  • In this video I go over how my Godox flash photography kit dropped 10 pounds by switching to more lightweight strobes and support equipment. My previous location lighting kit was : 3 Godox AD200's, 2 Bowens S2 brackets, 2 Cheetahstand C10's, 1 Cheetahstand C8, 3x H200R round heads, AK-R1 grids and gel holders, 1 fresnel head, 1 barebulb, 1 maggrip, 1 magsnoot, 1 magbeam and magmasks, rogue round gels.
    My new location lighting kit is
    1x AD300 Pro (xplor 300 Pro) : adorama.rfvk.net/JnRna
    AD-S85 Softbox : adorama.rfvk.net/V59jk
    2x AD100 Pro (xplor 100 Pro) : adorama.rfvk.net/bR4z9
    1 Westcott 10' Pro Stand : adorama.rfvk.net/AooAGo
    (lightest 10' wide footprint stand I could find from a reputable brand)
    1 Nissin LS-65C carbon fiber nano stand : amzn.to/3eKKuWF
    1 Phottix Padat 198 carbon fiber nano stand : amzn.to/38It74X
    AK-R1 accessories and gels
    Bag : Strobius 110 Standard strobiusshop.com/product/stro...
    Also : I did not switch away from the Cheetahstands because I don't like them. They are great. But, I don't need the utility of quickly moving the stand between tight locations anymore, as I'm working in more spacious environments (aka not weddings). I still think Cheetahstands are the best drop stand on the market and I will continue to use them if I am shooting a wedding.

I am very into minimalism and I am tired of my tt600s/aa batteries for my portraits, and they are a pain to setup/gel for my toy photography. I think I have a bit more research to do today. Glad you tried the Nissin stands. Been using them since they came out with the first 50c. I use the 65c at 8.85 ft and 1.8lbs, capacity 6.6lbs with my ad400 or ad300 with godox mount modifiers. Set my camera bag on the leg. And the legs splay out huge
    I looked at the Phottix carbon Padat at 1.3lbs at 6.5ft and 3.3lb capacity. Great stand but it was heavier then the Nissin 50c at 1.2lbs with 3.3lb capacity and 7ft height. The 50c has a adjustable leg but it needs a rubber washer as even cranked super tight it can shift. If you move to the new Nissin 55c at 6.5ft and 3.3lb capacity you get a adjustable leg to balance it on uneven ground also and it's 1.4lbs. And the adjustable leg doesn't need the addition of a rubber washer to keep it from collapsing.
    Intrested to see how the ad100 works out for you. I'm still on the fence. I like more power. So I'm using 2 ad300's right now and a ad400. Which ups my weight too. For the smaller power I use one of the V1's for a kicker.
    It's just insane the possibilities we have now with all the different flash offerings.
    One thing you might want to look at. Setting up a boom for one of the lights. I used a Rode Microphone carbon boom and mounted it on a Nissin 65c. I can go over the top for a hairlight now. Which is pretty cool and light weight since it's all carbon. When I do that I use a ad200 pro on the extension so only the head is over the top aiming down. And hang the Ad200pro from the other side for the counter balance.
    Changed this as I thought you were using the Phottix Passat Carbon 200. Which is a great flat folding stand too. But 2lbs. The flat folding is awesome. But with the 3 stands I wanted more height and I got it with less weight.
    And as always, I love the Strobius stuff. Their bags are awesome. The booms they have are worth a try too. I used them till I rigged up the carbon boom. I had tried to hook up a complete stand and modifier in one of their bags but it wouldn't fit. Now with the Godox mount I'm sure it will in multiple of their bags.

      Phottix had a nice flat folding carbon stand first. The 200c at 2 lbs. Then Nissin came out with the 50c at 1.2lbs with adjustable leg that always had problems slipping unless you put a rubber o ring in the tightening mechanism. Then Phottix came out with the lighter stand you have at 1.3lbs. Then China started selling a copy of the Nissin 50c. Then Nissin came out with the 55c and 65c. I absolutely love the 65c. Height at over 8 ft. Super wide base legs. And 1.8lbs. It's awesome.
      Only issue is none of these are anywhere near cheap. Lol

    I have near all those reflectors, you can buy a barn door kit with a gel holder that fits onto the reflector, that would eliminate the slight light spill on that dummies head plus it takes coloured tells. The dedicated background reflector with the gel clips, I have 2 of these made by Bowen’s, however I have a 3rd reflector made by a company called Interfit. That problem you had with the reflector not lining up correctly can be sorted out with the Interfit background reflector, because it can turn on the mount, plus it has a silver anodised finish on the inside as a posed to Matt white. The quality I is not a patch on the Bowen’s background reflector but it’s a 1/3 of the price, and address 2 of the minor faults you pointed out.

For this reason size/weight is a larger factor than brightness/performance as it stays in my bag more often that not. Current set up is an Ad 200 with an S2 bracket in a 34 inch bowens mount softbox. From what I have seen in your vids the small diameter of the S85 softbox when collapsed looks appealing. Do you know of any adapters that would allow the Ad 100 to be used with it?

How would you say the V1 would work with say a Magmod dome to function as my trigger and occasional "bounce flash" during a wedding dance, along with either a 100 or 200 for directional light? Should I get 2x200's, 2x100's or 2xV1's (or any combination to pair along with my 300)

I keep telling her to sell her overpriced Nikon flashes (she has 4) and get a couple AD200s or AD100s along with a couple of Godox on camera flashes. I have those too. Bought 3 of them to try for small kicker lights in the scene. They work well well. Only difference is no adjustable leg. And no options for a heavier or taller light from Bensfoto. The Nissin 65c goes to 8.5ft and can hold 6.6lbs - 3kg. I usually only put speedlights on the Bensfoto or Nissin 50c or 55c. Or a extension head on a ad200 with a modifier. For a ad400pro or a larger modifier and extension on the ad400pro I use the Nissin 65c's.
      Haven't used the ad100pro's yet. I'm still using the V1's for small light stuff. But I'm sure I'll end up with 1 or 2 ad100's sometime. Just tough for me. I usually use anything that small for a kicker light and I can mount one of the 3 V1's on it's foot stand with a gel very easily and point it somewhere. No stand needed.
      Now, I just want additional Godox mount modifiers. One larger would be great. And 2 strip box sizes.
      Toss in they all work with my 4 LED ML60's for night shoots and it works out great.

    Great video, super informative. Thank you. One question - don't you find the fact the the white balance of the AD100 Pro is different to the other Godox lights to be a problem? And why did Godox take the decision to make the AD10 Pro with a different white balance? For this reason, I prefer to use the Godox V1s rather than the AD100 Pros as my second lights when using the AD300 Pro as my main light.

    • @robhallphoto
      @robhallphoto  7 месяцев назад +1

      Well, it’s the tint that is different, not the white balance.
      Yes I did find it to be problematic once I applied the kit to headshots with a white background.
      That didn’t linger though, after noticing the problem I resolved it with gels, which I installed in between the lenses so I didn’t have to constantly attach it (I made a video on this).
      Why did Godox do it? Poor quality control. I’m assuming they tested the bulb, identified the tint, and tried to correct via tinting the lens. I assume they did all this on paper and proceeded with an order, and didn’t identify that it wasn’t accurate until after production models were shipping. (The funny thing is, as I describe in my video on the topic, had they just used the same lenses as the V1 they would have had no issues).
      Anyways they resolved it later in the production line.

Cheers

    • @robhallphoto
      @robhallphoto  3 года назад +1

      When I was all 200s, I was all H200Rs since those have been available, because they were so easy to gel and a nice quality that was close to barebulb but so much better than fresnel. But I would carry 1 barebulb and 1 fresnel head around in case I needed least specularity possible (barebulb) or functionality with magmod (fresnel). I never stored them in anything but a side pocket, nor did I protect the bulb. The bag I use does have dividers so I made a section just for the extra heads. I just set my bag down relatively gently and otherwise there’s no contact made with it.

      Number 2! Because the 100 Pro's are used as direct, undiffused light source (for fill, rim, hair, accent, and background lights), they are almost always at lower power outputs than the 300 Pro. Even outdoors, sometimes I have to crank the 300 to 1/1 but the 100 will be at 1/8 or less.

    Any suggestions on where else I can get the strobius bag? The link you posted says it’s sold out.
    And maybe you’ve already address this, but if you were using the round head for the ad 200s, is there a reason on not using the stand bracket that comes with the ad200 instead of the s2 bracket? I am currently use the s2 brackets because I often attach soft box for the ad200. But if you using a round head without a modifier, could you have used the bracket that comes with it and always have them attached to a stand just like your ad100s?
    One last question.... what is your suggestion on packing things for airline travel? Do you check your light bag? Would the strobius bag be safe enough as a checked luggage? Any suggestions?

    • @robhallphoto
      @robhallphoto  3 года назад +1

      I have never protected the AD200 bulbs in any way. They are divided in the side pouch so they don’t move much, and the pouches do not have significant padding.
      I’ve never been concerned because my bag doesn’t make any contact that is outside of my control. I set it down, I put it in the car, and that’s it.
      Also the stand attachment that came with the original ad200s (which 2/3 were) is horrible. The 1/4 20” connectors locking mechanism was just a bad idea. It was difficult to get the ad200 tight on it, and it was difficult to get fingers around the knob to fasten the connector to the stand attachment.
      I had to keep 1 S bracket to connect softboxes to the AD200 anyways, so I always carried a backup anyways, as it could also handle a large umbrella way better than even the AD200 Pros improved stand attachment.

    What's the length of your folded down keylight setup w/ flash? I have the 85cm strobius bag with several of the Nissin stands that I upgraded to after several back problems, and love it as a kit. But I've been using a 46" softlighter as my main key, your setup looks much faster.

      bottom of stand to top of 300 pro is 39" or 99cm. So it wouldn't sit inside the 85.

    • @robhallphoto

      Just the AK-R1 modifiers, mainly grids and gels, but I've also used the dome to diffuse / spread the light more too.

    Was looking for the Strobius 110 case online and looks like this is a Russian company with an English website that takes US orders (their RUclips channel is also in Russian). I sent an inquiry (in English) about restock and received no reply.
    Does anyone have any information or experience ordering from them here in the US? Or maybe has inquired or received an answer about when they might be getting restocks on some of their items?
    Are they still in business as far as we know?

    Been searching through your vids for any updates on gel attachments for the strobes. I see you have a ton for most of the Godox/Xplor lights but nothing for the AD600Pro specifically.
    There’s legitimately no resources on youtube for ad600pro attachments since the bulb and other attachments that fit the 200, 300, 400, 600BM no longer fit the pro version.
    Would love some stuff on that if you’re willing. Cheers.

      All my monolight gels (400 pro, 600 pro, 300 pro, 200 barebulb) are flashgels.com which are custom sized and cut for each bulb. And my fresnels heads and round head gels are all by Rogue.

    • @robhallphoto
      @robhallphoto  3 года назад

      And I’ve never put a C stand in a bag. Rarely do I take a c stand on location (it’s actually one of the worst things you can put a light on outdoors as it has such a narrow footprint), but if I do I just toss it in my car and carry it wherever it needs to go.

      @robhallphoto  10 месяцев назад

      My setup is largely the same, with 2 changes.
      1, my zipper on the Strobius bag used in this video blew out and it has never (and I’ve been told will never) had more stock. Since I didn’t really use the side compartments anymore I replaced it with a sandbagger Prism.
      2) I tend to have either a 42” Parasnap or 65” umbrella in there as well, depending on my shoot, but the AD-S85 is still my primary softbox.

    Is it safe to keep the light attached to the light stand in the bag?!? I always keep the lights in a separate bag

    • @robhallphoto
      @robhallphoto  2 года назад

      If you're rough with your bag they may suffer cosmetic issues if things are bumping into each other, but otherwise there's really no concern. I intentionally have light stands of 3 different collapsed heights so the lights are all at different levels in the bag.

    That is a substantial size and weight saving on your location kit. Don't you miss the addl power of the ad200?

    • @robhallphoto
      @robhallphoto  3 года назад +3

      Not at all. The 100 pro is more powerful than the ad200 with h200r because it’s a fresnel head instead of a barebulb behind diffusion. And I was primarily using the 200’s as accent lights (rim, hair light, background, kicker) ever since I got the 300 pro + ad-s85. The only time where I used the 200 as a soft key light on location was when my 300 pro’s battery died from being in a cold car for 2 nights.
      As accent lights, my 300 pro is always the light at the highest power. By using the 100 pros as direct light, and using the zoom function rather than grids to tighten the beam, they are always at pretty low power outputs.

    I wonder if the hassle of schlepping and setting lights up might be as big a deterrent to a lot of people using OCF as not knowing how to use OCF. This sort of thing goes a long way to addressing that.

    • @robhallphoto
      @robhallphoto  3 года назад +2

      For sure Ross.
      I've talked to so many people who have bought into some flash gear and then never used it because they were instantly overwhelmed or turned off by :
      a) the added weight of transport
      b) the time it takes to get out of the bag and have it ready to shoot
      c) complexities of mounting equipment or connection equipment.
      C has been partially resolved by many brands with internal receivers that get rid of the cables, external receivers, and additional batteries. But I think a kit like this goes a long way in reducing the stress of a and b, such that its way easier to implement flash photography into your work.
