The USS Indianapolis monologue is probably the best five minutes in cinematic history. The picture that Robert Shaw paints with words is better than any special effects could deliver
The second Quint saw the shark, it stopped being about money for him. It was about evening a score, and avenging the deaths of his friends, and THAT he would have done for free.
Robert Shaw's USS Indianapolis monologue is my favorite part of the movie. He did the version in the movie in one take. Just perfect! I read that he did a different take the day before but was so drunk. The scariest part...the USS Indianapolis event really happened. Almost 2000 crewmembers and about 300 went down with the boat with the rest of the 890 in the water. The Navy didn't even find out and send reinforcements for four days. Just over 300 survived. In 2017, the ship was found 18,000 feet down in the Philippine Sea. So tragic!
The boat being called Orca (Killer Whale) is genius. Orca's are pretty much Great White's only adversary. Orca's hunt Great Whites in packs...Hence why the boat is called Orca...its for hunting sharks.
Everybody who watches "Jaws" for the first time: "I'm ok with the killing except for dogs and kids...." Those that have seen the movie before: "Yeah, about that...."
Your observation that a shark is especially scary because you often can't see it coming really bears on the shooting of this movie. For months and for multiple reasons, the crew couldn't get the mechanical shark (Bruce) to work, pushing the shooting schedule way back. To save valuable time, Spielberg decided to shoot the early scenes entirely without Bruce. So roughly the first half of the film has no visible shark at all. Purely by this accident, many people (including myself) think the first half of the movie is far scarier than the second. Spielberg's genius shows itself best in those earlier scenes, when he calls on our imaginations, rather than our eyes.
I have lived in Hawaii my entire life. When I saw 'Jaws' when I was little, it ALMOST scared me enough to not swim in the ocean. But here, the shark is sacred and we're taught to respect the Aina (land) and Kai/Wai (water), so once I realized it was just a movie, I was okay. It is a great/iconic movie nonetheless and is studied by film students all around the world. Spielberg is a genius.

Even swimming pools make me doubt myself regardless of the large amounts of chlorine that a shark couldn't ever survive in , I still feel like JAWS is down there 💯
When Quint blew out the engine, a hole was blown in the boat and it started to sink. It was taking on water and started to go down. The position of the stern was lower in the water, making it possible for the shark to come out of the water and fall onto the deck by breaking the transom.
This was the first time a shooting star was accidentally captured on film like this. Spielberg loved it so much he started digitally adding it to his films.
The kid Jeffrey Voorhees who played Alex Kitner on JAWS runs a local restaurant at that same island where that movie was filmed, the name of restaurant is called The Wharf pub and restaurant you should visit that island for a vacation someday after the pandemic is over even try this restaurant and visit the lighthouses
3:03 I think they added this particular shot (with the guy tumbling down the hill) just to illustrate exactly _how_ drunk this guy was. I mean, later, he passes out on the beach, but _that_ could've been chocked up to him having been _awake_ all night. They wanted to _emphasize,_ this guy passed out because he was _drunk._
I saw some parts of Jaws when I was young. I definitely stayed in my head for many years but it also spurred in me to learn about Sharks. #1 We aren't on the menu and when it happens it's a mistake. But, even with a bite we are so fragile the damage is done. #2 They are often closer than we think and they leave us alonre Juvenile sharks and some species hunt in the shallows. A man in California took many drone shots of the coast during the Pandemic and it was amazing how many juvenile Whites are near the coast, swim by paddle boarders never paying them any mind. #3 I am happy to cede 75% of the Earth's surface them for I am as awkward in their as they would be in mine. Most species aren't aggressive to us and are actually quite fascinating, like Mako Sharks. Being able swim at 60 MPH in burst takes an incredible amount of strength given water is 830 times more dense than air and the fastest human 30mph in a burst. And, killing them so old men can use folk medicine to try and get a boner is not a cool.
Jaws was the first “blockbuster”. It’s a classic. Soundtrack was great, story great, acting great. I love the first scene, you don’t see the shark or any blood but you know what was happening to her. The USS Indianapolis story is true. Scary. Good reaction
Spielberg's Jaws would remain the top "blockbuster" film for two years until George Lucas came out with the original Star Wars in May 1977. Another interesting fact: the T-Rex roar sound when the shark's body floated down at the end was the same sound effect used when the Peterbult truck from Spielberg's first film "Duel" went over the cliff at the end.
The second best "Jaws" type movie INO is Lake Placid. Salt Water Crocodile in New York. There was also and interesting lower budget one from the 70s called Orca, where a killer whale hunts a fisherman who killed its mate.
Fun Fact: Ben Gardner was victim #4 in the novel of Jaws. But the way his head came out of the hill was done by Spielberg himself. After the film had finished wrapping, Spielberg shot the scene of Ben’s boat out on the water. He did it to illicit an additional scream from the audience. Because of Ben’s head popping out of the hull, screams could be heard in each movie theater wherever Jaws was being played. In the novel, the only sign of Ben Gardner was blood on the hull. He had a wife but I can’t remember if he had children. But it was quickly irrelevant because the film and novel quickly moved on from Ben.
23.27 one of the most famous jump scares in cinema still works!!...LOL!. BTW, this close up was shot in a swimming pool with milk added to the water to give it a murky look. The mechanical shark was nicknamed 'Bruce' after Spielberg's lawyer & was notorious for breaking down during production.
@@ShreeNation I saw it with my parents back in 1975. When the cinema jumped, popcorn became airborne...LOL!. This movie made a generation scared of the ocean for years!. Other interesting facts are that the shark was built & operated by the FX guru who did the giant squid for Walt Disney's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Spielberg managed to get him out of retirement. And to make the shark look bigger when Hooper dives in the cage, they used a short actor with scaled-down scuba gear. If you want to learn about this movie, I'd suggest hunting down a copy of 'The Jaws Log' which I think is by Carl Gottleib. it's a fascinating account of the trials of making a cinema classic. This movie made Spielberg globally famous and was the first 'blockbuster' movie since cinemas were full & people lined up around the block - literally -to get in to see it. If you liked Jaws, Spielberg's TV movie 'Duel' is worth a look. It's maybe the ultimate road rage film and sometimes gets called 'jaws' on dry land, replacing the predator shark with a huge truck.

@@ShreeNation If you image google it, you can find a old picture of Spielberg casually relaxing inside the jaws of "Bruce" between filming. And it might also be in that book as well.
One of the greatest movies ever made a true masterpiece Jaws directed by Steven Spielberg based on the novel of the same name by Peter Benchley starring Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw, Richard Dreyfuss and the iconic music score by John Williams. Other movies can have better-looking shark props or CGI sharks but story-wise, Jaws will always hold up. It's also interesting how the novel and the movie differ but still retain key moments. Even the characters are different. Martin Brody was an islander in the novel but a former NY cop in the movie. Ellen Brody was a socialite but fell in love with Martin although she longs for her old life and it's not the case in the movie. And Matt Hooper was the younger brother of someone Ellen once dated which leads to a one time tryst as she tries to recapture that former excitement. In the movie, he was adorable. What was nice was the mayor in the novel was given a real good reason why he needed the beaches to be open. What's interesting is Hooper was supposed to receive his novel death until their Australian unit captured a real Great White getting tangled in the miniature shark cage's rope to the surface. With that footage, they decided to let Hooper live. What had to also hurt is screenwriter Carl Gottlieb had to pare his own character Harry Meadows (the newspaper man) to the bone. Meadows was a way larger character in the novel and a friend of Martin Brody. Still, to make the movie a more streamlined vehicle, he made the sacrifice.
As we go along: 1. Chrissy's body parts are washed too far up the beach for there not being a storm. 2. Boy Scouts don't have to swim a mile to get their badge. It's an accomplishment all on it's own (former scout). 3. Lee Fierro/Mrs. Kintner actually slapped Roy Scheider. It took 17 takes. Once she hit him so hard his glasses fell off. 4. The jump scare at Ben Gardner's boat was put in by Spielberg because they were having problems with the shark (Bruce) and he wanted something earlier in the film. It works every time. 5. IRL Dreyphuss and Shaw didn't get along so they had to be kept apart. Spielberg used it to punctuate their animosity. 6. Hooper was right. It wasn't the shark. 7. "You're gonna need a bigger boat" is one of the greatest ad libs ever. Roy hadn't seen Bruce yet and was shocked to see how big it was. 8, Goof. No animal that large could bang the side of the boat as rapidly as it did. 9. My thoughts on Qiunt's erratic behavior after the USS Indianapolis had brought back some kind of PTSD. 10. I was in the US Navy and we were taught to go after the shark's eyes. 11. In the book not only does Hooper die in the shark cage he's also having an affair with Mrs. Brody. 12. JAWS II is good. It revolves around the Brody kids and their friends. (including the Mayor's child) Any other movie after II in what remains of the chain of Jaws movies aren't worth your time or ours.
47:05. To answer your question, the engine exploded. It was already in rough shape when the shark hit the boat before and Quint pushed the engine too hard while trying to lure the shark into the shallows. Hooper was trying to tell him that was going to happen but Quint refused to listen.
I think, and I am by no means a diesel mechanic, that the main bearings seized up due to lack of proper lubrication and locked the crank shaft and the ensuing engine compression blew the head right off the engine block. But that's just a guess.

One of the very first movies i can remember (And it is one of the (not so rare cases, if you study it intensively) where the movie is actually "better/entertaining" than the book. Peter Benchley (He was the Reporter at the beach), who also wrote the book, suffered until his death from being responsbable "helping" demonizing sharks so much and was committed to their protection a few years later when this movie was released. ... A movie what makes me love sharks for life (no hate) the quality of acting is no more. Also.. never forget the real monster in this story. Mayor Vaughn (got in conflict with the New York Mafia in the noval by the way, that's way he was so reckless and ignoring the problem) ... I swim with sharks many times during dives and these are are super intelligent and actually pretty shy animals, they don't know how dangerous they can be to humans, but the ocean is not ment for us. We are not made for water. Also these were one of the first real shots of great whites in the cage scences.

sharks are ambush predators ,they attack from below thats why you dont see them until its too late. when you see the fins on the surface near you ,they are curious to see if you are food for them .same as when they purposefully bump into you underwater they wanna know if your on the menu.almost every shark attack is a case of mistaken identity ,when swimming or surfing we resemble seals ,thier main diet. but tiger sharks are a bit more aggresive and territorial .
This kept almost an entire generation out of the ocean for years and some of us STILL won't go in the ocean. The limited appearance of the shark was a happy accident. The mechanical shark wouldn't work properly so they had to work around the problem and turned this into a more suspenseful movie.
Hi, This has become an exaggerated myth Im afraid. They only planned to show more of the shark during the second half of the film. The shark was purposely kept hidden during the first half. Bruce, the mechanical shark, was never scheduled to be used until July 1974. They filmed the beach scenes in May and June, without intending to use Bruce. Not that Bruce could ever have been used in the 4ft shallow water off State Beach anyway hehe. Cheers.
At the time of JAWS release of 1975 sharks depicted in movies and t.v.were these dolphin sized fish so it came as a surprise for a lot of people that real Great Whites can grow close to the 25' length of the shark in the movie.
The birth of the summer blockbusters. This was fairly early in the career of Steven Spielberg. I love how they develop the characters. Robert Shaw (Ahab) 😄 was a great actor from Lancashire England. He died in 1978 at the age of 51 from a heart attack on the way home with his wife. Would love to see the original Taking of Pelham 123 from 1974 with Robert Shaw, Walter Matthau, Hector Elizondo and Martin Balsam. A Thriller drama good enough to be remade with Denzel Washington and John Travolta. Thanks!

The one thing I really admire, these were all practical effects! NO CGI. In movies of that generation there had to be more character development to give the people something to chomp on rather than just dazzling people with special effects. I may be wrong but I think I read somewhere that the shark is only visible for less than 6 minutes, the rest of the terror, tension and anxiety is brought on by wonderful cinematography, a brilliant soundtrack and wonderful props......I wish more films were like this today...Great reaction! P.S. I seen this movie with my parents at the Solano Drive-in Theater with my parents when it came out, it was playing on both screens and there were so many to see the movie they actually had the police directing traffic, what wonderful memory that at the time was horrifying (LOL).

Morbid fact is Jaws was based on the 1916 New Jersey Shark Attacks and they actually did refuse to close the beaches due to tourism. 5 attacks 4 deaths.

The rarely seen shark was not intentional; it was due to endless mechanical failures of the three sharks they had built. They fell way behind schedule and over budget, so they improvised with partial shots and with footage of real sharks. It worked in their favor.

There is no Movie that compares to Jaws!!! My Dad banned me from seeing it. So one night when he was out with his friends my Mom she told my brother to take me to see it. It Terrified me to Death!!! I was 10.
"Were there video games in the 70s?" Uh, there were. KIND of. But being the 70s, they were still VERY, very, very much still in their infancy. And this was '75? Yeah. The only options for playing video games at home at the time were the Magnavox Odyssey, and... Pong. Riveting.
"You know what makes me so afraid of sharks?" No, but I do know what *should* bother you. In one fell swoop, you lose your life and place on the food chain. Best. Leo.
You're young, so you can be forgiven for having no concept of what things were like in the 70s, when the book and movie for this came out. Summer towns were literally little beach towns which ONLY got tourists over the summer months. The businesses on the island had to make enough money to live the rest of the year during the summer months so in their case, yes 24 hours was like 3 weeks of income for the year for them. Also, back then, the general public knew very little about sharks. It wasn't until after this film became the first summer blockbuster, that a huge interest in sharks developed for the average person. Some of the science in the movie was what was believed true back then (like rogue sharks, territoriality, etc), and has been since proven false. They didn't have the tech we have now, or it wasn't available to the general public (or was prohibitively expensive). No one reacted to the shark attack on Chrissy Watkins, because no one knew about it. Before it could go to the tiny town newspaper, it was re-categorized as a boating accident (the newspaper head was on the little ferry with the mayor and medical examiner telling Brody he had no authority to close the beaches. The novel explains a bit deeper why Mayor Vaughn was so hell bent on keeping the beaches open (he was in debt to the NY mob who had been scooping up properties in Amity, and needed them to be rented all summer to get him out of debt).
Gosh! There are so many films I’d recommend! So many classic films. I’m a huge film fan and have been all my life. There is no “right” way to enjoy movies. Do you like scary movies, fantasy films, adventure? JAWS is pretty near a perfect film.

A couple of things.. The lady in the 1st scene that got eaten by the shark while the guy was passed out on the beach beech, her screams of pain, when she said "it hurts", were real. The machine that grabbed her under the water actually broke her rib.those were real screams of pain. Secondly the mechanical shark which was named 'Bruce' didn't work very well, so Spielberg decided to not have it in the picture (Which actually helped the film with suspense) and continue filming and only used it in a few scenes when it actually was working. I highly recommend "Behind the Scenes of Jaws".

@@ShreeNation A few more FYIs: The hand on the beach the morning after the first shark victim (Christine Watkins) with the carbs crawling all over it, was actually the hand of a female production crew member who volunteered because the prosthetic hand did not look realistic enough. So yeah, that is a real hand. The scene where Hooper finds the head in the hull of the boat, was shot in the film editor Verna Fields' parents swimming pool and milk was added to give the scene a murky look. I'll have some film suggestions of the Comedy and Horror genre soon. Stay safe and be well.
That piece about breaking her ribs is a myth. She has even stated such in videos. It did not injure her. It was uncomfortable, but there were no real injuries. Also the sounds that you hear, were not the original sounds filmed when she was in the water. They did the sounds separate with her sitting upside down on a chair and then dumping water over her head. So her saying it hurts was when she was in the chair not when she was originally in the water. You're welcome
J Booker Thats not true Im afraid. This was something a sound man (who wasn't even there) claimed in a 1997 documentary. The actress herself, Susan Backlinie, denies she broke anything. Nor was she hurt. The screams were actually re-recorded months later in a studio. There was no machine used to pull her either. Originally it was going to be done on an electric winch but Susan herself said she asked it to be just man power instead. That scene was filmed deliberately without showing the shark. Spielberg intentionally kept the shark hidden during the first half of the film.

It's easy to dismiss the "dollars" when viewers don't understand that small summer towns rely on those dollars for their economic survival. It's the summer tourism that helps them make their living for the year. And the 4th of July weekend is a huge income generator for the people of this town, and they count on that money to make their living.
True story info regarding this movie in the beginning when the girl was attacked n tossed around she was actually pulled back n forth from 2 sides with ropes via directors saying n have her a safe word in case she was in trouble/drowning n they'd stop.

Tiger Sharks are one of the top 5 most dangerous Sharks in terms of attacks on humans, the others are Bull, Great White, Oceanic White tip and Sand Tiger.
Great observation on having fully fleshed out characters whose situations are felt more by the audience. It's the reason I was routing for the shark in Jaws 2; I felt no empathy for the scantily defined teen characters. Also, the shark went the Phantom of the Opera route.
@@ShreeNation Oh please don't, the great rip off movies Grizzly (1976), and Alligator (1980), are way way better. Jaws 2 basically just becomes a slasher in the water. Jaws 3, a cash grab and it was once in 3D to really grab the money. However, Jaws: The Revenge is so so bad it's good in a way as not the way to make a shark movie. Also has Michael Cain who always wanted to go to the Bahamas and got to for free as well get a good paycheck. Then, if you watch Jaws: The Revenge or even don't, try to find the video on YT called Siskel And Ebert: Jaws: The Revenge. Just in case you don't know who Siskel and Ebert are, they became famous critics on TV during the day that you would place them as the innovators of the YT critics and reactors as youself. I literally watched this movie a few years ago at a restaurant on the beach in Florida. They had to blow up screens and we were in the water at night time watching jaws. Also the guy at the beginning wasn't smart by not going in the water, he was drunk as fuck and passed out. Had he not been white girl wasted he would have gone out there with her for sure. So it was more of a luck thing than a brains thing. 10k in 1975 was like 50ish thousand in comparison. So while it doesn't sound like a lot, and really in the grand scheme of things 50,000 isn't outrageous either but it's a lot especially for a small town that makes almost all of its money in a couple months. Boat is 42 feet. Shark is 25.
Steven Spielberg didn't show the shark that much is because the animatronic shark didn't work properly all the time so Spielberg the genius made it work by not showing it that much which made the movie more horrifying!
While I understand your fear of sharks, realistically it's like being scared of meteorites or vending machines. Between 1958 and 2016 there were a total of 2,785 confirmed unprovoked shark attacks around the world, 439 of which were fatal. That works out to 4.3 people killed by sharks every year, globally. To put this in perspective, in the US, which has 4% of the global population, over the same time period, there have been 43 deaths every year from being struck by lightning.

So with that in mind - and everything else about this movie - PLEASE see Spielberg's NEXT movie his most dazzling, awe-inspiring film, "CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND". It's got the realism of Jaws....but applied to a story about UFO sightings. The two movies were gigantic, iconic hits. Ideally, you would have seen Close Encounters and THEN Raiders Of The Lost Ark so you could have seen how Spielberg built his career, but he says himself that of all of his movies that he'd save, "Close Encounters" is the one. (the music in that one is just as incredible, and the visuals are SPECTACULAR). I really enjoyed this reaction video and your style! I really hope you keep hitting the classics from this era.....or ANY era of the movies! I'd love to see you do a classic like "Singin' In The Rain", or "Paper Moon", or "Sophie's Choice". Horror movies I'd love to see you watch Poltergeist, Carrie, Rosemary's Baby, The Shining, Creepshow. Anyhow, I really enjoyed this, I'm subscribing!

Your review gave me a chuckle. You went into these philosophical tropes of horror with not showing the shark. The reality is that Bruce, the shark, simply would not work correctly. It kept sinking to the bottom. They were over time and over budget. Spielberg had no choice but to do it that way.

If Ben’s head hadn’t jump scared him causing him to drop the tooth the tooth could have been used as proof, but the boat being towed in would have run water constantly through the bite mark, and the tooth would have been lost anyway. But that’s why he did it. And when he gets into the cage he’s doing it to attempt to poison the shark with the stick thing he drops.

The USS Indianapolis monologue is probably the best five minutes in cinematic history. The picture that Robert Shaw paints with words is better than any special effects could deliver
The second Quint saw the shark, it stopped being about money for him. It was about evening a score, and avenging the deaths of his friends, and THAT he would have done for free.
Robert Shaw's USS Indianapolis monologue is my favorite part of the movie. He did the version in the movie in one take. Just perfect! I read that he did a different take the day before but was so drunk. The scariest part...the USS Indianapolis event really happened. Almost 2000 crewmembers and about 300 went down with the boat with the rest of the 890 in the water. The Navy didn't even find out and send reinforcements for four days. Just over 300 survived. In 2017, the ship was found 18,000 feet down in the Philippine Sea. So tragic!
The boat being called Orca (Killer Whale) is genius. Orca's are pretty much Great White's only adversary. Orca's hunt Great Whites in packs...Hence why the boat is called Orca...its for hunting sharks.
Dolphins are also pretty good at taking out Sharks, but any boat named Dolphin, Porpoise, or Flipper wouldn't sound very intimidating

Those that have seen the movie before: "Yeah, about that...."
Your observation that a shark is especially scary because you often can't see it coming really bears on the shooting of this movie. For months and for multiple reasons, the crew couldn't get the mechanical shark (Bruce) to work, pushing the shooting schedule way back. To save valuable time, Spielberg decided to shoot the early scenes entirely without Bruce. So roughly the first half of the film has no visible shark at all. Purely by this accident, many people (including myself) think the first half of the movie is far scarier than the second. Spielberg's genius shows itself best in those earlier scenes, when he calls on our imaginations, rather than our eyes.
I have lived in Hawaii my entire life. When I saw 'Jaws' when I was little, it ALMOST scared me enough to not swim in the ocean. But here, the shark is sacred and we're taught to respect the Aina (land) and Kai/Wai (water), so once I realized it was just a movie, I was okay. It is a great/iconic movie nonetheless and is studied by film students all around the world. Spielberg is a genius.

We went to Jaws in 1975. In 1976 we went to Nantucket Island and we got our bikes and went to a beach and swam. It was so fun. Wonderful Trip.

When Quint blew out the engine, a hole was blown in the boat and it started to sink. It was taking on water and started to go down. The position of the stern was lower in the water, making it possible for the shark to come out of the water and fall onto the deck by breaking the transom.

3:03 I think they added this particular shot (with the guy tumbling down the hill) just to illustrate exactly _how_ drunk this guy was. I mean, later, he passes out on the beach, but _that_ could've been chocked up to him having been _awake_ all night. They wanted to _emphasize,_ this guy passed out because he was _drunk._
I saw some parts of Jaws when I was young. I definitely stayed in my head for many years but it also spurred in me to learn about Sharks. #1 We aren't on the menu and when it happens it's a mistake. But, even with a bite we are so fragile the damage is done. #2 They are often closer than we think and they leave us alonre Juvenile sharks and some species hunt in the shallows. A man in California took many drone shots of the coast during the Pandemic and it was amazing how many juvenile Whites are near the coast, swim by paddle boarders never paying them any mind. #3 I am happy to cede 75% of the Earth's surface them for I am as awkward in their as they would be in mine. Most species aren't aggressive to us and are actually quite fascinating, like Mako Sharks. Being able swim at 60 MPH in burst takes an incredible amount of strength given water is 830 times more dense than air and the fastest human 30mph in a burst. And, killing them so old men can use folk medicine to try and get a boner is not a cool.
Jaws was the first “blockbuster”. It’s a classic. Soundtrack was great, story great, acting great. I love the first scene, you don’t see the shark or any blood but you know what was happening to her. The USS Indianapolis story is true. Scary. Good reaction
Spielberg's Jaws would remain the top "blockbuster" film for two years until George Lucas came out with the original Star Wars in May 1977.
Another interesting fact: the T-Rex roar sound when the shark's body floated down at the end was the same sound effect used when the Peterbult truck from Spielberg's first film "Duel" went over the cliff at the end.
The second best "Jaws" type movie INO is Lake Placid. Salt Water Crocodile in New York. There was also and interesting lower budget one from the 70s called Orca, where a killer whale hunts a fisherman who killed its mate.

Fun Fact: Ben Gardner was victim #4 in the novel of Jaws. But the way his head came out of the hill was done by Spielberg himself. After the film had finished wrapping, Spielberg shot the scene of Ben’s boat out on the water. He did it to illicit an additional scream from the audience. Because of Ben’s head popping out of the hull, screams could be heard in each movie theater wherever Jaws was being played.
In the novel, the only sign of Ben Gardner was blood on the hull. He had a wife but I can’t remember if he had children. But it was quickly irrelevant because the film and novel quickly moved on from Ben.

@@ShreeNation I saw it with my parents back in 1975. When the cinema jumped, popcorn became airborne...LOL!. This movie made a generation scared of the ocean for years!. Other interesting facts are that the shark was built & operated by the FX guru who did the giant squid for Walt Disney's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Spielberg managed to get him out of retirement. And to make the shark look bigger when Hooper dives in the cage, they used a short actor with scaled-down scuba gear. If you want to learn about this movie, I'd suggest hunting down a copy of 'The Jaws Log' which I think is by Carl Gottleib. it's a fascinating account of the trials of making a cinema classic. This movie made Spielberg globally famous and was the first 'blockbuster' movie since cinemas were full & people lined up around the block - literally -to get in to see it. If you liked Jaws, Spielberg's TV movie 'Duel' is worth a look. It's maybe the ultimate road rage film and sometimes gets called 'jaws' on dry land, replacing the predator shark with a huge truck.

Other movies can have better-looking shark props or CGI sharks but story-wise, Jaws will always hold up. It's also interesting how the novel and the movie differ but still retain key moments. Even the characters are different. Martin Brody was an islander in the novel but a former NY cop in the movie. Ellen Brody was a socialite but fell in love with Martin although she longs for her old life and it's not the case in the movie. And Matt Hooper was the younger brother of someone Ellen once dated which leads to a one time tryst as she tries to recapture that former excitement. In the movie, he was adorable. What was nice was the mayor in the novel was given a real good reason why he needed the beaches to be open.
What's interesting is Hooper was supposed to receive his novel death until their Australian unit captured a real Great White getting tangled in the miniature shark cage's rope to the surface. With that footage, they decided to let Hooper live.
What had to also hurt is screenwriter Carl Gottlieb had to pare his own character Harry Meadows (the newspaper man) to the bone. Meadows was a way larger character in the novel and a friend of Martin Brody. Still, to make the movie a more streamlined vehicle, he made the sacrifice.
As we go along:
1. Chrissy's body parts are washed too far up the beach for there not being a storm.
2. Boy Scouts don't have to swim a mile to get their badge. It's an accomplishment all on it's own (former scout).
3. Lee Fierro/Mrs. Kintner actually slapped Roy Scheider. It took 17 takes. Once she hit him so hard his glasses fell off.
4. The jump scare at Ben Gardner's boat was put in by Spielberg because they were having problems with the shark (Bruce)
and he wanted something earlier in the film. It works every time.
5. IRL Dreyphuss and Shaw didn't get along so they had to be kept apart. Spielberg used it to punctuate their animosity.
6. Hooper was right. It wasn't the shark.
7. "You're gonna need a bigger boat" is one of the greatest ad libs ever. Roy hadn't seen Bruce yet and was shocked to see how big it was.
8, Goof. No animal that large could bang the side of the boat as rapidly as it did.
9. My thoughts on Qiunt's erratic behavior after the USS Indianapolis had brought back some kind of PTSD.
10. I was in the US Navy and we were taught to go after the shark's eyes.
11. In the book not only does Hooper die in the shark cage he's also having an affair with Mrs. Brody.
12. JAWS II is good. It revolves around the Brody kids and their friends. (including the Mayor's child)
Any other movie after II in what remains of the chain of Jaws movies aren't worth your time or ours.

47:05. To answer your question, the engine exploded. It was already in rough shape when the shark hit the boat before and Quint pushed the engine too hard while trying to lure the shark into the shallows. Hooper was trying to tell him that was going to happen but Quint refused to listen.

One of the very first movies i can remember (And it is one of the (not so rare cases, if you study it intensively) where the movie is actually "better/entertaining" than the book.
Peter Benchley (He was the Reporter at the beach), who also wrote the book, suffered until his death from being responsbable "helping" demonizing sharks so much and was committed to their protection a few years later when this movie was released.
... A movie what makes me love sharks for life (no hate) the quality of acting is no more. Also.. never forget the real monster in this story. Mayor Vaughn (got in conflict with the New York Mafia in the noval by the way, that's way he was so reckless and ignoring the problem) ...
I swim with sharks many times during dives and these are are super intelligent and actually pretty shy animals, they don't know how dangerous they can be to humans, but the ocean is not ment for us. We are not made for water.
Also these were one of the first real shots of great whites in the cage scences.

sharks are ambush predators ,they attack from below thats why you dont see them until its too late. when you see the fins on the surface near you ,they are curious to see if you are food for them .same as when they purposefully bump into you underwater they wanna know if your on the menu.almost every shark attack is a case of mistaken identity ,when swimming or surfing we resemble seals ,thier main diet. but tiger sharks are a bit more aggresive and territorial .

The limited appearance of the shark was a happy accident. The mechanical shark wouldn't work properly so they had to work around the problem and turned this into a more suspenseful movie.

This has become an exaggerated myth Im afraid.
They only planned to show more of the shark during the second half of the film. The shark was purposely kept hidden during the first half.
Bruce, the mechanical shark, was never scheduled to be used until July 1974. They filmed the beach scenes in May and June, without intending to use Bruce. Not that Bruce could ever have been used in the 4ft shallow water off State Beach anyway hehe.

At the time of JAWS release of 1975 sharks depicted in movies and t.v.were these dolphin sized fish so it came as a surprise for a lot of people that real Great Whites can grow close to the 25' length of the shark in the movie.
I think Quint suffered from survivor's dilemma, giving him a latent death wish.

The birth of the summer blockbusters. This was fairly early in the career of Steven Spielberg. I love how they develop the characters. Robert Shaw (Ahab) 😄 was a great actor from Lancashire England. He died in 1978 at the age of 51 from a heart attack on the way home with his wife. Would love to see the original Taking of Pelham 123 from 1974 with Robert Shaw, Walter Matthau, Hector Elizondo and Martin Balsam. A Thriller drama good enough to be remade with Denzel Washington and John Travolta. Thanks!

The one thing I really admire, these were all practical effects! NO CGI. In movies of that generation there had to be more character development to give the people something to chomp on rather than just dazzling people with special effects. I may be wrong but I think I read somewhere that the shark is only visible for less than 6 minutes, the rest of the terror, tension and anxiety is brought on by wonderful cinematography, a brilliant soundtrack and wonderful props......I wish more films were like this today...Great reaction! P.S. I seen this movie with my parents at the Solano Drive-in Theater with my parents when it came out, it was playing on both screens and there were so many to see the movie they actually had the police directing traffic, what wonderful memory that at the time was horrifying (LOL).

Morbid fact is Jaws was based on the 1916 New Jersey Shark Attacks and they actually did refuse to close the beaches due to tourism. 5 attacks 4 deaths.

The rarely seen shark was not intentional; it was due to endless mechanical failures of the three sharks they had built. They fell way behind schedule and over budget, so they improvised with partial shots and with footage of real sharks. It worked in their favor.

Uh, there were. KIND of. But being the 70s, they were still VERY, very, very much still in their infancy. And this was '75? Yeah. The only options for playing video games at home at the time were the Magnavox Odyssey, and... Pong. Riveting.

You're young, so you can be forgiven for having no concept of what things were like in the 70s, when the book and movie for this came out. Summer towns were literally little beach towns which ONLY got tourists over the summer months. The businesses on the island had to make enough money to live the rest of the year during the summer months so in their case, yes 24 hours was like 3 weeks of income for the year for them. Also, back then, the general public knew very little about sharks. It wasn't until after this film became the first summer blockbuster, that a huge interest in sharks developed for the average person. Some of the science in the movie was what was believed true back then (like rogue sharks, territoriality, etc), and has been since proven false. They didn't have the tech we have now, or it wasn't available to the general public (or was prohibitively expensive). No one reacted to the shark attack on Chrissy Watkins, because no one knew about it. Before it could go to the tiny town newspaper, it was re-categorized as a boating accident (the newspaper head was on the little ferry with the mayor and medical examiner telling Brody he had no authority to close the beaches. The novel explains a bit deeper why Mayor Vaughn was so hell bent on keeping the beaches open (he was in debt to the NY mob who had been scooping up properties in Amity, and needed them to be rented all summer to get him out of debt).

Gosh! There are so many films I’d recommend! So many classic films. I’m a huge film fan and have been all my life. There is no “right” way to enjoy movies. Do you like scary movies, fantasy films, adventure? JAWS is pretty near a perfect film.

A couple of things.. The lady in the 1st scene that got eaten by the shark while the guy was passed out on the beach beech, her screams of pain, when she said "it hurts", were real. The machine that grabbed her under the water actually broke her rib.those were real screams of pain. Secondly the mechanical shark which was named 'Bruce' didn't work very well, so Spielberg decided to not have it in the picture (Which actually helped the film with suspense) and continue filming and only used it in a few scenes when it actually was working. I highly recommend "Behind the Scenes of Jaws".

@@ShreeNation A few more FYIs: The hand on the beach the morning after the first shark victim (Christine Watkins) with the carbs crawling all over it, was actually the hand of a female production crew member who volunteered because the prosthetic hand did not look realistic enough. So yeah, that is a real hand. The scene where Hooper finds the head in the hull of the boat, was shot in the film editor Verna Fields' parents swimming pool and milk was added to give the scene a murky look. I'll have some film suggestions of the Comedy and Horror genre soon. Stay safe and be well.
That piece about breaking her ribs is a myth. She has even stated such in videos. It did not injure her. It was uncomfortable, but there were no real injuries. Also the sounds that you hear, were not the original sounds filmed when she was in the water. They did the sounds separate with her sitting upside down on a chair and then dumping water over her head. So her saying it hurts was when she was in the chair not when she was originally in the water. You're welcome

Thats not true Im afraid. This was something a sound man (who wasn't even there) claimed in a 1997 documentary. The actress herself, Susan Backlinie, denies she broke anything. Nor was she hurt. The screams were actually re-recorded months later in a studio.
There was no machine used to pull her either. Originally it was going to be done on an electric winch but Susan herself said she asked it to be just man power instead.
That scene was filmed deliberately without showing the shark. Spielberg intentionally kept the shark hidden during the first half of the film.

I wish you had not talked through Quint's story about The SS Indianapolis. It was dramatic -- and a true story. The worst shark attack ever.
It's easy to dismiss the "dollars" when viewers don't understand that small summer towns rely on those dollars for their economic survival.
It's the summer tourism that helps them make their living for the year. And the 4th of July weekend is a huge income generator for the people of this town, and they count on that money to make their living.

Last year we went through this living in a tourist beach town, except instead of a shark it was a virus.
Tiger Sharks are one of the top 5 most dangerous Sharks in terms of attacks on humans, the others are Bull, Great White, Oceanic White tip and Sand Tiger.
Great observation on having fully fleshed out characters whose situations are felt more by the audience. It's the reason I was routing for the shark in Jaws 2; I felt no empathy for the scantily defined teen characters. Also, the shark went the Phantom of the Opera route.

@@ShreeNation Oh please don't, the great rip off movies Grizzly (1976), and Alligator (1980), are way way better. Jaws 2 basically just becomes a slasher in the water. Jaws 3, a cash grab and it was once in 3D to really grab the money. However, Jaws: The Revenge is so so bad it's good in a way as not the way to make a shark movie. Also has Michael Cain who always wanted to go to the Bahamas and got to for free as well get a good paycheck.
Then, if you watch Jaws: The Revenge or even don't, try to find the video on YT called Siskel And Ebert: Jaws: The Revenge. Just in case you don't know who Siskel and Ebert are, they became famous critics on TV during the day that you would place them as the innovators of the YT critics and reactors as youself. I literally watched this movie a few years ago at a restaurant on the beach in Florida. They had to blow up screens and we were in the water at night time watching jaws. Also the guy at the beginning wasn't smart by not going in the water, he was drunk as fuck and passed out. Had he not been white girl wasted he would have gone out there with her for sure. So it was more of a luck thing than a brains thing. 10k in 1975 was like 50ish thousand in comparison. So while it doesn't sound like a lot, and really in the grand scheme of things 50,000 isn't outrageous either but it's a lot especially for a small town that makes almost all of its money in a couple months.

Steven Spielberg didn't show the shark that much is because the animatronic shark didn't work properly all the time so Spielberg the genius made it work by not showing it that much which made the movie more horrifying!
While I understand your fear of sharks, realistically it's like being scared of meteorites or vending machines.
Between 1958 and 2016 there were a total of 2,785 confirmed unprovoked shark attacks around the world, 439 of which were fatal. That works out to 4.3 people killed by sharks every year, globally.
To put this in perspective, in the US, which has 4% of the global population, over the same time period, there have been 43 deaths every year from being struck by lightning.

So with that in mind - and everything else about this movie - PLEASE see Spielberg's NEXT movie his most dazzling, awe-inspiring film, "CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND". It's got the realism of Jaws....but applied to a story about UFO sightings. The two movies were gigantic, iconic hits. Ideally, you would have seen Close Encounters and THEN Raiders Of The Lost Ark so you could have seen how Spielberg built his career, but he says himself that of all of his movies that he'd save, "Close Encounters" is the one. (the music in that one is just as incredible, and the visuals are SPECTACULAR). I really enjoyed this reaction video and your style! I really hope you keep hitting the classics from this era.....or ANY era of the movies! I'd love to see you do a classic like "Singin' In The Rain", or "Paper Moon", or "Sophie's Choice". Horror movies I'd love to see you watch Poltergeist, Carrie, Rosemary's Baby, The Shining, Creepshow. Anyhow, I really enjoyed this, I'm subscribing!

Your review gave me a chuckle. You went into these philosophical tropes of horror with not showing the shark. The reality is that Bruce, the shark, simply would not work correctly. It kept sinking to the bottom. They were over time and over budget. Spielberg had no choice but to do it that way.

If Ben’s head hadn’t jump scared him causing him to drop the tooth the tooth could have been used as proof, but the boat being towed in would have run water constantly through the bite mark, and the tooth would have been lost anyway. But that’s why he did it. And when he gets into the cage he’s doing it to attempt to poison the shark with the stick thing he drops.
