  • For the second video checking out the New Zealand All Blacks, I'm reacting to Richie McCaw Tribute "Mighty All Black." I actually recorded this the same day as the video on his All Blacks debut (link below).
    I uploaded a reaction to the Wales vs Ireland 6 Nations match in between the two Richie McCaw videos, but as you can tell that video is no longer with us (RIP).
    I'm planning to announce something, as soon as this weekend, about a new addition to this channel. One benefit of it will be a way to deal with videos that get slapped down on RUclips like the Wales vs Ireland one did. I'll have more details later.
    Credit to Rugby Life for putting the original video together.

    McCaw was a terror when it came to the tackle and ruck. He stole so many balls it became frustrating for the opposition. Stealing ball when the opposition is attacking on the front foot is game winning. Its very difficult to do, very few players excel at it. On top of that he played at 100% for 80 mins and I don't recall him ever having a bad game. On top of that he was one hell of a captain and ambassador for the game.
    He wasn't flashy and this highlight real isn't as exiting as many out there. Still, if I had to pick a world team of best players ever to play, he might be the first name I put down.

    Yeah Richie was never a muscle bound god, at least outwardly. In his book he talked about hating weight training, and only did what the S&C coaches made him. His aerobic fitness, however, was the best in the game as long as he played. It was a massive advantage, esp for how he played, to have a bigger engine than anyone else.
    He was never known for try scoring, but he did score a fair few and always showed up right when he was needed, a common theme in his career/play style, and one of those strange things about him that others struggle to emulate. Call it a 6th sense or whatever.
    Yes, 11 white in touch with the ball means lineout to black.
    Richie was a tackling machine, and not just big hits, but as the video shows, crazy cover tackling.
    As for his turnover/breakdown work, Graham Henry, a great ABs coach, who also gave him his provincial break at Canterbury, said of young Richie that "he couldnt run and couldnt pass, but by god he count steal a ball." Obviously, he learned to run and pass pretty damn well, and to do everything pretty damn well, but his ability to slow or steal opposition ball defined his career and made him the greatest player ever.
    Everything that makes him the GOAT made him an absolute nightmare to play against. He was always denying you possession, making spot tackles, working like a machine all 80 minutes. He could manipulate the ref like no other. The man is a legend of the game, and of sport as a whole.

      I'm English but this is spot on, man's the GOAT. Work rate defensively, ability to draw in players to the breakdown and his supernatural stealing ability made him who he is. Greatest player I've ever seen

    • @jamesspencermusic
      @jamesspencermusic 5 лет назад +2

      Trying to deal with him at the break down was like trying to contain a barrel full of angry monkeys. The guy was the best I’ve seen at working out what he could or couldn’t get away with with the ref constantly testing boundaries over the first quarter to work out where he stood and what he could get away with from that point onwards. A master of keeping discipline whilst also flexible enough to play what was in front of him. The guy played right on the edge of what was legal and sometimes seemed to get away with murder but that is due to him being savvy enough to work it out. Sly as a fox with a work rate like no one else. That’s why he is the best there has been.

    You won't get spectacular highlights. He hit every ruck, made every tackle, turning over or slowing down the ball. Doing the dirty work, putting the pressure on.

    One of the things that made Ritchie so amazing was how often he would be a part of the play. During his heyday it wasn't uncommon to see him make a tackle, find his feet, be first in on the ruck, turn over the ball, make a carry, get tackled, leave the new ruck and then make another carry 2-3 passes into the new phase. all within 1 minute. His work rate was obscene and his knowledge of the breakdown (when/where to enter a ruck, when the ball is playable, when the ball is loose, etc.) was next level.
    Honestly it's understandable that quite a few teams out there would try to injure him during a game, regardless of penalties, cards, whatever. Having Ritchie sub off in exchange for the rest of the game being 14v15 was worthwhile a lot of the time.

  • @joeprosho

    what richie is probably best known for is being new zealand captain, winning games, and pushing a lot of break down play to the limits of the rules (and getting away with it)..

    @ 5:20 He can take a hit too.. The most understated commentary I've heard of McCaw. You should watch the video of some of the nastiest foul play against a human being on a rugby battle field. McCaw takes some inhumane punishment from opposition and just gets up and gets the job done. His rugby I.Q was above all and his undying commitment to every facet of the game was inspirational

    • @MarsFKA
      @MarsFKA 4 года назад

      The opposition players who pulled dirty play tactics on him were too dumb to realise that it was never going to put him off his game. He might have spent a few seconds reacting to their cowardice, after which, it was play on. His concentration was total.

    Thats new zealand for you. Its the little things doing it better than everyone else. Consistency is key because by being consistent the less likely you are to make a mistake and mistakes lose games...the all blacks? They dont lose. At least not very often

      @Tremuoso 5 лет назад

      So true. Taking nothing away from NZ (who would even have the gall to do that?) and really not intending this to sound like salty backhanded praise, but it's amazing to me if you really deeply analyse NZs tactics and gameplan, they have some pretty surprising weaknesses and holes in there game that other teams simply would not get away with and would get exploited. They get away with it every single time because they are just SO good at the 'little things', every man from 1-15 on an All Black team just has a deft rugby brain and rugby skills.

    There's no doubt in his day Richie McCaw was the best kiwi no. 7 and at time he was the best in the world. His arch nemesis was George Smith from Australia and they had some great battles. When Richie wasn't number one in the world George Smith was. But now there is only one! Please check out David Pocock highlights, there is no one around nowadays who is as good over the ball as him.

      Pocock is right up there with McCaw - New Zealander speaking, here - and a true 80-minute player. Look at the 2015 RWC Final, when Barrett was running in that last try. Who was the Australian closest to him, when even the Wallabies backs had given up the chase?

    G'day Mate, I've enjoyed taking this journey with you into your discovery of international rugby and look forward to more videos. As for Richie McCaw I highly recommend the most definitive documentary on the defining moments of his career "Richie McCaw - Chasing Great"(2016) which covers the behind the scenes of the 3 Rugby World Cup campaigns he captained the ALL BLACKS in. It's an interesting and engaging insight into the challenges and struggles of professional Rugby. It's available on YT in 2 parts around 45mins each, so probably better to watch in your spare time. For a reaction video though I suggest ALL BLACKS - Best Tries 2012- 2014 which is a fantastic collection of highlights that showcases the skill level of the team.

    Richie McCaw is a god of rugby arguably one of the best ever. Just some of his stats: Most capped Test Player with 148 caps (110 as All Blacks Captain), of which he was victorious in 131. He played 61 game at home in NZ and only lost 2. He has scored 27 tries (the third most tries from a forward in rugby history). He played against 18 different teams and only lost to 4 of them Australia, South Africa, England and France. 3 World rugby player of the year awards and 2 world cups. GAB.

    Definitely not ignorant mate, learning a tough sport to learn very quickly, next few things you should learn are a few ruck rules like the tackler rolling away, having to go through the gate, the tackled player having to release the ball etc. Will help with recognising why Richie was so good at winning penalties in the rucks.

    your commentary is really good now bro!! you know your stuff as much as most rugby fans now :) again i want to point out the subtleties. Richie was known for all that stealing of the ball (or pilfering) and irritate all opposing fans because he blurs the lines between legal and illegal. those awesome quick steals are debatable because he loses his feet straight away, but he steals the ball instantly so it is legal. He is the best there has ever been because he is smart and precise, and as you said just as i was thinking it, always in the right place at the right time.

    Hi IA, awesome reactions which I'm seeing for the very first time and am enjoying going through your catalogue. The reference you make in your initial observation in this video at the start is a thing in Aotearoa (New Zealand) called MANA. You observe Richie the individual, who might not be flashy as such or look particularly grand looking. The point to note with MANA, is he looks determined and steely in resolve. This make other players follow him without question, as this MANA creates respect. He is the greatest All Black Captain we have ever had. I echo a previous commentators reference that he had a broken foot through the entire 2011 World Cup at home. It will stick in my memory forever with the scores at 8-7 to the All Blacks with around 3 minutes to go in the 2011 final, Richie went down injured rubbing his foot furiously with pain. The crowd erupted after what felt like an eternity, when he got to his feet once more. "Com'on boys follow me for last push to win the final!" The guy is a LEGEND!

    For McCaw was the greatest 7 ever played, but as a leader he was peerless. Not many All Blacks get 100+ caps as the quality of the rugby player coming through is very high. To keep himself in such good condition over so many years is remarkable. Very very hard working but also, he has a very high IQ, so was very clever at the breakdown. Remarkable man.

    George North is another name for your Rugby reactions. His strength is superhuman. He once lifted Israel Folau (another fantastic name in the sport) up over his head whilst Folau was in possesion of the ball and carried him like 10 metres back towards the tryline. A highly illegal and dangerous move but still the physical strength required to pick up a 350lb man like a bag of sugar is mindblowing.

    Spot on analysis, dude. Richie isn't known for the flashy stuff (besides this ridiculous steal - ruclips.net/video/quvezmBUVak/видео.html).
    He's legendary because of his relentless drive, immaculate technique, and inhuman endurance. He could last the entire game playing at full tilt in his exhausting position which basically equates to 80 minutes of continuous running, wrestling and burpees. And he does it all while taking huge hits from some of the game's most terrifying athletes.
    Do some All blacks match highlights or watch a game from the 2015 world cup where they were in their best form in their century+ long history.

Few big hits and big carries, but a rugby god when it came to the ruck and tackle area of the game. Always at the right place at the right time. Supremely disruptive and just cut down any momentum your team would start to build up.
    When playing against the All Blacks with McCaw in the squad it always felt like it was 15 men vs 17 men. He was just everywhere and almost always played a good game. He would always be one of the 3 best players on the field on the day; even on the few occasions when the All Blacks or Crusaders lost.
    He transformed play in the ruck area and in order to compete most teams now have at least one player who is selected specifically to try and do what McCaw pioneered.

    A lot of people criticised him and called him a cheat, and yea he did get penaltised a bit, but he was a absolute master at the ruck, stealing the ball and knew how to read the ref, quite often you would see him get penaltised early in a game as he’s was working out how far he could push the laws with the ref!!
    In my opinion he change that part of rugby, don’t think there was anyone before him that could do it like it’s done today with the speed and accuracy like Ritchie.
    The is undoubtedly the best All Black maybe Rugby player ever!! The GOAT!!
    Mind you I am a one eyed Canterbury supporter😉

    The man was just a workhorse. Put an injury depleted NZ on his back in the 2011 WC final played the whole game with a broken foot to help NZ secure it's first WC in 24 years. He was the human epitome of doing the work that doesn't show up on the stat sheet.

    The highlight video really shows off Richie McCaw's 'game intelligence'. His positioning and reading of the game were outstanding. Yes, he did push the boundaries of what could be classed as legal/illegal but the majority of the time he wasn't penalised. That's what was so frustrating as an opposition fan. The speed he would get back on his feet is amazing and he worked his socks off.

    Also this videocast also looks at the future of Rugby, are skilled players being sized out. James Haskell is an ex England player who has some good insights about the intensity of the traing and comparisons with the NFL and how that is better regulated by input from the players. He seemed to turnover at crucial times with the pressure building from the opposition. He definitely changed the expectations for of the number 7. Him and Neil Back did a lot for the position.

    One of the offhand comments you made about him is a common quality in all the best openside flankers (number 7s) in the history of the game - they are in the right place at the right time. Often they aren't the biggest guy on the pitch, or the fastest, or the most naturally skillful, but they see the game differently from everyone else and always seem to be in the right place because of their vision and understanding of the game. Aside from this, they have the characteristics that all good back row (6, 7, and 8) players have, which is being excellent or at least strong at every aspect of the game, be it passing, tackling, running with the ball, stealing the ball, catching kicks and passes, or anything else. Back rows are the link between the forwards and the backs and need to have no real weakness in any area of the game.

    Some of the tackles are hard to understand unless you know what he is trying to do. For instance the wrap tackles, Richie is trying to turn the ball carrier towards his players in order to create a tunrover in the forthcoming ruck. He was known for his turnover ability, toughness and just constant aerobic pace. To be fair, your opinion on him was pretty spot on considering you don't watch alot of rugby.

    You are correct about white 11 being in touch, leading to a black lineout.
    In terms of who gets the ball for the lineout, there is another scenario that can happen. That is, if a part of your body is in touch before you catch the ball, you are considered touch.
    For example, in basketball, if you are out of bounds and touch the ball, the opposition gets possession. However in rugby, if you have one foot in touch and touch the ball, it is considered to be in touch off the last player who touched it before you.
    This can be a very helpful strategy for players trying to catch a kick whilst under pressure near the sideline.

    McCaw always lead from the front, there has hasn't been anyone remotely as revered as a captain like he was, even his worst games, were better than everyone elses best games,he studied every new law months before everyone else. People called him a cheat,i think it's because he was caught offside a hell of a lot, watching him at a break down,99 percent of the time,he was cleaned out of his line, and then penalised, but people only saw that he was offside, not how he came to be offside. And so many tried to take him out,not once did he retaliate, his team mates would in his defence though, thugs will always hate who they can't be. His mere presence on the field, inspired his team.

    One of the things that is missed is how he is positioning the player that he tackles. He is constantly making it difficult for the player on the ground to present the ball in an advantageous way for their own team, increasing the potential for turnovers. As a front row, it’s much harder to clear a ruck when the tackler has got your man completely dominated like in some of these clips.

    Great to see you can appreciate the less flash parts of the game. He was the best at what he did, another thing to mention is how long he played and how he was pretty much always fit throughout his career, I can't remember him having any lengthy injury layoffs.

    Hope this article lends a bit of context to his leadership and character. One thing about Richie apart from his talent on the field is his knack for understanding the ref's intepretation of the laws and play right at the edge and use the law to his advantage. He's been called a cheat numerous times; albeit with admiration.
