- In today's video we're going to be looking at the iconic Formula-1 Tag Heuer which was released in 1986 when the Tag Heuer was formed. Even thought its name refers to F1 racing, this is a Dive watch with 200m water resistance.

wow this is the best condition of this model I have seen!
I have one in this condition how much would it be worth?
I bought this watch in 1987 in Toronto, Canada for around 400 if I remember correctly. It was alot of money for me. I loved this watch. My wife still wears it to this day. I have a Tag Heuer F1 Chronograph 2017 but I think my wife's watch is still magic.
"Not very expensive"? I beg to disagree. Back in highschool, we couldn't even afford a tag. I wore 1 Swatch watch from highschool, college, up to the end of law school. After I passed the bar exams, my parents gave me a Tag Heuer automatic Aquaracer. I wore it daily for 12 years. It still works great.
Quite right. Even Swatch was much more expensive and I remember the affordable watches were brands like Casio. Btw, Great story. The reissue of the Heuer Chronograph in 1996 was a milestone in the return to mechanical movements for Tag and Swiss watches at large. Tag and Swatch saved the bacon of the swiss watch industry.
Thanks. Great video.
I have this exact watch which my brother who has since passed away bought for me over 20 years ago. It has been sat in my drawer for years but I have just had a new battery fitted and will start wearing it again. Didn't even know it was the first Tag Heuer watch! 👍
Tag Heuer was king in the 1990s. Sadly there were many fakes being worn. Good to see this model still in very good condition after 30 years!
What I like about Tag these days is that they often go below the radar. Not in the 80s/90s when they were hotter than Rolex's.
@@DesignReviews were TAGs really that desireable back then? Seems crazy now given how much they are "looked down" upon these days.
I do like the WA12xx versions of the Formula 1, really neat little quirky things!
@@NeonMako in the late 80s and 90s, Tag (and Swatch at lower end) were the only Swiss watchmakers making a real profit. Tag's profit got so big by the mid-90s that they were able to market themselves and flood billboards around the world. With celebrity endorsements, and a refreshing set of designs compared to the dreary legacy ones from Omega and Rolex, Tag was indeed king. Alas, as tastes change and the retro craze took over in the mid to late 2000s with a focus on Automatic movements, Tag was caught on the wrong foot as it did not have heritage unlike Rolex/Omega etc.
This looking down on Tag is about 10-15 yr old phenomenon, partly because Tag had such a heavy presence in the quartz segment that it smeared their ETA movements. Those ETA movements are really good movements, but most watch snobs are also total idiots.
Thanks for the video! Keep up the good work.
I did not expect such an educational video about this watch. The watch looks fun to wear
I got it and I love it! thanks for the complete review!
Thanks for the feedback. It's a great watch and is a classic.
Hi,
It must be fate that you uploaded this when you did. I started wearing this watch about 2 months ago, after my father passed it down to me (still alive thankfully). It's also my first adult watch as I've always disliked large watches. I think knowing this history behind the watch connects me with it further which is really cool. I love the bevel on the watch because although I don't dive, I am rather forgetful and often use it to remind me when I have things to do. I also notice that on my watch the bevel doesn't click and rotates both ways, time to look for a repairer!
Anyway, thanks for providing a enjoyable recount of the history of this watch, it's humbling hearing the stories that come with such a small object.
Regards,
George
Thanks for the wonderful story That's a great Tag Heuer to have being the first ever model. And makes it even better that it's handed down to you.
@@DesignReviews Thankful that you've provided me the history required to fully appreciate how the watch came to be. Hopefully I can add some of my own history to it. Liked and subscribed, have a good day!
Great review!
👍🏽
That was actually a very informative video and so glad I stopped by. Your watch looks to be in excellent condition. Wish I can find one in that condition
You will find them on eBay/craigslist/fb. Be sure the markings on the bezel are not showing signs of wear as it makes all the difference. Look for sellers from Japan, and remember there were 2 sizes: 28mm and 34mm.
I have a real one! Did you find one? I'm thinking of selling mine as I really need to put whatever I can towards a new car. You'd have to communicate with my stepdad dad though. Mine's in very good condition and a 100 per cent genuine. 🤗⌚
Mine must be the 28mm one though as it's dainty on me.
I found this watch black dial at work that was sitting for months and asked I could take it and my job said I could do I did I’m so luckyyyy
I have this ⌚ it's been the most comfortable watch I've ever had, I'm looking at it right now. She still barley got any wear or anything. I bought it for $10 at a market not even thinking it was real. Was thinking of selling it actually.
Thankyou ⌚👈 Thanks for the info. 🥳
Hang on to it. It's value will increase in 5-10 yrs as the old examples die out and it becomes rarer.
Thankyou, I don't think I could actually part with it even though I do have prettier one's I seriously do like this one the best, love how it glows at night the weight and quality how the stainless steel band doesn't rip my arm hair's out. Lots of pro's.
❤️⌚
That was a really helpful review I have one of these watches for years but don't remember how I came by it. I took it to a jeweler a few years back to see if it was just a flat battery that was stopping it from working, but alas it was something else, but he did confirm it was real & a good quality watch. Mine is a dark blue version with an original rubber strap, but when I tested to see if the whole dial glowed in the dark it didn't & the only identifying features is the WA1210 cereal number, any idea how I can find out more ?, thanks.
Thanks for the comment. I am surprised a battery replacement won't get the watch running as the quartz movements on these watches are rock solid. It's also very easy to replace the entire movement as well.
The dark blue version had lume on the markers and hands and glows like a conventional watch. Looks good paired with a red strap,
I have the same watch w rubber band.
You would need to pay from £200 to as much as £400 for one of these classic watches from 1980s
I have same one ☝️ with sapphire crystal .. similar condition..amazing timepiece enjoy ☺️
Classic
Its pretty simple, if u like it u buy it.
As those who purchase rolex ,they dont complain about it.
No watches are worth the money.simple smartphone is the best
This model I actually a later piece from 1990, the original F1 Tag Heuer came put 5 years earlier in 1985, they have the fibreglass casing...just FYI.
The stainless steel model comes in 1987, one year after the fiberglass introductory model. They capitalized on the success of the F1 by trying to make it more premium.
@DesignReviews you're correct, however the model you showed is a 1990 piece.
Can a new bezel be put on this watch if the old bezel is scratched up?
Absolutely. Pry it out taking care not to scratch the case and then replace it. The challenge is to find a replacement in good condition.
Hello. May I ask, does this watch has a "screw down" crown, or is it just a push button crown? Could you confirm this please? Wanted to know if this Formula 1 watch of its era had a screw down crown or just a push crown? Thanks.
The early versions did not have a screw down crown.
@@DesignReviews Okay, great. Thanks for taking the time to let me know.
Good question 😮😮😮😮😮😮😮?????????
What a movement?
The original Tag quartz movement.
How much is that watch for year 2022
Anything from $250 to $600. Depends upon the condition of the bezel and color combination
Hi there. Do u know the black version? Same year of this?
@@DesignReviewseven higher if it’s NIB or like new with box, seen them go as high as 800-1k
Lol. I should sell some of my NIB Tags from the late 80s.
This was very first proper watch at 13 yrs. I had to work to pay for it.. It got stolen 😕
Unfortunate. What was the replacement?
So its a dive watch?
Fashion diver!
