This installment retraces Ronald Reagan's path to the White House. The author speaks with Walter Isaacson about how this sequence of events led to the current political climate in America.

OTOH the GOP and its useful idiots (look in the mirror) is actively trying to destroy American democracy. The degenerate failure in the WH is a clear and present danger. Your ignorance reveals why.

It is how their brains are wired and it shapes the religion rather than the religion shaping them. Sam Harris has that wrong. With the president so far right they just go more to the right. Like King Lear, if the king is mad so are his subjects. (Trump has Cluster B personality disorder. One has to have concern over those who are attracted to that.)

I well remember the 1980 election. It cast me into a mood of deep depression. As a progressive gay man, it felt as if a rug had been pulled out from beneath my feet. This became worse with the rise of Newt Gingrich. That movement has now degenerated into something unpredictable, a neo fascist wave, which threatens our core values. The election of 2020 is the most crucial since 1860 and I fear, may well be the death blow of the Republic.

    • @mbords01
      @mbords01 2 года назад +1

I suppose one does not have to be a gay man to say "wait, wait, that is not right, this is just dangerous"; I was not born here neither did I grow up here but I remember watching the debate between Carter and Reagan and I knew I was for President Carter. I was really disappointed when I learned later on that he did not get reelected. I think there is sustentative chemistry difference between conservative and progressive individuals. The difference has become quite distinct and so frustrating and depressing to see.
Progressives in general are not afraid to speak up and stand up for the rule of law! I am so proud of them.

I never understood the fascination Americans (including my own parents) had with him. I watched him speak every time his speeches wee broadcast, trying to figure out why this palpably not intelligent man had captured the minds of America. Perhaps this is the biggest way in which television HAS been a detriment to our society. Two has-been TV personalities have been the 2 worst presidents in my lifetime. Reagan was a B actor with a string of low quality movies and TV shows and Trump is a bankrupt developer who started one of the most boring and idiotic "reality" TV shows in history. For Pity's sake, neoliberalism (the most recent push) came from the Conservatives at the Chicago School of Economics and that was seized upon by neo-cons and conservatives and democrats who didn't want to lose middle American and moderate republican voters, which is why the democratic party listed to the right and why recent Democratic presidents have been moderate republicans in democratic clothing. Of course, the Party of No compromise, which came into being ala Gingrich, ate their own moderate republicans. And now, Reagan would likely be considered a RINO or a liberal if he was on the scene with a different name. So people on the left rail against the wealth gap, wage theft, the destruction of opportunity, and the right? Tyranny is having to sell wedding cakes to gap couples.

I votes for Ronald Reagan my 1st vote 40 years ago. Just like Jefferson could have made our country better by pushing for his version of the founding document which attacked slavery as immoral but he decided that morals were not as important as a compromise that hurt fellow Americans.
So this is the same with Reagan. For this guy to say Reagan was uncomfortable with the speech does not hold water because his recorded conversation with President Nixon proved he was comfortable with calling Black Africans monkeys. It slipped right off his tongue.
Reagan lost me when he was against South African sanctions and MLK holiday.
White Conservatives have never been good for Black people over our history.
    The interviewer then blames Democrats?
This idea that it is about economics is just silly. It is obviously about race and educated people.
Trump obviously started out with racist attitudes toward Mexicans and the people who wanted someone like that salivated at a racist president who believed the same conspiracies they did. Trump is just the Monster, the Republican Party is Dr. Frankenstein who creates him. They are complicit.

My brother I am not really surprised by me being the only one that gives you a thumbs up. In my humble opinion and I am probably just around your age. I was serving in the military during the Reagan’s years. And I can remember Reagan giving amnesty to 12 million illegals to this country. Not one peep from White Conservatives because they were going to be exploited for their low wage work. I can remember Reagan and the Airline pilots Union and Reagan forcing them to break their strike and go back to work. I can remember Reagan introducing reduction in our military and not a peep from white conservatives. But these same White Racists Conservatives was all about destroying Black families by introducing Crack into our neighborhoods to fund their illegal wars. Locking Black people up for marijuana while whites was all Coke up and seen no sentencing. The Democrats didn’t do any justice for African Americans as well with Biden 2.0 version of his crime bill superseding Reagan’s the Three strike you out law mainly pertaining to African Americans regardless how trivial the crime may have been. Evangelicals are white hypocrites who are 99% racist. I worked with this white lady who claimed to be a Christian. And when the tapes came out of Trump bragging about assaulting women because he is rich. I asked her why do she support him? She didn’t have an answer of course...but she wasn’t the brightest and I knew the answer. Abortion.....yes...she would have voted for Satan himself because of abortion. Mainly WHITE ABORTION....white babies being terminated. Don’t let them fool you....White Christian care about White babies and every other non white lives doesn’t matter. Just my observation through the years....this country is heading downward due to the Inequality, Injustices, Ill Informed Uneducated White Racist that did drugs or drank away his life. And those African Americans who somehow succeeded get a crumb of the American dream through all the obstacles is somehow the reason for this white person failures. Always the OTHER is to be blame. I can remember a white girl in Texas suing the college because a African American got admitted. She blamed affirmative action....now here is where it doesn’t make sense. This white girl walks into a class of 30 students. Lets say 25 of the students are white and 4 are Asians....and that 1 Black student in this privileged young girl’s mind is that the Black student is the person that took her spot in the classroom. Not one of the 25 whites or the Asians.....but the African Americans student. And that mentality is why this country is failing and why Trump was elected.

@j c : I am sorry 500 hundred years is more than enough time to see all people who family been here since the 1600s as AMERICANS. Whites believe RACISM should TRUMP all than being an AMERICAN. We hold that torch up to the world bragging about it shining light. But WE who live through this AMERICA know it is just as dim as those TRAITORS who desegregated the Capital by smearing feces and urinating all throughout the building. After all that African Americans been through in this country and continue to go through. Never once did WE gather and thought about a coup. Not once.....but don’t worry they already talking about forgiving these Traitors. I tell you this if they were Black people who did this. We would be exile from society and label as terrorists for the rest of our lives and our future children’s lives. These people had 400 hundred years..... Maybe you can help me understand this....In my life I had passed through some small towns. The population would be 98% White and not a black person in sight. You would think it is white utopia but for some strange reason these are not HAPPY. They are consumed with Black people....black people this....black people that. And they rarely see a black person unless they are stopping for gas to get the HELL out of there. What is wrong with those people? Never happy......you got your white town, your white local government but yet their failures is black people’s fault. Insane.....truly INSANE.

We don't need anymore comfort and ease. We need actions that reign in the corporate control of our country. Ronald Reagan was of a different time, we today are at a crossroads that not even Reagan could comprehend. Trump has failed in cleaning up the swamp, but Reagan helped create it, along with every corporate lackey president since, including those warmongers Clinton, Obama and Bush.

Reagan's "Morning in America" sunlight ads -- search for them here, it's literally what they were -- are exactly equivalent to what Derek Black said he did in another interview on this show: he made racism and patriarchy look pleasant by promoting it in sanitized language, without using racial slurs. Reagan made it look palatable by coating it with a sunny, golden glow. The spoonful of sugar makes poison more palatable as well as medicine.

Quick Summary of the movie, "McConnell's Beast Island"
McConnell can't control the strange wild beast he created on the REPUBLICAN BEAST ISLAND; well, the beast McConnell created, ate him alive & then they begin to fight each other to become the new leader of the island until finally there's only one Republican beast left & because he can't handle the loneliness, he swims to another island & trys to pass himself off as a native of that island, the "let's just get along Democratic island", but they recognize him as dangerous & they banish him from their island; then the Republician beast went back to his island & endured the remainder of his USELESS, LONELY life in which he progressively lost his mine before he died a CRUEL & JUSTIFIABLE death.
I love this movie! How about you?

I just have to comment on the quotable quote of one of the most infamous leaders of False Religion, Pat Robertson. What he is advocating here by saying "God wants stability. It's better to have a stable government under a crook than turmoil under an honest man." is the notion expressed by the Israelites in 1 Samuel 8:6 But when they said, "Give us a king to lead us." this displeased Samuel.
When Samuel later relayed this request to Jehovah this was Jehovah's response, "This is what the king who will reign over you will claim as his rights: He will take your sons and make them serve with his chariots and horses, and they will run in front of his chariots. 12 Some he will assign to be commanders of thousands and commanders of fifties, and others to plow his ground and reap his harvest, and still others to make weapons of war and equipment for his chariots. 13 He will take your daughters to be perfumers and cooks and bakers. 14 He will take the best of your fields and vineyards and olive groves and give them to his attendants. 15 He will take a tenth of your grain and of your vintage and give it to his officials and attendants. 16 Your male and female servants and the best of your cattle[c] and donkeys he will take for his own use. 17 He will take a tenth of your flocks, and you yourselves will become his slaves. 18 When that day comes, you will cry out for relief from the king you have chosen, but the Lord will not answer you in that day.”
Long story short we are today "Crying out for relief" from people like Pat Robertson, Donald Trump, Ted Cruz, Josh Hawley, Lindsay Graham, etc. And the answer to our pleas has nothing to do with asking for yet another crook as King.
So here we are all those years later with false religion leaders like Pat Robinson disobeying Jehovah's instructions to stay out of politics actually running for President! And, worse yet, we wind up with actual President's like Donald Trump who has virtually violated every one of the Ten Commandments and, worse yet, brags about doing so! Now that Trump has gone down in infamy one of the most likely Republican candidates for President, Ted Cruz, has been described by no less an authority on earthly corruption than Republican ex Speaker of The House John Boehner as "Lucifer in the flesh!"

The “shining city on the hill” referred to John Winthrop’s vision of his people (the Massachusetts Bay Colony) striving to be an enlightened model of Reformed Protestestantism lead by a highly educated group of clerics. He believed it only shone when the city strove to be a model and that it would cease shining if the people failed to adhere to What was expected of them from God. It was not an endowed lighting but an earned one.

I am a little uncomfortable with this author's response to Walter's question RE the amount of blame assignable to the liberal element for the rise of the Radical Right. There is a difference between looking down and discriminating against blacks and not allowing the "unconnected" to join a fraternity but I'm not all that sure it's that great. And while it's fine to help people adjust to social change it's important to allow them to earn a decent living at a job given respect during the adjusting period. Even a cursory glance around the American economy today reveals bicycles retailing at $6,000 plus, cars retailing for $100,000 plus being constantly "out of stock" and sunglasses going for upwards of $300 while at the same time those "left behind" are homeless, totally without the means of paying for medical care, and looked down upon by the "winners" who in Anand Giridharadas words are "taking all." I'm not saying that liberals and those to the left of Biden are totally or evenl largely responsible for all this, but I am saying that they are far from blameless!

The main difference between Ronald Reagan and Donald Trump was/is Reagan was a successful actor who barely passed the IQ test and Donald Trump is a failed actor whose proudest accomplishment was being able to memorize and recite "Person,” “woman,” “man,” “camera,” “TV." Not for nothing was Trump known as the "useful idiot!" P.S. I hate to say this but there is a rumor circulating that Trump actually only got as far as "Person, woman" before being unable to recite further...you have got to see some symbolism in that.
