I used to be a strictly weight lifting and walking girly, but started to build up my running endurance the last 3 months and WOW. I love it. My first goal is to run a 5K without stopping (~ 30min). I’m not fast at all but idc, I love seeing the progress in my runs and especially in my health. My RHR dropped nearly 10 BPM since I started running. I feel so good.

I cant go more than 5km without chaffing. i wish i could wear the super short flowy shorts Keltie wears but no antichaff cream/talcum powder etc saves me. I've been running since... I think I was 12? Making it almost 20 years of running! And honestly, running transformed my life.
I started out as a chubbier kid who just wanted to up her fitness, so took up running one summer... came back to school pretty fit, joined the school track & field club, then did my first 10K race!
Since I graduated high school, I've moved between 5-6 countries/cities, and running has always been the one constant thing in my life. Whenever I'd move to a new city, I'd use running to explore the area, and stay fit.
Running for me was an opportunity to unwind, to get time for myself, to clear my head from thoughts... or the opposite, to figure out answers to big questions.
Since moving to Finland 2 years ago, I started joining more races, and hitting personal bests in my 5k, 10k, and now, more recently I ran my first half marathon race, finishing in under 2 hours!
Running is beautiful, because it's brought both discipline and a lot of freedom into my life. It's awesome to see a resurgence in interest for running, and I'm excited for all the people finding running for themselves!

It’s SOOO important that you’re talking about the fact that running isn’t for weight loss. Running is a high intensity sport and hormonally for a lot of women it can actually put you back in your weight loss journey. For me, it’s all about my mental health - I LOVE running but it gives me hives and causes me to retain weight as compared to walking or low-intensity exercise. I’m not willing to trade it but I’m trying to figure out ways to keep it in my routine without jeopardizing my health journey. Thanks Keltie 🙏

Running tip: always encourage those around you! Even if you are faster, or feeling fresher. Give a thumbs up, tell the person who is struggling that “you look strong! Keep it up!” It’s amazing how much that helps them and keeps the community loving and strong together.

I’m a 30 year old male who relatively recently got into running after years of weight training.
I never focused on cardio and instead just did it as an afterthought. Over the past few months I’ve been spending less time in the gym and more time running.
The mental benefits and sense of freedom that a run gives are second to none. Maybe it’s just the change in routine, but I think there is more to it than this.
It has helped me become more toned, improved my mental health and made me fall in love with training again, instead of just doing it for routines sake.
I’m now able to regularly run 10K and have signed up to my first official 10K event in June.
This is a great video. Keep up the content. Very informative whether male or female.

The weight issue is spot on - all the signals running sends to your body are counter to weight loss. There's also a flip side - trying to lose weight through a nutrition plan *while-at-the-same-time* trying to achieve running performance goals is just a recipe for contradictory messaging - you will not fuel properly and you'll just feel terrible and exhausted. I've learned the hard way that you have to choose one or the other at a time. For myself, moving from 10km races to half marathons is going to require some weight loss, which can only be achieved by lowering my running performance goals for the six months that I'm giving myself to lose the weight, and then I'll start half marathon training again. I'm still running 3x a week, I am just not pushing myself to achieve unrealistic speed or distance goals.

Hey Keltie, this has ben super helpful and transparent for me as someone returning to running after a long stint off. I used to run lots and did a couple of 10ks but haven't done any training or events for 5 years. Fast forward to now I'm going through a bit of a rough patch and signed myself up to a 10k to give me a goal to focus on. I will add, that i have a mild form of cerebral palsy so training has looked totally different to what you'd typically imagine a runner to do ( fewer long runs, more mobility etc.). Your videos have been like a check point every week regardless of the subject to think about how to approach my fitness and running goals.
I especially appreciate that you don't demonise peoples food choices for training ( candy before a run lol) and in short appear more 'real talk' than most influencers. My 10k is this Saturday so maybe I'll update here or on this weeks video how I got on?

I like to go on a run before we go out to dinner somewhere, because it makes me soooo hungry, then I can have a starter, a big dinner (and a few bites of whatever my boyfriend ordered) and dessert, and still feel physically really good after devouring a small mountain of food.

This is a great video and as someone who’s currently starting to enjoy running once a week ( I play club sports in Europe so I only do one session in the on season) I would like to give some recommendations. I am more curvy than Keltie so if you have thicker thighs you might like it: the lulu align 10/15 inch shorts, the sit perfectly for me, don’t ride up and reduce cheffing. Also the high impact energy bra from lulu (adjustable) is so great, you’re girls will not move (which I like). Invest in a stick that reduces cheffing and put that on every where: where you’re bra straps are, on you’re thighs, under arms, in the elbows (this one is a game changer for me) etc. Third: I just recently got a running vest and love it, I usually cannot go further than 5k as I was getting so thirsty and got headaches. Get a running vest you can put water in, you’re key, some cash, you’re phone… I love it.
I am also starting to do the Natasha Oceane hybrid program during my off season (it’s not the full 12 weeks but I’ll do it for eight). I like it a lot as you can pick what you’re goal is, if you want to do more weights or running and she includes running specific exercises that also help me with my club sport.

The section on weight loss/ weight gain was beautifully done Keltie. Everyone who would like to begin running should listen to this advice. I have been running for many years now, and I definitely eat so I can run and that normally means eating super clean to maintain a comfortable running weight and enough to get energy and nutrients but not to end up with an upset stomach after longer runs or speed workouts. Thanks for the video.

I remember when I was training for my first half marathon, a friend invited me to a "Eat everything out of our Fridge" Party because they were moving. I was in my longer mileage by then and I respectfully declined because A) I didn't know what she had in her fridge. B) I didn't want to risk a bathroom emergency during my long run. My friend kept pushing saying, "Oh you will just burn everything off." I said, "That's not how it works."

A couple of the races even had shots of bayou rum at water stations you can choose to have or not. So 1000% can understand the beauty which is that first taste of the bubbles after a run! Fantastic information as always and currently petting my puppers now!!!

I love running. I run about 14 miles a week and I Already have run a 10k and a 5k this year! I love this video ( although a little long) you shed light on something so important… the fact that a run doesn’t always need to be your best, your hardest, or a PR. I cannot tell you the last time I didn’t run with my watch.. you got me thinking I may need to bring back the reason I fell in love with running… THE FREEDOM however lately I’ve created so many “musts” and obsessions around my runs I think I stole my own freedom away
    Thank you for this reminder!!!

As someone who has run fairly consistently since I was 15 (I’m now 40), and been both petite/small breasted and heavy and large breasted(178 lbs after giving birth and I’m 5’4”), I have some experience and input on running heavy, boob bounce as well as running too much with not enough muscle tone/weight lifting.
First off: the best “sports bra” for big Ol’ boobies is not one but 2 bras. Wear a comfortable full coverage regular 2 cup bra and a fitted but comfortable full coverage wide strap sports bra over it (extra points for one that zips in the front so you don’t have to strain your neck putting it on). The sports bra will hold the cups in place and the cups will hold the boobies in place without bounce or suffocation. Took many years for me to figure that out. They tried to make built in combo units at VS back in the day, don’t know if they still do, but they sucked and they were too tight or too loose and the wires pinched. Go the 2 bra route. More laundry, less pain, less bounce, more air and ease of breathing.
Second: About heaviness: I want just heavy - I have heavy friends that run and nothing bounces - they’re solid. When I was heavy, I would take a few steps into running, and all my flesh would lift up and go airborne and then come crashing down and slam into the earth, bounce back up and hit me in the face. It was not just uncomfortable, but quite painful and embarrassing. Thankfully I was single and in no hurry or pressure to be gorgeous, so I laughed about it and gave myself grace and took it slow. I realized I needed the equivalent of an entire body bra. I got some high wasted breathable spanx-style running pants, I wore multiple bras and a fitted running tank with a built in bra over my double brai mentioned earlier. Not super comfortable, but better my whole body being one huge bouncing boob. I also couldn’t run as far because it felt so heavy, so I didn’t haven’t to wear it long. I’d run the equivalent of two of my neighbors yards, probably like 100 meters, and then walk. Then I’d do it again. Maybe five times, turn around and walk home. Then I’d go a little farther the next week. I never pressured myself to hurry and lose weight so it took about 18 months too get back down to 120lbs, and that’s okay. The important part was enjoying it enough to keep doing it, good music, my sister would go with me and we would laugh, feeling healthy and patient.
Lastly, I’m tiny, bony, and 40 now. If I try to just get back into running without a warmup phase and intermixing resistance training, everything doesn’t just hurt, and straight up stops working. Please, ladies, even if it’s just twice a week, lift some weights, core workouts like Pilates, and do some lunges and deadlifts and overhead presses or modified pushups and dips. Your bones and joints will thank you. Your back and neck absolutely cannot take constant pummeling and jarring impact without some bracing muscle to girdle/corset them in place, and your knees and ankles and hips will straight up quit. Love your bodies, love yourselves!

But since I started to invest the extra time to get out of the city into nature its a blast every week! 1-2h into nature, a nice 2-3h roundtrip (komot) somewhere with trees, fields, small mountains,... and then 1-2h back. Game changer.. I believe you call it trail running 😅❤

i LOVED this video keltie!! I currently do boxing/HIIT training and started my running journey in beginning of March of this year. I was slowly upping my mileage over the last two months (my highest was 5.5 miles, which was crazy to accomplish as someone who hasn't run consistently for years) and started seeing improvements on my speed and pace which was super exciting. But, one day I don't think I stretched enough, tried some new shoes, and ultimately injured myself on the back of my left knee. I'm a little nervous to get back into running after getting that injury but I'm taking this video as a sign to get back to it! This was a really helpful video and will definitely use it going forward, hoping to sign up for my first 10k in the coming months 😊

I get more out of my workouts when I'm not on a treadmill (looking at numbers and finding a logical stopping point) but when I'm running on a track or something. I focus on how I feel, start/stop running in the shade, walk half a lap and run half a lap, etc. With exercise induced asthma, running hasn't been a problem with the run half walk half a lap option.
Podcasts or music is a non-negotiable. It depends on the day and activity.

I'm so glad that you discussed that some sports are weight dependent AND that sometimes it's more of a chicken/egg type situation.
I'm a rock climber and have been climbing for the last two years. I've lost a ton of weight in the last year and everyone thinks it's because I was climbing and "working out" but in reality my first year I spent climbing the hardest I've ever climbed (in terms of effort) and in the last year I've started slowly trying to lose weight FOR CLIMBING. About 2 pounds a month cause I like food way too much to go faster than that and be successful. Everyone thinks I'm losing weight because of climbing but the truth is I'm motivated to lose weight to climb harder. This is a super slippery slope in the climbing community and EDs are somewhat prevalent in the sport BUT I like to think that I'm doing it slow and steady (and I had some weight to lose to begin with)
But I truly went a year of doing my sport without losing a pound. I think climbing is not a great sport for trying to lose weight, besides the fact that it motivated me to do so but everyone not involved wants me to share the secret of my weight loss when there is no secret lol

I ran my first 5K last weekend - it was part of a big marathon weekend here, so lots of other runners. It was a blast, though I started way too fast (I told myself not to do it, but it happened anyway). I have another 5K on July 4th, a 7K end of August, and a 10K in November. I like being signed up for races, so I have goals to work towards and things to look forward to. I started running as a way to better maintain my weight and hopefully lose some, but fell in love with it. I now just run for its own sake. I've also found my body vastly prefers not running on back to back days - every other day works much better for me.

For large chested women you need to get a sports bra that comes in different cup sizes. I've fluctuated from a 32D to a 32I cup (US sizes), when I get to about a G cup or so I either need to wear 2 unsupportive 'normal' sports bras or one that has cups. If I'm wearing the sports bra with proper cups, no pain. If I double up on the 'normal' sports bras then I still get some pain, but not as bad as single sports bra (that worked fine for me as an F cup).

As a new “runner”, I walk a lot 😂, I’ve been using my heart rate as a progress motivator instead of by distance or time. I like to see how long in TOTAL my heart rate stays in zones 2-4 during my runs. My goal is never zone 5 if I hit zone 5 that’s great but I never aim it. I found watching the total length of times increase in those zones super motivating it shows me that even if I’m not at x distance, time, etc. my body & cardiovascular system are improving and getting stronger. I also felt like those improvements showed fairly immediately too.

I am a total newbie in running and so far I can agree with Keltie about running shoes. Please don’t buy shoes just based on the looks. Go to the running specific store and get a proffesional, not just a sales assistant, to help you decide. I wanted to ge Hoka Bondi, but went to a running store and tried bunch of shoes on that could match my needs (i didn’t get a foot asessment). As the guy said, a new runner needs a work horse shoe to get a bunch of kilometers in, they need to be comfortable for longer periods of time. Not the ones that look good or race shoes that have plates in them, but a shoe that you will be happy to put on and run consistently. After trying on some 10 pairs I ended up with Asics Kayano, supportive yet cushioned, with space for my big toe. If I bought some random shoes off the internet, i’d give up on running after the first kilometer.

I do have a few questions.
    1. What is your Strava user name? I love using Strava and would love to follow you.
    2. Can you upload your TikTok running shoe video on RUclips? I do not have TikTok and would love to know your opinion on shoes in more detail.
    3. Do you have any RUclips channels you suggest we check out for running form? or do you have suggestions on how to work on your form? I feel as though my running form is more like small dragging steps or I am planting my feet incorrectly because I get shin splints or my calves lock up. (I do make sure to drink electrolytes and fuel properly so I think its more my form and not nutrition.)
    4. Stretching or recovery video more detailed - would love to see how you recover or stretch after your runs.
Thank you again I love your videos and I LOVE how you share other resources and research you have found.

I love to run with my friends and they usually run sooo fast, like really fast but are okay to slow down for me and then they are surprised that they actually enjoyed it? Did not need to stop completely to just breath? Don't feel like their legs are giving out... Just it's valid to run slowly and enjoy it. As you said: put the ego aside
