A very gracious and brave lady indeed. The whole concert from Paris is a priceless treasure. Sumi must surely be reckoned amongst the most great artistes of all time. She gives enormous pleasure in all that she does. I salute her....
Ms. Jo held back her tears toward the end of the song--a sign of a well-seasoned performer. She looked utterly vulnerable singing this particular piece--it made me shed a few tears, considering the predicament of her family. Bravo!

Her dad died on the night when she was singing this Ave maria, at Paris. She got a phone call from home right before the concert... that her dad is terribly sick she wanted to go but she chose to stay and sing.. sing for her dad...
Watching this again after knowing the circumstances...Wow...What composure! What a professional. To be able to make it through such an emotional piece without totally losing it...knowing that her Father's funeral was occuring simultaneously as she sang and that she was absent from the funeral....ouch. What a showing of control under such emotional duress. Brava Miss Sumi Jo, Brava. That's so rough. What a complete PRO.
I wanted to cry watching her sining... Her father was her biggest supporter. He told her that she shouldn't get married because she is already married to her music. It could sound wrong to certain people, but if you know asian parents, this is extraordinary and shows how much he respected her career and her musical soul.
Bravo Sumi what a courageous lady to sing in that sad occasion. Callas has a shallow shreaking voice. She became a legend only because of her charisma and celebrities she had relationship with and not her voice. Sumi Jo is a seriously trained soprano including Mozart for many years. Not many sopranos in the past and present can match her powerful vocal skills and its beauty.

From what I remember, her Mother told her to go & keep the engagement because she told Sumi that her Father would have wanted her to sing for the people. I have loved Jo Sumi singing the Caccini version available here on youtube. I had thought Barbara Hendricks had the finest Schubert version but again, the voice from heaven proves herself the finest upon the Earth. She is the greatest talent alive today.

Lyric, coloratura, spinto--WHATEVER! Let them sing and let them fly, while us, here on earth let us give them the merit they deserve.
