- Derek Black was raised in a family dedicated to white supremacy. His father was founder of a notorious white nationalist website, and his godfather was the infamous David Duke. Black spread his own racist beliefs, and coined the term "white genocide," as host of a popular radio program. But once in college, Black was confronted by his friends about his bigoted beliefs. They gradually worked a transformation, and Black eventually renounced his views. He discusses all this with Michel Martin.

He was only taught that, and more importantly, was modeled in implicit racism by family elders for 18 years, NOT "all his life."
After about age 11, one's peers become important sources of learning. This is the importance of adolescence, which may be regarded neurologically as a developmental stage lasting to as late as25 years, due to the forebrain (pretty much all the major associational areas) not attaining full connectivity.
Age 21, was in our species the universally understood minimal adult age, outside of US legislation.
A number of cognitive deficits in choicemaking show strong prevalence , rather quickly diminishing statistically, as well as physical strength, stamina never being maximized in normal, nonsedentary cultures until later.
Adulthood is quite clear and developmentally set in many species. Ours is more clearly understood than most.
Brains, remember, are predictive organs, requiring strong memory, associational, evaluative skills, and MUST throughout lifespan, be able to correct previous errors in evaluation.
While it is more subtle, intimate, complex than can be treated in a comment, we see conaiderable evidence of high anxiety and cognitive withdrawal in the commenting here, which , again, is the problem, more pervasive than its biased manifestations -symptoms.

I agree. I'm an ex-conspiracy theorist and I can tell you that these people are both passionate and confused. They want to understand the things that are effecting them or well could, and when they can't understand the explanations they are given, because they are confused, dumb or mistrustful, then they take the explanations they can understand or tollerate. The concept that a segment of your society are looking down on you and being jerks to you for no good reason? That translates VERY easily.

@@AussieGriffin Right. Anger and blame are always the " go to" answers when your life sucks or you feel downtrodden and ignored. There's a lot of untangling that needs to be done across our society. Many people have felt left behind.
If people think they know everything, they learn nothing.
There are a lot of reasons for white nationalism. Some of them are poor and ignorant. Whiteness is all they have. Some have genuine fear of others. They fear things that are different.
Some fear that they will lose what they have.
Trump has exploited them, and have yet to realize that they have been used.

That’s why there’s these narratives about college being part of some Illuminati agenda and how we “can’t trust science, history, sociology, scholars” etc... I was NEVER like this lol I grew up a secular Buddhist and pacifist but I did get a whiff of really bad depictions of feminism and social justice during gamergate and went through a “””skeptic”””” phase before college. It was mostly towards feminism and just not being educated or being outright deceived but I also had a lot of internalized misogyny snd cooing with SA and my experience and a woman and at the time older teen, it was painful to boil my experience down to some buzzfeed junk and when I started to resllt get into critical theory and start learning about the real thing I was afraid because it hammered home that I have a lot less free will and agency than I think and also I have a lot privilege and as a genuine empath who cares for people being oppressed, it was hard to make sense of knowing that I couldn’t say I cared in the same breath advocate for horrible ideology. But I do believe at core I’m a kind and loving person and I do enjoy science, logic, philosophy, history, psychology etc and understanding how reality operates so ultimately the facts simply led me away from my misconceptions

We want change and if so then we should make allowance for people to learn and grow past their mistakes . Maybe not hate, but the human species is definitely territorial and tribalist by nature. So our survival instinct was and is still strong to see the stranger as dangerous, as an outside threat to our group’s resources. But most people in America aren’t having to literally fight and defend their resources every day and we have these big, smart brains that we can use for critical thinking and compassion. I think in modern society so many people feel a lack of belonging and sense of community which lends itself to people joining groups, however insidious, in an effort to feel like they belong.

I was raised Mormon by well-meaning parents who told me that the church frowned on inter racial couples and that black men couldn’t hold positions of authority. When I asked why this was my simple mother said it was because problems happened when black and white blood were mixed 😳 when I was asked to the prom by the handsome and popular bi-racial teen across the street I was told no, I needed to find a “nice” boy to go with. Never mind that he was a straight A student, football player and very sweet guy (who I went on to date in secret). It took me well into adulthood to realize I had been raised racist. It has taken the rest of my life to try to understand and unlearn those teachings, particularly the subtle ones. I expect it will be a lifelong learning process of putting myself in another’s shoes.
TODAY'S Church of Jesus Christ (Mormon), which does not preclude people of colour holding positions of authority, surely must have done real soul searching and chose to change this horrible practice (1980's I think). If I had been in your position I would have turned away from my upbringing. In 20017, I was baptized to the church and have never felt a moment of regret. You see, it was my CHOICE to examine the faith and convert from the Protestant church.

I unfortunately, had just about the exact experience. I vividly remember in the early 80’s being told dark skin was extra melanin , to show the mark of Cain. Literally translated, dark skin is evil. I was 14 or so the first time I saw an interracial couple, they were “tolerated” because they were active duty military (ie would not be around long).
I won’t even go into being a female born into that church and what that does to an incredibly feisty, and independent little girl.
On the bright side, I was around 11 or 12 when I decided to question this bubble of nonsense. I was forced to go to church, had missionaries and bishops lay hands on me (this is prayer,that women aren’t allowed to do, where several men lay hands on your head and pray) to convince me not to let go of that abhorrent doctrine.
I let it go ... and am much better for it.

@@wanparaph I understand your point which is historically correct in some cases but "the establishment" I was referring to is defined by the people who hold positions of power now. I would expect that most of those individuals do not hold the same views as white power activists. By all means do your work against fascism but understand that you need Police reform and more resources put into this fight. I am old white southern man . The south is more integrated neighbor hoods are mixing . Young people mix friendships more than my generation. I live in a mix neighbor hood , blacks , latinos and whites and we get along fine. Their is still a lot of racism . I personally am tired of it . I don't think we can advance as a nation with one group being so far behind. It makes me feel good to see people get educated and move into middle class no matter what their race is. Appreciate this speaker he is very articulate and well educated person that has obviously used his mind to move into a better conscious state.

We don't hear enough from voices like yours. I grew up in a primarily black neighborhood (even though I was white), and the majority of my friends were black. When I went into the Marine Corps, I encountered a lot of southern men who despised me for being too friendly with the "coloreds"....this nation has a lot of growing still to do.

Even middle class neighbor hoods with $200000 houses are mixed. Where I live there is more blacks than whites. I have never had a bad problem with black or latino. I live next store to latino family we get along fine.

He is not only using his past to make him a better person, but he is using his past to help others become a better person. This is what I would call real. What his friends gave him was the opportunity and permission to right himself - mainly - by sitting with him, patiently. This demonstrates that we are, without question, going to have to extend ourselves. Risks will need to be taken. with failures accepted, if we are ever going to fix the mess we made of it all.

I think that was the point of his argument. To not assume that white nationalists are uneducated but in fact a lot of them have quite an extensive amount of education which is a bigger problem. Because these people are pretty smart and they still fall pray for fear mongering or airs of superiority and if thats the case there is A LOT of work to be done when it comes to racism.

Derek makes the point that segregation perpetuates racism when diversity opens minds. I myself have had a struggle with my bias but the more I see a diverse public and media, the more I realize the utter fallacy of my irrational bias.

@josie A pattern interrupter is Someone who interrupts beliefs and patterns (usually ones that are negative or unhealthy) that have been handed down through a family, generation after generation. Another example would be domestic violence. If you grew up watching your dad abuse your mom, the odds are that you will grow up to abuse your partner or you will attract an abusive partner are very high. You’ve, in essence, inherited the family “pathology.” But, if you grow up and develop an awareness of that pathology and refuse to continue the pattern, you might get some help from a therapist to work through that trauma, so you can not consciously or unconsciously perpetuate it and pass it on to your children. Healing the trauma and releasing it interrupts the pattern, so it “dies” with you and will not be continued to be passed down through the generations of your family.
Unfortunately, the practice of continuously maintaining, promoting and subjecting others to their system of racism has had a detrimental impact upon the health and wellbeing of their victims for generations.

My family was quite racist...even as a ten year old I didn't like their ideals...granted they weren't exactly like the Duke family, but Trump has always reminded me of my father.

I don’t think people can change your mind, what’s possible is to change your heart, and it’s what happened here. This guys heart was changed by the goodness of the very people he thought were bad. And what he is doing is planting the seed by speaking out, but then people need to interact closely with others to change their hearts. Brain wash is not easy to undo.

@@TampaDave That's true, and it is actually called narcissistic personality disorder when it becomes severe enough. People with the disorder need to feel superior, because they believe that not being superior would mean that they are worthless and unlovable. Their behaivors are usually motivated by the fear of being abandoned. It's a horrible disorder to suffer from, and causes immense pain to both the person diagnosed with it, and the people around them. There are treatments which can help, though.

I agree. wow...what an inspiration he is. But the message that stood out the most was "misinformation". How do people hear the truth? We need a huge "Love thy neighbor" movement in this country. That's how I raised my children and that's how their children will be raised. The first question was about how people who are educated with college and graduate degrees are also white nationalists.
Yet, he points out, correctly, that people of all education levels hold these twisted views.
And by education I’d say interaction with other people out of their white supremacy bubble. Ones who were smart and challenged him.
Derek Black is an excellent advocate for the possibility of convincing people to abandon their racist beliefs. It gives me hope that people can change even if they are currently indocrinated.

Interesting his statements about Chicago being “liberal” but saw so much blatant racism. I moved from a fairly conservative city in Southern California to the Portland, Oregon area and was absolutely shocked to hear the things that came out of people’s mouths. The fact that Portland PD officers were openly involved in the KKK until just a couple decades ago is one example.
Oregon was founded by white supremacists historically. Outside of Portland is all lumberjacks and hick towns filled with simpleton racists. Not surprised at all, they blame Democrats and colored people for their problems and call us irrational 😂

I don't expect they take it to heart, not yet, but I'm sure love leads them to meet together. They surely have taken his learnings to mind. That's where change starts.

That's awfully frightening.
By the same token, it was always there. Derek was raised to be a white nationalist from birth, his mother's first husband was David Duke, and I could spend hours just listing the groups that supported this nonsense in the 80s, 90s, and aughts that I knew of, that was always adjacent to American culture at large. It pops its head up every few years, eventually fades back into irrelevancy while tearing itself apart from the inside, then rinse and repeat every 5-10 years ad infinitum.
The internet helps make their time in the sun a little more intense, and the GOP discovering that they didn't have to pretend this was just a 'fringe movement' or couch their bullshit in cheap political jargon sure hasn't helped anything, but if you didn't know this before now then realize you were lucky and know this was always and will always be waiting in the shadows. That's why if you're against racism and nationalism, you have to make sure you recognize it for what it is as quickly as you can and make sure to make it as difficult for them to grab a foothold as possible the next time it pokes its head up.
Yep. I don't believe someone is non-racist unless they demonstrate it in their daily life. Your daily choices matter.
I agree and would want someone to call me out on things personally....even if it's uncomfortable for me. BECAUSE not everyone (including my own self) realizes the systemic, biased, & subconscious actions that we make daily that contribute to continued white supremacy....BUT....if we are willing to set our pride aside & listen to people with different experiences than us then we can definitely take action to do better. So I think understanding that white people aren't going to suddenly realize all of their errors instantly is important. That sucks & can feel disheartening I imagine. I know we can get there though! 👍🥰

This young man made lots of great points, but, one really sticks with me: Having a country so wildly divided (racially, economically, etc.) destabilizes the country and will make life worse for virtually everyone. Promoting injustice and inequality is a a terrific way for our adversaries, abroad, to tear this country apart. We have a nuclear stalemate on our hands so fomenting social division is a terrific tool for a country like Russia to use to ultimately bring this country to it's knees. Very bright young man. Radical inequality (and various forms of division, like racial division) will ultimately destroy this country.

This young man has a lot of integrity. I can't imagine the holidays for him, or how his relationships are with his parents, etc.
I bet love holds them together.
I hope his friends who helped change his mind offer him a supportive place to spend special occasions so he doesn't have to go near those toxic bigots he's related to if he doesn't want to. Love does not solve everything, and it should not excuse racism. Poor guy probably has other trauma he's not talking about after being raised in that culture.
The best parts of this excellent interview, to me, are Michel’s comment on the role of love in Derek’s conversion, and Derek’s VERY practical advice on how we as individuals can push back white supremacy. We and our families can do our bit by acting locally, individually. It’s hard - dinners and conversations with beloved family members who cling to racist attitudes can be awful - but this is the only way we can really evolve.
That's how I feel about the Christian evangelicals as I was raised in.
Same. They're not quite as toxic as White Supremacists, but they can be just as misguided. Especially when the two ideologies overlap.

I have seen this kind of turn-around from my perspective as a South African. I was very aware of the tension, near civil war fears as apartheid gave way to true democracy. We had our first black president, the great Nelson Mandela, and suddenly the fear and racist viewpoints of many white South Africans was challenged. I saw turn around in people I know. It gives me hope.
Thanks Derek! I really appreciate you opening up and helping me and us understand our blind side. You should be so grateful to your newfound family for leading you to the light as well.

I respectfully disagree. He easily could have graduated from college with honors as full of ignorance & hatred as when he arrived. It was his classmates & friends -- not history & science courses-- that punctured his erroneous worldview.
As a former teacher, I value & champion education. The most passionate instructors & riveting textbooks are unlikely to change hearts or fracture long-held ideologies.
All humans long to experience acceptance, respect, compassion, & companionship yet many are unwilling to reciprocate. Thankfully, he realized distrust, disrespect, & animosity only begets the same.
