 2011 Work Cup with a broken foot he sustained in the semi final the week before. He refused to tell the team doctors because he was not going to miss the final.
There’s also a lot going on in that video that you probably don’t notice unless you understand rugby. His ability to turn over the opposition ball was second to none and you can see that here. You also see that when he tackles he tries to turn the opponents away from their own team (this is a particular tactic that is used to help the All Blacks win back the ball)

Lumo was actually 6'5" in height and 19 stone (265lbs) in weight. Asides from being in a sport that is nonstop with no breaks in play and made up of 2 X 40 minutes = 80 minutes of actual play, Lumo would need strength to give and receive tackles plus stamina to play for the full 80 minutes were the average distance run by a player is around 7 kilometers (4.4 miles) per game. Lumo could run 100 meters in 10.8 seconds, pretty good for such a big man. When you consider an American Football game actual amount of play is an average of 11 minutes over a 3 hour game so there's 16.3 minutes of inactivity for every actual minute of play whilst rugby is nonstop with most of the players playing nonstop for the full game. An American Footballer whose a corner-back or a wide-receiver covers the most distance on average at 1.9 km's (1.2 miles) whilst the other players run far less often most run just a few hundred yards over 3 hours.
