- Mischa Maisky (born in Rīga, 1948) and Kremerata Baltica (founded 1997) performs mvt III of J. Haydn's Concerto for Cello and Orchestra in C maj. (Hob. VIIb/1, 1761~1765).
Live concert (November 2006) recording by Latvian Television from Latvian National Opera. Concert took place on behalf of 19. NATO Summit in Rīga, Latvia -
Mischa Maisky is an incredibly great cellist. I first heard him playing several concertos around 1980. He always had an incredibly beautiful warm tone and naturally incredible technique. He has always been so special and has more gift than the others. Wonderful to hear him here!!!!
he hit the c string so deep it went sharp!
This is rock and roll in classic musica! Just so f...k intense! GREAT! :D
I agree. As a fellow cellist and musician I find it depressing the whole point of music is being missed by turning anything into a speed competition.
Uffffffffff!
Fantastic!
you are simply the finest that there ever was!!!
Insuperable!!!!!!
@Mizzles240 You have to remember that presto in Haydn's time was very different. People were not as technically able in those days, especially cellists. But that's beside the point really... Maisky does great here, I just feel that certain "moments" are lost at this speed.
Excellent!
Saludos cordiales,
Semplicemente mostruoso ! ! !
They played it in Warsaw last winter, it was amazing.
AMAZING!
lol he pounds the string so hard it rings a half step higher at 5:12
Meisterhaft🌹
@jadensoral007 i just came from hanna chang's 13 yr performance and I thought exactly the same thing when i heard the opening tempo. In fact, it's so fast my internet isn't loading fast enough...
PERFECT!!!!!!!!
Awesome!
what a awesome man
@mrsonsai
Nope, they played only Finale. This was gala concert for the NATO summit and there were only short pieces.
Did not regret watching this at 1.25 speed.
We could say he is actually old for performing this high speed concerto. However he still played it well (not a disaster).
I don't notice it. Honestly, music is open to interpretation, so he can do whatever he wants to do.
powerful!
This hurts! Why would such a brilliant cellist give such a rough and shoddy performance?
I am sure that he would do it much better with lower tempo, even the genius from genius cannot express Music well in this overlimited speed~~
wow, this guy has his bow spaned like crazy
@fourplusseven TBH my comment was referring to cellists in general.
Wow
3:48 that slide.
@JadenSoral007 Yes, I agree! Yes! Definitely! (Also, I am agreeing because I can't play it very fast.)
I kind of like this for some reason lol
@jbjohnson93 Translations can never be 100% accurate. It is true that they are more or less the same thing, but I was just using those two terms to make a point, I could have easily said Prestissimo instead. The point is that tempos were interpreted differently in classical times and it is entirely possible Haydn intended the piece much slower, but we'll never know for sure... my gut tells me that this is a bit too fast for the general public to fall in love with the music first time...
did you get the sheet music?
Maisky, this was really quite beautiful, but you've had better performances...I love this piece both faster and slower, but I think a person should only play it fast if his usual sound is clear and well defined. Maisky has a wonderful rich deep tone, which would show so much better in this piece if he took a little more time, otherwise it's a bit scratchy...still, he's an amazing cellist, and this was a pretty sweet recording
Is that a Stradivari?
Does no one else think that this piece has turned into one big speed race for cellists? I think there's more music in there that we aren't hearing.... at this speed cellists are forced to do fingerings that make it sound more like an exercise than music. I will always adore Maisky and his playing, but this speed race is a little bit disgusting I think. It's not presto, it's allegro molto.
wo ist das herz?//
viel zu schnell.......aber wunderbar.....
Geile sache
4:52
@IliekPVP Haha maybe your right there, the Russian style tends to do that. But nah I'm sorry it's definitely too fast.
That is about when I first heard him play-- only I don't call this warm or full tone at all. It's raspy, overly strident and in places badly off-pitch. At the beginning I thought perhaps his choice of instrument here is affecting things poorly, but there are a number of factors as there always are. The instrument, choice of strings, humidity... but #1: he's playing TOO FAST for the rest of the conditions. Simplest and most flagrant "error" of just about every would-be soloist... Too fast.
Dat tempo o,o
Gandalf !! (. . on speed)
Is it just me, or does it seem like his endpin is out really long.
@helar1984 A fine wardrobe? Nay, methinks Weber got pressured into wearing the puffy shirt on TV.
I seems to me fairly obvious (if not *quite* indisputable) that far the best performance of this movement is given by Rostropovich (I favor Du pre for the first).
Longest end-pin... ever.
me gustaria verlo en apocaliptyca ._.
LLLLLLLLLOOOOOOOVELLLLLLY!@
perfect? wy'?
Almost sounds like a guitar
Poor Maisky never figured out how to play with less than 110% effort. Everything he does is faithfully executed, but terribly overwrought.
I LIKE VERY MUCH THIS PEACE.BUT I THING THIS ARTIST AND VERY GOOD PERFORMER PLAYS TOO HARD AND TOO FAST.LOOSING THE FEELINGSA IN SUM MESURES.OF CORSE AGODD VIRTUOSE OF HIS CIND BUT.......
lol what would happened if his hair gets stuck to the ring and pulls hair out lol
scales are not rhythmic
Not only in the soloist but in the orchestra (and what "style" has a whole orchestra standing? Physical position affects TONE; it's not 30 "solists" it's supposed to be an ensemble,) the speed results in lack of Control. The number of blatantly sour and missed notes is far beyond the level expected from "professionals" of this calibre. I'm not sure I would call it disgusting, it's still lightening quick and exciting, but I think Maisky should be embarrassed by it. Amateurish, and poorly so.
I find the unusually fast tempo very exciting . Mischa and his ensemble are entitled to whatever interpretation of the music they choose, and this includes choice of tempi.
look the same piece by rostropovich.. lol
PERFECT!!!
Such a brilliant repertoire of the Cello!!!! Love that piece forever!!!
Bravissimi! !! Sarà un Onore per la Sardegna ascoltare il Maestro Mischa Maisky al Teatro Lirico di Cagliari! !!
lol if you listen to Truls Mörk or Pieter Wispelwey then you can say something about speed competition, they play really fast..
hehe Mr. frizzy hair. I just keep on thinking that. Hes a hair-doo with a cello.
i just never get tired listening to that....
@vegettogohan Julian lloyd weber has the most flawless performance of this movement in my opinion :D. He's also topped with a fine wardrobe :)
