This video is my favorite video of playing Haydn .. Her performance is powerfull, yet it's musical and the resonance and expressive power of the bow is amazing. Once I start listening, I can't get out until the end of the 3rd movement !
And to think her sister (I was told) is competing this year! Incredibly talented siblings.

An unusually engaging player. Cello playing at this level is absurdly difficult because to be graceful and expressive and in tune and colourful and to make sense of the phrasing at the average pitch of a violin without making it sound like hard work is a combination which simply beats most players. She however is on top of the technical and musical requirements, and without the forcing crashing sounds which so often pass for good playing.
I love how she plays so expressively. It’s so beautiful.❤

Oh my god she looks like a classical beauty in the painting.
She's having so much fun and plays this effortlessly without breaking a sweat. There's something special about her double stops, they have a depth and reverb that you don't hear from the other contestants. #1 in my book too.
What a lovely sound she makes. And no scratchy fast passages - all clean as a whistle. She's already up with and beyond many established Cellists. Fantastic performance.

Ich bin absolut begeistert. Für mich ist die junge Hayoung Choi eine würdige Nachfolgerin der Cellistin Jaqueline de Pres, die leider schon zu früh von uns gehen musste.... :-)

I also love the quality of Korean artists .. this performance is incredible... I never heard it like that before. Makes you want to cry in a good way... then go and be a better human.

I don't think I've ever watched and heard someone play so gracefully and full of character yet stay true to the composer. Totally beautiful. You can tell she really loves to play too.

It is so refreshing to hear this being played so beautifully light as intended by the composer. And she manages to play incredibly musically without all the grunting and pompousness of, say, any of the “great” cellists, especially the males. Watching and hearing those guys is usually watching their egos, rather than getting to hear the music without all that distraction. So thank you young lady! ❤

until quite recently it was not the 'norm' to attempt to play as much of an imitation as possible to what the composer had written, but rather to import your own essence into the piece. That probably explains the pompousness you describe. 😊

I have listened to many different interpretations of this music, but this one is very unique and perhaps the most compelling of all. This composition may sound a bit silly if you go too heroic, or nonsensical if you play around too much. She found the right balance between the virtuosity and charm, and delivered it so beautifully. After all those years, I feel like I just found this tune. Conngratulations!

She plays like a master.
When she doesn’t play her cello, she looks so shy and quiet but when she plays her cello, her eyes lit up and her confidence appears. Amazing young lady who has achieved at such a young age.

So brilliant! 😊it’s a blessing we have another young cellist of this excellence-and the orchestra is a delight, as is the conductor. Always a pleasure to hear this Great Concerto, by the great Titan played so wonderfully.
It is exquisite! I am going to a concert tomorrow where she is playing the same Haydn cello concerto and I am SO excited. I hope that I will have a chance to go to see her recital later this year as well. It is such a joy to find a musician that can captivate audiences across all ages.

So grateful Ms Choi played Haydn C she is absolutely "next level" & so musical --- must demoralising for other competitors...wonderful performance! who's cadenza is that! She is just "slip of a girl" without huge hands yet she just EATS it up --- simply amazing! Koreans must be SO SO proud of her!!!

Perfect balance with the instrument..any cello would love to be played by her...more and more Koreans are doing their own thing...,,they are becoming the benchmark for performance.....a talent pool like no other.
