What do you think of this type of store. With no main counter to purchase items from. Simple grab what you want, and pay at a self-service check out. Would this work where you live n the world? Is this the future of convenience stores around the world?

Would never work in the US because of theft. I love the concept though. Instead of putting all that stuff in vending machines they just keep some shelves and fridges stocked up. I also love the seating area upstairs so you can just chill out and have your food/drink time and then go on with your day. The shop is an awesome fusion of convenience and small cafe vibe.

They had all the best stuff and they could afford it all! But then you look at what the american bloggers publish today and it is like they live in some criminal gang driven open market section of 1990s Moscow. How was it even possible to go down from the best place in the world to a stereotypical shithole in such a short amount of time is beyound my understanding.

I have been quite impressed with the concept of providing people with a “microwave” at supermarkets- which Russell has shown us In Moscow!
Commenting from London: I don’t think I’ve seen anything like this in the UK … whether it’s the microwaves or this life market concept! But it’s definitely appealing!
What is interesting is that this very modern and forward thinking idea is in Ekaterinburg and not Moscow or st Petersburg where you would “naturally” expect innovation!
It just goes to show how variable Russian cities are, and how they all try to carve their own identities despite being quite far from Moscow and St P!
    Thanks for showing us!

This concept has been around for a long time. Even 20 years ago, when buying food in some regular stores, you could heat it up in a microwave. This increased sales. My city has a population of about 60 thousand. Now microwaves can be found everywhere where ready-made food is sold and there are places to eat. It doesn't depend on the city, it can be in the village. It depends on demand. There is a client - there is a service. (google translate)

One thing I noticed is, there's plastic everywhere. Here in Aus most packaging is now paper or cardboard, it has changed A LOT over the last 3-4 years. I am not just talking cardboard food bowls or coffee cups or paper straws but computers and TV packaging. Also, reusable coffee cups like my glass KeepCup that gets me ¢50 discount at my local coffee shop in Melbourne - I haven't bought a disposable cup in years (and saved a few hundreds of them, if you think about it). Interestingly, in Soviet times, everyday products almost never had plastic packaging. For example, a seller would simply wrap a piece of sausage or butter in wrapping paper. And milk / sour cream bottles were regularly reused for a second or third time. When the new times of capitalism arrived, the plastic packaging came from the West in huge quantities. Ecological Soviet methods began to be considered backward and anachronistic, inconvenient for customers.

It is a completely self-service store where you pick the instant ramen noodle and toppings, then cook it on the spot, and also have some sides and drinks (just like in South Korea).

To me it seems like fast food, but you must remember any processed food you heat up in a microwave is food without proper nutrition. Processed food in the US is so so bad for a human being to eat without the proper nutrition and many disgusting chemicals. Take the food packages and research all the ingredients to figure out whether it is really nutritious or a deception. Interesting you filmed this eatery. In the UK the incidence of shop lifting has soared since supermarkets introduced self service cashier points were installed so much so that many have now erected one way barriers. Some others have also taken them out altogether.
Personally I want to be served by a human being. Also the number of times there is an issue with a scanned item on self service such that you have to call an assistant. You also need an assistant to do an age check when buying items such as alcohol.
It also seems that very few self service points accept cash.
In summary the self checkouts get a thumbs down from me.

The only benefit to these stores are for those who want to get a meal for free and those who fear people. That said it would be popular for the health food, if it indeed has healthy food. Either way, if a store does not pay someone to take my money, they don't get my money, I walk out empty handed. If a store is to cheap to pay a cashier...forget it!
