You put your finger on it. He is the most under-estimated talent. I'm a life-long Elton John fan and i always say that no one comes close, but David Gray does. Absolute genius.
As a British ex-military man, I find this track extremely moving and contemplative. My action was in 1982 and it still affects me to this day. It's good to have music that makes us stop for a moment and realise just how lucky we are, and to remember those that we left on patrol. Excellent track Mr Gray!
You the second ex army to have written on this and I suppose it's alot of meaning to every one: but I can't imagine what you have seen or any army man :I was suppose to join army to be medic nurse but things happend and could go :I done training just not enough due to health problems :I was only 17 going on 18 and often wander what my life would be like if I would have joined army :chin up sir you served country all the best 💂♂️💂♂️
@@catherinegallagher1101 Thanks for your reply and kind words Catherine. I was actually Royal Navy, but did two tours down in the Falklands, having been attacked and sunk by Argentine aircraft the first time around and then volunteering to return to Port Stanley as soon as I could. Brothers in Arms by Dire Straights also has the same effect on me, which was penned by Mark Knopfler at the time it was all going on. Follow your dreams! All the best!
The first time I heard this song I was transported back to other times and guys I have not seen in two decades or more. I wonder what happened to all of them, I think about the tracer in the falling dark.
I was a Corpsman (combat medic for the US Marine Corps) and this one always made me think of a man dying on the battlefield, with his last thoughts on this mortal plane being of his wife. I suppose we've both seen some things which make us relate to this song more than most.
Gonna close my eyes Girl and watch you go Running through this life, darling Like a field of snow As the tracer glides In its graceful arc Send a little prayer out to ya 'Cross the falling dark Tell the repo man And the stars above That you're the one I love, yeah Perfect summers night Not a wind that breathes Just the bullets whispering gentle 'Mongst the new green leaves There's things I might have said Only wish I could Now I'm leaking life faster Then I'm leaking blood Tell the repo man And the stars above That you're the one I love You're the one I love The one I love Yee hee, yee hee Don't see Elysium Don't see no fiery hell Just the lights up bright, baby In the bay hotel Next wave coming in Like an ocean roar Won't you take my hand darling On that old dance floor We can twist and shout Do the turtle dove And you're the one I love You're the one I love The one I love Yee hee, yee hee....
R.I.P LT.William "Billy" Moore FDNY - NY's Bravest....I will AlWAYS miss you...meet me at the gates love but help me along while my feet are still on this Earth....Love never dies
As an ex British squaddie this track hits me hard and when you haven't heard it in a while my god does it catch you off guard a truly beautiful track but it can break you in half
I remember when this was on the radio in about 2006 sitting in a McDonalds crying after I had just found out my little brother had died, now I listen to it I smile because I remember him.
I heard this song first time on Rescue Me and being a former combat medic who spent 3 years in Afghanistan, I can tell you this song is about a soldier dying in combat and thinking about his love as he is dying
@jonathan Atkins Damn, I was 14 when I made the original comment. But yes, I agree, he's insanely underrated. Sucks to see he doesn't have more subs all these years later.
hes the last of a generation that put more work into his job, these days its all done on a computer and musicians dont get work,,but the youth have been trained by radio and media not to be interested in the talent only the picture.i learnt to play guitar with hands that didant even open,,i only opened my left hand,,and im a good guitarist 45 years later,im not only prof anyone can do it,but also shows the kind of work needed to be desent,,but who cares i get 50-100 views if i had tits id get millions YNWA
Beautiful song takes me.back to my first date with my then boyfriend. 9 years later and 1 beautiful daughter later im proud to call that man my husband.
This is one of the most beautiful songs. The lyrics are a perfect fit with the music. The final thoughts of the dying soldier are of the one he loves...I generally have to play it over two or three times every time I hear it. Awesome tune, awesome voice.
Must have missed something through the years. Stopped my car a couple of years ago when I heard this song, but no name or title followed. Recently, I heard this song again while driving with my Irish neighbor. I stopped again and he told me the song is by David Gray. Such a voice, what a song, superb production, great arrangement, I owe my neighbor...
Listening in 2024, just like I did in 23, 22, 21....you get the idea. To the best singer I've heard, singing one of his best songs. Love me some David Gray!
Have loved his music for at least 20 years. His lyrics touch your soul and that voice can be filled with joy and anguish and delight and despair. Thank you David Gray!
rarely comment, but this guy is in a diferrent league. you can hear visualise and really feel the beauty pain and tradgedy of love. amazing...... and i love meta well all good music.
Forget about the singer for a minute and listen to the lyrics in this song. A tribute to a soldier caught in a fight he doesn’t understand . But he is leaking life faster than he’s leaking blood And yearning for the love ❤️ he will never know. I cried the first time I heard this song .
Always loved this, my Dad heard this as my ringtone a few years ago and loved it also. Sadly he passed in September 2919. Love you Dad... this song is for you xx
Truly one of the great under-rated song writers of his generation. Like most my intro was "Babylon," but his music is much deeper. A British version of Warren Zevon. Two of the most underrated song writers of their generation(s). Both great at capturing the human experience.
Saw him live once here in VA. Finished with Please Forgive Me...the ending was amazing with that driving guitar & drums...even though they had just brought in new drummer, was still fantastic
I am a 42 year old. I have heard this song dozens of times, and it still makes me cry. I have made 4 cd's for my fiancee, this sing will be played at our wedding reception, as will the three other cd's, throughout the day. Xxxxxxxx
His lyrics always speak my heart and soul. If you've never had to endure the pain of losing the One, pray you never do...."there's things I might have said, only wish I could..."
I think this line is very important to the message of the song. I believe it's coming from a dying man who believes that his efforts and will carry weight, hence the line. His dying thoughts are to say, "Let them know how important you are to me, so they know to be gentle with".
Dear Sean Fries...you're suffering and these songs can be very healing too.....I understand, as my husband also suffers from PTSD, as a now retired, Lt Colonel and 11 deployments over the years the Military completely changed him....he too thought that life was far too difficult to go on, but through faith and hope, he's grow to be an even better man because of the experiences and difficulties he faced. I pray for you, I pray for your out come to be positive too...you are important and you can make a difference to many more with your life. Find out what your purpose is. Share what's really on your heart. Ask for what you need...people can and will help you if you ask and be faithful and truthful.... blessings to you♡

This hits hard the heart, bless those who have lost someone in life and love .
Gonna close my eyes
Girl and watch you go
Running through this life, darling
Like a field of snow
As the tracer glides
In its graceful arc
Send a little prayer out to ya
'Cross the falling dark
Tell the repo man
And the stars above
That you're the one I love, yeah
Perfect summers night
Not a wind that breathes
Just the bullets whispering gentle
'Mongst the new green leaves
There's things I might have said
Only wish I could
Now I'm leaking life faster
Then I'm leaking blood
Tell the repo man
And the stars above
That you're the one I love
You're the one I love
The one I love
Yee hee, yee hee
Don't see Elysium
Don't see no fiery hell
Just the lights up bright, baby
In the bay hotel
Next wave coming in
Like an ocean roar
Won't you take my hand darling
On that old dance floor
We can twist and shout
Do the turtle dove
And you're the one I love
You're the one I love
The one I love
Yee hee, yee hee....

Wow it's about death and you had it at your wedding? It's a song that a soldier should have playing at his funeral dedicated to those he left behind.
Where are you from ?
