@@WalkerRileyMC I think person B you talking about is only saying that the one scene with the fire was shot in b&w but in the comments she also mentions that the rest of the movie was shot in color.
I worked on "Pleasantville". The burning tree scene are all shot in b&w. We had a poly over the fence and, with proprietary software, then pulled out yellow on one luminance level. In the long shots the yellow on the house was done the same. The tree was done the same way with and more complicated poly over the fire a a little smoke and several different luminance levels pulled in different intensities of that same yellow and one one level slight red which you see better in the scene where Tony walks out the door. In that shot there is a poly on his shirt that has the yellow pulled out more subtly. You would be surprised how many plots are in these shots with little things of yellow are pulled. The effect is supposed to be the fire is the only thing in color, but the color does reflect off of the b&w world. They didn't want a lot of oranges or reds just that hint of red and different intensities of yellow

TLAbd I see what you’re getting at, but if them saying “This is the worst VFX I’ve ever seen,” and the like isn’t already landing them in hot water, then a tutorial can’t be much worse. Also, most of the time they’re pretty fair in saying that most of the issues to be had with any given scene/movie can be boiled down to time, money, or technology constraints. They’re never saying “Your work is bad you dumb idiot, I can do it better!”
its especially remarkable because they didnt had computers or any software at the time. they had to do so much tricks to make it work, thats why it is so amazing and as we can see still holds up today
They only made like 5 of these VFX react videos guys. It's on one of the first ones. There wasn't much covered other than them showing how they made it look like a tiger was in the boat.
If I can actually help answer that. I work in the games and film animation industry as an animator. All it's truly done is just make the bad stuff worse, and seeing the actual amazing skill and professional qualities of the really talented and hardworkers work be more amazing as I can understand what it takes to make that stuff so good. It's a type of insight where you understand the work, and often why things aren't great, and why some things are amazing.

That Forrest Gump clip is _excellent_ with Lt.Dan swinging his legs "through" the coffee table. It's a shame they missed the shadow of his actual legs passing through it, but still excellently done for the time.
The 2011 version actually prepared a shocking amount of really excellent practical effects, but then chose to replace or paint over them in post with CGI
I think it’s super cool that when Bonecrusher crashes through the bus, some of the flames stick to him afterwards and slowly go out as he keeps running. It really feels like he was affected by the explosion as opposed to just being there for it.
Honestly, as much as I hate the Bayformer movies, the CGI is gorgeous. I mean look at it. 2007 movie and it looks so good. Edit: is it just me, or, in that Forest Gump, scene you can actually see the shadow of that guy's legs when he turns around?
@@Wade_Fucking_Wilson Yes but also no??? I mean action is (as far as Bayformers go) basically the only thing enjoyable, and even then it's sometimes kinda hard to follow. On the topic of the blue makeup trick, this technique predates cinema, it was used for the first time in theatre in the 1880-1890s in theatre productions of 'Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde' where he transforms on stage with special gas lamps illuminating him (not color projection as he interacted with other people on stage). This was the first time 'transformation' was conceptually something people encountered. People had a hard time understanding what was going on, but no worries they were making crazy money with their production. But it blew people's minds much so that during the period that the actor was arrested and tried for a number of incredibly gruesome murders, nobody could believe that someone could just transform from a normal man to something diabolic as he did.
Yes!! The Mummy Returns and the CGI scorpion. Shocking! And since you mentioned it, 2001: A Space Odyssey looks incredible even for today's standards, especiallythe shots in space. Would be nice to hear about that.
@Gōdon Gurando Many of the gravity effects come from building sets in a giant rotating wheel/tube. Other scenes were faked in a smaller scale manner: The floating pen in the shuttle was stuck to a sheet of glass and then plucked off the glass. It was all done so masterfully.

@@DanteDevonshire That stylization works for the cartoony graphics in the games, but it looks horrible in live action. The new Disney live-action remakes have the same problem. Michael Bay: Hated for being bland and making "terrible" movies.
Also Michael Bay: Has best idea for making good CGI.
The irony.
Micheal Bay is underrated.
He is a good director with an amazing eye for cinematography and special effects.
Sadly he is a mediocre storyteller.
Like Snyder, he's a visually stunning director. But unlike Whedon or the Russos, they can't create a great character-driven stories.
@@chickennugget9254 But he has multiple times.
@@chickennugget9254 I'd argue that he can, but he needs a very good storywriter. The Rock is an example of that.
And unlike Snyder, AFAIK, Bay doesn't write his own movies or pretends that they are some story masterpieces.
Please do FIXING bad VFX shots!!! That would be so cool
[EDIT] THANK YOU for liking so the Corridor crew sees!!!
Oof im not to sure about this. While i do agree that its educational, its crossing to the "i can do your job better than you" territory. Criticizing something is one thing, going "heres how you shouldve done it" is different thing entirely. Unless corridor is ready for the drama that follows from the filmmaking community
YES!
OMGAWD YES
TLAbd I see what you’re getting at, but if them saying “This is the worst VFX I’ve ever seen,” and the like isn’t already landing them in hot water, then a tutorial can’t be much worse. Also, most of the time they’re pretty fair in saying that most of the issues to be had with any given scene/movie can be boiled down to time, money, or technology constraints. They’re never saying “Your work is bad you dumb idiot, I can do it better!”
@@tlabd9582 You're overthinking it. It'd just be a fun exercise.

That 1937 film's effect was absolutely brilliant. I did a double-take right here in my chair, and I could not believe it was really made in the 30s.
its especially remarkable because they didnt had computers or any software at the time. they had to do so much tricks to make it work, thats why it is so amazing and as we can see still holds up today
“What an effe- uuugh! What an effe-uuugh!!! What an effective shot though.”

As a VFX graduate, knowing how this stuff is done and looking out for the bad stuff ruins movies. It's good fun lol
You just get slightly buzzed enough to not care about the bad shots, haha.
If I can actually help answer that. I work in the games and film animation industry as an animator. A big joke from during school was that we would be ruined because of all this knowledge of the dumb magic that happens. Honestly it's not like that for me.

*Finally some expert confirmation that the first transformers flick had great realistic CGI.* *Hell in my perspective the first one beats all the others in story, acting, lovable characters, character development, and CGI.* *The action wasnt too much or too little.*
Well the cgi was amazing but "story, acting, lovable characters and character development" were non-existing
The third one had some solid CGI but it was missing everything else that made the first one durable.
For me, the first Transformers was the first movie ever where I felt CGI had gone photorealistic. I was and still am at awe at what they were able to achieve in 2007.
Hell, movies today still don't look as good.
@Nagaraj Veer I don't think anyone serious ever criticized Bay from a technical aspect. I mean I think a lot of his aesthetic choices make no sense from a storytelling perspective, but the CGI in his films is always top notch.
I dunno, Bay reusing shots from Pearl Harbor in Xformers was really dodgy.

The 2011 version actually prepared a shocking amount of really excellent practical effects, but then chose to replace or paint over them in post with CGI
5:20 Wren: So For this scene they actually put a mocap suit on the bear and had him kill someone!

Unicron the Chaos bringer Because it’s the only thing they focus on lmao
@@Wade_Fucking_Wilson Yes but also no??? I mean action is (as far as Bayformers go) basically the only thing enjoyable, and even then it's sometimes kinda hard to follow.
On the other hand, it tries to have story and characters, but every single movie, except the first one maybe, failed horribly at that.
So, in conclusion, a collection of just action and CGI shots from Bayformers would be ideal

- Best and worst video game effects
My vote will always, always go to Blade Runner for best practical effects. I watched it for the first time in the early 00s and it blew me away with it's miniatures work.
12:58 Twilight Zone used this same effect in The Howling Man episode but it wasn’t a filter, they used green and red colored lights on the actor. I think dimming lights gives a smoother transition effect than switching filters on the lens would.

@@matman000000 Because WoW looks exactly like that ôo I don't understand the complaints regarding that movie. The cut down the lore, yes, but I think it is impossible to pack lore out of hundreds of gaming time into a two hour movie. The costumes, the broad shoulders, the laughable tiny heads in comparison to those bulged muscle bodys... nothing but accurate (I actually often roll my eyes when I start WoW after some pauses and look at those cringey body measurements and those larpy amour. ^^' But all together that is part of WoWs charm and they packed that shit into the movie wonderfully. @@DanteDevonshire That stylization works for the cartoony graphics in the games, but it looks horrible in live action. The new Disney live-action remakes have the same problem.
