    the black ferns are the most dominant female team - they may be third at the moment but they have won 35 of the 56 tournament contested and like the male team are a formidable force

    • @1Ma9iN8tive
      @1Ma9iN8tive 5 месяцев назад +24

      Exactly. The Blackferns have a shorter history than the men but proportionally they out perform the men’s team in almost every statistic in world championship win/loss/draw outcomes. The domination of the women’s team in their discipline is so all pervasive it beggars belief they don’t receive half of the financial support as their male counterparts. As for the bums on seats argument male vs female - the last women’s Rugby World Cup was proof that their audience is on a par with the men’s game internationally.

      @@1Ma9iN8tive not sure why you've made this a men vs women thing. The Black Ferns are a dominant force and are so talented WITHIN their league. Don't sit there and try to say they out perform the All Blacks because that is just lunacy, it might be the same sport but its a completely different game.
      They also do not bring anywhere close to the numbers consistently that the mens league does. It is improving which is amazing, as this will steadily start increasing what they get paid.

    The reason why the All Blacks received their name, wasn’t due to the Jersey colour (it wasn’t originally black), but due to a UK newspaper misprint, that was meant to say that the team played like ‘All Backs’ (ie: fast and skillful). The name stuck, apparently.

    • @newremote
      @newremote 5 месяцев назад +8

      No. The name All Blacks existed before the 1905 UK and world tour and was used by the newspaper report of the very first match of that tour. After NZ beat Devon 55-4, the local newspaper wrote: "The All Blacks, as they are styled by reason of their sable and unrelieved costume… etc". In other words, NZ wore an all black uniform and that was their name's origin. The "all backs" story has long been discredited and there has never been a newspaper report found that matches that myth, and it would have been too late anyway.

    What must also be remembered is the earlier All Blacks were all working men, they were not classified as professionals as they are with today's All Blacks, nor were they paid or compensated as the All Blacks of today. The diversity of available sports has changed the input to rugby. In my G.Grandad's and Grandad's Day, there were only 2 options of winter sports, rugby, more rugby and soccer (football), girls did not play men's sports, so there is a decrease on entrants, but the pool the selectors now raw from are already the cream of the crop. The All Blacks are the best and any loss is considered as a learning experience not a pity party, albeit us supporters take a loss to heart, well we all do in reality, but move on and learn.

    Plus the only country that has had actually defended their title well is the All blacks. Sure SA has 1 more wc than New Zealand for now but they never have a rein of absolute dominance in the 4 years between world cups like the Abs have.

    New Zealand's Rugby culture is the biggest reason. We have babies and toddlers running around with a rugby ball. All NZ kids at some point, are playing Rugby in some form ... Union, League, Rippa, Touch, etc. That's why they call it GRASS ROOTS RUGBY. You'd be far stretched to find any born and bred Kiwi who has NEVER played some Rugby. It's the Country's number 1 game. So the type of play that the All Blacks is famous for (running the ball, trick passes, smart plays, quick phases of play, etc) and the rest of the World are in awe of ... is something that's instinctive to most Kiwis.
    Also, you don't NEED a bunch of money to play a casual game of Rugby. Pfft ... we used to play it in a backyard with a shoe (someone lost our ball). Hell ... one time we played it at High School in our quad ... a concrete area. Dumbest thing we ever need. Everyone lost some skin that day.
    These are the mistakes that a lot of the big Countries (especially the Northern Hemisphere) overlook. They think they can dominate Rugby because their population is a hundred times more and they have multi MILLIONS of dollars to spend. In those Countries, Rugby is NOT the number 1 sport. For example, the Rugby Nations in the Northern hemisphere have BILLIONS to spend on their Rugby, their Clubs, their players, their franchises, etc. Yet for all their wealth, the Rugby World Cup has only gone to the Northern Hemisphere ONCE ever.

    One issue in many smaller centers of New Zealand is where schools leavers from the age of 16, have nowhere to play. Often, there aren't competitions that cater for U18 and U20/21 and the step up to mens grades are too great. As a result,we're losing too many from the sport.

    I really liked this video. As you know now, we do have a female team, and they are formidable! Our women's Rugby Sevens team just won Gold at this year's Olympics! Yessss!🤩👏
    And despite what some people are saying in the comments, our equivalent to American High Schools is either called a High School or a College but are basically the same thing.
    Wellington, the NZ capital, has 1 Highschool and 12 Colleges altogether, including RONGOTAI, one of the schools in the 2015 All Blacks team photo (13:52). 'FRANCIS DOUGLAS' is short for Francis Douglas Memorial College, so yeah, we have both. I don't know why, we just do, and you can just about guarantee that they'll have a First XV - a team of the best 15 rugby players that represent the school at tournaments, the same way the All Blacks First XV, represent New Zealand.

    Some background info about rugby:
    - Rugby Union only went professional in 1995. Before that it was an amateur game.
    - The first rugby world cup was in 1987.
    - Before that national teams would 'tour' in the summer. Before international flights this meant sailing to the other side of the world which took weeks and these tours would last several months staring with local teams and then finishing in a series of International Tests against the home nations international team.
    The most famous Touring side are the British & Irish Lions. The Lions are made up of the best players from England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. Every 4 years they tour either South Africa, New Zealand or Australia. The next tour is in 2025 to Australia.
    Many players rate playing in a Lions Test series as the high point of their career, even above the world cup.
    For the British and Irish players this is because:
    - The history of the Lions and the prestige of being a British Lion. Especially those that win a test series.
    - It only happens ever 4 years.
    - To get into the squad, let alone the test team you have to be the best not just in your own country, but out of all the home nations.
    - All the advantages are with the home team. The Lions are a scratch team of talented players who only have a short time to develop a style of play and get to know each other, playing away against one of the best sides in the world, who in contrast have had years to develop their playing style and become familiar with their team mates.
    - All the above mean winning a Test serise is the ultimate challenge for British and Irish players, arguably tougher than winning a World Cup.
    For the Spring Boks, All Blacks and Aussies it's equally as big a deal because:
    - The history of the Lions and the rivalry with their mother country.
    - For them a Lions test series only happens once every 12 years, usually just once in their career.
    Lions tours are at least as big a deal as the World Cup and have a much longer history.
    Two legendary Lions tours are the 1971 Lions tour to NZ and the 1974 Lions tour of SA.
    There's a brilliant documentary on the latter here:
    ruclips.net/video/OqE8GH4IMK0/видео.html
    Another very good documentary series is 'Living with the Lions' from the 1997 tour to SA.
    ruclips.net/video/35gk6PX1-0U/видео.html
    The 2009 Second test vs the Spring Boks is famous for being perhaps the hardest match since the game went professional and so full on that many of the players ended up being taken to hospital afterwards:

    School Rugby matches get... chaotic pretty fast. Not the game itself mind, but the schools, it gets passionate. Fights even break out cause of it depending on the schools playing, and if they're rivals or not.
    Also it's not like we're intentionally making larger pools of talent by getting children into it ASAP, most kids actually want to play, it's just a really big sport for us here, literally akin to Americans with the NFL

    I really liked it, I know the male commentator Tony he’s a really smart guy and I have a close friend whos Dad was an All Black and her great grandfather was in the Invincibles, her father got a scholarship to kings College from. Taranaki and that is how a lot of the private schools do it, they create scholarships for young players to come from the farming regional areas to play for their first 15 and that’s why they end up with 5 schools dominating in Auckland one is a public school but in the richest zone Auckland Grammar School, Kings College, St Kentigerns, Sacred Heart, and Wesley College I think are the group mainly. I used to raise money professionally at one of the schools and the old boys will sponsor students out of zone all the time.

    It was invented after a guy called William Webb Ellis got frustrated in a soccer match and grabbed the ball and started running. That's why the rugby world cup is still named The William Webb Ellis cup .

    • @newremote
      @newremote 5 месяцев назад +1

      That's a long discredited myth. Handling the ball was part of football at Rugby School for decades before the English Football Association (where soccer comes from) was formed in 1863. There is no evidence that Ellis played any special part in the increasing popularity of running with the ball, which was legal but discouraged. The style became more popular at Rugby in the 1830s, long after Ellis had left. The World Cup was named in line with the myth, but no serious rugby historian accepts the story.

    The Aus vs Nz comparison overlooks some massive facts. There are two types of rugby, Rugby Union and Rugby League. This video only looks at Rugby League. In Aus, Rugby League is the dominant sport, like 3-4 times the size of Rugby Union by participant numbers, and strangely enough the Aus have a dominant record against Nz in that. Add to that the fact Australian Rules Football is far more popular than both rugby codes, and draws a lot of the athletic talent, and you start to get a picture of why Nz typically beats Aus in Rugby.
    It kind of like comparing Brazil to USA in soccer.

    I like the style - also NZ All Blacks will climb again but as always that takes time (It certainly doesn't help that we've put our players all over the world in the Win / Loss stats but now we are having to figure out ways to be even better than we were when we won ALL the time ... something of a healthy thing I suggest.) Although it may not seam like it the new coach is actually a good thing - Fozzy needed to step back and look at another route but just couldn't - NEXT WORLD CUP IS Razor's!!!! In New Zealand Rugby is big because it is a past time as well as a sport & it is common for a group of people to play a game at social events but there have been players that are legends if not Gods in the sport that kids inspire to be, for me it was Sir Colin Meads (Sir is an official title for being appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for services to rugby.) & he is well worth looking up as a reaction video as is another NZ legendary player Jonah Lomu.

    • @user-uy6uc5ey5q
      @user-uy6uc5ey5q 5 месяцев назад

      MBEs never came with a 'Sir" title ie they weren't/aren't knighthoods - you're simply styled you name followed by the letters, like John Smith MBE.
      Meads got the knighthood because he got a Distinguished Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit -CNZM, from 2001 (30 yrs after got the MBE) and when the Key govt brought back knighthoods in 2009 he was eligible to get it converted to a Knight Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit KNZM which he opted to take but he didn't have to.
      Always love when people rush to tell about titles and they have pretty zero knowledge about actual facts.

    The commentary has at least one error. The term “test match” or just “Test” (quite often capitalised) refers to matches between two countries (i.e. NZ v say Wales, or England - teams made up of players from many different clubs). The “Invincibles” tour of 1924-25 comprised 32 matches but 28 of these were against club teams. The 4 test matches (v Ireland, England, Wales & France) were against much tougher opposition.

For example Australia is also a great rugby playing nation but the difference is that Australia has a much wider appreciation for a broader range of different sports and other activities.
