Wood Turned Segmented Jingle Bell

- For this year’s Christmas ornament project, I have made a wooden jingle bell. I made this jingle bell out of a maple tree that was cut down in front of my father-in-law's house in 2017. This wood is now dry and it is a very striking, very clear, very light colored maple. It cuts and turns beautifully. I built a segmented sphere out of two half segmented bowls. I turned the inside of these separately. I made a small maple ball to go on the inside of this bigger sphere. I then glued the two halves together with the ball inside. I turned the whole object into a 6 inch sphere on the lathe. Finally, I cut an “X” pattern into this sphere on the CNC machine and this formed the jingle bell. It jingles with a very deep woody sound.

You can tell the kids are just delighted to record the last bit of the video. Adolescence is pure excitement.
Well, I know I've been there.
"Merry Christmas", take 36!
@@furtim1 yup.
I laughed. Now can since my kids are grown and out of the house but I remember those days. It's been my experience with all three of my kids that between the ages of 12 & 23 their mom and I were the most uncool dumb people that ever lived but then they realized around the age of 22-24 that mom and dad are smart and know things. It's a completely different relationship now and I love it.
@@MrGtownjake however no one could say Frank Howarth isnt the coolest dad around.
I had to laugh as well....At 21 and in college out of state, Mine only remembers to call and say hello... and I need an extra 100 bucks....Oh Joy!! and nice work there!
I'm just impressed by your consistent ability to find the footage you made 2-5 years ago for videos like this.
This^
I bet he just films everything just in case
Aye, film EVERYTHING, delete NOTHING!
Go through hard drives pretty quickly but it pays off every now an then 👍
Was it already on RUclips?
I have no idea but if I was him I would label the wood with like the video date or something so it was easy today find looking through the archives of footage he has
At 2:29 Frank says: “I did a quick drawing”, and proceeds to overlay a NASA worthy diagram. You are awesome Frank, we love you!
From an architect point of view, that is surely a very simple drawing, I guess...
@@bensthingsthoughts Can you tell if that is from AutoCAD?
@@RyanDraper I would say no. It surely has the vibe and look (black background and colorful overlay) but I think dimension lines are not terminated with arrows but with a cross mark. I would say Frank made this drawing in Illustrator or equivalent. But I might be very wrong.
@@bensthingsthoughts Thanks for the reply. I'm still exploring the best way to get away from graph paper for my segmented projects but not sure I want to jump in the middle of those two PC programs that are frustratingly proprietary lol. Have a good one and thanks again.
@@RyanDraper Take a look at Inkscape ! Setup in Inches or millimeters with the grid on it is pretty quick to draw simple plans. The software is open source and cross plateform. I use it for everything nowadays, it seems ugly and bad at start but I have grown to love it !
I realize that i basically measure time by how big Calvin and Claire have gotten :D
Merry Christmas to you all!
I just realized he named his children after the C&C machine
7:57 that moment when you realize frank didn't put any finish on the ball inside... and never will 😊
The best part of December is Frank's ornament video! And the kids are getting so big! They probably hear that all the time now lol
*Frank, at the end of each year's Christmas ornament video, you should do a quick montage the kids saying, "Merry Christmas" from every year before.*
Anyone else find this extremely therapeutic? Thanks Frank. Rock on man.
it's like Frank's Christmas present to his subscribers.......every year a new ornament. Really cool Frank. Thank you and Merry Christmas.
Oh the joy on your kids face!!! :D
That's about the most enthusiasm you can expect from teenagers. 😒
Yay, my Sunday just got soooooo much better ☺️ Your chuckles always make me smile!
I always smile when he chuckle's too!! I freaking adore him. My oldest daughter has a stutter, and my love for wood working brought us to Frank. He's just awesome and inspiring!
@@danielleendswell9250 Yep, what an awesome dude!
Another amazing project!! Your kids reluctantly saying merry Christmas just cracked me up 😂
It's the thought that counts!
Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way!
Oh what fun, it is to watch, this video today, HEY!
I love how you have footage from 3 years ago of you harvesting the wood for your current project. That's dedication.
A merry Christmas to you and your family
And of course to al the viewers as well !
The enthusiasm from your kids is PALPABLE!!!! He he he!
Nice project!
It's very satisfying to see the piece start to shine when you are sanding it in the lathe.
Great Frank.......Your children must really love you!
Great! You have a great carpentry skill
I just love your ornament builds.. such a great tradition.
Standing a bit on a sphere to find center is a great tip. Thank you, Frank.
kids grow old so quickly, seems yesterday when he was helping out in the shop and now his face is like, dad I'm too old for this !t.
I love the close-up shots on the lathe!!
How good is to hear your voice when explaining your woodworks..even if im italian i can cleary understand everything you say..thank you for sharing your skills..as always you are awesome man! Keep going 👍👍💪
Frank, if you do this again, throw a few handfuls of shavings into the bell with the ball before you glue that up, then the ball will be bounding around in a next of shavings, and when you make the slots at the end you can blow out the shavings
One of my favorite makers on RUclips. A real artist.
A work of art! What I appreciate most is how careful you are when you work, and how precise whatever you do is. Nothing is hurried. Everything is intelligently thought through, in advance. A pleasure to watch.
Beautiful, again and again. Thank you, Frank. All the best of the season to you and yours!
Beautiful
Turned out beautiful, Frank! Thanks for sharing the process.
You're shirt sleeves with the lathe are freaking me out my friend.
Frank....thank you. you are a great individual. Good luck to you and your family.
It's always a joy to watch your videos Frank! Thanks!
Beautiful, Frank.
This is amazing. I know you're enjoying the bell's sphericalness but you could add a really small wooden drawer pull to the top to mimic the little bump out on a metal jingle bell
I look forward to your Christmas project every year!
Yap, you have some teenagers! Nice bell!
Frank, that shot at 8:39 litteraly left my mouth open. Great cinematography and woodworking.
Gorgeous, Frank!
Excellent close-in photography Frank! Thanks for the inspiration!
You did a great job Mr. Howarth 👍
Thank you, Frank... Merry Christmas...
Always an inspiration - Thanks again Frank - It is beautiful.
I wish I had a shop like yours. Its so amazing to see how much you can do with a shop like that, and the skills to go along with it.
Merry Christmas!
I was looking forward to this year’s video :)
Yet another fun project, thanks for sharing, Frank!
A brand new sanding disc or sanding belt is both a joy and a terror.
Fantastic. It always amazes me how your segmented parts hold so well with just glue when you turn them. I really appreciate your skill.
Amazing as always Frank
Calvin is SO overjoyed! Reminds me of my own boys! Merry Christmas, Frank!
As much as I love the shop projects, the crafts are what drew me to the channel. Well done.
I've been waiting so hard for this video. Its just not the holidays until Frank makes an ornament video
Frank, Absolute Master Craftsmanship! As you know, I’ve been enjoying your videos from the beginning. I’ll Bet you didn’t think you would have gotten to this point where you imagine, design and build things such as this? I know that is what the shop was for, but the level of craftsmanship you have achieved is superb! Merry Christmas to your whole family!
Wow, that's beautiful.
awesome process, i really enjoyed it
hallo bro budiono it's nice to see you here :)
That close up shot of you turning the bell is really cool looking!
I love your holiday ornaments. This was beautiful.
Festive! Very nicely done, Frank.
My gosh, kids are growing up fast.
Lovely!! Thank you for sharing your amazing talent!!
those kids said merry Christmas like they were at gun point
Always look forward to your Christmas ornament. 🎄🎄🎄
I just loved your commenting, it makes everything more clear than visual information only with usually awful music in the background. You are the first page I subscribed to! Thank you for your work.
Beautiful work as always, Frank!
Frank, your "quick drawing" made me laugh. That's a full days worth of drawing, erasing and redrawing on the bench top for me.
Simply amazing
Your extreme close-up shots are brilliant!
I have never turned a sphere, but I will one day, and I will heed your advice to cut half of the difference.
Ingenious! Professional! Accurate work of ART!!
Thank you for excellent video!

@@TrevorDennis100 In Vader's voice: "You are on my Naughty List!".
No more Star Wars....PLEASE!!!
@@buckinjb More Star Wars movies wouldn't be so bad, just fire the incompetent buffoons who made the last few movies, memory hole the abominations, and start from scratch with people who have actually seen the original trilogy.
Beautiful work
Put you in the mood for the season! Great video!
I loved the part with the level on the ball.
Watching your Christmas ornament videos have become one of our traditions of the holiday lol. We love it
Always look forward to the Christmas ornament episode. As always it turned out great.
Thanks as always, Frank! Happy holidays.
I'm just really glad that you have made another wood turning video! 💯👍
The closeup turning shots are really nice
Really neat, Frank.
Happy Holidays to the Howarth family. Thanks for all your videos this year.
Christmas is not complete without Frank's ornament and video!
Wow. Great project.
At 6:00 Aw, that face of satisfaction we make when we get good results.
Always good to see your work process and filming, thanks for sharing.. Merry Christmas
It turned out beautifully! Good luck!
Merry Christmas Frank, your family and everyone on RUclips.
Very enjoyable as always Frank!
A merry Christmas to you too !!
This is one of the most beautiful things ! I LOVE it x so talented!
Excellent work man
Beautiful!!
Fantastic Frank! Your son has your eyes! Merry Christmas to you and your family! Love from NW Colorado. Thanxz
the piece looks great. when i get warm weather i'll try to make a couple to put on shelf with hand carved leaves and some acorns I turned already.T give it that holiday look. The problem you said about jingling while holding it . so what .I have family that like to pick up and look close at my pieces. Just the thought of a ball inside is what make it a jingle bell.
Looks nice!
Once again awesome work Mr. Howarth :)
Of course it looks cool.....it's cause you're so cool, Frank!
you could try using headless nails as registration marks so that you can turn the outside, take it apart and turn the inside (maybe once for each axis), and then put it together matching the pins and holes. I bet you could make it a lot thinner that way but still be safe and maybe you could get some decent cowbell sounds from it lol
Your skills are amazing. Thanks for sharing.
Awesome! Great work!
Merry Christmas Frank and family! God bless!!
That was awesome. Thank you for sharing.
